PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE

I would like to thank everyone who supported the state sale by consigning or purchasing an animal, and to those who volunteered their help during sale week. A special thanks to Sherri Danhof and Scott Stempfle for being co-chairs of the sale. It was great to be able to get back to a live sale again! Also thanks to Carl Mensen for chairing another successful calf raffle. The National Convention is fast approaching. The dates are June 27-July 1 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. HALL OF FAME AWARD Paul Stempfle, Maynard
When Hall of Fame winner, Paul Stempfle, was in 5th grade he was not necessarily interested in the dairy industry; as a matter of fact, a sow was purchased and by the time he was a senior in high school there was a total of 45 sows. In 1981 they purchased a silage bagger and did custom bagging for many years. After purchasing the bagger the opportunity to rent 45 cows and some land and a milking facility came available. In 1989 they were able to purchase the herd of 45 Holstein cows, a 30 cow stanchion barn and 150 acres of land. Over the next 7 years, the herd would triple in size. In 1994 love was in the air and he got married. One year later their firstborn, Scott was born. In 1996 a double 8 herringbone parlor was built and in 1998 a daughter, Jessica was born and added to their family. In 2001 another 40 acres were purchased and a 2,000 head hog finishing barn was built. 2004 brought the addition of a 200 cow free-stall barn. In 2007 plans for a new house were drawn up and in 2008 it was finished, not bad for a “double-wide trailer” as he referred to it. In 2013 a calf barn was constructed as well as a newly weaned calf shed. Like all things in life, change is inevitable so in 2015, son Scott decided he wanted to be part of the family operation. After many barn tours and countless hours of drawing blueprints, Paul and his family decided to expand again. In 2016 a new 200 cow addition was added to the existing barn which was converted to sand and a new dry cow facility and a double 16 parallel parlor replaced the old double 8. The year 2017 brought new and improved heifer facilities by adding a 200 head free stall barn as well as the privilege to host the state Holstein picnic and an open house to the public. Currently, the herd has 710 cows on test and 800 heifers and owns 800 acres of land. In 2018 Paul was elected to the state show committee and has been in charge of many aspects of the shows ranging from fundraising, choosing the yearly awards, lining up meals for the exhibitors, and not being afraid to take charge and get things done-all while still finding time to mix feed for the dairy in between. We all know that covid hit us in 2020, resulting in many fairs and shows being canceled. Minnesota State fair usually hosts the Midwest Fall National Holstein Show but with the fair canceled so was this show.. until it was decided that the “SHOW must go on”. Paul took charge of the show and it was a great success. Just recently in 2021, the National Holstein Association had his dairy and family featured on the Holstein America show on RFD-TV, which was quite a unique opportunity, said Stempfle. Paul has been a great supporter and promoter of the Iowa Holstein Association and we appreciate his time and dedication to helping our events. Congratulations, Paul and family.
MASTER BREEDER AWARD Rick Demmer, Peosta
Rick grew up on a family farm with eight siblings where everyone was expected to pitch in and help with chores and the food on the table was all produced on their farm. His parents moved to the current 160-acre farm in 1956 and the farm was comprised of pigs, chickens, and dairy cattle. As time went on their main focus became the dairy cattle while they managed a few other animals simply to feed their family. The children began showing in 4-H at the Dubuque County Fair in 1964. This same year when he was only 5 years old his father Leo decided to start Artificially Inseminating(AI) his herd which sparked an interest in genetics in some of the sons. In 1969 they bought a cow named Lilly, the first registered cow on the farm. To this day, Lilly stands to be one of the most influential cows in the herd, and to this day quite a few of the herd traces back to her. Soon he was old enough to start working with the cattle and showing and he developed a great love for the Holstein breed over the years. He was active in showing Holsteins in 4-H, FFA, and at the district and state levels. After graduating from high school he worked alongside his dad on the family farm. In 1983 he purchased his first registered Holstein cow, Mapleglen Say Fond Elevation EX-91-2E. She became a strong foundation cow in the herd and later developed as a 5E-94 DOM with over 225,000 pounds of milk and 9,989 pounds of fat. She was named all Iowa 100,000-Pound Cow. She was flushed numerous times with resulting daughters by Conductor, Valiant, Mark, Ned Boy, Beautician, Blackstar and Starwalker. Her six Valiant daughters averaged 86 pts. and all over 1,000 pounds of fat. In 1985 he married his wife Kathy, and they rented a home a few miles from the home farm. They went on shares with his parents in 1988 and in 1990 moved onto the home farm and began cash-rent farming on their own until the purchase of the farm in 1998. With the signing of the papers that day they added on to the original barn and in turn, doubled their herd size over the next few years. Their focus continued to be developing deep pedigreed, high-quality cattle In 1991 his Senior Two-Year old Le-O-La Thor Linsey VG87 placed second at the Iowa Holstein Show. He received the Outstanding Young Holstein Breeder award in 1992. He is active in his community as a member of the Farm Bureau, Dubuque County Dairy Association, and a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Has hosted state Holstein picnics, Barn meetings, Youth fitting workshops, 4H judging workshops with the cattle, and 4-H dairy committee at the Dubuque County Fair. In 2020, Lauralee was the winning Junior 3-year Old and Intermediate Champion of the Midwest Fall National Holstein Show and the Iowa State Show. She also anchored the family’s Senior Best 3 females at both of these shows, where they took first place. His
first homebred All-American nomination came in 2020, Junior 3-Year-Old Le-O-La Arvis Lauralee (Ex91). While Lauralee may be their first Nomination from this family, she is not the only standout. Some of Le-O-La’s best brood cows and show prospects have come from this line of cattle. Le-O-La Talent Libby (EX 94 96-MS) is a two time All Iowa winner as a Junior 3 & 5-year-old, Le-O-La Atwood Leanne (EX 93) was the All Iowa Senior 2 and has thrown some pretty nice heifer calves as well, Le-O-La Atwood Lyndi (Ex 92) has been at the top of her classes since she was a Senior 2-Year-old; Le-O-La Raider Lady (EX 92) was the All Iowa Senior 2-Year-old and Reserve Grand Champion at the Iowa State Fair in 1995; and, Le-O-La Christmas Lilly (EX 90) was a Gold Medal Dam and the first place Aged Cow & Reserve Grand Champion at the Waterloo Cattle Congress in the early ’80s. This maternal line has been good to this breeder all because back in 1969 his dad purchased Oak-Valley Cedardale Lilly as a winter calf and the first registered Holstein to call Le-O-La home and one of the most influential cows for the family. Lauralee traces back 13 generations back to Lilly! This past show season the family has first and second Senior Best three females and without Lauralee in either group. At the 2021 World Dairy Expo Le-O-La Holsteins had Reserve Senior Best 3 of the Open Holstein show and Reserve All American Senior Best Three Females. At the most recent classification this past month the farm had 14 new Excellents and three 88pt 2-year-olds. Rick and Kathy are the parents of seven children, Kayla, Kristy, Kyle, Riley, Rachel, Royce and Regan. All the boys have Ag-related jobs and the girls are all past princesses.
Rick and Kathy Demmer received the Master Breeder Award from Linda Pagel. This award is given in memory of Russel Pagel.
Congratulations and good luck to Regan as the DJM finalists will be selected at the 2022 National Convention.

Iowa State University Dairy Science Student Profile
Name: Raegan Kime Hometown: Waucoma, Iowa High School: Turkey Valley Class Size: 20 Farm Name: K-Valley Farms Majors: Double major in Rural Policy & International Ag Why did you decide to attend ISU? Growing up in a rural area I really developed a passion for agriculture and what better place in Iowa to study agriculture than ISU. A big factor was the major itself as well. Agriculture and Rural Policy is a program unique to Iowa State and really defined what I was interested in for the future. Ames is the perfect distance of being not too close to home and also not being too far away. My mom also graduated from the Dairy Science program here and our family has really been Iowa State fans forever, so naturally, it seemed like the perfect place for me. What has been your most memorable college experience? The most memorable part so far has been the other students I have met and the friends I have made. Whether it was through joining clubs or talking to a stranger in the elevator, there are so many students from so many places. Having group friends that are from a couple of different states is really a new experience and has been so much fun this year. What has been your favorite course? My favorite course so far has been Sociology 230, Rural Society in Transition. This course mainly focused on why rural America is declining and how we can change that in the future. It was really interesting coming from a small town to share my view about the growing urban population and how this will affect our agriculture in the future. What are your future career goals? After Iowa State, I am very interested in working within the USDA or World Trade Organizations by advocating for American agriculture internationally by working with overseas trading and policy. After the USDA I would like to explore different career options within the U.S. Dairy Exports Council and advocate and market for the dairy industry internationally. Overseas exporting and lobbying is something I have become interested in and would like to pursue a career in.
Attention Juniors!
Summer Meeting - We will hold our summer meeting before the State Junior Show at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Watch for meeting announcement at the show. Junior Transfer Deadline - Just a reminder, starting with the 2022 show season, Holstein Association USA has changed the Junior transfer “received by” deadline to July 15 for both heifers and cows. In order to be eligible to participate in Junior Holstein Shows and qualify for Junior All-American honors, the animal must be registered in a youth’s name by July 15.

of the show. 8. For the Best Udder of Show, the judge will select one cow in each class, then the winner will be selected from that group. 9. The age break will be determined at the show. Previous winners are not eligible to compete. 11. The State Holstein Junior Advisory Committee reserves the final and absolute right to interpret these rules of the Iowa Junior Holstein Show and will arbitrarily settle and determine all matters, questions or differences in regard thereto arising out of or in connection with the junior show. Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy
The Iowa Holstein Association endorses the National Show Ring Policy and is the basis on which the Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy and its rules and regulations are formed. from the Holstein Association USA, Inc. Show Ring Policy The showing of Registered Holstein cattle is an important part of the promotion, merchandising and breeding program of many breeders. Additionally, it is an important part of Holstein Association USA to stimulate and sustain interest in breeding Registered Holstein cattle. This relates to both spectators and exhibitors. In this connection, the board of directors of Holstein Association USA believes it is in the best interest of the breeders of Registered Holstein cattle to maintain a reputation of integrity and to present a wholesome and progressive image of their cattle in the show ring. The Show Ring Policy provides for absolute responsibility for an animal’s condition by an owner, exhibitor, fitter or participant whether or not he or she was actually instrumental in or had actual knowledge of the treatment of the animal in violation of this Show Ring Policy. Dairy cattle exhibitors shall at all times deport themselves with honesty and good sportsmanship. It is recognized that there are certain practices in the proper care and management of dairy cattle which are necessary in the course of moving dairy cattle to and between shows that are advisable to keep them in a sound, healthy condition so they might be presented in the show ring in a natural, normal appearance and condition. At all times, Registered Holsteins shall be treated in a humane manner and in accordance with dairy quality assurance practices so as to protect the health, safety and welfare of the livestock and the consuming public. No person shall present for exhibition or exhibit an animal which he or she knows, or has reason to suspect, is affected with or has been exposed to a dangerously contagious or infectious disease, illness, or illegal or non-approved use of drugs, medication and/or prohibited substance, or residue. The position of Holstein Association USA, Inc. is that all animals presented for exhibition shall be in their natural conformation and structure, free of any alteration or modification by injection or internal or external administration of any substance or by involvement in unethical fitting. It is recognized that certain practices in the cataloging, handling and presentation of cattle in the show ring are unacceptable. THE FOLLOWING PRACTICES ARE A VIOLATION OF IOWA HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION SHOW RING POLICY 1. Misrepresenting the age and/or milking status of the animal for the class in which it is shown. 2. Treating the animal, particularly the udder, internally or externally: a. with and irritant or counter-irritant, b. using a device to artificially create or enhance the udder crease, i.e. “roping” c. using other substances that cause changes in the udder to artificially improve the conformation (allowable practices/substances include sealing and setting teats, icing of an udder will be allowed if ice is placed in a plastic bag) 3. Surgical or unethical insertion of any matter under the skin or into body cavities, performed to change the natural contour or appearance of the animal’s body, though not to preclude practices required or involved in normal management. Examples of violations are, but not limited to: a. administration of fluid via a stomach tube or other 12 June 2022 Iowa Holstein Herald
similar apparatus to fill the rumen. b. insertion of CIDRs or other devices or matter into a body cavity for the sole purpose of straightening an animal’s topline. 4. Balancing the udder by any means other than leaving naturally produced milk in any or all quarters 5. Administering epidural anesthesia (blocking tails) 6. Excessive manipulation of hair or use of false hair/ substitutes on an animal’s topline. Hair length is not to exceed 1.5 inches. 7. Animals should remain in public view while at a show. Animals taken off to a secluded area or to a cattle trailer will be deemed in violation of show ring ethics. 8. Physical or verbal abuse of show management or those assisting show management will be deemed a violation. MONITORING AND ENFORCEMENT PROCEDURES FOR IOWA HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION (IHA) SHOW RING POLICY District Shows 1. For district shows, the Iowa Holstein Association encourages the adoption of the IHA Show Ring Policy by show management. The show management should monitor any violations. The district board will receive any reports of violations and recommendations from the show management and determine if any penalties are warranted. State Shows held with the Iowa State Fair 1. The district that is to host the State Show should have the following responsibilities. When held at the Iowa State Fair, they should provide 5-6 people to work with the State Fair Superintendent to aid her/him in checking in cattle, working the show ring, clerking the show and enforcing the show ring code of ethics. The district is to provide the State Fair Superintendent with a list of names of the people aiding her/him. 2. When our State Show is held with the Iowa State Fair, any suspected violations should be reported in a timely matter to the State Fair Superintendent. The Iowa Holstein Association will follow the final decisions made by the Superintendent and follow the penalties laid out in the State Fairbook and by the State Fair Board. However the Iowa Holstein Association also reserves the right to impose any additional penalties on violators as they see necessary. State Shows not held with the Iowa State Fair 1. When hosting the State Show not held with the Iowa State Fair, the district is responsible for all management of the show including working with the Ethics Committee to enforce the IHA Show Ring Policy. 2. An Ethics Committee will be formed for the State Show. It shall consist of three people. One person will be from the IHA Show Committee and the other two will be from the host district. 3. The Ethics Committee will observe activities prior to and during the show and along with show management, receive complaints of alleged violations. 4. Any complaints of suspected violations must be made before the conclusion of the show. 5. The Ethics Committee or it’s designates has the authority to perform and review results of the following: a. An ultrasound examination of the udder prior to milk out b. Milk out of any individual cow c. Collection and testing of any of the animal’s body fluids d. medicines, or other preparations in any form, in possession or control of the exhibitor, fitter, agents or persons acting on behalf of the exhibitor. f. Animals may be checked for false hair on toplines and for length over 1.5 inches. 6. If it is suspected that a violation will occur if an animal is shown, the exhibitor will be informed by the Show Chairman or Ethics Committee, that showing of that animal will result in violation of Iowa Holstein Association Show Ring Policy. If the exhibitor decides not to show that animal, no violation will have occurred. 7. The owner is responsible for the representation of his/ her animals, regardless of who is caring for or fitting his/ her animals. 8. Within seven days of the conclusion of the show, the Ethics Committee must report to the IHA Show Committee Chairman. If any violations or suspected violations have occurred, they must be reported in writing to the IHA Show Committee. All findings and determinations of the Ethics Committee will be turned over to the IHA Show Committee. 9. The IHA Show Committee will have 21 days to review the Ethics Committee’s report and make a decision on any violations with a recommendation for disciplinary action against the accused exhibitor/individual. The IHA Show Committee will then make their recommendation to the IHA Executive Committee for final determination. 10. Upon receiving the Show Committee report of violations, the State President will notify the alleged violator of said report and share all supporting evidence with them. 11. The IHA Executive Committee after receiving the report of violations will have 30 days to meet and issue any penalties. The accused violator will be able to be present and speak at this meeting, as long as they notify the IHA Executive Committee of this intention 3 days prior to the meeting. 12. If the alleged violator is found in violation of the IHA Show Ring Policy, the Iowa Holstein Association Board of Directors may pass along the costs associated with the violations, enforcement and review of these violations. These costs must be paid in full by the violator or they will be considered “not in good standing” with the IHA and therefore be denied membership privileges. 13. The Iowa Holstein Association may consider previous violations of an exhibitor when making their decision on penalties. 14. An animal found in violation of the IHA Show Ring Policy will receive no premium monies, awards or placing. 15. During the monitoring and enforcement of the IHA Show Ring Policy, the Ethics Committee, Show Committee, and the Iowa Holstein Association will make all reasonable effort to maintain confidentiality, but no obligation of confidentiality shall exist for directors, staff or committees of the IHA. 16. Nicholas Ronald Dietz, 43 of Nashua, IA died Monday, February 7, 2022 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Nick Dietz was born on Feb. 11, 1978, to Ron and Dee Dietz in Waverly, and he grew up with his two siblings on the family’s farm southeast of Nashua. He received his education at schools in Nashua and attended Nashua-Plainfield High School, where he played football and was a member of the Class of 1996. Nick’s calling in life, though, was agriculture, for he was born with farming in his blood. At the age of 6 months old, he was at his mother’s hip when his parents did their daily chores. Nick’s passion and focus was the dairy cows until they were sold in 2018 when the focus changed to the crops and feeding holstein steers. Nick was a proud father to Maverick, who was always his number one priority. With all the work Nick had to do on the farm he always put Maverick first whether it was going fishing, playing chess, wrestling around on the floor, or helping Maverick show his animals at numerous fairs throughout the year. Just as importantly, Nick knew his job was to teach his son the importance of being responsible and of having a good work ethic. Nick loved to talk; his family members joked that he always had a phone to his ear, but in all seriousness, his life was farming, his family and talking with his friends, some of whom had been his pals for life, some of whom he just met. He was a man of a thousand questions, but the amazing thing is Nick could recall about any conversation with anyone he ever spoke with.

He had also found the true love of his life in his fiance, Vickie Demro, whose cousin and Nick had been friends for what seemed like forever. One day in 2014, Vickie went with her cousin to Nick’s farm, and a spark was lit. The two began dating in November 2014 and enjoyed their “quiet times” drinking coffee and watching the Farm Report, working together on the farm and taking drives to check out dairy farms near and far. Nick was also a great role model to Vickie’s two sons — Dawson and Tate. Nick was a member of the Iowa Holstein Association and International Holstein Association, but he made his mark in life on his farm and with the people he loved the most. His family and friends will miss his questions and the long talks they had with Nick. He is gone much too soon, yet at the same time, during the 43 years he graced this Earth, he left a lasting impact to those who knew and loved him. Nick is survived by his parents, Ronald and Dee Dietz of Nashua, IA; one son, Maverick Dietz of Nashua, IA; fiance, Vickie Demro and her sons, Dawson and Tate of Ionia, IA; one brother, Cass (Julie Harford) Dietz of Waterloo, IA; one sister, Julie (Rick) Johnson of Greendale, WI; four nieces, Riley, Asia, Bailee and Suri Johnson all of Greendale, WI. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Irven and Mary Dietz; maternal grandparents Harold and Helen Hicok.

We love deep-pedigreed cow families-our philosophy is to breed for type and feed for milk that’s perfect to make our Moore Family Farms mild cheddar cheese. We love cow families that last, that eat and that milk! Our January 2022 classiffjcation saw a 108 BAA- and we’re just getting started!
We opened our ffjrst shop in Maquoketa in 2017, as a way to add value to our milk and connect with consumers. We’ve come a long way from that ffjrst 500 square foot shop! We now have 2 locations, in Maquoketa and Beg̃evue. Our fjagship location in Maquoketa features 4,600 square foot of retail space, a creamery, a custom meat locker (with immediate openings), and thousands of made-in-themidwest products!
