Iowa Holstein Princess

Seasons Greetings! It is crazy that we are closing in on another very crazy and eventful year! I hope that all of you had a plentiful harvest. The past few months have been a little slower for me as princess. But as I sit back and reflect on the summer we had, I am very grateful to serve all of you. Once again, I would like to congratulate all of you on the success of the summer and fall shows. The quality of the Holstein cattle at all of these shows was unbelievable. This year, I was fortunate to attend the World Dairy Expo. All exhibitors from Iowa did exceptionally well and you should all be very proud of your hard work and dedication to this industry. With that being said, I would like to challenge all of you to take a few minutes to appreciate whatever accomplishments you have had within the past year, big or small. As we move into the holidays, it only gets busier. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and even better new year. Be grateful for the season and take time to spend with family and friends. Stay healthy and safe, and be sure to eat lots of delicious foods! As always, do not hesitate to reach out to me with any promotion ideas, questions, or concerns. My phone number is 563387-7636. Wishing you all a happy and blessed holiday season! Brooke Courtney

Iowa State University Dairy Science Student Profile

Name: Faith Palmer Hometown: Waukon, Iowa High School: Waukon High School Class Size: 85 Farm Name: Prairie Star Farm Major: Dairy Science, Minor in Business

Why did you decide to attend ISU? I chose to attend Iowa State because they have an excellent Agriculture and Dairy Science program that has many years of experience. Iowa State has evolved and improved over time to ensure students have many opportunities available. I also appreciate the involvement of the Dairy Science Club and the chance to meet other people who are passionate about the dairy community like myself. What has been your most memorable college experience? My most memorable experience has been with the Dairy Science Club helping with Youth Dairy Coalition this past spring. I have been attending this coalition since I was very young. Youth Dairy Coalition helped me decide that I wanted to go to Iowa State as well. I am thankful for those I’ve met through this activity over the years and was excited to help other young dairy enthusiasts have fun learning about the dairy industry and Dairy Science Club while connecting with others. What has been your favorite course? AN S 235, Dairy Cattle Science, has been my favorite course so far, because even though I grew up on a dairy farm, there are always new things to be learned and applied related to dairy farming. Things are always changing and evolving; therefore, I am looking forward to applying the things I learn in class on our farm back home. I also like that we are able to get out on the ISU Dairy Farm during lab. What are your future career goals? After graduating college, my goal is to work within the dairy industry. I would be happy working with dairy automation systems, such as robotics, or with farmers regarding nutrition or genetics. Ultimately, I would love to be working in production agriculture on a dairy farm. I enjoy working with cows, calf care, reproduction, genetics, nutrition, and growing crops; dairy farming includes all of these on a daily basis!

You’re looking at the 2021 National Holstein Convention’s 2nd Place Junior Quiz Bowl Team. They needed to win twice against New York in the finals. 2022 IHA Auxiliary Silent Auction

The Iowa Holstein Auxiliary will have another Silent Auction at the 2022 Iowa Holstein Convention at Empty Nest in Waukon. To make this auction a success, we need to have as many items donated as possible. Start searching around so we can have a variety of items to sell.

How do I enter?  • Complete the Futurity Form in Excel available at www.iowaholsteins.org and email it to the Futurity secretary with appropriate fees by February 1, 2022. A pdf form will also be available online if you don’t have access to Excel. Eligible animals are those registered Holstein females born September 1, 2020 to August 31, 2021. The initial fee is low to encourage you to enter several calves. You can always drop payment at subsequent deadlines. What about heifers already entered? • Entries made last year for the 2022 and 2023 Futurities will need to be updated. The Futurity Secretary will mail your form to you. Simply make payments on those animals you wish to re-enter, crossing out any you wish to drop. These entries are also due February 1, 2022. What kind of calves should be entered? • Your show calves that are already halter broke. Is your calf bred to have a good udder? Enter her! • Your fancy calf, out of a good cow, that was just the wrong age for the calf class. Enter her! • Last summer's babies. They may show as first lactation 3-Year-Olds, but that just might be to their advantage. Enter them! • The calf you plan to sell in the Iowa Spring Sale. A $2 entry may reap bigger dividends at the sale. Enter that calf! • Any calf you might sell as a show calf or junior project calf. You pay the first entry and if the buyer wants to keep up the entries they may. It is the seller's responsibility to inform the buyer of the animal's eligibility, and the buyer's responsibility to submit subsequent fees. Attention Junior Members • To be eligible for JUNIOR BRED AND OWNED awards for future Futurities your name must be listed on the animal's registration paper as the BREEDER. The Challenge • During the next year, you are breeding your cows and heifers for calves that will be eligible for Futurities in 2025 and 2026. Think about the bulls you are using. Think about the cow that is the foundation. Can you breed the futurity winner? Great cows are usually no accident! Have a plan, carry it out and let us all evaluate the results. See you at the show!

Obituaries

Maynard John Lang, Lang, 95, Brooklyn, Iowa, passed away in his home on Sept. 24, 2021. Maynard was born north of Brooklyn in the home of his parents, Howie and Stella (Hendrickson) Lang. He was a lifelong member of the Madison Church of Christ, serving as a Sunday school teacher and Elder. He attended a one room schoolhouse across the road from the church and decided to attend Grinnell High School instead of Brooklyn, as his three older sisters and brother had, because it had a vocational agriculture class. He graduated salutatorian of his class in 1943. He married Dorothy Charlotte Beem on June 1, 1948, and started farming her grandfather’s farm south of Brooklyn and farmed there throughout his life. They were the parents of four children, John Howie (Nancy Springsteen) Lang, John’s friend Catherine Lamb, twins Craig Allen (Mary Lee Montgomery) Lang and Christine (Tom) Turpin and Eric Walter (Nicole Schlinger) Lang. Maynard was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years; his parents; his older sisters, Evelyn (Gilford) Moore and Irene (Daryl) Gallagher; and his older brother, Merle (Pat and Bonnie) Lang. He is survived by his four children; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; his two younger brothers. Jack Lang and Larry Lang; and sister-in-law, Bonnie Lang. Maynard served for many years as director or president of various Iowa dairy marketing and promotion organizations. He considered it an achievement to convince six other states to merge their dairy organizations into what is now “Midwest Dairy.” He overcame complications of what to do with the local board presidents and executives to create what is one of the largest and most successful organizations representing dairy farmers in the nation. He also served as President of the National Dairy Board. In earlier years, he served as Poweshiek County, Iowa, zoning chairman and chairman of a committee to consolidate the Brooklyn, Guernsey and Malcom School districts. He enjoyed playing his harmonica at church and for nursing home residents. As it became more difficult to get around, he kept busy mowing the very large lawns on the farm where he lived and died, just four days after an afternoon of mowing lawn. A private family committal was held with Joel Nielsen officiating. His ashes was interred next to his wife, Dorothy, and also at the dairy farm where he lived. 26 December 2021 Iowa Holstein Herald
