Female artists are in the limelight. Andrea Marechal Watson looks at major shows in Metz, New York, Bilbao and London

Suzanne Valadon:

A WORLD  ONE ’ S OWN

The title of the new exhibition at the Centre Pompidou Metz is a reference to Virginia Woolf’s 1929 opus A Room of One’s Own, which commented on the restrictions imposed on female artists by the lack of a private space in which they could work.

French artist, Suzanne Valadon (18651938), had already broken free from suchlike restraints, not only in defining her own space but also the material suitable for a female to paint. In 1912 she began to paint a series of large outdoor nudes – an area previously reserved for males – which caused some consternation at the time. Valadon’s career – she was first a model before turning to painting – as well as her independence from avant-garde movements, held her reputation back. She was an ‘outsider’ but many critics applauded her work and one Bernard Dorival described her as the “most virile –and greatest – of all women painters”.

This large retrospective assembles paintings, drawings and other material from world collections to offer as complete an overview of Valadon as possible.

It is remarkable that institutions that formerly obscured the work of females such as Valadon are now so active in promoting the very works they buried. The resolutely raw and uncompromisingly painted nudes seen here are one result.

Although free and independent, she was part of the artistic constellation of her time, bridging one century and the next. She

adopted her friend Degas’s etching technique and borrowed Renoir’s iridescent effects in pastel. She was also influenced by the symbolist work of Puvis de Chavannes, whose refusal to bend to the tide of realism echoed her own spirit.

Valadon’s strength was this artistic independence: she could embrace abstraction and Cubism but also championed figurative painting.

The 200 works in the exhibition (50 from the Musée National d’Art Modern alone) include loans from the Musée d’Orsay and Metropolitan Museum of Art. Such rich provenances bear witness to the eclecticism of her work.

JAUNE QUICK-TO-SEE-SMITH: Memory Map

his is the first time in its 92-year history that New York’s Whitney Museum has organised a retrospective for a Native American. It has now tried to make up for this exclusion by mounting a giant show that fills its two floors. Memory Map brings together 50 years of work by Jaune Quick-toSee Smith including drawings, prints, paintings, and sculptures. It is the largest and most comprehensive showing of her career to date.

The result is this so-called Memory Map – a lifetime collection of works in which Smith explores Indigenous themes.

Her paintings, collages and other works are forged from ideas of race, land, culture and history but also, curiously, are infused with the influences of white male artists, notably Jasper Johns and Paul Klee.

“I began with the premise that the map didn’t belong to Jasper Johns, the map was an abstract image of stolen land in this country, so how could I turn the map into a new story?” she has said.

Jaune – meaning yellow – was given the soubriquet Quick to See by an aunt because she was very bright.

Monet in Full Light

Despite a difficult start her spirit enabled her to overcome the prejudices and obstacles she faced. She was Accompanied by his friend and colleague Pierre-Auguste Renoir, the French impressionist Claude Monet first visited Monte Carlo in 1883. Coming from the north, he was smitten by the city, and in particular with the dynamic light created by the Mediterranean sun and sea. Marking the 140th anniversary of his first momentous visit – one that was to have a lasting impact on his work – the Grimaldi Forum Monaco has devoted its major summer exhibition to the master. There are more than 100 works to see culled from across the world, with many coming from private collections.

It is a great chance to follow Monet’s work at a pivotal moment in his life. The exhibition includes works never seen in public before. The highlight is a collection of 25 works created in the area which can be seen for the first time near the landscapes where they were painted. These include several views of Monte Carlo seen from a distance which evoke landscapes, townscapes and views of more intimate local scenes such as pine and olive groves that remain timeless and little altered.

Nevertheless Smith, who is a citizen of the Salish and Kootenai Nation based in Montana, forged a career in this very field. Smith’s first painting structured on the map of the United States was Indian Map 1992 and it takes pride of place here. The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition

Every year a new curator is given the task of arranging the multitude of images that pour into the Royal Academy for the biggest open submission art show in the world. This year the task has fallen to David Remfry RA. He has chosen to opt for plain coloured walls and rather bland works to match connected it seems by nothing more that the chosen theme – Only Connect. Over the next two months thousands of visitors will attempt to work out why these items have made the final cut.

Mixed media and textiles play a big part in the mix and for the Wohl Central Hall Renfrey has chosen a vast mobile covered in blue drapes that look like unwanted curtains. The most controversial piece may not be Allen Jones’s stripper but the poke at Hockey’s pool series by Brummie comedian Joe Lycett entitled I Drink a Crisp, Cold Beer in a Pool in Los Angeles While Gary Lineker Looks on in Disgust. Priced at a presumably joke (or is it?) £1,354,999 Lycett will certainly be laughing his way to the bank if it sells. And this is the really good part of the Summer Exhibition. Most everything is for sale from about £200 upwards. If you have the stamina to assess the 1,613 works and don’t care too much about the future of your ‘investment’ this is a great hunting ground.

Yayoi Kusama: 1945

Little wonder that Yayoi Kusama is mad about polka dots. Since girlhood she has relied upon the motif to inspire works as diverse as ceramics and immersive videos – her so called Infinity Rooms. A painting of dots propelled her into third place as the world’s most expensive female artist and more recently Sotheby’s sold one of her (very many) polka dotted pumpkins for £6million.

Kusama (b. 1929) has lived and worked in a mental asylum since 1973 when she had a nervous breakdown. At least she is safe there from any negative reviews of works such the Infinity Rooms: “about as artistic as a lava lamp” said one critic although the public will queue for hours to get a selfie inside these swirling lamps.

The Guggenheim show gives us a chance to look beyond the commercialised and crowdpleasing Kusama and understand her origins. Ordered chronologically and thematically, the show investigates the themes – repetition, celestial bodies and the experience of the infinite that Kusama means to explore.

The 200 paintings, sculptures, moving images and installations include some of the first drawings she made as a teenager during World War II. Kusama’s morbidly fascinating back story, plus the backing of gallerists David Zwirner and Gagosian, has given her iconic status but it says rather a lot that a recent show of Kusama’s giant yellow polka dotted balls in Chicago shared its space with the gift shop.

Lamborghini organised a spectacular 60th birthday party for the brand, featuring the launch of their latest supercar, the Revuelto, at Silverstone on the 29th of April.

They also showcased every single one of their models since the inception of their supercar production. Owners and fans from across the UK and overseas flocked to the event to partake in the birthday celebration and catch a glimpse of the Revuelto, which was unveiled in the grand auditorium of the Wing grandstand at Silverstone.

Lamborghini Chairman and CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, took the stage as the first speaker, accompanied by Chief Technical Officer Rouven Mohr and Head of Design Mitja Borker. The Revuelto is the world’s first super sports V12 hybrid plug-in HPEV (High Performance Electrified Vehicle), capable of exhilarating anyone who drives it and surpassing all other road cars on the market.

I arrived early to find the vast Silverstone paddock zone already filled with hundreds of Lamborghinis, with cars continuously being guided to rapidly disappearing parking spaces.

Based on my estimation, there were over 600 owners and their guests in attendance, setting a world record for the number of Lamborghinis gathered. A remarkable fleet of 390 cars lined up on the Silverstone starting grid for a parade lap. At the designated moment, the multitude of brightly coloured vehicles, boasting nearly 5000 cylinders, ignited in a deafening roar, following the pace cars around the circuit. The sound equalled that of 20 Formula 1 grids starting simultaneously.

I doubt that Silverstone has ever witnessed such a simultaneous ignition of 200,000 petrol-fuelled horsepower, and it may never witness such a spectacle again-unless Lamborghini decides to repeat it in celebration of their 70th anniversary.

Ihave driven a number of rare breed 4x4 cars that are as far removed from utility vehicles used by farmers to feed their herds on the Scottish Highlands as you could possibly get. They are designed to combine elegance, luxury, and performance to give owners a versatile everyday car. The all-weather tyres may never see mud, snow, or ice, and even if they did, it wouldn’t be a problem. But the only car capable of handling rough terrain and pristine tarmac race tracks with equal measure would be the Lamborghini Urus.

Even though it is a large car, the sleek bodylines make it appear closer to the ground than it actually is. My first drive was on tarmac but not on the motorway; it was on the back roads of Essex, empty of traffic, with seating lofty enough to see across the hedgerows, giving me a clear view of the corners I was tackling.

The very wide tyres and fourwheel drivetrain took the Urus around bends at high speeds safely, without any detectable body roll, while still maintaining a comfortable ride. Essex is not known for its hills, but I had a date with the Goodwood Members Race meeting in Chichester, which meant driving over the beautiful and wild South Downs, a 260 square mile (670km²) area stretching across Sussex and Hampshire.

Where there are downs, there are ups, and the downs include 10 peaks, with the highest being Butser Hill, at 270 metres above sea level. I made East Lavington, my waypoint, a little closer to sea level at 255 metres. Roads traversing hills or mountains often include many curves, with trees and steep sides preventing the sun from drying out the road. Hazards such as mud and leaf matter can make bends treacherous. Take one of these too quickly, and you would find yourself disappearing into the scenery, but that was my intention. Finding a suitable spot with no fence or barrier, I left the road, and within minutes, I was in the wild. I

increased the ride height and terrain settings and quickly gave the shiny silver-painted Urus designer mud splashes on its flanks.

When I later rejoined the road, passing drivers stopped to marvel at the sight of the Urus emerging from the undergrowth, looking ever so slightly more military.

It had been raining for a number of days, so when I arrived at Goodwood, the parking fields next to the circuit were full of cars that had churned the ground into a paste. The Urus felt at home, and if only it had a tow bar, I could have helped an unfortunate Ferrari driver extract his 812 Superfast from the mire.

The sun came out, and Goodwood was glorious. Since I was spending two days in the area, I headed to my hotel in Hayling Island and stopped at a marina by a slipway used to launch boats from trailers. The tide was out but on the turn, and the early evening sun provided an excellent photo opportunity, so I drove the freshly washed Urus onto the wet seashore, hoping the car wouldn’t sink and become the front-page headline in the local newspaper. Now, the people drinking on the Ship Inn pub terrace had something else to gaze at. Pictures taken and the tide heading inshore, I noticed the tyres were no longer on the surface. After a heart-stopping moment while the wheels found grip, I drove the car back onto the slipway to see the Ship’s customers raising a glass to the Urus.

Although the film didn’t directly inspire him, it helped reignite interest in his father’s achievements, opening doors for potential opportunities. Freddie’s personal and professional growth during his time away laid the foundation for his comeback.

In 2022, Freddie’s determination and aspirations led him to sign with Reiter Engineering, embarking on the “Hunt for Le Mans” project. However, as the development process moves into the construction phase, we are able to delegate tasks to our capable team.”

CCI Tatu City – A Contact Centre For A Cleaner Future

CCI Tatu City is being developed as a sustainable, purpose-built Contact Centre for CCI Global – a leading Business Process Outsourcing provider in Africa. The one-of-a-kind, state of the art, 5000 seat facility is located in Nairobi’s new sustainability focused economic zone; Tatu City. The 2500 acre development will include world class, future proof infrastructure that is poised to be the center of business and growth in Kenya, a setting that suits CCI’s corporate goals to create positive socioeconomic impact and job creation across Africa. The LEED certified Grade A office building is custom-designed; with employee welfare and sustainability at its core to reflect CCI’s outlook for the future and the culture of the business. Largescale recreational areas, sleek and modern design elements with large floor plates for flexible call center operations, rapid lifts for seamless shift changes, plenty of woods, stone and ample natural light, CCI Tatu City is intended to spearhead the evolution of Contact Centre design. CCI Tatu City will also include in house training and recruitment divisions to support and welcome new employees as it seeks to create a seamless process to support CCI’s job creation goals.

The five floor and two level underground parking facility will be an anchor to Tatu Central, the business district of Tatu City and support CCI’s expansion amid unprecedented demand for the company’s young, highly skilled workforce in Kenya, which has swelled to over 3,000 contact center agents, making it Kenya’s largest Outsourcing provider. The new facility at Tatu City is scheduled for completion in Q1 2024.
