President’s Perspective

As I write this article, I look at the past two years as president. It has been an honor to work with the great people of our association. I will be passing the responsibilities on to Walt Wessel and wish him the best of luck. I would also like to thank Jenna Chapman and Brianna Lucey, and Shellie Volker for all their support throughout the last two years. They have been great to work with.

Our state convention was held on February 25 at Promiseland Winery in Guttenberg. Congratulations to all the award winners and thanks to all that helped to organize this event.

Our state sale will be March 18th along with our calf raffle. Thanks to the farms that provided calves for this years raffle. If you haven’t already purchased your ticket yet, please do so from any state board member. The proceeds are used to help fund our adult and junior activities. Thank you to the consignors and all the volunteers that help make the state sale a success.

Our state show will be held in Manchester on August 1-2. Have a safe spring!

Maurice Keith Van Note was born August 19, 1935, in Cedar Rapids, the oldest of three boys born to Glenn and Lillian (Millburn) Van Note. He graduated from Palo Consolidated High School in 1952 and studied business at Coe College. After 3 years, he transferred to the University of Iowa (to avoid taking a foreign language class), attaining an accounting degree in 1968. Maurice married Pamela Corio on Feb. 19, 2000, at Hillside Wesleyan Church and they enjoyed 20 years of marriage prior to her passing in 2020. Early in his career, Maurice was an accountant for Wilson Meat Packing, where he tracked pickled pigs’ feet, but his love of all things farming soon lured him away. Through the years he spent countless hours establishing Vlieland Farms and the home of registered Holsteins with rolling cropland. His passion for farming extended to the classroom where he supported agricultural courses at Kirkwood Community College for future generations, as well as serving as a 4-H Leader for the Clinton Roughriders club. He was a 66-year member of both the Iowa Holstein Association and the Holstein Association USA, as well as a 43-year member of the US Southdown Association. Maurice was a faithful member of the Hillside Wesleyan Church where he enjoyed the fellowship of congregants, especially the Agape Sunday School class. He enjoyed farming, reading, keeping up with various sports teams, and listening to polka & gospel music. In his later years, he enjoyed recounting stories of years gone by with memories of farming with Belgian & Percheron horses in his early years, planting with the Super H Farmall, showing Holsteins at World Dairy Expo and building a farm from the ground up to raise dairy cows, sheep and a family rooted in agriculture. He is survived by his three children, Kristyn (Shaun) Yoder of Wellman, IA, Bryan (Adrien) Van Note of Moseley, VA and Lynette (Eric) Bossler of Van Horne, IA; 10 grandchildren, Alyssa, Mikaela, Cameron and Lincoln Yoder; Blake and Mackenzie Van Note; and Morgan, Dylan, Colton and Courtney Bossler. In addition to his immediate family, Maurice is also survived by Pam’s children and grandchildren. Preceding Maurice in death were his parents and two brothers, Wallace and Vernon Van Note.

2022 Iowa Holstein Princess

Greetings, Warm weather is on the way! Spring is almost here and with that comes the Iowa State Holstein Sale! Mark your calendars and plan to join Holstein breeders from across the state in West Union on March 18th. The junior members will be having a short meeting before the sale at 9:30, we will also be running the food stand and selling bars (junior families, this is your reminder to bring a dessert!) This is our biggest fundraiser so we appreciate all the support we can get. Young Holstein members gathered in Dyersville for two fun-filled days at the end of December, for the Iowa Junior Holstein Convention. We started off by putting our knowledge to the test to see which Juniors would represent Iowa at this year's National Holstein Convention, congratulations to those competitors! I then gave a short presentation on “How to make butter” everyone participated and enjoyed tasting their creation. We then held our annual meeting and elected new officers. After the business portion of the convention, we enjoyed playing games and hanging out with new and old friends! I look forward to seeing and meeting with everyone in a couple of weeks at the Iowa Adult Holstein Convention in Guttenburg! If you would like me to have a role at any event you know of or have planned, please request that I attend. I am eager to promote dairy products and interact with consumers. Phone: 563-637-2386

Top BAA Herds from 2022

The following summary represents the highest classified herds in Iowa for 2022. This list includes all herds that were classified in the calendar year of 2022 with ten or more cows and a BAA% of 105.0 or above. If the herd was classified more than once during the year, the most recent classification was used.

2022 Iowa Holstein Princess

Hello Iowa Holstein Members! As I am finishing out my time as one of your princesses I have so much to be thankful for. I am so thankful for all of you for letting me represent you and helping me at events I attended.

Thank you to my parents for letting me have this great opportunity and always being supportive of my role as your princess. I had an amazing time representing you this year. I had a blast at the Iowa State Fair and all the other shows handing out ribbons and talking to all of you about your cows and the association. Thank you to Naomi for being a co-princess with me. I was glad I didn’t have to take it on all alone!

After my time serving as your princess, I will continue to play an active role in our Iowa Junior Association. At our junior convention I was reelected as the treasurer of the junior association. I am also planning on going to Lexington, Kentucky for the National Junior Holstein Convention to compete in the Senior Dairy Bowl contest. I also will continue helping my mom at shows and the sale.

Yours Respectfully, Brynlee
