I found this most helpful as, having gradually redecorated the whole house, I’ve left the bedrooms until last. This is mainly because I feel they are such important places to get right and so easy to get wrong. While you want to create a perfect oasis of peace, you certainly don’t want them to look bland and dull. As with so many things in life, striking the right balance is key. I now look forward to putting their ideas into practice – perhaps starting with a sea lavender theme for the main bedroom to suit a listed property overlooking the coast.

ll season weather, international schooling, quality of life and capital growth potential makes Switzerland an attractive place to invest in property. Charlie McKee of Hindle & Baldock, comments, “In the winter you can be skiing but in the summer you can enjoy activities such as cycling, golf, walking, mountain biking and fishing whilst admiring the beautiful wildlife that surrounds you. These attributes have also made some Swiss resorts very popular with active retirees. Most resorts are easy to get to from the UK and property values have steadily appreciated for many years, coupled with the strong Swiss franc.” House prices are notoriously high here. “Verbier for example, is expensive – there is no getting away from it,” says Mr McKee. “The place has a very strong brand and social scene, and of course world class skiing. Like anywhere, proximity to the slopes commands a huge premium, especially since availability for foreigners to buy has restrictions. These are of course reasons why values should be well underpinned.”
International schools have a big impact on house prices and nine or 10 of the most expensive schools in the world are located in Switzerland. “Drawing on its success in attracting multinational corporations, in the cities up to 50% or more of the top international school students’ parents are expats in the corporate sector, with fees often subsidised,” explains Mr McKee. “It is no surprise, however, some of these schools are in the mountains. Students come from all over the world, some of whom have never experienced skiing before. They graduate from novice to expert on the slopes pretty quickly. The draw for parents, those with deep pockets, is considerable. A genuinely international environment, and education, for tomorrow’s citizens, and CEOs, of the world. “The daddy of them all is eye-wateringly expensive, 136 year old Le Rosey, where the winter term is spent at the Gstaad campus, spring and summer spent at Chateau du Rosey on the shores of Lake Geneva. Classes are in French and English, but the student mix is truly international, albeit with a 10% cap on individual nationalities. From January to March, lessons end at lunchtime so students can ski, or participate in other mountain sports, in the afternoon. There is an ever expanding waiting list for Le Rosey, ‘who you are’ no longer guarantees a place, it has become considerably more academically selective.” Development can be limited and there are restrictions on who can buy what in Switzerland, meaning availability is often limited for foreign buyers. However, Simon Malster, managing director of Investors in Property, reports that over the last six months his company has had more enquiries than ever before for high-end Swiss property. “In particular buyers are after large chalets in the top resorts like Zermatt, Verbier and Grindelwald,” he explains. “Over half of our buyers are outside the UK and come from all over the world – Switzerland is particularly popular with buyers living in Dubai, Hong Kong and the main capital cities of Europe. Post Brexit we have been surprised to see that the high level of enquiries has continued even from UK based clients.” International Property & Travel

Philippe Parreno
Tate Modern and Hyundai Motor have announced that French artist Philippe Parreno will undertake this year’s Hyundai Commission for the Turbine Hall. Parreno (b. 1964) works across film, video, sound, sculpture, performance and information technology. A key artist of his generation, he explores the borders between reality and fiction and is known for investigating and redefining the gallery-going experience as an immersive encounter. The Hyundai Commission is a series of site-specific installations by contemporary artists in Tate Modern’s iconic Turbine Hall. It is made possible by a unique long-term partnership between Tate and Hyundai Motor, confirmed until 2025 as part of the longest initial commitment from a corporate sponsor in Tate’s history. With this in mind, promoting optimum rest through a calm and relaxing environment is a main priority when considering bedroom design. Casa Forma London’s international team of interior designers and architects spanning over nine nationalities provides comprehensive design services and interiors for properties both in the UK and abroad. Faiza Seth, founder of Casa Forma London, says, “One of the first things we always look to address when designing a contemporary bedroom interior is the use of space. Often large properties can be over-filled with furnishings and lose a lot of the space that is needed to give a spacious and luxurious ambience. By keeping to a warm, natural colour palette, using discrete storage such as integrated wardrobes, and ensuring that decorative furnishings and artwork are kept to a few quality pieces; a more spacious and calmer setting is created.” The Casa Forma London team often uses dark accents in its design schemes
such as walnut, black glass and dark silks to create a rich and opulent accent to a neutral timeless interior design. Radhika Seth, the company’s CEO, explains, “When we start work on a property, in any room, we always look to see if we can increase the ceiling height, thereby naturally lifting the level of ambient light in a room without adding artificial light. If structural limitations mean that this is not possible, we raise the door height to create the illusion of light and space. Similarly, a lot of our properties use bespoke materials that increase the level of light while also adding beautiful and unusual effects to a room such as gilt decorative glass, black mirrors or Tahitian mother of pearl.” Bedrooms are the inner sanctuary of the house, and so the team likes to build in warm, organic textures with the use of silks, leather, shagreen, wood and cashmere. “While colour schemes should always be chosen to fit the property,” advises Faiza, “lighter tones are often more apt in an older property to make the property look a little lighter and more open and modern. On the other hand new builds allow a greater freedom in choosing colours. In general, natural and neutral colours are good choices for bedrooms and allow for a wide range of colours to be incorporated into the fixtures and furnishings.”

The art of interior design
Jo Hamilton, who has been running her own highly successful interior design consultancy for more than 20 years, believes that luxury interior design is an art. She is the resident interior designer at Grand Designs, where she is also a key speaker and show ambassador with Kevin McCloud, and also runs one and two-day interior design courses at five-star Central London hotels. Jo takes on residential and commercial interior design commissions both in the UK and abroad and also offers a high-end property search service for London and the wider region. She explains, “Different elements must be carefully considered and delicately balanced to form a beautiful, cohesive picture to suit the client perfectly. “The first element to consider is colour and asking, ‘how do I want the space to feel?’ If it’s vibrant and lively then use more colour. Warmer tones such as reds, oranges and yellows give a lovely lift, but don’t go overboard – keep it elegant with a neutral base complemented by lively pops of colour. If, however, you’re going for a calming and restful space, then cooler-toned colours such as blues, greens and violets work well, as do neutral schemes. Be aware though,
that neutral schemes need added interest — sculptural shapes and varying textures. Layer linens, velvets, neutral-toned patterns and metallic finishes to set the scheme off.” Sculptural shape was integral to the success of Jo’s Hampstead scheme (above). The mirror, softly curved deco-shaped furniture and lamps add interest, while the textures of the hand-painted silk wallpaper, shimmery silk rug, cushions and velvetcovered chairs add warmth. “Don’t be afraid to think outside the box,” she advises, “be creative when it comes to the layout element. List what you want to achieve and think back from there. A client in Mayfair (below left) wanted a dressing room and also a seating area in the window. It seemed a crime to chop the space up into two rooms, so I designed a walkaround dressing room. “The pendant lights either side of the bed frame the bed and maximise the usable bedside table space. The colour here really sets the mood. The green brings a wonderful calm, but the pink bench lifts the scheme – it’s unpredictable and playful, and the colour and texture both add warmth.” Finally, does the building have a story to tell? And does that story work with your
personal taste? “If it’s a yes,” says Jo, “then bring out the architectural features and choose furniture to complement the style. Avoid being too contrived because an eclectic, organic feel often works best. My Greenwich Village scheme (below), for example, includes a handmade chandelier, antique glass mirror and recovered antique chairs. “If it’s a no, then contrast the style. If you have an Edwardian home, for example, but you don’t like the era, contrast with a super-contemporary, sleek interior. The most important element in any home design is you. Be comfortable with your space – make your home right for you.”

Barbara Martinuzzi of Martinuzzi Interiors based in Zurich, Switzerland believes that the key to designing a luxury bedroom is ‘attractive simplicity’. “In a high-end bedroom design the bed should be the focal point of the room,” she explains, “leaving the rest of the furniture around at the minimal design, adapting it with neutral colours and essential lines. “The walls are often left free, except for the one that frames the bed, granting the character and the style of the entire room. The colour palette remains mostly neutral and warm but on a dark tone to create a relaxing atmosphere and a sophisticated feel.”
However, Barbara points out that simplicity is made of complex things. “My vision of luxury in the bedroom shown includes wood panels with dim lighting, leaning against the wall on top of the bed, on a smoked mirrored niche. As a piece of art this design creates a mysterious impression that enhances the bedroom’s appeal. Natural light is welcomed inside through floor-toceiling windows. “To achieve a dashing luxury vibe, the design concept should take into account to accompany the bedroom with an elegant walk-in closet, making the entire space feel like a presidential suite. In the customised walk-in closet pictured, the geometry of lines meets the texture of fabrics in a contrast that leaves a powerful feeling of elegance and makes it uniquely attractive.” Barbara says that another important element of a luxury bedroom derives from the quality of our sleep. “Therefore, top quality bed linen is fundamental as it enhances excellence but mostly well being to our nights. Curtains and carpets with rich and precious fabrics enhance the cocoon feeling with a chic touch.” She also advises that less is more. “Few but selected accessories, such as beautiful black and white pictures or a design vase, are some of the details that add an extra luxury note to the entire ambiance.”

Their aim is to ensure the AM-RB 001 is an unprecedented fusion of form and function: a car engineered to be entirely enjoyable as a road car, but with the capability to perform like no other before it on a racetrack. Bespoke from the tyres up, the AM-RB 001 will be built by David King, Aston Martin VP and Chief Special Operations Officer, and his team at Gaydon. A track-only AM-RB 001 is also in development. Jaguar Classic has announced that the hotlyanticipated continuation Jaguar XKSS will receive its world debut presentation in November this year in California. Production will be limited to just nine examples, hand-crafted by Jaguar Classic expert technicians and manufactured to the exact same specification as those produced in 1957. Often referred to as the world’s first supercar, Jaguar originally made the XKSS as a road-going version of the Le Mans winning D-type. Cars built in ’57 were originally earmarked for export to the US but disaster struck and a number were lost to the Browns Lane fire of the same year. Now, 59 years later, Jaguar will build the nine ‘lost’ XKSS sports cars for a select group of established collectors and customers. Rolls-Royce Summer Studio in Sardinia unveiled two bespoke motor cars, commissioned to reflect the atmosphere of Porto Cervo. The essence of this glamorous marina on the Costa Smerelda is now embodied in a Wraith, the marque’s most powerful motor car ever created, and a Dawn, the recently launched drophead coupé. Themed from ‘Dusk until Dawn’, the ambient hues of dusk feature on the bespoke Wraith, while the Dawn has been specified to capture the vibrancy and vivid colour of the Porto Cervo seascape. The Wraith features a twotone silver exterior reflecting the fading daylight, whilst a purple feature line hints at the interior. On opening the doors, twilight is depicted using shades of blue, purple, slate and black complemented by ostrich leather. The Dawn’s emerald green exterior is offset against a distinct seashell and green leather interior with open-pore teak. A bespoke teak boot floor mat has also been created for the luggage compartment, continuing the nautical theme. Last but not least, emeralds and mother of pearl are set into white gold and presented on the fascia set in the shape of the emblem of Porto Cervo.

he Ferrari Passione event at Silverstone on September 23rd and 24th promises two days of exciting on-track action,
paddock displays and parades from the Prancing Horse. Joining Ferrari at the famed F1 circuit in Northamptonshire will be ex-Ferrari F1 driver, Rene Arnoux, who will be showcasing the XX programme and providing on-track demonstrations in the 599XX and FXX K track cars. The on-track action also includes a round of the Pirelli Ferrari Formula Classic Series, organised and managed by the Ferrari Owners Club GB, which allows cars from the 308 GTB to the F355 to compete on track in a competitive racing format, with grids of around 30 cars competing in different categories to allow for the performance differences from cars of different eras. Ferrari North Europe will be hosting 1,000 Ferrari VIP clients in an exclusive hospitality area overlooking the pit lane and the main start/finish line, with hospitality tickets available exclusively for Ferrari owners via the official Ferrari Dealer Network. Ferrari clients will be able to pre-book time on track for driving their own cars, or to test drive a car from the current Ferrari range both on road and on track. prices of used business aircraft tumbled during the recession. Typically, advises Mr Galanopoulos, a client will buy an aircraft if they are expecting to fly some 150-200 hours per year, themselves. Luxaviation UK will then manage the aircraft and, if they wish to charter it, do so when it is not being used by the owner. “We can achieve an additional 300-400 hours by chartering the aircraft,” he says. “The income from this will pay the overheads and contribute towards the owner’s operating costs. capital city that’s as famous for its distinct roofscapes as for its parks, London perhaps 50 years ago was relatively low-rise. However, since the turn of the millennium, new-builds have becomie increasingly high-rise. The Heron, The Gherkin and The Shard are to London as Bank of China Tower is to Hong Kong and as the World Trade Centre Tower III and Fortune Plaza are to Beijing. Gary Hersham of Beauchamp Estates observes that as cities have evolved so have the interests of property buyers. “Previously buyers have tended to have greater interest in established or historical properties, now there is a growing market for new build homes that can more easily offer the very latest innovations and ultimate luxury and convenience. Penthouses are increasingly an important part of this mix. While London has no shortage of new developments, the availability of penthouses in the market remains limited and hence exclusive.”
A new report has revealed that there are an additional 119 new buildings of 20 floors or more planned for London since March last year. This takes the total number of tall buildings in the London development pipeline to 436. While the rapidly expanding and filling London skyline may bring a few more penthouses to the market, they will be scant in number, ensuring that the room at the top retains its cache. Mr Hersham says, “A great many people dream of living in a luxury high-rise penthouse in a super city: but only a fortunate few will ever be able to call such amazing locations home, and in the most part they are homes, used either as a permanent or second residence.” Richard Bernstone, director of Aston Chase, believes that penthouses have always spelled glamour and excitement to would-be buyers as the term signals the ‘flagship’ or the best that is on offer within a new development. He explains, “By virtue of being on the top floor, if lateral, the space will dominate and International Property & Travel

be far greater than the apartments below; if duplex, the design will allow for flair and style more than other apartments in the building. “In recent years volume has become a feature in penthouse apartments whereby low ceilinged modern blocks have disappeared being replaced by greater ceiling heights, which are often even higher in the exclusive homes including floor to ceiling windows and doors on to roof terraces.” Mr Bernstone advises that, to be a true penthouse, outside terracing is a must and generally the specification is amplified for these exclusive units providing luxury on a par with any individual multi-million pound home. “Often, they can be the first units to sell,” he says, “and I have known buyers to track the development for over two years before the development was finally released for sale. The price of the penthouse can often set a positive benchmark for the other apartments in a building.” A number of Redrow Homes’ developments including the Tower Apartments at Northway House and the properties at Blake Tower are within tall buildings. Tina Dedman, the company’s divisional sales and marketing director, says, “They are often located in former office blocks or under-utilised sites which we transform into beautiful homes. There are a number of benefits to this approach - we are able to meet London’s growing housing demand by offering a high number of properties within a concentrated space and secondly, we are able to regenerate and bring buildings back into use rather than start from scratch. “In a city such as London, where space is at a premium, there is always demand for properties located within towers. They also maximise views of its iconic skyline, ensuring properties in tall buildings stand out and are suited to today’s discerning buyers. We expect to see the demand for such homes continue to rise, as the skyline changes and a higher premium is put on space.” 96
