Camera in Motion Fleeting moments of the spectacular landscape along the World Heritage Rhaetian Albula/Bernina Railway have been photographed over the course of an entire year to form an extensive and breathtaking collection of photographs that blur the boundaries between abstract art and landscape photography. Artist Rolf Sachs applied his renowned conceptual approach to the spectacular train journey between Thusis in Switzerland and Tirano in Italy where he and local photographer Daniel Martinek began shooting in December 2012. The results of shooting from the moving train are a multi-faceted collection of captivating photographs in large scale format that demonstrate the changes of the seasons and lighting conditions in a distinctive combination of abstraction and reality. The images are as unexpected as they are diverse; greatly differing from the impressions the human eye would usually register when in motion. The Leica camera lends itself as an exceptional tool to capture the transient impressions of the landscape, the motion of trees rushing by, passengers at the stations, stones blurred, challenging the viewer to experience this famous journey in an unexpected and new light. London Sale of British & Irish Art Pandora will once again exert her divine magnetism when Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s magnificent oil painting of 1871 comes to auction. Pandora is arguably the most significant painting by Rossetti to be seen under the hammer in recent years and offers the public a rare sighting. Pandora was commissioned by John Graham for the considerable sum of 750 guineas. When he died in 1877, the painting was purchased by another keen collector of Rossetti’s work, Charles Butler, and remained in his family until the mid-20th century. After its purchase at auction in 1966 for £1,250, the painting was sold to a gallery in Newcastle which specialised in work by the then neglected Pre-Raphaelites. Treasures from Korea This exhibition represents the first comprehensive survey in the United States devoted to the art of the celebrated Joseon dynasty (1392–1910), an era that profoundly shaped the culture of Korea in ways that continue to resonate today. It contains more than 150 works, among them national treasures that have never left Korea before. The works range from screen paintings and calligraphy created for the courts to scenes that vividly and colourfully illustrate life across the social classes. Also displayed are ceremonial vessels, outstanding glazed ceramics, and works that reflect the dynamic encounters at the end of the 19th century between the ‘Hermit Kingdom’ and the Western world. The exhibition comprises works drawn primarily from the collection of the National Museum of Korea, supplemented by loans from public and private collections in Korea and the United States. Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Sale Featuring three works from the extensive private collection of Los Angeles philanthropists Jane and Marc Nathanson, the highlight of this sale is Ocean Park #20 by Richard Diebenkorn (above), one of the outstanding examples from the artist’s seminal series (estimated at $9 - $12 million). The second is Four Plates Edges Up by Richard Serra (estimated at $2.5 - $3.5 million) which is made up of three four-foot square pieces of steel balanced on their three-inch wide edges creating a solid wall that supports, through brilliant engineering and balance, a fourth similarly sized square. The third is Untitled, a monumental canvas by Sam Francis, dating from 1979 (estimated at $800,000 - $1.2 million). Like Jackson Pollock, Francis placed the canvases of works such as Untitled on the floor, often standing at the very centre and working his way, freely and openly, out to all four sides. The result is a ceaseless flow of loose, painterly colour with repeated crossing and re-crossing of tracks of pigment, which are then interrupted by small square windows of empty space. The 2014 Whitney Biennial will take a bold new form as three curators from outside the museum each oversee one floor. Donna De Salvo, chief curator and deputy director for programmes at the Whitney, noted, “The 2014 Biennial brings together the findings of three curators with very distinct points of view. There is little overlap in the artists they have selected and yet there is common ground. This can be seen in their choice of artists working in interdisciplinary ways, artists working collectively, and artists from a variety of generations. Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs This major exhibition is the most comprehensive ever devoted to Matisse’s paper cut-outs. It brings together around 120 works, many seen together for the first time, in a groundbreaking reassessment of Matisse’s colourful and innovative final works. Matisse’s first cut-outs were made between 1943 and 1947 and collected together in Jazz 1947 (Pompidou, Paris), a book of 20 plates. Copies, published by Teriade and featuring a text handwritten by Matisse, will be shown alongside the original cut-outs. The show will also include the largest number of Matisse’s Blue Nudes ever exhibited together, including the most significant of the group, Blue Nude I 1952 (above). Jenny Blanc developed her passion for interior design when, together with her former husband, chef Raymond Blanc, they created the Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons. Red light recognition Audi is ready to add a little oil to the wheels of the daily grind with advanced traffic light recognition technology which could make driving through towns and cities far more fluid and free of annoying red light punctuation. Audi Online traffic light information harnesses the power of in-car internet in a new way via Audi connect to establish a link between the car and the traffic light network via the central traffic computer in each town or city. It quickly assimilates the automated traffic light change sequences in the vicinity, and on the approach to a set of lights the Driver Information System (DIS) located in the central instrument cluster then shows the driver the speed to select in order to pass through the light during a green phase. It also displays a visual aid using red, amber or green icons. If the driver is already waiting at a red light, Audi connect will calculate and count down the time remaining until the next green light is scheduled to appear via a timer on the DIS. The system also interacts with the car’s Start-Stop function to ensure the engine is switched on five seconds before the green phase. Audi AG calculates that online traffic light interaction has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 15 per cent, and could save approximately 900 million litres of fuel if it were to be deployed throughout Germany. The fully functional system is now production ready and could be fitted to every Audi model in the range subject to the necessary government legislation.

Barbados is a tax efficient location with a highly secure banking system, in part because of the number of Canadian banks on the island. “The changes in residency laws have helped boost the market, encouraging high net worth individuals to buy and invest in Barbados. The new Special Entry Permit laws allow them an unlimited stay without the need to extend through the Immigration Department.” This year the island has experienced a ‘buzz of excitement’ and Chesterton Barbados has already tripled last year’s sales. It’s not surprising says Mr Kelly who points to the island’s stunning golf courses, many of which have private luxury residences such as Sandy Lane, Royal Westmoreland and Apes Hill. “Even though prices in some parts of Barbados have reduced by  per cent since , beachfront homes dropped only about five per cent on average, and some have experienced no decline at all because of their prime locations. Barbados was due a price correction and now is certainly the time to purchase a home on the island as we predict prices will start to rise again in ,” Mr Kelly advises. G ,  laid-back attitude to life and year round sunshine – Spain and the Balearic Islands have attracted tourists for decades. Many visitors to the country however decide to make their stay more permanent, purchasing second homes, especially in the holiday hotspots of the Costa del Sol, Costa Brava, Ibiza and Majorca. And of course owners can then rent out these properties to holidaymakers if they wish. Tourism figures for , announced by the Spanish Government in January, show a . per cent increase in the number of tourists to the country, compared to , exceeding  million for the first time. This puts Spain in third place in tourist rankings, behind France and the USA, but above China. Spending by tourists reached . billion between January and November  – an all-time record according to the government. Although Spain has not escaped the economic woes that have affected the rest of Europe, property prices appear to be stabilising; the luxury market has seen some decrease in prices, but the top end of the market seems buoyant nonetheless. Last year, Lucas Fox enjoyed its most successful year in its nineyear history, with increased demand for prime residential properties in Barcelona, Costa Brava, Mallorca and Ibiza. “The increase in sales transactions reflects heightened buyer confidence in the Spanish real-estate market and a general feeling among international investors that the market has bottomed out or is close to doing so,” says Lucas Fox co-founder, Alexander Vaughan. 94

Who’s buying?

The majority of enquiries and sales historically come from Europe – especially the UK, Switzerland, France, Scandinavia and Germany. However, that could be about to change as Spain’s Investor Residency Law, which grants automatic residency to non-EU investors buying property costing more than ,, takes effect. According to Carlo Walther, from Russian property website Idinaidi, which has seen an increase in searches for Spanish property over the past few months, “Spain is seen as enticing to many Russians due to its ‘Golden Visa’ arrangement, which permits non-EU citizens to obtain residency for themselves and their immediate family in return for investing a significant amount of capital.” Estate agencies Lucas Fox and Fine & Country Marbella have seen an increase in buyers from the Far East, Middle East and Russia since the introduction of the Golden Visa scheme. Michael Lovett from Fine & Country Marbella, says, “Prices in the upper quartile have remained steady and we are seeing mostly Russians and British buying these luxury villas in areas such as The Golden Mile, La Zagaleta and Sierra Blanca. We find that buyers either want to be on the beach or near a golf course so they can enjoy the restaurants and nightlife of the port and beachfront or the golf course and views.” And properties that require work are definitely off the menu, says Sotheby’s Chavarria Waschke. “Our typical client is looking for a newly built or completely refurbished home, preferably furnished to immaculate taste that they can just move in to and enjoy. Properties that need refurbishment are simply becoming less desirable.”  96

This apartment in Seventh Heaven was created with an international traveller in mind. The colour scheme for the living space is in stark contrast to the lush green space outside. The Perspex dining chairs were reupholstered in a champagne colour leatherette and a black cowhide was placed under the glass dining table. We decided to create an audio visual ‘wall’ to incorporate both the television and storage space within the whole wall space, thus creating areas for storage and also display. The bedrooms both have plenty of built-in wardrobe space but again, by adding a mirror we created a sense of space and light! The Master bedroom has beautiful crystal chandeliers offset against a modern headboard and bedside tables in beige leather to create a perfect blend of contemporary and traditional.
