A Handsome 1927 RiddleHeathershaw Gold Bearing £10

The handsome type two Gold Bearing Ten Pounds was introduced in 1925. The strong red and yellow colouring and reduced size made the note easier to identify and more practical to produce and circulate. The design incorporated a cameo of King George V on the front and utilized the wheat carting design from the type one issue. It was printed on heavily watermarked paper. The Riddle-Heathershaw £10 issue was released in 1927. As £10 represented a substantial sum of money only four prefixes were used U/1 to U/4. Today, this issue is scarce in any condition.

We offer a very handsome example of this key type note. It is crisp and original. It has not been cleaned and is free from pinholes, tears or repairs. McDonald catalogue value is VF $12,500.00, EF $30,000.00. A terrific opportunity for the advanced collector to obtain a premium example of a key predecimal note type.

Lovely Athenian Owl Tetradrachm 393-300BC One of the classics of the ancient world, the silver Tetradrachm from Athens was issued for centuries to finance wars and facilitate trade. The classic design shows a head of Athena on the obverse and the symbol of Athens - an owl - on the reverse. This example is well struck with all detail quite well centred. The coin is enhanced by some beautiful old toning.

• First coin in the new platinum bullion series • 99.95% pure platinum • Original 2011 platypus design • Australian legal tender • Limited mintage Platypuses are unique to Australia and live beside freshwater rivers and lakes, where they create burrows for shelter and protection. The platypus is mainly nocturnal and uses its webbed feet for swimming. This unusual creature swims with its eyes closed and must return to the water’s surface for oxygen. The average lifespan of the platypus is twelve years. The Perth Mint will release no more than 30,000 of these 1oz coins.

1937 Edward VIII Pattern Pair Upon the death of King George V in 1936 His son Edward was first in line for the British throne. Edward was madly in love with an American - Wallis Simpson. The problem was that Simpson was a divorcee (which meant she could not be Queen of England) and Edward was faced with a terrible decision - to marry the woman he loved or to be crowned King. Love prevailed and Edward abdicated. No coins were issued featuring Edward’s portrait but over the years a number of what-if Patterns have been issued. This Pair of Australian Sterling Silver Threepence and Sixpence were produced about twenty years ago. We have never offered them before.

Perth ANDA Coin Fair Narrows Bridge Silver $1 The Royal Australian Mint will issue four specially made coins for the 2011 ANDA Coin Fairs. The first coin in the series features the Narrows Bridge in Perth. Uniting Perth’s north and south, the Narrows Bridge was the largest precast, prestressed concrete bridge when built in 1959. Originally a six lane road bridge, it now carries twelve lanes and the Southern Suburbs railway line. Struck from 1 Ounce of 99.9% Pure Silver this special coin fair edition has a mintage of just 2,000 coins. It measures 40mm in diameter and features a Frosted Uncirculated finish

$75.00 The Rare 1880 Inverted A Gold Sovereign Such was the prestige in producing the Queen’s Gold coinage that very few errors exist. Over a decade ago we made a startling discovery - an 1880 Sydney Shield Reverse Gold Sovereign with the V of Victoria in the obverse legend being an inverted A. The coin had not been sighted previously and despite the millions of Sovereigns struck in Australia the error has not been discovered on any other issue. The error received much publicity and was written up in the February 1998 issues of Coin and Banknote magazine. It is now listed in McDonald (page 60 of the 2011 Edition). McDonald records around 10 known. The example we offer this month is a superior example. McDonald catalogue value is VF $8,500.00, EF $11,750.00.

Australia’s Last Predecimal Notes

Archive Notes from the Reserve Bank $3,950.00 Below Catalogue Value!

On 14 January 1966 Decimal Currency was introduced in Australia. The old Pounds, Shillings and Pence were replaced by the new Dollar and Cents. When printing of the Predecimal notes was completed small stocks of notes were placed into the Reserve Bank’s vaults for safekeeping. These notes were from the final production and all of these archival notes featured the very last serial prefix and serial numbers in the last 1000 printed! Over the years some were presented to VIP’s but most stayed locked away. This month we are delighted to offer Collections of these Rare and important notes. The Collection comprises:

Ten Shillings Final Prefix AH/69 Catalogues $2,200.00 One Pound Final Prefix HK/68 Catalogues $2,450.00 Five Pounds Final Prefix TD/10 Catalogues $2,750.00 Ten Pounds Final Prefix WA/62 Catalogues $3,500.00 What makes this Collection particularly special is that the final three numbers of the serials match - a feature that would be impossible to replicate outside these Archive Notes. With such a desirable feature you would expect to pay a premium for the matching numbers but for this month we offer this Set at an incredible $3,950.00 BELOW catalogue value.

The Complete 4 Note Set, in Uncirculated Condition $6,950.00

Decimal Training Note Set This Set of Notes was produced by Note Printing Australia to assist bank staff and others familiarizing themselves with the paper notes of the time. The five denominations from $5 to $100 are the same sizes, colours and feel as the Decimal Paper notes. What makes them particularly interesting is that they have been printed on banknote paper stock that had originally been obtained for the aborted 1946 Ten Shillings note! A great addition to any Australian note collection.

2011 Australia’s Convict Past Gold Proof Collection In 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip brought 751 convicts and 252 marines and their families to proclaim a new British colony in New South Wales. Convicts transported to Australia provided skilled labour for the development of the new colony - many were able farmers, shepherds brickmakers, carpenters, nurses, servants and cattlemen. After serving their term, they often became free subjects. The fledgling New South Wales population was soon augmented with new settlements in Van Diemen’s Land, Norfolk Island, Rottnest Island, Moreton Bay and other destinations. These sites echo the profound impact of convict settlement in our national history. In 2010, the Australian Convict Sites was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The property is made up of 11 convict sites located across Australia. The list recognises places that are of “outstanding universal value” according to the World Heritage Convention. The Convict Past Heritage Sites Collection will consist of six 1/25th Ounce 99.99% Pure Gold Proof coins. The designs will show Port Arthur, Hyde Park Barracks, Fremantle Prison, Cascades Female Factory, Coal Mines historic site and Old Government House. The first two coins, presented in the leatherette collection case, feature Port Arthur and the Hyde Park Barracks and are available now. Future issues will be released in May and September this year. Make sure you take advantage of our Coin-In service to ensure you receive all six coins in the series.

Port Arthur is the most well known property whereby it began as a penal settlement with numerous industrial activities such as ship building and flour milling later of course becoming a major tourist attraction. Accompanying the set is an Australia Post Souvenir Stamp Sheet, certificates and an information booklet on all eleven sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Only 3,000 of each

The Hyde Park Barracks was built in 1819. It as Australia’s first government built barracks and is today the only one remaining example from the Macquarie era. coin will be struck. The first release is now available at the Official Issue Price.

2011 Australia Remembers - War Historians 20 Cents The Australia Remembers series recognises those who made history beyond the battlefields. In 2011 it celebrates Australian war correspondents that have shaped our perception of conflicts since the Boer War. C.E.W. Bean, chronicler of Gallipoli and founder of the Australian War Memorial; and Damien Parer, whose memorable images from the Kokoda track preceded his death in the line of duty; exemplify an honourable occupation distinguished by bravery and integrity. Based on an image from the Australian War Memorial of an Australian official photographer, standing with tripod and camera on a British Mark V tank, the advance of Australian troops through the Hindenburg Line is recorded. The coin is presented in the same card format as the Australian Service Nurses and Lost Soldiers of Fromelles coins. There is a brief description of the work done by these brave Australians and the contribution they made to Australian war history on the card.

$6.95

2009 Australian Service Nurses 20 Cents Coin One in the Australia Remembers Series pays tribute to Australian Service Nurses. The 20 cent coin design perfectly captures a nurse in her personal effort to bring comfort and assistance to a wounded “Aussie Digger, whilst upholding the highest traditions of the nursing fraternity. Presented in an illustrated holder.

$16.95

2010 Lost Soldiers of Fromelles 20 Cents The second coin in the series commemorates the Lost Soldiers of Fromelles. Known as Australia’s bloodiest day, during the 1916 Battle of Fromelles the 5th Division suffered 5533 casualties. There was speculation for many years regarding the existence of an unmarked and forgotten mass grave near Fromelles, containing the remains of Allied soldiers killed during the battle and subsequently buried by the Germans. The 20 Cent coin design is based on the Cobbers Statue which stands in Fromelles. Presented in an illustrated holder.

Predecimal Proofs Don’t miss this opportunity to fill some gaps in your collection!

Melbourne Mint Sets

Superb 1955 Melbourne Proof Pennies

1955 was the first year that Melbourne Mint Proof coins were readily available to the general public. Even so the coins were not tremendously popular and a large proportion of the mintage of 1,200 was sold outside Australia. The USA, which had appreciated and purchased world proof releases for some time was the major market. We recently purchased a small holding of superb 1955 Melbourne Mint Pennies that had returned to Australia from the USA. The coins can be distinguished from the Perth issue by both the style of the Proof finish and the fact that there is no dot after the Y of Penny on the Melbourne issue. This issue is almost always found heavily toned so it is a real treat to be able to offer coins with virtually full golden mint lustre. The number of coins from the mintage of 1,200 that have survived this nice would not be great.

Constantine the Great Bronzes from the London Mint AD307-337 After Claudius’ invasion in AD43 the Romans sought to strengthen their position in Britain. In AD50 they commenced construction of a new settlement - Londinium. Spanning both sides of the Thames it was an ideal trading site allowing access to large vessels from the extremities of the empire. Trouble with the local tribes led by Queen Boudica saw London destroyed in AD60 and later rebuilt as a planned town. By AD122, when Hadrian visited, the Roman Empire and Londinium were at their height. A series of upheavels across the empire saw Londinium decline in the third century but early in the fourth

century it again sprang to prominence. From the reign of the first Christian emperor Constantine I (the Great) we offer original Roman coins struck at the London Mint between AD307 and 337. These coins all show Constantine on the obverse and have a distinguishing PLN (Pecunia Londinensis = money coined at Londinium) mintmark in the exergue of the reverse. A tremendous item of British history. Presented in a descriptive colour card. aVF or better.

Shipwreck 8 Reales from the Wreck of the Lady Burgess The Lady Burgess belonged to the English East India Company. In April 1806 she set out for India. She made it to the notoriously treacherous Cape Verde Islands where she found herself in shallow water and was forced onto the reef. She broke up on the rocks and 66 souls lost their lives. There was no indication in the Commerce Journal of the East India Company that the Lady Burgess was carrying bullion. Her cargo was listed as iron, lead and general merchandise. Consequently, no attempt was made to salvage her cargo. In the early 1990’s the Arqueonautas Company, one of the world’s foremost centres of maritime conservation, located the wreck and discovered iron bars, cannons, anchors and these 8 Reale coins. With certificate of authenticity.

$215.00 Counterstamped Coins from the West Indies Europeans began making their mark upon Tortola history after 1493, when Christopher Columbus spotted the British and US Virgin Islands. Though the Spanish made a few attempts to settle the area, famous pirates like Bluebeard and Captain Kidd were the first genuine inhabitants of the island. In the 17th century the British, who had successfully usurped control of the area from the Dutch, established a permanent plantation colony on Tortola and the surrounding islands. The sugar industry dominated Tortola history over the next 150 years, faltering only in the mid 1800s with the abolition of slavery. Like all British colonies in the 18th and 19th centuries the West Indies suffered from a severe lack of coinage. Spanish-American coins dominated and the decision was made to cut and counterstamp silver 8 Reales to provide small change and deter export of the revalued coins. The island of Tortola (or Tirtila) produced a number of issues, some of which may have provided the inspiration for Governor Macquarie’s Holey Dollar and Dumps of 1813. Both coins we offer are ex the William C Boyd Collection.

Ancient Persia c.1000BC Spearheads Settled in the fourth millennium BC Luristan lies in what is now Iraq. The area was more extensively settled in ancient times than it is now and a flourishing culture developed, despite the lack of a written language. Dating from the late bronze age, around 1000 BC, we offer original spearheads. These pieces measure 200mm in length and would originally have been attached to a wooden shaft. An amazing piece of ancient weaponry for little more than the cost of a new release coin.

Silver Coins of Sassanian Khusru II AD591-628 Khusru II Parvez (the Ever Victorious) was the 22nd Sassanid King of Persia. He was said to be haughty and cruel and had his father blinded, then murdered. His reign was marked by ongoing wars involving the Byzantine Empire. In A.D. 614, the army of Khusru II conquered Jerusalem. This conquest created a sensation, for Jerusalem was Christianity's most important city. It contained innumerable holy relics, including the true cross that, it is believed, Jesus Christ died upon. The church that housed the true cross was burned to the ground but the true cross was fortunately saved. Apparently the King wanted to present it to his favorite wife, Sira, who was a devout Christian! These Silver Drachms show a Bearded bust right of Khusru II wearing winged crowned with star and crescent between wings. The reverse depicts a fire altar, a symbol of the Zoroastrian religion, with an attendant either side leaning on long staffs.

Coins of Roman Egypt The Roman Province of Egypt was established in 30BC after Octavian defeated Mark Antony, deposed his lover Queen Cleopatra VII and annexed the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt to the Roman Empire. The province encompassed most of modern-day Egypt except for the Sinai Peninsula (which would later be conquered by Trajan). Egypt would come to serve as a major producer of grain for the empire. As a province, Aegyptus was ruled by a prefect instead of the traditional senatorial governor of other Roman provinces. The prefect was a man of equestrian rank and was appointed by the Emperor. From the reign of Nero onward, Aegyptus enjoyed an era of prosperity which lasted a century. Much trouble was caused by

religious conflicts between the Greeks and the Jews, particularly in Alexandria, which after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 became the world centre of Jewish religion and culture. Under Trajan a Jewish revolt occurred. Under Antoninus Pius, however, oppressive taxation led to a revolt in 139. Caracalla (211-217) granted Roman citizenship to all Egyptians, in common with the other provincials, but this was mainly to extort more taxes, which grew increasingly onerous as the needs of the emperors for more revenue grew more desperate. Diocletian's reign marked the transition from the Roman to the Byzantine era in Egypt

NSW Proclamation Coinage ur first coinage was a jumbled assortment of whatever currency could be scratched up in NSW. In 1800, Governor King, in a valiant attempt to correct the currency problem, issued a Proclamation valuing the many and varied foreign coins circulating in the colony. The Proclamation had two main aims - firstly to provide agreed values on foreign coinage that was trading at its intrinsic value and secondly, by inflating these values, ensure that it became impractical for traders to take coinage from NSW. These coins have become known as Proclamation Coins and form the basis of Australia’s first coinage.

Silver Civil War Shillings of Charles I 1625-1649 Charles I was King of England, King of Scotland and King of Ireland from 27 March 1625 until his execution. Charles famously engaged in a struggle for power with the Parliament of England. He was an advocate of the Divine Right of Kings, and many in England feared that he was attempting to gain absolute power. Many of his actions, particularly the levying of taxes without Parliament's consent, caused widespread opposition. His last years were marked by the English Civil War, in which he was opposed by the forces of Parliament. Charles was

defeated and subsequently captured, tried, convicted, and executed for high treason. The monarchy was then abolished and a republic called the Commonwealth of England was declared. Charles' son, Charles II, became King after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. The most popular coin of the era was the Silver Shilling. They were struck in large quantities to finance the war efforts and often their rushed production is reflected in the quality of the finished product. We are pleased to Charles I 1625-1649 offer original Charles I Silver Shillings from the English Civil War period. These coins show a portrait of King Charles on the obverse and the Coat of Arms of England on the reverse. Each coin is presented in a descriptive colour card.
