The Price of Silver has been boucing around over the last few months. The general trend has been downwards from the brief highs of April 2011. The Perth Mint’s decision to dramatically increase issue prices in May, rather than wait to see how silver performed for a few months, was met with disbelief in our office. The Perth Mint has now decided to decrease prices in line with the current price of silver. So you will see some recent issues actually priced at less than last month. We apologise for the confusion this has caused.

1915 Sinking of the Lusitania Replica Medal RMS Lusitania entered service with the Cunard Line on 26 August 1907. Lusitania was constructed as part of the competition between the Cunard Line and other shipping lines, principally from Germany, for the transAtlantic passenger trade. Whichever company had the fastest and most luxurious ships had a commercial advantage: However, the outbreak of World War I changed everything. On 4 February 1915 Germany declared the seas around the British Isles a war zone: from 18 February allied ships in the area would be sunk without warning. On 17 April 1915 Lusitania left Liverpool on her 201st transatlantic voyage, arriving in New York on 24 April. A group of German-Americans, hoping to avoid controversy if Lusitania were attacked by a U-boat, discussed their concerns with a representative of the German embassy. The embassy decided to warn passengers before her next crossing not

6

to sail aboard Lusitania. The Imperial German embassy placed a warning advertisement in 50 American newspapers, including those in New York. Lusitania departed New York for the home leg on 1 May. By 6 May she was less than 20 kilometres from Ireland when she was sighted and targeted by the German U-boat U-20. The torpedo hit the starboard side just behind the bridge. Two explosions occured and the Lusitania immediately listed to starboard and the bow submerged. She sank in 18 minutes taking

1,198 of the 1,959 people on board to their graves. In August 1915, Munich medalist and sculptor Karl X. Goetz privately struck a small run of medals as a limited-circulation satirical attack on the Cunard Line for trying to continue business as usual during wartime. Goetz blamed both the British government and the Cunard Line for allowing the Lusitania to sail despite the German embassy's warnings. One side of the medal showed the Lusitania sinking laden with guns (incorrectly depicted sinking stern first) with the motto "KEINE BANNWARE!" ("NO CONTRABAND!"), while the reverse showed a skeleton selling Cunard tickets with the motto "Geschäft Ăœber Alles" ("Business Above All"). Goetz had put an incorrect date for the sinking on the medal, an error he later blamed on a mistake in a newspaper story about the sinking: instead of 7 May, he had put "5. Mai", two days before the actual sinking. The British Foreign Office obtained a copy of the medal, photographed it, and sent copies to the United States where it was published in the New York Times on 5 May 1916. Many popular magazines ran photographs of the medal, and it was falsely claimed that it had been awarded to the crew of the U-boat. The Goetz medal attracted so much attention that Lord Newton, who was in charge of Propaganda at the Foreign Office in 1916, decided to exploit the antiGerman feelings aroused by it for propaganda purposes and asked department store entrepreneur Harry Gordon Selfridge to reproduce the medal. The replica medals were produced in an attractive case claiming to be an exact copy of the German medal, and were sold for a shilling apiece. On the cases it was stated that the medals had been distributed in Germany "to commemorate the sinking of the Lusitania" and they came with a propaganda leaflet which strongly denounced the Germans and used the medal's incorrect date to claim that the sinking of the Lusitania was premeditated. We offer true to the original modern replicas of the Lusitania medal. Each is accompanied by a copy of the propaganda leaflet.

2011 Australia’s Convict Past Gold Proof Collection In 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip brought 751 convicts and 252 marines and their families to proclaim a new British colony in New South Wales. Convicts transported to Australia provided skilled labour for the development of the new colony - many were able farmers, shepherds brickmakers, carpenters, nurses, servants and cattlemen. After serving their term, they often became free subjects. The fledgling New South Wales population was soon augmented with new settlements in Van Diemen’s Land, Norfolk Island, Rottnest Island, Moreton Bay and other destinations. These sites echo the profound impact of convict settlement in our national history. In 2010, the Australian Convict Sites was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The property is made up of 11 convict sites located across Australia. The list recognises places that are of “outstanding universal value” according to the World Heritage Convention. The Convict Past Heritage Sites Collection will consist of six 1/25th Ounce 99.99% Pure Gold Proof coins. Australia’s Rarest Circulating Coin Today, the 1855 Half Sovereign is considered Australia's Rarest Circulating coin. It is many times rarer than the 1930 Penny and being the first Australian Gold coin is considerably more important. Over the 21 years I have been in business I have only handled about 6 examples. This is one of the nicest as this coin is almost always seen extremely worn and often damaged. This is a really pleasing example with some detail in the hair.

The discovery of Gold in Australia in the 1850's created the need for more coinage. In 1855 the Sydney Mint was established as a branch of the Royal Mint and production of the first official Australian gold coins commenced. Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns were struck featuring an unique Australian design. Sovereigns were struck in large quantities as they were also a common international trade coin, but the smaller Half Sovereign was struck in very small numbers to facilitate local trade. In 1855, the first year of issue for the Sydney Mint, 502,000 Sovereigns were struck from the newly discovered gold. However, only 21,000 Half Sovereigns were struck. This was to be the lowest mintage of any circulating Half Sovereign. Then in 1857 the portrait design of Victoria was changed meaning this coin type was only issued for two years.

Such is the rarity of this coin that no example is known in Uncirculated condition. In EF condition the coin catalogues at $250,000.00. This coin is certainly not EF but it does grade gVG. In VG the coin catalogues at $28,000.00 and in Fine $65,000.00. This example is in between.

gVG $27,500.00

In 1966, to secretly distinguish coins from the London Mint, small adjustments were made to the coin designs. To the untrained eye the changes were difficult to detect, but to those who knew where to look they were quite obvious. In 1981, after a break of 15 years, this practice was also used on a small number of the Canadian-minted

Silver Coins of the Roman Republic The period from the overthrow of the Roman monarchy, c.509BC until the rise of Augustus in 27BC is known as the Roman Republic. The Roman Republic was governed by a complex constitution, which centered on the principles of a separation of powers and checks and balances. The evolution of the constitution was heavily influenced by the struggle between the aristocracy, or the patricians, and other talented Romans who were not from famous families, the plebeians. During the first two centuries, the Republic saw its territory expand from central Italy to the entire Mediterranean world. In the next century, Rome grew to dominate North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula, Greece, and what is now southern France. During the last two centuries of the Roman Republic, it grew to dominate the rest of modern France, as well as much

of the east. At this point, the republican political machinery was replaced with imperialism. The major coin of the Roman Republic was the silver Denarius. Initially the designs were decided by "the three men responsible for casting and striking bronze, silver and gold" or the tresviri monetales, also sometimes referred to as the mint magistrates. The trio was composed of young statesmen aspiring for political office. Production was carried out by moneyers, rather than a government mint. Early designs typically showed the goddess Roman with a chariot on the reverse. However, as time went on, the moneyers often chose to feature designs proclaiming the successes of their family, both political and military. Self-promoting imagery on coins was part of the increasing competition amongst the ruling class in the Roman Republic. This issue we offer original silver Denarii of the Roman Republic dating from 150-50BC. All are fully identified and described and grade Fine or better. They represent remarkable buying at our prices.

Hadrian in Egypt AD117-138 The Roman province of Egypt (Aegyptus) was established in 30 BC after Octavian (the future emperor Augustus) defeated his rival Mark Antony, deposed his lover Queen Cleopatra VII and annexed the Ptolemaic kingdom of Egypt to the Roman Empire. The province encompassed most of modern-day Egypt except for the Sinai Peninsula (which would later be conquered by Trajan). Aegyptus was bordered by the provinces of Creta et Cyrenaica to the West and Judaea (later Arabia Petraea) to the East. Egypt would come to serve as a major producer of grain for the empire. As a province, Aegyptus was ruled by a prefect instead of the traditional senatorial governor of other Roman provinces. The prefect was a man of equestrian rank and was appointed by the Emperor.

The emperor Hadrian twice visited Egyptus. On his second visit his entourage included a Bithynian Greek youth, Antinous, with whom Hadrian was close. In October 130, whilst sailing on the Nile, Antinous drowned for unknown reasons; accident, suicide, murder or religious sacrifice have all been postulated. The emperor was grief stricken. Hadrian ordered Antinous deified, and cities were named after the boy, medals struck with his effigy, and statues erected to him in all parts of the empire. Temples were built for his worship in Bithynia, Mantineia in Arcadia. The city of Antinopolis was founded on the ruins of Besa, where he died. Throughout his reign Hadrian struck an interesting series of coins at Alexandria in Egypt. We offer an interesting selection of these historic pieces.

Each is presented in a superb descriptive colour holder.

The Merino ram’s head design featured on the 2011 gold proof ‘C’ mintmark is the same that graced the Australian shilling from 1938 until 1963. The original design was modeled on a grand champion Merino from the annual Sydney Sheep show in 1932. This ram was considered to be unmatched in the position of its head and horns. Named Uardry 0.1 after its home station, it became known as the ‘Shilling Ram’ and represented Australia’s growing wool industry. The dignified Merino ram represents Australia’s reliance on primary industry through its economic history.

Australia: Grand Duchy of Avram 1985 and 2000 Coin Sets The Grand Duchy of Avram is a micronation founded in the early 1980s by Tasmanian John Charlton Rudge (who sources also alternately name John Avram and John Charlton His Grace the Most Noble the Duke of Avram), an anti-taxation campaigner and hermetic kabbalah adherent. He is generally known as the "Grand Duke of Avram". The most public early manifestation of the Duchy was a bank which initially operated from retail premises owned by Rudge in the town of George Town, and which issued its own banknotes and coinage. This enterprise was later relocated to Strahan, on Tasmania's west coast. Customers were required to exchange Australian currency for the Avram equivalents in order to transact business in Rudge's store. In an attempt to circumvent Australian banking statutes Rudge did not trade as a bank, but instead referred to the operation as a b_nk. The unlicensed nature of the Avram "b_nk" roused the ire

of the Australian government, who promptly confiscated Avram's entire currency reserves and initiated proceedings against him in the Australian Federal Court system. Eventually, after a total of six court cases, costing the federal government some AUD $22 million, the courts ruled that Rudge had not engaged in any illegal activity, and he was permitted to resume his banking practices unhindered. He has issued several sets of coins and banknotes in the name of the Royal Bank of Avram since the 1980s of which we offer the only two we have seen. The Royal Bank of Avram trades in US$ and these sets are somewhat more when purchased direct. Only around 250 of the 1985 Sets were issued.

Deadly and Dangerous Box Jellyfish Silver Proof Box Jellyfish are cnidarian invertebrates distinguished by their cube-shaped medusae. Found in Australia’s northern waters, they are best known amongst swimmers for their extremely potent venom which can stop cardiorespiratory functions in just a few minutes. This has made them responsible for more deaths in Australia than from sharks, snakes or saltwater crocodiles. This coin is the latest in the Deadly and Dangerous series. It is struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality. The reverse, featuring the use of pad printing, shows this deadly creature. Worldwide mintage is 5,000 coins. Australian Sealife Series Silver Proof Moray Eel Australian waters host some of the most famous reef systems in the world. From spectacular tropical corals to towering forests of kelp, these dynamic environments are teeming with aquatic life. The fifth and final coin from the first Sea Life series portrays a Moray Eel, which can be seen emerging from reef hideaways in tropical and temperate waters around Australia. Contrary to the impression given by its snake-like body, long sharp teeth and open-mouth, the Moray Eel is not an aggressive fish. Although capable of delivering a nasty bite if provoked, its mouth is generally open so that water can pass over its gills. Each coin is struck by The Perth Mint from 1/2oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality. Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coins’ reverse portrayals feature stunning applications of vivid colour. Mintage is 10,000 coins.
