Love, Fame, Tragedy

Aged 45, Picasso fell in love with MarieTerese Walter, a sumptuous 17-year-old whom he met in Paris by chance. The couple started an affair – Picasso was married to Russian ballerina Olga Khokhlova – and this show concentrates on just one year in that heady relationship, 1932.

Love inspired a fury of works – Picasso painted day and night and produced some 100 works ranging from large canvases to sketches. Three of the greatest paintings shown here for the first time were made in just five days.

Installed in an apartment opposite his, Picasso crept over to his mistress whenever he could, often returning to his studio to paint in post-coital ecstasy. Olga, busy with family and arranging their social life – Picasso was by now nothing short of a celebrity – did not suspect anything despite the highly sexualised images. The opening portrait shows Marie-Terese in a state of bedroom bliss, head thrown back, eyes closed, dreaming presumably of her famous lover. The variations on the theme of this secret love affair are endless – she is naked under a hot sun; she is curled up like a cat.

Though immortalised in these works, Picasso set Marie-Terese in time. How could she survive this rejection? Four years after his death, she committed suicide, thus the show's title: Love, Fame, Tragedy.

Ellen Kooi Nieuwe Meer - Surfplank | Camera Obscura 2016

Photo London howcasing the work of hundreds of artists, this show covers not only what is new but the best of the past: early photography from the 19th and 20th century can be seen at Bernard Quaritch and Robert Hershkowitz. Highlights of Photo London are of course the anxiously awaited winner of this year's Master of Photography award, who is Canadian fine art photographer Edward Burtynsky, whose work explores modern life in complex images of man and nature.

Atlas Gallery included new work by the Dusseldorf school photographer Andreas Gefeller. The Dusseldorf school is famous for spawning Andreas Gursky who, at £14 million, commands the highest price recorded for a photograph. Polaroid makes an interesting return at the Louise Alexander Gallery where personal snaps by Guy Bourdin feature models, friends and acquaintances that give a behind-the-scenes glimpse into his infamous fashion spreads.

TO DYE FOR Ikats from Central Aa You see the ikat design on everything from tablewear to jeans. How this came about is in part the subject of a new show at the Smithsonian's Sackler gallery. Ikat is made from tie dyed bundles of threads, often silk, woven in narrow strips to create the characteristic patterning.

Among the great examples of this skills art are the ikats made in multi-ethnic 19 century Central Asia. The finished ikats were transformed into brightly coloured and sumptuous robes for men and women and these works of art have long been collected by connoisseurs.

This show draws on a collection donated by Guido Goldman to the museum. Alongside are garments made by the late Oscar de la Renta, who incorporated ikat motifs into gowns made for Pierre Balmain.

country permitted to trade with Japan. It meant that the Dutch were already acquainted with Japanese artworks in the late 19th century when a rage for collecting them began. Hitherto unseen works of Kanagawa (Under The Wave) Hiroshige and other Japanese print makers had a powerful and lasting influence on Western aesthetics.

The first of these shows the impact this 'new vision' had on Van Gogh's art. The artist became fascinated by the 'floating world' or ukiyo-e – as depicted in 19th century Japanese woodcuts. He collected many prints before leaving Paris for Arles. The unconventional compositions, large planes in bright colours and focus on details in nature were all explored and he continued to see with a ‘Japanese eye’ to the end of his life. Such works include the famous Almond Blossom painted in 1890 for his brother Theo and his wife Jo's baby son, also called Vincent.

A sister show, Mesdaq & Japan, introduces the visitor to Japanese artifacts admired and collected by seascape artist Hendrik Willem Mesdaq.

here’s little doubt that getting back to nature brings with it a definite sense of well-being. So, if you can bring a feeling of being outdoors inside with lots of sunlight and natural finishes and textures throughout the space, all the better.

Alexander James Interiors’ goal is to help each client maximise the full potential of their home, introducing bespoke designs which are tailored to their individual requirements. The company designed the garden dining room featured here which is full of traditional Cotswolds’ charm. It has a relaxed country style scheme with lots of patterns and textures for a tranquil and homely interior.

Stacey Sibley, the company’s creative director, explains, “The glass link uniting the barn with the main

house creates a stunning, light dining room with a full-length wall of windows looking out across the central courtyard. This formed a seamless transition, bringing the beautiful garden indoors, an important feature of garden room design.

“We adopted an organic, earthy scheme, with a traditional Cotswold stone wall acting as the perfect backdrop to the design. Copper tones were used in this room as the tone of the metal sits beautifully with the exposed, tumbled brick walls and is echoed in the large, studded edging on the offwhite linen chairs and also in the bird cage ceiling lights and tear drop wall lights. The oversized arch framed mirrors are used along the back stone wall to imitate a row of windows, effectively reflecting the garden back into the dining room.

“The aviary lighting pieces are a strong influence in this design, acting as the basis of the nature inspired avian theme.

The lighting reflects beautiful patterns on the ceiling, adding further depth and detail to the design. A theme of nature is an effective way of perfectly integrating a garden room with the outdoors.

“We used a chunky wooden table in lime washed Oakwood, with a detailed criss-cross top and carved base, placed upon a thick hessian rug with a rich olive and lime bordered edge. The rustic, wooden sideboard in the corner sits against the stone wall, creating a contrast of textures within the neutral palette of colours. We recommend earthy materials in garden rooms for an organic fee and added gentle accents of green in our dining table design to reinforce the botanical nature of the scheme.”  www.aji.co.uk

Wilkinson Beven, a company specialising in designing beautiful residential interiors in the UK and around the world, was asked to design a Caribbean beachside cabana. Working alongside the project architect, the client’s brief was for the cabana to be in-keeping with the property’s style, allowing its location by the sea to be enjoyed to its full.

John Beven, director of Wilkinson Beven, explains, “Its aim was to provide intimacy and shelter during the day and an escape from the main house in the evening. Specifying light, ‘beachy’ fabrics suitable for the location allowed conventional interior furniture to be used in an exposed setting. This enables a higher level of comfort to be achieved, while driftwood coffee tables provide a sense of being on the beach.

“Louvered shutters provide an intimacy retaining a circulation of air important for Caribbean living, allowing the main view to be seaward and the cabana to be a place of escape from the rest of the property’s landscape. Glass balustrades to the front retain the views but also give shelter when seated. Quality external fabrics allow the comfort level of interior furniture to be used in a challenging open environment, making the space feel more interior linked to a luxury interior than an external garden space.”  www.wilkinsonbeven.com

here’s little doubt that, for many, the thought of spending long, indulgent days and nights aboard a beautifully equipped vessel is very appealing. However, this type of floating paradise doesn’t come without its major expense and responsibilities. Not only is there the initial, significant purchase price to consider, there are ongoing maintenance and upkeep charges, mooring and marina fees,

not to mention the actual navigation and handling of the superyacht. That’s why chartering could be the perfect option for those who would like to try before they buy or simply wish to have all of the fun with no hassle.

Burgess Yachts specialises in the sale, purchase, new construction, charter and management of mega yachts. Alev Karagulle, director of marketing and communications at Burgess, says, “We offer a wide cross-section of superyachts for charter from about 35 metres up to the very largest of 100 metres and over. The common denominator is that all the yachts offered for charter by Burgess must meet rigorously high standards of maintenance, operation and customer service levels. Charters are fully customised and there are no ‘set’ itineraries as on a cruise ship holiday. The minimum duration for a charter is generally one week and once a chosen yacht and cruising itinerary have been confirmed as available, a charter agreement will be drawn up upon which a deposit will be payable to secure the yacht.

Selecting the yacht and defining the cruising itinerary can be a lengthy process as there are many variables

to consider. It is therefore advisable to plan early to ensure availability of the best yachts.

The cost of the charter includes the hire of the yacht with crew and the yacht’s insurance. All other costs are excluded and are charged to the charterer ‘at cost’. These comprise: provisioning for meals, drinks, fuel for the yacht, tenders and motorised watersports, dockage, incidentals and the discretionary crew gratuity.

he storms which hit parts of the Caribbean last autumn have only registered a temporary blip in the lure of owning a tropical island retreat. Rick Moeser, executive director, Christie’s International Real Estate reports, “The island lifestyle is enduring in its appeal. After last fall’s storms, pricing paused in order to assess what the long-term impact might be. That question was answered in part three months later on the island of St Barth’s when the lovely beachside compound of Girasol sold near its asking price of $67 million. This is a sterling example of the long-term confidence in the Caribbean market.

“I see prices going back up. There is a sense of optimism and camaraderie after the devastation of the storms. People rolled up their sleeves and got to work cleaning up in order to restore normalcy. I predict we will see normalcy return to the luxury real estate market, as well.”

According to Edward de Mallet Morgan, head of Knight Frank Caribbean Sales, boutique island resorts are currently seeing strong market activity. “Mustique for example is unique as a private island resort, has a long-established market and prices have remained stable for 10 years plus,” he says. “People like to buy property in places that have a unique selling point and Mustique has a wonderful group of interesting owners, a very well preserved and uncommercial natural environment, is incredibly safe and has a wide range of different properties.

“From classical Caribbean and Colombia style, Italian, Miami Beach to Indian, Asian, Japanese and contemporary. Mr Tivenius is finding that buyers of high-end properties have become younger than ever before over the last couple of years. “In Sweden we have seen many successful new companies being started by young people, especially in the IT sector,” he explains. These companies have been sold for high prices; money that, in many cases, has been invested in luxury properties. Also, the Swedish economy has been very successful during the same period with good profits for sea views or, preferably, a seaside lot.

“In Sweden and Stockholm, in particular, there has been decline in house prices during the fall of 2017.

Prices are down approximately 10 % since August 2017. The reason for the decline is mainly found in the restrictions for the banks in allowing mortgages and the fact that the prices have been rising too fast the last couple of years. hen Yngve Bergqvist introduced the idea of Icehotel in 1989 the reaction he got was ice cold. How could Jukkasjärvi, a tiny speck on the map, in the middle of the northernmost part of Sweden even attract locals?

Today, Icehotel is one of Sweden’s most important tourism destinations with around 50,000 visitors from all over the world – year-round.

Cycling, river rafting, ice sculpting and fishing are offered while the sun shines through day and night for 50 consecutive days during summer. In winter, a unique Icehotel opens and skiing, husky sledding, northern light tours and ice sculpting are on the agenda.

There are two ways of spending the night, in hotel rooms made of ice and snow or in warm cabins. Most people stay one night in ‘cold’ accommodation and the other nights in the warm. The cold rooms never drop below -5C but an Icehotel guide holds a ‘survival course’ in the evening. This includes informing guests on how to dress appropriately and use the Arctic sleeping bags. Every morning, staff wakes guests with hot lingonberry juice. When checking out or moving into warm accommodation, guests are given a diploma stating the date and temperature inside and outside Icehotel on the night they stayed there.

When the hotel melts each year in spring, what’s left are the 20 suites made of ice and snow inside Icehotel 365, which can be experienced all year round. This permanent construction accommodates nine Deluxe Suites with private sauna and bathroom, 11 Art Suites, an ice gallery and Icebar all hand carved by select artists from around the globe.  www.icehotel.com

he Palm Jumeirah is currently the world’s largest man-made island.

It is comprised of a two-kilometre long trunk, a crown made up of 17 fronds and a surrounding crescent. The island features beachfront properties, including waterfront apartments, villas, restaurants and hotels, all with spectacular views of the sea. The residential areas are located on the trunk and fronds of the island while hotels are located on the Crescent that surrounds The Palm.
