European cabinetry and imported stone counters and vanity tops. Floors are of imported porcelain tiles in the kitchen and imported marble in the bathrooms to further exude the feeling of comfort and luxury. Due to the extreme warm weather conditions in Saudi Arabia, natural sunlight had to be considered carefully. Hence, the aim of the design was to allow maximum sunlight into the living spaces while limiting the amount of heat. R a 50 unit residential development that spans over two towers connected by a grand double height lobby. Located in a strategic position in the centre of Jeddah, the project is in a quiet residential street in an upcoming area of the city. While Jeddah has historically been developed to have either overly expensive high income areas or low to limited income areas, Lifestyle Developers has capitalised on the opportunity to set the benchmark in providing luxury standards of living at an affordable price for middle-income professionals. The goal of this 16,150m² project was to create a modern design adopting international living standards and practices in order to raise the standards of living in the community. On entering the building, you are surrounded by exotic marble, imported African teak and a
multitude of striking design features. Great attention has been paid to the minutest detail. There are ‘floating’ concrete steps over a reflection pool forming the water feature at the main entrance before you enter into a grand, double height lobby. The building has a ground floor plus five additional floors and a basement level for car parking. There are four penthouse villas with expansive roof terraces taking pride of place on top of the towers. Units range from 88.3-328m² with one, two or three bedroom lay outs. The properties feature open floor plans with refined urban interiors and provide a number of amenities for residents. These include a lobby and concierge, library, gym, nursery, mailroom and interior and exterior gardens. A S is a 140 unit residential development in the heart of Jeddah in Al Salama District. Perfectly positioned, this urban sanctuary is in close proximity to many points of interest within the city. The aim was to create a community within a community where owners could reap the benefit of properties that would appreciate in value over time. The project is separated between eight buildings and accessed through four individual double height entrance lobbies. It has a total built up area of 47,000m² and features an array of state-of-the-art facilities. One particular highlight is the outstanding sky garden that connects the buildings and forms a focal point of the design. This striking example of landscape architecture provides an aesthetically beautiful element to the building’s overall design. Diyar Al Salam also boasts the longest pool in Saudi Arabia. This vast 50 metre long reflecting pool is a fabulous asset to the development. Other
important amenities include a library, day care centre for children of all ages, male and female health clubs and a clubroom. Everything from its distinctive design to the meticulously planned apartments at Diyar Al Salam combine a forward thinking aesthetic with respect for traditional values. The symbol of a dove is a prevailing theme throughout the development, inspired by the nature of its name – Diyar Al Salam, or ‘Homes of Peace’. Custom designed art sculptures featuring the dove of peace have been incorporated along the façade to further emphasize the philosophy behind the development’s concept. From the moment of entry its striking lobby, residents are given a personal and friendly welcome. B since 1998, Badih and Kantar Architects is a young and innovative architecture and interior design firm with a diverse portfolio ranging from private residences, corporate spaces and retail venues to mixed-use developments, hospitality, landscape and urban design. Over the years, the multidisciplinary team has maintained the same vision in carefully delivering hundreds of quality projects with close attention to detail, personal interaction with clients and professional dependability. Today, BK Architects has grown to become a worldwide practice with more than 30 specialised professionals working on over 40 ongoing projects across 24 countries within five continents. The company has presented no less than three impressive, award-winning projects: Villa S, Sari Gardens and Al Zahra Residential Development.
Villa S spun out of a detailed brief requesting a versatile home for a Saudi extended family. Its intricate design exhibits an indoor-outdoor feel through multiple layers of transparencies and opacities via an extensive use of glass, wood and stone, yet without compromising the sensitivity of a conservative culture. In short, it is a modern villa that bears respect to Muslim traditions. Upon entering the property, guests are welcomed into a monumental entrance lobby, followed by a large banquet hall that incorporates a walk-in larder, utility room and a further lounge/dining area that opens on to a covered patio with additional seating and dining areas. Additionally, this banquet hall demarcates a separation between public-private and male-female realms while regulating movement between the two. A main reception hall lies to the right, serving as a formal lounge where male guests

can have refreshments, smoke and talk. As it is entered through a relatively narrow gallery, this hall creates a sense of depth and surprise. To the left, the family wing houses an intimate arrangement of galleries and rooms around small garden fill-ins. The latter wing is provided with an external separate access to maximize privacy for family members. Walkways leading to the family dining room or ladies’ Majlis are consequently obscured from the eyes of guests while granting views of a serene landscape. The upper floor is exclusively a family space with four bedrooms and a master chamber, each with its own suite and walk-in closets, in addition to a family lounge and a large outdoor terrace. The basement holds a 12-seat home theatre room, a play area and an indoor swimming pool, all opening towards a recessed outdoor patio, connecting them back to the external landscape. The contemporary architectural style of Villa S with its large glazed facades and steel
structures adds modernism and technology into the dwelling. This was achieved without sacrificing its residential feel or intimacy where needed while allowing views of a large, fluid landscape from all corners of the villa’s edifice. A Z D has been conceived as a new experience in the heart of the city of Jeddah. Ideally located, the project is at one of the major crossings between King Abdul Aziz and Al Baturji roads within a large district able to accommodate most urban facilities, from residential and commercial to religious entities and hospitals. The project was tailored to stand out as an exquisite semi-gated residential complex, targeting an exotic clientele of expats, high ranking corporate officers and managers. It also provides common as well as private facilities, commercial amenities and entertainment.

Divided into two main plots, long strips of narrowly attached residential units create a nonrepetitive composition of positive and negative blocks of solid sheets. The latter provide privacy and front buffering gardens, thus protecting the houses from being exposed to the main traffic. The client’s main target was to provide small families and expats with their daily needs, from privacy to relaxation as well as public interaction. A unique introverted landscape, easily accessible from all units provides a common gathering space for social interaction. The use of local stone cladding and ‘eco-friendly’ materials, the open vertical circulations and the abundance of greenery throughout all levels gave the design an overall appeal by ways of appearance and efficiency. Every residential unit was carefully designed to meet the strictly conformist social values of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, incorporating
the luxurious feel of grandeur into tight spaces. By balancing aesthetics and function, BK Architects strived to make everyday living an enjoyable venture. With a total of 116 furnished apartments, a multipurpose hall, an indoor gymnasium, a covered swimming pool, a kindergarten nursery, a covered parking space with an optional guardhouse as well as a 450m² showroom, Al Zahra Development offers a luxurious lifestyle amidst the city of Jeddah. S G was born out of an architectural competition and presented a challenge far more complex than simply arranging 24 modules of boutique offices and residences on one plot. With an ever-growing demand for real estate in Jeddah, a substantial new supply is naturally expected. Therefore, Sari Gardens stands within the growth corridor

of the city, occupying an elongated plot roughly measuring 280 x 80 metres with its longest edge running east to west along Sari Street. The main difficulty with the development was avoiding repetition of typical modules for although the latter ensures feasibility on one hand, it depreciates sales on the other. Hence, the elongated land plot was divided into segments where each features the same amount of typical units but with a different arrangement of façade elements. Yielding a rhythmic variety that breaks monotony and gives character, the whole tactic turned out to be both financially feasible and visually appealing. By recreating a versatile street façade with a modernist vision of loft-like villas on one side and a corporate strip on the other, Sari Gardens provides a small-scale social autonomy that is capable of future expansion. The street elevation’s silhouette spun off the traditional
cityscape of old Arabian urban conglomerates where the pretended chaos came to reintegrate the organic shaping of older cities, adding the subtle human aspect to the project. The use of white painted solid sheets was a response to the harsh natural weather of the region as well as to lowering the building toll for a more viable outcome. The combination of residences and offices created a balanced development where users can both relax and produce. Unlike other projects dedicated to either living or work, Sari Gardens offers a lively and sustainable environment where life and social activity continue after working hours. Ensuring the privacy of each unit, interior spaces are intimately arranged around open patios that provide natural daylight yet with no direct visual connection to the public realm, thus keeping an air of serenity and exclusivity.

, AAA is an architectural and urban design firm working on the design and execution of distinctive architectural works across Lebanon and beyond. The company’s designs are the result of the careful integration of the client’s aspirations, the project’s programmatic requirements, as well as the nature and character of the site, while insuring an uncompromised respect for the surrounding environment whether natural or built. AAA has won awards for two of its latest projects. The first is Holcom Headquarters in Nahr Beirut district, Lebanon. Situated next to the client’s former headquarters built in the 80s, this large plot of land was acquired in order to build a new upscale base for Holcom. It was to contain the numerous brands and societies that the client represents, such as Canon, Apple and Minolta, as well as a pharmaceutical warehouse.
The building serves many different functions, providing offices for different departments, storage areas for all the various brands, a warehouse and a large number of parking spaces. Its architecture is therefore best described as being directly related to the client’s needs in terms of function and operation. An inner courtyard has been incorporated to catch natural light and create purity for the working areas. Hence, inner facades are completely open and transparent while the outer façade facing the adjacent road has been given a multi-layered protective skin. By creating appropriate spaces and the maximum amount of flexibility and open spaces, the headquarters will be able to expand or house new products. Intended to be the flagship of Holcom, the new headquarters will be a real landmark in the urban fabric of Beirut. The interior design and facade consultant was Lombardini 22.

Immeuble Multilocataires
The second project Immeuble Multilocataires – Cyberparc is located in the new city of Sidi Abdellah in Algiers. Initiated in 2004 by the Algerian Ministry of Telecommunication & Technologies, it is part of an urban operation in the suburbs of Algiers that relates back to the centre through different academic and scientific fields. This hub is dedicated to informative technologies as well as communication through three different functions. These are education, research and the exchange between researchers and the industry. The urban planning of the new city was designed by AAA as well as the architectural design of its first project. The aim was to create appropriate, flexible and comfortable work and office spaces to encourage
the implementation of new firms and corporations. The development program consists of two separate entities: the Business Incubator for start-up companies and l’Hotel d’Entreprise for established firms linked through a large public space. The main idea behind the project was to create a centre of attraction that was distinct in its calm and tranquil environment. Two different units were created facing each other with a large circular area between them. This constitutes the main lobby that is constructed with glass and metal to focus on the view towards the ornamental lake. The whole project has been executed around this lake which serves to give the project more depth and also brings a source of freshness in the micro-climate specific to the project.

growing country and, to accommodate this growth, a new, sustainable and efficient way of transporting both people and freight around the country was needed. Established by Emiri decree in 2011, Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) was given the mandate to design and develop the country’s rail network and, after completion, to manage, operate, and maintain it. The Qatar Integrated Railway Project (QIRP) currently under development by the Qatar Railways Company, Qatar Rail comprises an integrated railway network, consisting of the four lines Doha Metro with approximately 100 stations, in addition to a Light Rail Transit network that will serve the residents of the new Lusail city by providing an environmentallyfriendly mode of transportation that will not only connect destinations within Lusail, but also to Doha by way of the Doha Metro. A long distance rail network, connecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Qatar in the
south and the Kingdom of Bahrain in the north of Qatar, will also supplement the Doha Metro system. The long distance rail network for passengers and freight will consist of a freight network as well as a high-speed passenger transport system. The Doha Metro network, the key component of the QIRP – with phase one planned to include around 37 stations and phase two, over 60 stations – will serve as the backbone of the public transport system in the Greater Doha Area (GDA). The full network is planned to comprise four lines connecting the GDA as well as Al Khor, and Al WakrahMesaeed communities located north and south of Doha respectively. The goal of the QIRP is to create a service which encourages the use of public transportation as a valid alternative to private transportation for the population of GDA. A key concept within the design of the Doha Metro network is one of creating varying scales

of identity for the user: network identity, line identity and station identity. Network identity reflects the overall QIRP brand using recurring design elements that will shape the architecture of the stations consistently throughout the network and will offer brand recognition with Doha’s urban fabric. Line identity is achieved by creating different atmospheres within the stations for the theme of each of the metro lines (Historic Line, Coastal Line, City Line and Education Line) through distinct wall and floor treatments, as well as through material applications that orient and guide travellers throughout their journey. These atmospheres will be further distinguished by olfactory and audio-visual elements that will leave a lasting impression on the passengers. Individual station identity is achieved by displaying features positioned at strategic points in different areas of each station. The content of these features is specific to each station and related to the local context and/or to the
line theme. By integrating curated content throughout the stations, the Metro Network will serve as a cultural vehicle for Doha. The architectural branding incorporates and integrates functional and technical aspects of the network and stations into a coherent architectural expression. Five major branding principles establish the design framework with the goal of making the Qatar Rail Doha Metro Network a world-class reference of public transportation. These are vaulted spaces – building upon elements found in regional architecture; oyster – reinterpreting the duality suggested by mother of pearl, contrasting a discreet exterior and a rich, vibrant interior; caravanserai – designated niches which generate social interaction; adaptability – providing flexibility and integration of design safeguards a future-proof and iconic architectural expression; and scales of identity – established to create a hierarchy between the network, line and station identity.

A I, in Dubai 1993, has built its interior design consultancy with a firm client base of top hotel and resort brands that extends far beyond Dubai and the Middle East. The Park Hyatt Zanzibar is idyllically located on the island of Zanzibar, off the East coast of Africa in the heart of Stone Town. The hotel features an eclectic mix with influences from Arabia, Persia, East Africa and India. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it was the responsibility of the designers to ensure the restoration works of the heritage buildings were done accurately and to ensure a seamless flow from the heritage buildings into the new wing. The challenge was to re-create or reinvent the old and traditional into a modern,
contemporary design. Within the new wing, 57 hotel guestrooms and six additional suites have been created. It also encompasses the library, bar, restaurant and impressive function room. The interiors feature high ceilings, large fans and cool marble floors providing an inviting welcome from the warm and humid conditions of Zanzibar. The selected furniture is evident of the island’s strong ties and influences from India and Arabia. Every aspect of the interior design has been carefully detailed, from the intricate ceilings to the carved doors and mirror frames, the colour palette reflects the beauty of the nature of the island, cool colours and ethnic fabrics provide the highlights to a tonal interior canvas.

This market leading concept is that of a student hotel, offering day-to-day functional living and a conducive studying environment in keeping with the aspirational needs of students. The Festival Edge project, in partnership with MidCity Properties, features an upmarket
design and superior finishes to provide an aesthetically pleasing environment in which students may live and study. Located in the vicinity of the University of Pretoria, the project included the demolition and reconstruction of an historic building incorporated into the modern building. This became a feature in front of the new 365-bed student development to retain part of the old Hatfield streetscape. The goal of Menlyn Learning Hub was to develop an iconic building which is a modern, bright and vibrant higher educational campus to cater for present day students’ needs as well as for those of future generations. Therefore the design had to be flexible and adaptable to keep up with changes in technology and the everdeveloping educational system. Ultimately the result is an iconic and energy efficient campus of approximately 34 000m² (in phases) able to accommodate up to 8,000 students throughout its contemporary and inspiring spaces.

Zeerah Properties, the developers, steered the process with STSG Project Managers while Archactive Architects International did the master design and AEK Design Nigeria, added its local touch to the synergy. Archactive Architects continues to excel in designing buildings that are both pleasing to users and a success for the developer. The inclusion of details that are part of the vernacular language of Lagos shows how they can adapt their design to enhance the skylines anywhere. The project consists of two blocks with a total of 52 apartments. Both blocks

I D was commissioned by Airtel to design and project manage the fit-out of a prototype design in its Express Plus shops across Africa. Owned and run by Airtel as opposed to being franschised, these shops are heavily focused on customer service. The client’s main and critical objective was to achieve a constant design and branding look and feel in the shops wherever each one was situated. Airtel Networks Kenya then awarded Diju with an additional 20 shops across the country. The brief was generally the same as for the larger project but the shops were smaller in size averaging about 50-70m² and the focus was mainly on the retail aspect of the business. Diju has subsequently won an award for Airtel Thika Road Mall (TRM) Express Plus Shop. Given that it is slighter larger than the others at 108m² and in an upmarket mall,
the client spent a little more on bulkheads, stainless steel skirting, lighting and shop fittings. Special features such as the abstract representation of the ‘swoosh’ on the Airtel logo could be fully exhibited. In addition, the large surface areas on the walls and above the bulkheads created an opportunity for more lifestyle images that would not only soften the space but draw customers into the shop. A well-lit shop with high ceilings and the dominance of Airtel’s corporate colours was critical. Unfortunately, the shop is not strategically located within the mall and therefore the strong use of branding was a good way to achieve visibility. The client opted to split the shop in half but planned to expand it once customer traffic and sales increased. The retail area was placed in the front section to enable customers to experience the devices displayed before approaching the customer service agent at the back.

J an architect and interior designer in addition to having her own studio for designing and manufacturing furniture. She was commissioned to design both the exterior and interiors of The Valley Side Villa in Lebanon’s beautiful Bekaa Valley. Its owner is a young businessman who enjoys travelling and gathering ideas and artistic pieces from all over the world. In order to create something different to the surrounding villas, May Jbara established its design concept by matching the exterior and interior. By studying every minute detail, she ensured that they are well related and suit the client’s personality and lifestyle. Mixing classic with modern was a challenge bit achieved by the key word of ‘simplicity’.
Classic furniture with simple velvet fabrics were chosen, complemented by modern tiling and lighting. Elegant black wallpaper at the entrance lobby and a classic piano define the entrance and this design concept is carried through into the salon, dining and guest bathroom – all being given the same identity. A contemporary appearance featuring warm materials such as wood and neutral fabric colours for furniture, curtains and rugs with a touch of colour added in the cushions and accessories vitalized the living room, kitchen and bedrooms. All spaces are harmonious, relaxing, unique and functional resulting in a psychologically soothing environment that matches the client’s requirements for an elegant yet warm and comfortable living environment.

Ellington Group DT1 is a 20-storey tower in Dubai inspired by the client’s desire to design it from the inside out; focusing on market differentiating residential units wrapped in an elegant, understated façade. Perkins+Will developed a number of options to provide simple, orthogonal, cost effective plans providing the framework and opportunity for luxurious interior finishes. Its podium area accommodates a variety
of amenities while residential floors above include various bedroom types with fourbedroom penthouse at the uppermost floors, crowned by a rooftop garden with panoramic views. Diplomatic Quarter Hotel in Riyadh has been designed to encapsulate the rich heritage of the region, local materials, environment and culture in a modern expression. Its exterior is composed of layered strata that reflects the geology of the region, evoking the local landscape in a palette of stucco, timber and stainless steel. Inside, a guest’s journey through each space is structured as a journey through the local landscape. This culminates at their suite, where luxurious and understated bedrooms with accents of semiprecious stones recall the caverns that dot the region.

Over the years, the company has built an enviable reputation as a full service architectural practice - Toyota Kenya Academy is an award-winning example of its work. This automotive and human resources training centre had to be spacious, open and transparent to elevate thinking in line with the Toyota philosophy that ‘Good thoughts brings up Good Ideas’. The facility also needed to inculcate the Toyota Way and Spirit. The building comprises lecture and practical rooms (each with a capacity of 24-30), practical vehicle stalls, a waiting lounge, self-study room and paint booth among others.
The design was influenced by the architect’s desire to achieve a ‘cathedral of learning’ in a simple but interesting design that promotes Toyota’s philosophy of living and prospering with people, society and the globe. In order to accommodate the various functions, there was a need to define and separate areas that will be accessible to the public and those restricted to staff. Hence the design resulted in two levels with the ground floor training area for staff only. The upper level comprises lecture rooms and offices for executive training of regional professionals. The facility also includes a Kazien Dojo – a Japanese term that refers to a brainstorming room that is basic for all Toyota facilities around the world.

The company is one of Oman’s leading architecture and design consultancies with a reputation for creative and contemporary design solutions. D&A carried out all interior architecture works for a new headquarters building for Oman’s foremost petroleum production and exploration company, Petroleum Development Oman. The main objective was to create an environment that is comfortable and welcoming for all employees and visitors both local and international. This culminated in D&A creating the overall ‘Home & Away’ concept, a unique design feature applied across the interior, offering ‘home’ and ‘away’ havens
for all employees. The ‘home’ aspect is reflected in the overall open plan office environment, meetings rooms and shared facilities, and the ‘away’ areas are in the breakout rooms, individually styled to reflect the multicultural heritage of the staff while offering an escape for employees to recharge. Space was unified with an open plan office strategy, supporting communication, collaboration and connectivity. Coloured glass and carpeting, as well as a colour scheme on each floor, were carefully chosen to reinforce the company corporate identity. Meeting rooms and enclosed offices for management form the core along The Walk - a passageway linking work areas together while celebrating notable milestones on custom-made panels along the way. Designed by D&A, The Walk gives the project a certain distinctiveness. Not only is it practical and defines office traffic flow, but it also promotes staff pride and raises awareness in an eye-catching and unique way.

MR O A (AOA) is a private architectural firm. Established in 1980, the company now houses 42 highly qualified architects, designers, site engineers and support staff. Since its inception, AOA has handled several projects ranging from residential buildings, private houses and gated community developments to commercial and office space buildings and institutions. Many of its clients are also major investors who assigned the company for vast resort villages as well as exclusive hotels and several touristic projects and developments working with multi-national firms as co-architects.
AOA’s award-winning ‘bi5 food mood’ project was an endeavour to create a sustainable green environment throughout both the inside and out. The use of live green walls with subsoil irrigation on a geogrid system was applied not only in the atrium but also in the facades. AOA’s experimental prototype creates a living vertical structure with a multi-storey lush enclosure housing plentiful natural plantation in the central atrium. This attractive planting which flows on to the green roof top and the surrounding liveable landscape, entertains F&B guests as well as retailers.

The company is committed to providing aesthetically pleasing bespoke design and construction projects to meet the diverse needs of its clientele. Dutse International Airport in Dutse, Jigawa State, Nigeria is an award-winning example. The client’s brief was to provide a Nigerian category ‘A’ airport with the runway capable of carrying a critical aircraft of B747-400. It also had to allow for future expansion as the need arises. The primary aim was to create a gateway to Jigawa state which would facilitate a safe, fast and reliable transport system for people and a viable hub for perishable and nonperishable agricultural produce from Dutse.
The fundamental design of the airport was majorly influenced by the climatic, geophysical and cultural peculiarities of the project environment. There were many essential measures that had to be met including ease of access, proper separation and/or incorporation of functional components, while at the same time adhering strictly to international aviation standards. The overall layout of the chosen design represents the best optimisation of the available land area while allowing additional room for ongoing expansion. Facilities and components allow for more organised and effective flow of aircraft on the air side while the free flow of airport pedestrian traffic and baggage handling on the land side and in the terminal is also maximised.

The concept for Al Hamidieh Restaurant in EMAAR Boulevard, Dubai was inspired by Al Hamidieh Souk, the largest bazaar in the old city of Damascus. Meeting the client’s brief the 4,900 square foot Syrian cuisine restaurant embraces a traditional atmosphere with the addition of modern ambiance. Patterned metal sheets forming arches, Jupiter temple columns, black basalt floors, rustic wood and a warm
and inviting colour scheme all make the space resemble the traditional alleys of the oldest continually habited capital in the world. Openings between the archways allow continuous walking flow through the space and refer to the original arches that allowed light to enter the souk. The furniture is designed to be a combination between rustic wood and traditional, vibrant Brokar fabric. All design elements from the wooden ceiling at the restaurant’s entrance to the stone columns and carefully selected lighting units give a true feeling of an ancient bazaar. Yet it is one that has been reinvented in the 21st century to incorporate the very best of modern influences.

for sustainable development was established in Beirut, Lebanon in 1998. Its main aim is to develop architecture that is environmentally responsible, culturally relevant and inspired by its context. The context for company’s award-winning project Under the Pine Trees is a beautiful old pine forest overlooking the capital city of Beirut. The clients are a typical Lebanese family with grown up children that work abroad but visit in summer with their own families. The children’s most treasured memories were of the time they spent playing freely in nature. Hence they wanted their offspring to enjoy the same kind of experience. Almimariya’s main concern was to preserve the pine forest not just in area but in
scale. The house was therefore sunken into the terrain, utilising the natural slope of the land to absorb its volume. The majority of the site was left as natural forest with simple walkways cleared within it. The ground floor consists of the client’s apartment of 350m², to be used all year long, with all additional 370m² of family accommodation located on the lower ground floor with a separate entrance. Every room has a stunning view of Beirut and the main living spaces open on to terraces and the surrounding forest. Clad in local stone, the house is ingrained into its natural location in form, lifestyle and architectural language. The architect was Hana Alamuddin, landscape consultant Dr Jala Makhzoumi and structural engineer Dr Adel Qadi.

A is an award winning architecture firm based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Their portfolio includes a diverse range of projects with a strong focus on engaging and dynamic large scale public architecture. Afritects, in a joint venture with LPA Architects and Sharon Nicolaci Interior Designs, undertook the refurbishment and expansion of the Cresta Shopping Centre. The project brief called for the expansion and modernisation of the existing regional shopping centre in the suburbs of the Johannesburg Inner City. It was first developed in the 1970s and has since expanded to over 109,000m. The client wished to reposition the centre amidst newer retail developments in the region by upgrading its facilities. Phase one included a full refurbishment of the mall
interiors, a new concept for the entrance designs and a retail bridgelink connection for the mall. The next phase includes the exterior facade upgrade, a new foodcourt and upgrades to Cresta’s busiest entrance. The design philosophy was to work with the existing structure by enhancing its architecture while contrasting its classical forms with modern lines and materials. This blend re-asserts the shopping centre amidst the new retail complexes whilst retaining its long history that continues to make it a major player. The interior now feels brighter and more spacious. Cresta’s new porcelain floor tiling, frameless glass balustrades and shopfronts, edited ceilings, lighting and wall claddings showcase the beauty of the existing structure and give it a contemporary feel.

The company’s award-winning interior design for MS - Katameya Heights is an excellent example within an upscale compound in New Cairo, Egypt. The clients were a couple who purchased an existing house overlooking a golf course with the goal of transforming it into their dream home. Coming from big families, they wanted it to fit their future family. Not only do they appreciate timeless beauty, they also are innovative and practical. TDF Architects aimed to create an interior space that captures luxury and fine details. Transforming the existing house into a comfortable yet rich space was
challenging financially and architecturally. The main feature of the project is its paneling details. These have been incorporated with the study of architectural heights and volumes and accentuated by linear architectural lighting aligned with the relationship of materials in three main focal areas; entrance staircase, fireplace zone and front façade. The location of the project inspired its concept while the need to capture the essence of nature led the design team working on this project to frame its natural surroundings. The beauty of nature is timeless; yet ever evolving. Hence, the concept of the project was developed around the inspiration that flows from nature. The client’s forward thinking character also inspired TDF Architects to adopt an advanced architectural manner that abstracts nature in a modern form.

Jeddah Falcon mixed use development’s design was influenced by being on a prime sea front site. The concept was created to introduce a true landmark for the Red Sea and inspired by the shape of a falcon, as its name suggests, with its head and wings spread out. An iconic pedestrian bridge connects the podium level to the waterside, forming a great feature and leading to what will be a future marina and private floating clubhouse.
Pedestrian Bridges comprise nine initial structures located in and around Abu Dhabi to enhance the notion of a pedestrian oriented city. The aim was to reduce traffic accidents by encouraging pedestrians to use bridges safely. The design depicted two themes: the first reflecting the traditional Mashrabiah, the other a modern one implementing revolving louvres. All bridges have two elevators, generous night lighting and shading to reduce sun exposure. SinoGulf Residential Tower - ADNEC called for an efficient, value for money development of one, two and three-bedroom units. The aim was to introduce quality living at one of the newly developed centres of Abu Dhabi City. The design theme was influenced by the heritage of the UAE depicted from bamboo stems interlocking togther and forming facades. The building also provides a swimming pool and common facilities for residents’ use.

D in 2004 by Cariane Kapswarah-Hoffie, Insignia Design Consulting caters for the individual needs of a sophisticated clientele from the UAE and Europe. Cariane’s design signature of luxury, glam and sparkle is a fusion of classic elegance and modern contemporary. The award-winning Private Penthouse at Le Reve Tower – Dubai is in the heart of the Dubai Marina district. Within one of the area’s most prestigious buildings, the apartment has a panoramic sea view and an ideal setting. The client’s brief was to transform it into an elegant home able to serve multiple purposes. First and foremost it was to be a family home; secondly it needed to be suitable for entertaining friends; and thirdly it had to host official functions.
Merging rooms, enlarging passages and arches created airy spaces while replacing balcony doors with full height sliding sky windows gave an outdoor feeling to an indoor space. Soft shapes and light colours were chosen to allow meticulous design features to stand out. The wave-shaped crystal chandelier installation with its complementing room divider and the cut-to-size statuario marble are excellent examples. Custommade furniture optimises the space while the addition of a bubble-shaped seawater aquarium in the children’s playroom add life to the inland facing side of the apartment. These and many other elements unite the inspiration of the sea and the varied requirements of a family.

The company has won a total of four awards for the following projects. Al Saif is a residence in Kuwait designed for a lawyer, his wife and sons as well as his elder siblings with whom he shares the inheritance of the plot. The design brief was to create a house with a unique, distinctive and contemporary expression while maintaining a symmetrical planning principle. The concept evolved into two units within the same structure while the interior design forms an integral part of its architectural design. Dynamic scenes are contained by the two solid walls to focus on the play of the residents’ movements and the circulation elements within the open linking space/void.
A dramatic atmosphere is brought by the interplay of sunlight, the colours and textures of the materials, and the shades and nuance of the details. Naseeb Maritime company in Kuwait is the headquarters of an established firm providing services for cargo ships. The client wished to reflect his passion for the sea and ships to represent the company’s heritage and core operations within the building’s exterior and interior design. The resultant structure is shaped by interlocking volumes and surfaces that hover over a transparent and open base, mimicking the abstract formation of a traditional wooden sailing boat – the Kuwaiti dhow. Several elements were incorporated from a ship’s design to serve both functional and ornamental purposes within its interior such as sail fabric, ropes, wooden stairs and steel poles.

The overall design takes its inspiration from a contemporary interpretation of an oil painting called ‘Land of the Nile Confluence’ by the Sudanese artist Waleed Warrag. It focuses on reflecting contemporary art, design and culture with dynamic lines that merge
into the surrounding landscape. A market and show kitchen enhances the dining experience for clients, while an ice cream parlour adds an air of luxury. Environmental concerns and sustainability were foremost in the design, with creative solutions that take full advantage of the stunning views to the River Nile. The Blue Nile Residence is a private contract to create a new home on a large riverside plot which had previously held two properties. The brief was to create a sophisticated and modern aesthetic for an active family while complementing the setting. The resulting property is a spacious, airy home with ample space for entertaining, together with separate staff quarters. Careful landscaping creates a lush green microclimate with areas for sports and outdoor activities.

L G is unusual in that it not only specifies and designs interiors, but also has its own inhouse manufacturing facilities to create full fitouts for large projects. The combination of expert designers, a specialist factory, and close collaboration with skilled subcontractors gives Draw Link Group some special advantages when it comes to projects such as the InterContinental Hotel & Hotel Apartments in Dubai Marina. This is a five star hotel encompassing two towers in the famed Bay Central project, constructed by Select Group, Dubai, UAE. The brief was to create a hotel for those who prefer to ‘live in’ rather than ‘stay at’ when travelling. The suites and apartments are intended to be similar to fully equipped homes, with design elements chosen for practicality as well as artistic value.
In contrast with the rooms themselves, the public areas of the hotel took inspiration from museums and galleries, with striking art installations peppered through the spaces. These include human figures and faces, together with a clutch of 8 bright red penguin sculptures in unexpected exterior locations to generate amusement and surprise. The signature installation is a seven metre tall geometric sculpture of intersecting stainless steel polygons in polished pink stainless steel. This iconic structure has become the symbol and heart of the hotel; the first thing to greet visitors as they arrive. These collections of art pieces are enhanced by Draw Link’s decision to cut out ceiling and wall sections of the building, bringing natural light into spaces that would otherwise be artificially lit.
