Without sounding cliché, when I sat down to write this note, I couldn’t help but think about how the journey is just as important—if not more—as the destination. While that mantra can be applied to every facet of our lives, I instantly thought about planning a wedding. (This is a wedding magazine, after all!) While the wedding day is the pièce de résistance, of course, the journey to get there—and the people you encounter—are pretty amazing, too. Cherish the moments spent tasting cakes with your crew, finding your dream gown with your nearest and dearest, bonding with a florist over a love of delphiniums or sharing a much-needed hug with your wedding planner on a stressful day. The love, care, meetings and minutes on the road to “I do” are truly something to be treasured. I feel a similar sentiment about this issue of Arizona Bride. The process of selecting gorgeous pictures, reliving local couples’ big days and working with brilliant creatives is just as fulfilling as flipping through the magazine with my own two hands for the first time— magic from start to finish. I hope you enjoy the journey through our Spring/Summer issue, from the exquisite décor in our editorial “Dream a Little Dream” (page 34) at Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Bungalows to whimsical cake displays in “Piece of Cake” (page 42) at The Dauz in Phoenix, and “Desert Drama” (page 50), which packs on desert charm and then some. Telawa Trail, Phoenix, AZ 85016 602-553-7383 | wrigleymansion.com Wrigley Mansion, a breathtaking landmark originally constructed in 1932 by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr., was thoughtfully designed as a 50th-anniversary gift to his beloved wife, Ada. Sitting at the top of a hill, the Mansion commands the most dramatic views in Phoenix, showcasing the mountains and the city below. Its architecture includes curated elements of Spanish, California Monterey, and Mediterranean styles. Original tiles still grace the Mansion, having been shipped from the Wrigley family’s tile factory on Catalina Island and carted up the hill by donkey. Once sold by the Wrigley family in 1973, it changed hands several times. In 1992, as the city of Phoenix was planning to tear it down to make room for condos, the late Geordie Hormel and his wife, Jamie, fell in love with the property and purchased it.

A Celebration of the Industry’s Finest
Wrigley Mansion was the perfect setting for Arizona Bride’s inaugural Best of 2023 Awards gala. The timeless event featured a black-and-white color palette, inspired by Chanel. Crisp white florals combined with the rich history of the venue. Guests were greeted with bubbly and the opportunity to take a photo in the step-in magazine photo booth. The space was adorned with elegant white florals and an installation featuring the fashion shoot from the new issue, while a violinist charmed the room. Guests moved into the Garden Room for the highly anticipated awards ceremony and wedding professionals across the industry were celebrated with applause. OUTDOOR OASIS “My inspiration for this shoot came from my own personal joy in returning back to the Valley,” says Kim Pestalozzi of Chère Rosalie. “I was visiting Boulders just to familiarize myself with the venues here in Arizona, and something just spoke to me about this space. It’s peaceful, historic and a true oasis.” An ode to warm days, unrivaled sunsets and the natural beauty of The Boulders Resort & Spa, the team at Chère Rosalie—along with photographer Ryann Lindsey—sought to honor and appreciate the tones of the desert while channeling subtle retro nostalgia. “I wanted to approach spring and summer in a different, less obvious way,” notes Pestalozzi of the color palette incorporating terracotta, fuchsia, peach, yellow and tangerine. “I wanted vibrancy but not in the typical spring and summer shades.” The ceremony space was perched atop the property’s majestic Promise Rock, where punchy floral arrangements highlighted the already-stunning natural backdrop. The zest of warmer seasons was captured on the reception tablescape, accented by elevated arrangements in terracotta planters at the base, playing up the organic feel of the rock formations in the background. Mixing patterns, shapes and textures with small bud vases, terracotta bowls and die-cut cactus place cards, Pestalozzi created a bold and tasteful layered look atop ikat linens, while pink candles and scattered citrus fruits added dimension and flavor to the table. Set against the majestic backdrop of Boulders, this styled shoot perfectly captured the elegant feeling of the summery outdoors.

Couples often find themselves at a loss about how to calculate the cost and which vendors should be tipped—and are dismayed to discover on the day of the wedding that their budget just increased. To prepare, think of situations where you would normally include a tip, such as a haircut or dinner out. So it stands to reason that these businesses also are on the list for a gratuity. Along with tipping your hair stylist and caterer, the pros suggest

EMILY IN PARIS Lead designer Jessica Moore knew she wanted to go colorful and dreamy when approaching her next wedding design, and that inspiration came from an unexpected place—the trending Netflix series “Emily in Paris.” “I loved the backdrop of the beautiful city and her big fashion statements,” Moore says. “I began thinking about what a wedding between Emily and Gabriel [the show’s two main characters] would look like, and this is what was created.” The elegant design at the Arizona Biltmore honored the “something blue” wedding tradition, incorporating subtle shades of the hue into the scheme in creative ways, from the pastel vintage Volkswagen getaway bug to variations of blue popping against the shimmery gold detail of the wedding cake. Exuding a distinctly Parisian air, the tablescape featured classic white and blue floral print linens, creating an eye-catching focal point for the reception space. Florals abounded in many forms, including intricate details on the bride’s velvet blue heels to the delicate illustration on the stationery, and the ranunculus, hydrangeas and roses in the lovely bridal bouquet.

Tucked away from the hustle of the bustling Scottsdale scene, the Andaz played host to a dreamy design ripe with bounding florals, soft textures and drool-worthy details. “In crafting this editorial feature, our goal was to create a refined and romantic vision for the modern bride,” said Paris Semple, owner of Events by Paris. And she and a team of talented pros accomplished just that. A breathtaking vision, the ceremony space centered around an altar installation incorporating white columns mixed within and elevating floral arrangements in creamy shades of peach and blue. Light wood wishbone chairs lined the aisle, imparting a sophisticated, mid-century modern vibe. Not to be outshined, all eyes were on the captivating bride—her look nothing short of breathtaking in Blue by Enzoani’s “Peggy” gown from Mariée Bridal, with a full skirt and asymmetrical shoulder draping. The only accessory needed was a free-flowing pastel bouquet resting over her arm.

An intimate reception setting at golden hour called for an outfit change: the “Vivienne” dress with a beautiful statement bow from Modern Bride. The tabletop evoked classic-meets-modern with patterned linens, brushed gold flatware, textured glassware and hurricanes with long tapers. Sprays of florals grew up from either side of the base of the table, continuing the color-blocking theme, blue on one side, blush on the other.

When baking a vision for this cake-centered editorial, Paige Robertson of Front Paige Events used her go-to conceptualizing method: bring a group together and watch everyone’s individual passion take off. “I am a collaborative creative,” she says. “I like to share the vision and watch it take shape. Doing this allowed the design to take form in beautiful ways.” The cake is often the centerpiece of the reception, but add an amazing presentation, and it can be spectacular. When approaching this design, that was top of mind for all, especially KC’s Florals, who worked with the cake masters and Robertson to create a world for each cake to shine. “From the beginning, all scenes had spatial design features—and spatial design moves the design beyond the table,” Robertson notes.
It was refreshing to showcase cake for a styled shoot. It’s not of ten cakes get the spotlight and feel they can be the centerpiece of a wedding reception. –Paige Robertson, Front Paige Events

GARDEN WHIMSY Honeybee Cake Co.’s (@honeybeecakeco) Candis Spivey says she “approached the cake as a blank canvas and let the color palette and technique lead,” resulting in a stunning hand-painted buttercream floral cake. Also a tribute to the spring season, her gluten-free vanilla cake was filled with whipped raspberry and topped with a subtle lemon buttercream frosting. Florals and fairytale components wove together to yield a magical display recalling Alice in Wonderland. Robertson adds, “The little touches hidden within the flowers brought amusement and romance.”

MODERN ROMANCE Armana Christianson of A. Cakes Bakery’s (@a.cakesbakery.az) fabulous five-tiered creation was wrapped in fondant with torn edges and decorated with stretched rice paper, sugar roses, floating wafer paper flowers and edible pearls. “I had this overwhelming feeling of flowing, whirlwind romance,” explains Christianson. “I wanted to create that in the form of cake.” As for the decadent flavor, she opted for almond cake with apricot jam filling covered in honey Swiss meringue buttercream. “With the romantic set, the asymmetrical drape matched the offset arrangement of the florals, and the gathering—as well as the color—of the drape perfectly matched the cake,” says Robertson. “It seemed as though the elements were extensions of one another.”

TAKE SHAPE Erica Bentson of Whisk & Paddle Bakeshop (@whiskandpaddle_az) went with a gorgeous three-tiered geometric cake featuring a decorative hexagonal spacer. The tiers were covered in marbled fondant with hand-painted gold veining, and hand-lettered love notes on wafer paper added a decorative touch. “I wanted to blend modern and romantic with the geometric and old feel of love letters,” says Bentson. “And I’m really into marbling right now.” As for the inside of the cake, it was just as intricate as the outside: a tangerine chiffon with whipped mascarpone tangerine curd. Robertson adds of the display, “The flowers hung down surrounding the cake that stood tall like a museum display.”

The Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix served as an enchanting oasis for a minimalist wedding scheme to thrive—from the fringed deep-V gown to design elements rich in textures, shapes and subtle colors. The result was chic, unforgettable and the ultimate study in refinement. Above, über-cool curves of the invitation suite’s type mimicked the curves of a certain desert creature, and elegant earrings followed suit in the same serpentine motif.

“We intentionally kept the flowers minimal … just the bouquet, pieces for each place setting, and the cake topper,” Wagner says. “All of the flowers were provided by the florist and sourced in Phoenix, with the majority of them being sourced directly from her family’s garden, most of which grow naturally in the desert.” Understated tableware and glassware were set off by edgy black placemats and floral napkins in a spiraling, metallic snake napkin ring.

The groom kept it casual, eschewing a necktie and donning a sand-toned suit and white shirt. Meanwhile, the bride’s makeup was subdued with just a touch of lip color and dramatic eye shadow. Wrigley Mansion, a breathtaking landmark originally constructed in 1932 by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr., was thoughtfully designed as a 50th-anniversary gift to his beloved wife, Ada. Sitting at the top of a hill, the Mansion commands the most dramatic views in Phoenix, showcasing the mountains and the city below. Its architecture includes curated elements of Spanish, California Monterey, and Mediterranean styles. Original tiles still grace the Mansion, having been shipped from the Wrigley family’s tile factory on Catalina Island and carted up the hill by donkey. Once sold by the Wrigley family in 1973, it changed hands several times. In 1992, as the city of Phoenix was planning to tear it down to make room for condos, the late Geordie Hormel and his wife, Jamie, fell in love with the property and purchased it. Jamie and Geordie’s intentions were to restore the home and share its inherent magic with everyone. Today, the Wrigley Mansion is considered a premier venue for fine dining and for the most special of celebrations.

Melanie Long and Luke Dietsch met in Florida, got engaged (and now live) in Minnesota, had the ring designed by a friend in New York and were married in a destination Scottsdale wedding. Their “chic modernist” event was festooned with dreamy cream and white blossoms, featuring the bride’s beloved dahlias, and the bridesmaids’ gowns added mixed pops of blue. The ceremony (officiated by Melanie’s brother) was touched by a moment of sweet serendipity when hummingbirds—symbolic of Luke’s late grandmother—stopped by during the service, with one flying over Luke’s family, then perching on a flower in the arch behind the couple as they exchanged vows. After saying their “I do’s,” Melanie donned a playful reception dress to kick up her heels. Little touches, including hand-written notes on the seating chart, personalized foam garnishes on the signature margaritas, a Champagne tower and cactus-shaped wine stoppers as favors, were delightful additions to the gathering. Enjoying scrumptious desserts from Nothing Bundt Cakes and surrounded by the glow of candlelight, guests danced the night away to the sounds of the Lucky Devils Band. —Sherri Hildebrandt

The natural splendor of Sedona’s statuesque peaks rose up to frame Matt and Allan’s black-tie wedding day. As the grooms donned matching robes to take morning-of pictures in their hotel room, guests readied themselves in tuxedos and gowns to celebrate in the alfresco space. Sleek, black tuxedos, Tom Ford accessories and ornate black-rose cufflinks produced stunningly coordinated wedding looks for both gentlemen. Family and friends hopped off the official wedding transport, a quaint trolley, and grabbed a drink at the outdoor bar on the ceremony lawn before finding their seats. White chairs faced the ceremony arch draped with lush greenery and backed by a layered Arizona mountain. Crisp white blooms lining the aisles stood out brightly against the verdure. The grooms proceeded down the aisle hand-in-hand and looked on as their nearest and dearest spoke before they said their vows. Guests then retreated to the cocktail hour space featuring mod black-and-white lounge furniture with contemporary lines— a designer’s dream. They sipped from Champagne flutes and nibbled on passed appetizers while the grooms took advantage of the desert’s particularly stunning brand of golden hour. Dinner was served on the patio; tables showcased elegant black linens and bouquets of white and deep-red blossoms flanked by greenery and ample candlelight. A fun configuration of beverages acted as the escort card display—each glass featured a name and table number on a tag hanging off the lip. The newlyweds and their guests boogied the night away in the interior dance space, Allan and Matt basking in each moment of revelry as a just-married couple. —Megan Simpson Teeter

Tammar Hirsch and Philip DeMarie sought to host an event befitting their upscale taste and the natural beauty of their desert backdrop. As elegant as the affair was, the heart of it all centered around the children of honor: Anabelle and Hudson. Together, the family members’ initials spell “PATH,” which acted as the codeword and overarching motif of the big day. Thrilled to bear witness to the ceremony, guests gathered in the venue’s courtyard in sight of towering mountains and greenery, all behind a chuppah bedecked with bunches of baby’s breath. The bride, sporting a stunning Pnina Tornai gown with layers of tulle, carried a bouquet of hot pink, blush, lavender and yellow blooms emulating a desert sunset. While the groom donned a dashing lavender suit with a striking orange boutonnière, the children wore light attire accented with warm floral accessories. Personal vows—incorporating the kids, of course—prompted a wave of happy tears throughout the space. Adjourning to the latter half of the celebration at the mansion, family and friends explored a garden space named after Anabelle and a swanky lounge vignette in Hudson’s name. Expansive dining tables lined with structured centerpieces showcasing the event’s vibrant florals included gold-rimmed glass plating and matching flatware sets for an extra regal touch. As the sun set on a perfect day, the newlyweds toasted their happiness with a slideshow of heart-warming family photos and shared old memories forever captured in their hearts. Mackenzie Shepard and Hunter Nielsen’s relationship withstood time—12 years, to be exact—and travel from West to East and back. They met in high school through a mutual friend, and when it came time to wed, “After years on the East Coast pursuing careers in medicine, we knew we had to return to the place that shaped us,” Mackenzie says. “The Paseo, nestled behind the Superstition Mountains, was the perfect venue—a breathtaking backdrop that held a special place in our hearts.” Their wedding was a mix of boho desert and effortless chic. Their color palette—tan, brown, beige, khaki and green with subtle splashes of pink—mirrored the desert. Bold arrangements of pampas grasses, roses, orchids and dried saw palmetto added textures, shapes and movement to the design. “It was about creating a vibe that reflected the awe-inspiring landscapes we grew up with,” Mackenzie says. “The goal was for our guests to not only witness the beauty of Arizona but to immerse themselves in it, to feel the warmth of the desert sun and the cool breeze of the evening.” Among details Mackenzie and Hunter felt were especially memorable: the addition of a hand-rolled cigar bar and a mini-doughnut stand. “They became unexpected highlights that our guests loved and talked about long after the day had passed,” Mackenzie notes. —Sherri Hildebrandt

Sydney and Jeff ’s Andaz wedding was a magical day to remember. The picturesque resort provided a lush green backdrop for a ceremony popping with pastel-colored florals in shades of pinks, purples, yellows and whites. Cacti in the background of the altar, woven baskets lining the aisles and wooden chairs transformed the lawn into a delightful garden-like setting. The bridesmaids’ pink dresses in different patterns and styles added a personal touch to the aesthetic of the day, complemented by the pale pinks of the tablescape. From the pink glasses and linens to the delicate table runner and vases filled with an abundance of florals, the reception table exuded elegance and refinement. Candles scattered throughout the table and strings of lights overhead added a twinkling luminescence as the night came and the party continued. The vibrance of the day carried far into the night as guests took to the dance floor in celebration of Sydney and Jeff ’s beautiful union. —Nicole Wu

A love of adventure and the great outdoors brought Elizabeth Mata and Marcus Thimm together when they both lived in Nebraska. Friendship grew into something bigger, and Marcus decided to curtail a year of long-distance dating and leave the chill of Nebraska for the warmth of Tucson. It wasn’t long before he proposed to Liz at the Westin La Paloma Resort and Spa in Tucson with views of the Santa Catalina Mountains in the distance and their families present. Mountain views were again a factor in their decision to wed at the Royal Palms Resort and Spa in Scottsdale, along with the beautiful architecture and air of romance. Stunning floral bouquets, comprising white and mauve roses, were abundant as table centerpieces and at the ceremony site. The bridesmaids’ gowns and bouquets also reflected those shimmering tones. Guests were treated to a live band during dinner and an espresso bar during cocktail hour, which was an absolute hit and kept the energy high all the way to the after party. The couple’s first dance was to the song “Dancing” by Elevation Worship, which further highlighted their deep love and strong faith. Under a shower of sparklers, Liz and Marcus headed off to start their journey together. —Sherri Hildebrandt
