Spread over 3,824 square metres, The Bespoke holds a prime location at the entrance to Tankah Bay, with 50 metres of direct beachfront access.

The integration of exclusive, personalised service, such as the kind commonly found in boutique hotels, was made necessary by the development’s proximity to the Tulum archaeological zone, at just 9km away. Muro Rojo Arquitectura, renowned for their work in the Riviera Maya, boutique hotels and high-end residential architecture, were brought on board for this task.

From the outset, this project was envisioned to be completely ‘tailor-made,’ offering 22 unique housing units, ranging from one to two levels and spanning 100 to 400 square metres. The development also includes exclusive highend amenities such as a beach club, bar, spa with a Nordic circuit and a fully equipped gym.

Dream AMERICAN the

In this special feature, we journey across the United States of America discovering the projects of some of the country’s most talented architects and designers currently working.

The influence of traditional American style architecture is apparent in works by studios such as Haver & Skolnick and Barker Architecture Studio, both of whom draw on classic American and European elements to seamlessly merge their projects into the surrounding environment, all whilst updating their buildings for the modern era.

This drive for the future is similarly echoed by architects Phil Kean Design Group and Studio Gang, whose designs seek to challenge pre-existing ideas of public architecture.

Designers such as Onyx & Oak Interior Design, En Masse Architecture & Design and Studio Sven report seeing a re-emergence of colour, patterns and the desire for statement pieces. Lauren Svenstrup of Studio Sven comments that, “We have always embraced the bold, and have never shied away from the moodier hues. It is refreshing to see the masses embrace this design direction again.”

Indeed, a new design direction that places personality as the central focus seems to be the future, as embodied by R/terior Studio, which uses loud colours and charming designs to reflect thier

clients’ sense of self. Likewise, Jessica Helgerson Interior Design and Brad Ramsey Interiors choose to fully embrace their clients’ lifestyles, often re-designing floor layouts to optimise the usable space.

These architects and designers from all across the United States are driving the trends in residential and commercial design, pushing boundaries and re-shaping the future of property design in the Land of Opportunity. Read on to discover more…

BERGEN STREET BROWNSTONE

Curves, stone and a rich colour palette were the primary ingredients used to utterly transform this New York home.

ALEXANDRA BARKER

Principal, Leed AP

BAAO Barker

Architecture Office www.baaostudio.com

In a historic Brooklyn townhouse, Alexandra Barker of BAAO Barker Architecture Office used deep colours and sculptural elements to define and maximise spaces, designing a home that met the needs of a social family of three.

Barker Architecture Office was inspired by the muted neutral colours found in stone for the additional colour palette, and chose to bring in soft curves wherever possible, which acted as a counterpoint to the traditional boxiness of brownstone buildings.

The details start from the front door, where a custom asymmetrical mirror echoes the arched door of the entryway, which is cloaked in a rich green paint from Farrow

& Ball. The curved transitions and textural details continue throughout the property from the front to the back. The soft curving furniture chosen by BAAO reflect the harder textural curves created by the marble, wood and plaster, building a unique, whimsical yet practical structure to the property.

Framing the view toward the kitchen and rear steel window wall is a deep fluted plaster arch with a bar area lit by vintage French smoked glass sconces. Soft mushroom shades were chosen for the kitchen, contrasting gently with the custom Calacatta vagli viola marble countertops and the pale oak dining table by Maiden Home.

The atmospheric media room, painted a rich aubergine, is flanked by a marbled bar area lit by Volker Haug sconces.

The primary suite is painted a gentle lavender grey and features stained oak elements. Continuing the same colour scheme, the primary bathroom uses a mixture of soft lavender walls and a green onyx and rosa aurora macchia vecchia shower to produce a calming oasis. The freestanding bathtub is positioned to look out over the garden, and the stained oak vanity is covered with gleaming onyx.

INSPIRED BY THE NATURAL WORLD

STUDIO GANG USED THE SCIENCE OF THE NATURAL WORLD, INCLUDING BEEHIVES AND GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS TO PUSH BOUNDARIES AND EXPLORE WHAT A PUBLIC BUILDING COULD REALLY BE.

he latest addition to New York’s historic American Museum of Natural History, the Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation, completed in 2023, was intended to amplify the Museum’s intellectual impact and encourage scientific enthusiasm for the natural world. To do this, Chicago-based architects Studio Gang designed the building from the inside-out, looking to the natural world for inspiration.

Internally, the building appears to have been shaped by the flow of wind and water, creating an intriguing landscape to greet visitors. The atrium is open to daylight, allowing views through the building into different spaces. Jeanne Gang states, “the architecture taps into the desire for exploration and discovery that is so emblematic of science and also such a big part of being human. When you step into the Gilder Center, you immediately feel

a sense of wonder. You can glimpse the different exhibits and see how to move between them. The building invites you on a journey toward deeper understanding, sparking your curiosity and helping you find the amazing organisms and knowledge inside.”

The building’s walls were created by spraying structural concrete directly onto custom-bent rebar cages. By doing this, the interior achieves a visual look that is seamless and spatially continuous. Milford Pink Granite, the same stone used for the Museum’s entrance on Central Park West, clads the outside of the building, projecting a sense of continuity and cohesion. The building also greatly improves visitor experience and functionality, adding new accessible entrances and creating over thirty connections between ten different buildings, generating paths that form continuous loops.

WHEN OPPOSITES ATTRACT

A modern marvel by the Harbor and a Disney-Inspired ‘Castle’ in Orlando bring a new lease of life to Floridian homes.

Diverging from their established aesthetics, architect Phil Kean introduces two Florida neighbourhoods to a new style of home.

One mid-century modern-inspired house stands out in its traditional Floridian coastal neighbourhood. Its elegant composition of solid and transparent planes and seamlessly blended interior and exterior living spaces take full advantage of the home’s location by the Snell Island Harbour in St. Petersburg, Florida. As the 4,304-square-foot home’s design required an elevation of five feet from the ground to meet local codes, access to the home’s entrance was creatively arranged as a series of steps leading to a serene courtyard with a reflecting pool. As one approaches the front door, the glass entrance offers captivating views of the water, effortlessly blending the home’s modern lines with the scenic natural environment.

Upon stepping inside, panoramic waterfront vistas come into view. Expansive sliding glass doors blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, effortlessly integrating the spacious lanai and pool deck with the great room, doubling entertainment space. For moments of tranquillity, the primary bedroom’s adjoining sitting area opens onto the lanai, where a whirlpool and fireplace beckon, offering a serene waterfront retreat. Here, amidst the gentle lull of the waves, residents can unwind and immerse themselves in the captivating allure of coastal living.

its residents and community with its blend of island and resort casual. Inspired by the magic of Disney, architect Phil Kean, created this whimsical island-style “Castle” influenced by Spanish, Bermudian, and Alys Beach architecture.

Designed for a pie-shaped lot, the 7,367-square-foot courtyard vacation home wraps around a triangular-shaped pool to create privacy. This layout allows for pool views from almost every room, including the home’s rooftop terrace where the homeowners can enjoy Disney World’s nightly fireworks. Kean recalls, “When planning this home, the gazebo floating over the pool and the ‘fireworks viewing’ terrace were my favourite spaces. I began referring to this residence as ‘The Pearl’ when the giant glass sphere fountain by artist Allison Armour was installed at the entrance.”

I BEGAN REFERRING TO THIS RESIDENCE AS ‘THE PEARL’ WHEN THE GIANT GLASS SPHERE FOUNTAIN BY ARTIST ALLISON ARMOUR WAS INSTALLED AT THE ENTRANCE

The homeowners adore the Alys Beach-inspired design and are delighted their home is the only home in the community with a coastal design. They also enjoy the relaxed luxury interior design, provided by Phil’s interior design team, which provides comfortable living for the homeowners and their guests.

“We think it’s quite magical, especially the triangular-shaped pool with the cabana and the outdoor living room,” says the homeowner. “The home’s design gives us a feeling of being on vacation every day. We are thrilled to call this extraordinary place our home away from home.”

A MODERN

Classic

THIS TRANQUIL RETREAT IN THE CONNECTICUT HILLSIDE WAS DESIGNED FOR ITS GUESTS TO MAKE LIFE-LONG MEMORIES.

This charming swimming pool, pool house and surrounding gardens, designed by Haver & Skolnick Architects, is located on a scenic 70-acre farm in Washington, Connecticut.

Serving as a weekend retreat for a New York couple and their four children, the project is designed to emphasise social experiences whilst retaining the tranquillity of the property’s amazing views.

Inspired by the surrounding historic barns of the area, the project brings a modern touch to the classic New England ‘salt box’ design. The building is designed to blur the lines between interior and exterior, with fully retractable glass panels facing the pool and the bluestone terrace paving extending into the building. The rear of the building features a copper-clad dormer topped by a series of chimney pots, effectively concealing the building’s mechanical vents and flues.

The pool house interior has symmetric features that emphasise a porch-like lounge with seating cosily clustered around a fireplace. The simple, elegant materials of bleached pine boards and natural-cleft New York bluestone flooring are contrasted by playful light fixtures and lively fabrics.

The calming palette of blue and white complements the swimming pool to create a spa-like atmosphere. Accenting the soft tones is the rustic bronze hardware

and the jute and wool carpet in the lounge. A doublesided central fireplace allows the building to be used even into the cooler months.

The pool and terrace reflect the elegant, clean geometry of the pool house, while the surrounding planting beds create a lively contrast, providing privacy in the form of tall grasses and inspiring a resort-like atmosphere.

A SERENE SANCTUARY

Calming neutral colours and treasured family keepsakes create the soul of this inviting family home.

This 5,157 square-foot new build was built for a Nashville-based music manager with a growing family of grandchildren. Having a previous home in Alys Beach, the family outgrew it and wanted something to better fit the needs of their expanding family.

The home features four bedrooms, four and a half baths, a plunge pool perfect for indoor-outdoor living, two garages, a covered porch and a second-level pergola.

Brad, of Brad Ramsey Interiors, stuck with a neutral colour palette of soft whites and clean, modern lines, taking cues from nature while blending existing items of the family’s African tribal collection; one-of-a-kind collectables from family vacations. The living room features a shellstone fireplace, white coffered ceilings, a

custom carved Saladino furniture, round wooden table by Four Hands, and additional Palecek seating. To create a sense of warmth, Brad used textural Mark Alexander wallpaper in the powder bathroom. The room also features a floating Calacatta marble vanity. In the kitchen, the cabinetry and ceiling planks were whitewashed to give the room a clean and warm vibe, pairing beautifully with the warm oak accents of the island base and kitchen door.

Upstairs, the second-story stairwell features a striking black iron and alabaster pendent by Ralph Lauren, which pairs graciously with the natural oak stair rails.

Finally, designed as a retreat for the owners, the primary bedroom employs a neutral colour palette to create a calming oasis.

FELICIA BUSHMAN & KRISTIN LOSEY

Co-Founders & Principal Interior Designers

Onyx & Oak Interiors

www.onyxandoakinteriordesign.com

alifornia-based interior designers Kristin Losey and Felicia Bushman of Onyx & Oak Interiors had their work cut for them after a fire devasted the Boulder, Colorado property on which they were weeks from finishing renovations.

The majority of the work needed to be re-done, but as luck would have it, damage to the drywall allowed for the discovery of the building’s original red brick walls, which fit perfectly alongside the bright and bold colours that that the client was calling for.

Luckily left unscathed by the fire, beautiful handpainted wallpaper lines the upstairs bedroom, and classic patterned fabrics are used to great effect throughout the home.

Kristin and Felicia chose antiques and vintageinspired furnishings for the project, inspired by the owners love of all things old and new, resulting

in a home that feels like a true sanctuary. In the kitchen, hand-painted blue and white tile mixes with the intricate parquet floors to fill the room with character, and the metallic elements from the gold light fixtures and custom copper hood bring warmth into the space.

Felicia states: “Our client gave us the freedom to think outside the box and loved seeing new and unexpected ideas. We wanted to be respectful of both the home’s architecture and historic charm and of its owner’s lifestyle and aesthetic.”

As part of this, Kristin and Felicia chose to centre the decorations around the owner’s personal art collection, which adorns every wall of the property, and draws out even further the personality of a home already bursting with character.

Seeking to preserve what they could of the original house, JHID redesigned the floorplan to better suit the family’s lifestyle and maximise the house’s potential.

A playful colour palette of bright yet earthy tones are reflected on the ground floor and repeated throughout the rest of the house. Oregon white oak floors in the upstairs living areas, combined with Douglas fir ceilings, walls and accents, hark back to the original 1970s feel of the

house. An abundance of varied natural wood tones and accents create a cosy but luxurious environment. The living areas upstairs were placed to maximise the stunning views towards the river. The landing leading off the custom staircase, designed for quiet relaxation, mirrors the river with serene blue tones, round edged Fred Rigby furniture, and art by Jinie Park, a local Portland artist.

Connected by a stunning two-way tiled fireplace, the kitchen and living room present co-ordinating colours and a custom tiled island with recurring wooden elements and ample storage. This warm wooden theme is followed into the dining room, which features a custom walnut chandelier. Wallpaper by William Morris and curtain fabric by Susan Deliss apply alternate patterns to complement each other and complete the room.

MAKING AN IMPACT

RYDHIMA BRAR DESCRIBES HOW SHE MATCHES HER UNIQUE STYLE TO HER CLIENTS’ PERSONALITIES SO THAT EVERY PROJECT IS COHESIVE AND CREATIVE.

ydhima Brar, Founder and Creative Director of Los Angeles-based R/terior Studio, believes that interior design should impact your life. Her style, developed throughout her life by her unique experiences and upbringing, can be characterised by bright, charming colours complemented by soft relaxing neutrals, exciting patterns and interesting textures that combine to form a space unlike any other.

Raised in Kuwait, Rydhima describes how she grew up surrounded by breathtaking architecture, which would spark her life-long love of design, before she moved to New York and later her current home of California, where she lives with her husband and daughter. Her style is set apart by her willingness to explore different avenues of design, looking to her own and her clients’ experiences for inspiration and refusing to shy away from bold choices and intense colour schemes.

Rydhima is still all about the practical, and ensures that her interiors have ample storage and are high on efficiency and practicality for her clients. This is even the case when it comes to the design decisions themselves, as she explains. The living room of one project, featuring an eye-catching 1970s style wallpaper, was one the client’s husband was less certain of. Rydhima described how she was able to compromise by installing removable wallpaper, so that the option didn’t have to be permanent in case he later changed his mind. The ability to build such steadfast relationships with her clients is one that Rydhima has honed over the years, and is necessary when it comes to designing homes that are so personal in their composition.

Her style, which is regal yet not old-fashioned and maximalist without being cluttered, uses strong colours to reflect the personalities of the clients and interesting elements such as lighting to provide balance and draw the eyeline up, emphasising high ceilings and making the space feel larger and more open.

The artworks chosen for her projects are a bit of fun – charismatic pieces that fuse nicely with the walls and furniture, which is chosen not just for its design potential but also for how well it will serve the space.

The final product, chic and electric, always accentuates the unique character of the home and the people in it, creating a property that is captivating in vision and feel.

WOLF WACKERof

For this dynamic project, Chicago-based interior designer Lauren Svenstrup, of Studio Sven, was brought on to design a home around one specific feature: the view.

LAUREN SVENSTRUP

Principal Designer

Studio Sven www.studiosven.com

This property featured floor-to-ceiling windows and a panoramic view of Chicago’s entire skyline but was otherwise a white box. As Lauren describes, “it was a solo pad for a bachelor who was in desperate need of some colour and whimsy to express their fashionforward, artistic side.”

Looking to build a seamless transition from the outdoors that would blur the lines between where the views stop and the space begins, Lauren placed the ceiling as the primary focus. Local artist Erin Murphy was conscripted to hand-paint an abstract mural that spanned the entire unit ceiling.

The walls blend in as a soft sky blue and silver leaf finish was added to the corner support column to allow it to effortlessly disappear into the view. To provide some necessary complementary colours to the space, jewel-toned furniture was added in the form of a salmon velvet sofa and green vellum coffee table. To meet the client’s ‘work from home’ needs, Lauren used lacquered black in the foyer, leading into a light-driven living room, a dramatic Frank Lloyd Wright-

inspired contrast that creates an effective division between work and play.

In the bedroom, some light-hearted, feminineleaning elements were added to provide some distinction against black metal accents and the chocolate velvet upholstery. The homeowner expressed particular intrigue for shapes and artistic pieces, even in furniture, so triangular chairs were selected for the dining room, along with a mismatched pendant chandelier and rounded banquette.

Lauren describes that they drew much of their inspiration from one unexpected source – a Miss Aniela photograph ‘White Witch Awakening’. “The homeowner was very moved by it,” she explains, and the piece soon motivated the rest of the home’s mixed media collection, including sculptures, a Grecian-inspired tapestry, and the kitchen’s blue blocks installation by artist Brittany Sazonoff.

&COLOUR CANDOUR BETWEEN

A CHICAGO-BASED ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN

STUDIO

BREAKS DOWN THE WAYS OUR SPACES REFLECT OUR LIVES, EXPLORING THE INSPIRATION OUR RAISON D’ÊTRE LENDS TO OUR DESIGN CHOICES.

En Masse Architecture & Design had to approach these two projects very differently, in ways that allowed them and their clients to explore the projects’ full potentials. Of the two projects featured, known colloquially by the En Masse team as ‘Wayne’ and ‘Ricci’, the divergence in style came from the separate clients’ drastically different wishes for their properties.

For Wayne, the clients decided to emphasise the lakeside landscape as the property’s main feature, keeping the project itself as a neutral backdrop to the natural beauty around it. However, the opposite was true for the clients of project Ricci – they chose to let their space reflect their personalities, deciding on maximalist decorations and bright colours to celebrate their joie de vivre.

The En Masse team took these remarkedly contrasting desires in stride, and succeeded in creating two distinct properties that despite their differences, still display the complementary chic style that is the foundation of En Masse’s work.

When the clients of project Wayne approached Lucas Goldbach and the rest of the En Masse team

to redesign their lakefront property, they were motivated by the memories they wanted to make along the shoreline. With this in mind, the En Masse team chose a neutral, organic and textured palette of materials to let the landscape itself create a ‘natural mural’ and allowing the space to speak for itself.

Wanting to use this property as their second home, the clients dreamed about having a full house of guests and lingering over cocktails while the sun set, so a central and prominent dining room was a must. A custom dining table with shaker-inspired chairs, impervious to wet swimsuits and sandy feet, takes pride of place, enhancing the lakeside ambiance. A very functional kitchen, complete with scullery and breakfast nook was necessary for the clients to accommodate both their guests and their own children and the fabrics used throughout the property were deliberately chosen by En Masse to be special but not too precious, on the client’s wish that their guests should feel able to put their feet up without worry.

Despite the substantial neutrality, areas of contrast peek out among the neutral colour scheme, with the dark green pantry making its presence known

alongside the inky grey-blue lower-level lounge, pine-inspired main bedroom and black powder room, the stimulus for which came from the property’s adjacent meadow filled with wildflowers. For the primary bedroom, the client wanted the bed to have a view of both sides of the lake, so a custom bed was crafted and placed in the centre of the room. And as with other parts of the home, the tones in the bedrooms and bathrooms are light, natural and pulled from the view.

Lucas states, “Second homes are an opportunity to try something new, experience a different lifestyle, and lean into a sense of fantasy and escapism. For our clients, this home epitomised those ideals. The ease that careful planning, and hardworking, high quality, natural materials can lend to a space cannot be understated. Designing a home is an immense privilege and creating a space for generations to enjoy is a lasting reminder of the value of good design.”

The clients of project Ricci decided it was time to redesign after their children moved out. They reached out to En Masse with the desire to reinvent their space to meet their new needs rather than downsize and be forced to leave behind all of the

Chicago Project, USA

Michigan Project, USA

DESIGNING A HOME IS AN IMMENSE PRIVILEGE AND CREATING A SPACE FOR GENERATIONS TO ENJOY IS A LASTING REMINDER OF THE VALUE OF GOOD DESIGN

precious memories they had made in the property. They made it clear that they wanted their new interior design to reflect their vibrant personalities. The En Masse team took this on board without hesitation. Without the kids at home, they removed a (now unessential) linen closet and converted it into a sauna adjacent to the home gym. They converted what used to be the son’s bedroom into a dressing room for one of the clients, who works in fashion and art.

The mixture of patterns used throughout the project reflect the clients’ passion for travel and their zest for life. The objects and furnishings used are a further example of a life well-lived, as they were collected abroad and through vintage sellers. They provide an effectively cosmopolitan vibe enhanced by the suiting-inspired wallcovering.

A 1920s deco-inspired design was used in the kitchen along with a high-contrast black and white colour scheme. En Masse replaced the breakfast room with a pantry and a now-unused homework area with a casual dining space.

Overall, the project uses a sophisticated yet maximalist approach, layering geometric, abstract, and floral patterns. The trim, profiles and wood floors create a more serious backdrop to more personal design details, so that throughout the home, exuberant colour and patterns is tempered with adherence to original details.

A hotel of grand proportions, dramatic in appearance but with a cosy, intimate feel, the landmark property has been lovingly restored to its former glory.

Maintaining the original concept’s striking features and presence throughout, complemented by thoughtful design, the property offers 84 keys –including 56 classic rooms and 28 one bedroom suites – with sweeping ocean views.

Rooms at The Georgian embrace the hotel’s Art Deco heritage, many with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica Pier, stretching out from Santa Catalina Island across to Malibu.

CULINARY CHARISMA

For Ethimo, the modus operandi has always been characterised by the creation of comfortable open-air spaces that set trends for quality outdoor living, in perfect empathy with nature and in line with new lifestyles.

This is the creative spirit behind ‘Phil’, a kitchen that simplifies the art of outdoor cooking. A new collaboration between Ethimo and Gordon Guillaumier, Phil sees a new element take shape, with an unconventional design that, thanks to its special ‘nomadic’ configuration, emphasises the concept of outdoor entertaining, providing an original way to personalise outdoor settings and to enjoy contemporary cooking in a creative, relaxed way.

With its elegant yet informal look, Phil is the result of careful reflection on outdoor living: whether it be a portico, patio, terrace, poolside or city balcony, it makes any setting, however small, easy to manage simply, functionally and quickly. Its constructive equilibria, like stability and sturdiness, are highlighted by its ‘soft’ unconventional design.

With Phil, Ethimo and Gordon Guillaumier provide a new kitchen experience, creating a versatile concept that is the perfect balance of freedom and formality, able to adapt to settings of different sizes and uses, and the natural choice for completing open-air spaces.

AN EVOLUTION OF IDENTITY

ore than ten years since the MB&F M.A.D.Gallery first opened its doors on Geneva’s Rue Verdaine in 2011, MB&F are launching a new interior design and architectural identity for its M.A.D.Galleries.

“I really wanted to elevate the gallery to be at the level of the art pieces,” Said MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser. “I wanted to bring a sense of dignity and importance to the artists.”

The galleries were originally created in 2011 in order to situate their Horological and Legacy Machines in appropriate context, and have since taken off and grown organically. In collaboration with Voltige Design & Architecture, a highly experienced team with offices in Geneva and Lausanne, MB&F have redefined their spaces, starting with their largest gallery, located in the famous Dubai Mall.

The fresh identity is also applied to the growing number of MB&F shop-in-shops at the brand’s retail partners around the world – such as the MB&F corner at PMT-The Hour Glass in Bangkok – as well as a new retail format dubbed ‘MB&F Lab’.

The visual marker of a giant reflective lens was used as the focal point for the new design, a theme mirrored by the domed display cases specially made for the MB&F Machines. The custom furniture acts as the third key element of the redesign, taking its inspiration from the furniture craftsmen of the 50s and 60s. The lighting was the last element noticed by visitors, but the most important.

Voltige installed a state-of-the-art system combining exhibition track lighting, allowing

surgical precision for the art pieces and ensuring that the atmosphere and light intensity are always right, no matter day or night.

Where the previous M.A.D.Gallery interior design could be slightly overwhelming, Voltige and MB&F have paid particular attention to creating a discovery path through the space, starting with the most impressive artworks and leading to the smaller, more affordable pieces at the rear. Each domain has its own clearly defined space, and MB&F has its own space at the centre of the gallery.
