‘LOVE YOU TO THE MOON AND TO SATURN’
It’s hardly a surprise that here at California Wedding Day, we are in love with love. Every day I open my inbox to a flood of emails recounting the happiest of days. Not a bad job, right? I do count myself as one of the lucky ones who truly loves their job. (See? We’re back to love again!) So, when it comes to creating the magazine, I’m often overwhelmed by the urge to share every story, every image and every moment of the weddings submitted. This issue is filled with inspiration, from the 15 beautiful real weddings (page 111) and trendsetting brides (page 40) to discovering new venues (pages 48 and 54) and finding the perfect details (pages 30 and 36).
One of the highlights of creating this issue was our fashion and beauty shoot at Rosewood Miramar Beach. Not only was the gorgeous oceanfront hotel the best office setting ever, but we had an amazing team of vendors working with us: photographer Chris J. Evans, and hair and makeup artists Laura Rocha, Kacee Geoffroy and Nikole Vega. The talented crew brought to life our vision of showcasing four of the most beloved bridal looks: classic, natural, retro and glam (page 60). Another favorite story is Leta Verbena owner Emma Lee Seitz’s inventive take on simple but elegant florals (page 70). There is so much more packed into these pages, and I hope each and every reader will find something to love.

KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN
AND YOUR INBOXES REFRESHED!
California Wedding Day is launching something new, and we know you’ll love it. Soon you will get to experience the redesign of californiaweddingday.com , bringing you an even more valuable, user-centric and responsive resource across all platforms and devices. We have been hard at work dreaming and envisioning what our newly engaged couples would value, as well as what our wedding pros need. Our ultimate goal is to re-create our site to become a personalized tool for wedding planning, not only from your desk but from mobile devices, for when you’re on the go. That’s all we can say for now, so be on the lookout for more information on social media!
The reveal of our newly designed website couldn’t come at a better time as it happens simultaneously with the publication of our Spring/Summer 2023 issue, marking my 40th time of putting this gorgeous magazine “to bed.” When I began as publisher of California Wedding Day 20 years ago, my biggest inspiration was to be the source for creativity for couples and the wedding industry—and that still holds true today. Oh, how we have done just that!
Current readers may be surprised to learn that we have been successful in our efforts largely because of those who have believed in our core mission and our team, and so we thank our wedding community and all our CWD Members from past to present for their support throughout the years! But at the heart of our success and the most integral part of our existence—really, the only relationship that matters—is between our reader and our writers. California Wedding Day is published first and foremost to be read and experienced. If the magazine functions as it should, it becomes the starting point of every wedding. Our couples turn to us in the beginning for ideas and inspiration and then tap into the sources that fuel our creative spirit and imagination. These wedding professionals are the ones who make wedding dreams come true.
There is much to celebrate, so let’s begin with you and your upcoming wedding. Thank you for entrusting us with your wedding planning. May you be inspired, taken great care of by our California Wedding Day Members, and forever remember the day that begins your future—your wedding day!

MONOCHROMATIC & ROMANTIC
Soft terra-cotta tones, creative florals and Spanish flair infused every detail of this enchanting shoot by Couture Events at Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa. A color palette of caramel, blush and cream created a muted vibe, while textural elements added interest to the design. The ceremony space felt regal and romantic with its cascading linens and draped greenery. As guests moved from the ceremony to the reception space, they were met with a sweeter-than-sweet seating chart installation—miniature floral arrangements in sugar cones to mimic ice cream. The intimate table setting at the reception perfectly complemented its Spanish architectural surroundings, with layers of creams and whites together with elegant touches of gold from the flatware and goldrimmed glassware. Fluffy white and green florals brought a flourishing finish to the tabletop. Perhaps the most stunning detail of the day was the groom’s suit from Friar Tux, with its sophisticated shade of caramel, which seamlessly blended into the vision for the day.

PHOTO STOP
Finding the perfect location for engagement photos can be challenging, and ensuring they reflect your relationship is even trickier. Drew Tuma, a morning meteorologist for KGO-TV in San Francisco, and his fiancé, Joey Hersh, made their engagement photos truly individual by having them taken during their annual tradition of a high-fashion date night at McDonald’s. This simple, sentimental outing began one year when their Valentine’s Day reservations were inadvertently canceled. Dressed to the nines, the couple found themselves dining on hamburgers and fries under the Golden Arches. So, when it came time for their engagement photos, they slipped on their Christian Louboutin loafers and headed to Mickey D’s for one of the cutest and most stylish shoots we’ve ever seen, captured by photographer Stephanie Lynn. —Lara M. Something BORROWED
Karissa Delzell and Matt Rosi epitomized the wedding tradition of “something borrowed,” beginning with their decision to marry at Garden Valley Ranch, where Karissa’s parents were married more than 30 years before. Her parents first visited the venue in the winter of 1989. Karissa’s mother had just finished a round of chemotherapy and had barely had the energy to envision the roses blooming at the ranch in the summer, let alone tour the property. However, Karissa’s dad had faith that the venue would come alive, and it bloomed into color for the wedding. When Karissa toured it in the winter of 2021, her parents’ assurances and wedding photos convinced her that this was where her wedding would happen.
Karissa and Matt said “I do” under a gazebo in a lush garden, throughout which crystal chandeliers hung among white florals and hues of dusty blue. Guests dined outdoors under bistro lighting. The couple even recreated photos taken at her parents’ wedding, a suggestion made by photographer Alicia Parks.
“This gorgeous wedding was one of the most special I have ever shot,” Alicia says. “There were so many beautiful tears and memories made.”
In one photo, Karissa sits with her bridal party and flower girls around her. In another, the couple poses on the site’s bridge, and for another, they sit at the edge of a circular brick fountain in the garden. Reviving family weddings is a great way to honor tradition, drawing on brides’ and grooms’ backgrounds.
“Faith, family and the best photographer made this day truly magical,” says Karissa. —Teya Heidenreich

Ensuring every guest felt loved was one of Haley and Ryan Witting’s main goals for their wedding at The Cliffs Hotel and Spa in Pismo Beach. The couple paid special attention to every detail, with one of the most unique being quotation cards at each guest’s place setting. The thoughtful cards are a dinnerparty tradition in the bride’s family by which each guest is given a quotation card at their place setting to read aloud as a conversation topic. Haley and Ryan set to work curating and selecting quotations that they felt resonated with their friends and family.
—Lara M. BurnapROYAL INSPIRATION
Dreamy to its core, this styled shoot by Carol Keiner of THE BLUSHING DETAILS (@theblushingdetails) drew its inspiration from one special accessory: an ethereal dove headpiece from Awon Golding Millinery in the U.K. If the name rings a bell, yes—it’s the same renowned headpiece designer who has created several bespoke fashions for the Princess of Wales herself. Resembling doves fluttering above the head, the headpiece inspired a theme epitomizing magical spring romance. Soft florals in shades of mauve, peach and cream, a regal stationery suite and timeless table settings were among the lovely details that shone with the sunset in the Malibu Coastal Range.

ROSEVILLE DESIGNS
Central to this sweet suite is a custom wedding crest, which is letterpress-printed alongside other details in hunter green letterpress on pillowy cotton paper. For a personal touch, the bride sketched the venue on a tag tied with hand-dyed blush silk ribbon. @rosevilledesigns
Designed to complement their destination venue—Palm Springs—the couple requested shades of green, teal, marigold and pink for their letterpress suite. Clean lines and typefaces lend themselves to the mid-century modern feel of their desert soiree.

GLOW YOUR OWN WAY
REFRESH AND REJUVENATE YOUR SKIN WITH OUR FAVORITE PRODUCTS
Go all in and pair House of the Rozetree’s primer with its best-selling BRIGHT EYES UNDER-EYE HIGHLIGHTER ($36). This magic wand is a concealer and highlighter, and has a lightweight, silky texture that glides over the skin. The peach tone works with all skin types to counteract darkness under the eyes. In addition, it’s a great brightener to use on the brow bone and eyelids. And, if happy tears arise on your wedding day, the water-resistant formula will stay put.
California–based makeup artist Rhyan Townsend, owner of HOUSE OF THE ROZETREE , worked with a cosmetic chemist to formulate AMERICAN GLOW ILLUMINATING PRIMER FOR ALL ($42) specifically for brides requesting that “glowingskin look.” To achieve this effect, Townsend developed this nutrient-rich, water-based primer, which is easily absorbed into the skin to create a perfect canvas for makeup application. Containing hyaluronic acid, American Glow controls oils, hydrates and gives skin that coveted dewy, pearlescent finish.
Achieve soft, illuminated skin with ABI AMÉ’S SUMMER SKIN ($38–$52). This lightweight, vitamin-packed serumlotion hybrid is the perfect antidote to body products that leave skin sticky and sweaty. Summer Skin glides on and is quickly absorbed, leaving skin silky smooth and luminous.
KARUNA SKIN’S GOODNIGHT GLOW-TO’S ($65) gives new meaning to the term “beauty sleep.” This bundle, featuring four of Karuna’s bestsellers, gives skin a rejuvenating wake-up call by using powerful ingredients including turmeric, niacinamide, aloe vera and peptides. This nighttime essential includes the nourishing overnight Sleeping Mask, the Multi-Tasking Face Oil to help calm and balance, Lights Out Cream to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and the skin plumping Age-Defying Face Mask.
Founder Eunice Koo’s Korean heritage inspired her vegan cleansing balm, MELT AWAY BUTTER, BY YOONIQUE SKIN ($58). Its curated ingredients give a nod to her grandmother’s skin care routine, which included homemade treatments created from flowers and plants in her garden as well as natural oils, all working together to heal breakouts, hydrate and replenish. Infused with these ancient remedies, this one-step cleanser removes makeup, sunscreen, and daily dirt and grime, all while restoring moisture and leaving skin ready for the next step.
SOLVASA’S 360° RADIANCE ($140) works from the inside and out by integrating the skin, body and mind. The collection features the Crystal Energy Wand, a multifunctional facial tool that releases tension, decreases the signs of inflammatory stress and increases micro-circulation; Destressance Serum, to help firm and brighten skin; and Golden Moment Turmeric Elixir, Solvasa’s version of the traditional ayurvedic golden milk. The dairy-free blend is infused with aromatic spices and adaptogens turmeric and ashwagandha to support your body’s resilience to stress and inflammation.
After selling cult favorite Kiehl’s Since 1851 to L’Oreal, beauty visionary Jami Morse Heidegger and husband, Klaus have returned with the holistic skincare line Retrouvé. This powerful, gender-neutral pro-aging line is packed with carefully researched ingredients, such as avocado harvested from the family’s self-sustaining farm in Malibu, that work to enhance the skin’s natural process of nourishing, strengthening and repairing. Opt for the exfoliating SKIN BRILLIANCE PRIMING PADS ($65) followed by the INTENSIVE REPLENISHING FACIAL MOISTURIZER ($380/30ml) to boost hydration and reveal radiant, glowing skin. Then give love to the rest of your skin with the luxurious BAUME ULTIME BODY OIL ($240)
RUNWAY BRIDE
TURN THE WEDDING AISLE INTO A HIGH FASHION MOMENT WITH THESE TRADITION-BREAKING TRENDS
More brides are choosing to ditch the white dress tradition for a fashion-forward walk down the aisle in a colorful confection, such as Millia London’s lilac “Lucinda” gown . An armful of blooms, like this bountiful bouquet, gives even more panache to the look.

In lieu of a veil, bride Lyndy McGrody worked with Julie Harris Designs to create custom bridal “wings” to adorn her Maggie Sottero “Minerva” gown. The light and airy cross between a veil and cape that attaches at the shoulder was perfect for the “woodland fairy-tale bridal look” the bride desired. “I opted for wings over a traditional veil because I felt it added an elven princess feel to my bridal look and honored my love for The Lord of the Rings ,” says Lyndy. To accomplish this vision, Harris chose a soft net tulle and adorned it with ivory floral and beaded leaf appliqués, which she hand-dyed to match the peach hue of Lyndy’s dress. “The lace appliqués on the wings organically flowed into the lace on the bodice of the gown,” says Harris. “And trailed off into soft, plain tulle that allowed the details of the gown’s train to shine through.”

Billowing sleeves are having a moment. Bride Kim Marquez put a spin on the look by incorporating soft, flowing sleeves into her form-fitting Galia Lahav gown. Timeless and fashion-forward, the look was perfect for her wedding at Vibiana in downtown Los Angeles. The pièces de résistance were her René Caovilla “Floriane” heels , which spiral around the ankle. Also, Kim chose not to bustle her dress so that her gown would look and feel the same throughout the evening. Kim’s wedding planner, Cynthia Baghdasarian of With a Flair Events, sums it up best, saying, “Sometimes you can break the rules a bit when it comes to gown selections and fittings—and still end up with a perfect, classic yet just-for-you look.”

Not a fan of dresses? No problem. Designers such as Amanda James Bridal and En Blanc (pictured here) are adding chic pantsuits and jumpers to their look books . For same-sex couples who love the tradition of a gown and a suit, these outfits lend a masculine edge with feminine styling. Separates are also ideal for a casual yet elegant wedding, an outfit change for the reception or a sleek look for a rehearsal dinner.

ADVENTURES IN HONEYMOONING
WE’VE GATHERED SEVEN DESTINATIONS THAT ARE CLOSE TO NATURE AND FILLED WITH ROMANCE, FROM FAR FLUNG BEACH DESTINATIONS TO DESERT GETAWAYS
ORIGINS BY MANTISCOSTA RICA
Origins by Mantis (originslodge.com) is a dr eam destination for couples who desire serenity, nature and adventure without sacrificing five-star luxury. The boutique lodge is nestled in Costa Rica’s northern rain forest on 111 acres of jungle overlooking the lush Upala Valley. The verdant grounds feature the intimate Laka-Tii Spa; an open-air yoga pavilion; six private luxury lodges featuring fire-heated plunge pools, handcrafted canopy beds and open-air bathrooms; as well as a stunning three-bedroom tree house, Villa Vertigo.
Foodies will delight in the fare at El Salto, located in the residential-style main lodge, which is also home to a peaceful infinity pool and 180-degree views of the valley and Lake Nicaragua. Michelin-starred chef Jean-Luc L’Hourre curates the menu daily, bringing his haute French take on laid-back Latin cuisine while using ingredients sourced from the estate’s extensive organic garden. Adventure seekers and nature lovers can partake in a wide range of experiences, such as a rain forest hike to the Oro Waterfall (keep your eyes open for sloths), horseback riding, farm tours, medicinal plant tours, lagoon fishing, birdwatching, nocturnal walks— all within the vast property.
Conservation and sustainability are the anchors of Origins. Consequently, no chemical pesticides are used (pack mosquito repellent!), the resort is nearly free of plastic, and the kitchen composts its food waste—and these are just a few of its green practices. The tranquil vibe of
Mother Nature lends itself beautifully to the lodge’s wellness practices. You can make your honeymoon even more memorable by designing a custom retreat that includes luxurious spa treatments and healing experiences, such as guided yoga and meditation practice, sound baths and breathwork sessions. There are also off-site experiences to consider, such as a visit to a butterfly sanctuary or rafting in nearby Tenorio Volcano National Park. Intimate weddings are an option at Origins as well, with ceremonies taking place in the main lodge or the yoga shambala, and receptions featuring a one-of-a-kind dinner created by chef L’Hourre.
CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO
If you’re craving that international vibe, but want to keep the flight short and sweet, there’s no better place than Cabo San Lucas. Rated the No. 1 all-inclusive resort in Mexico by Tripadvisor’s 2022 Travelers’ Choice Awards, the Grand Velas Los Cabos (@grandvelascabos) is the ideal oasis for
GRAND VELAS LOS CABOS
honeymooners, where they will find the luxury of choice and warm hospitality. The AAA Five Diamond resort reimagines the all-inclusive experience, providing guests with amazing restaurants (one with a two-Michelin-star chef at the helm), a luxurious 35,000-square-foot spa and first-class accommodations, such as the Grand Class Suite, with its own private plunge pool. For honeymooners, there is no shortage of activities to indulge in—from couples massages and love rituals to the Wine Lovers’ Experience and an option to charter the property’s very own 55-foot Bella yacht to cruise the azure waters of the Pacific Ocean.
PALOS VERDES, CALIFORNIA
Stay close to home but feel like you are a million miles away at Terranea Resort (@terranearesort) in Palos Verdes. Perched atop dramatic cliffs overlooking a protected marine preserve and kelp forest, the resort feels like an oceanfront sanctuary. With beautiful Mediterranean architecture and admirable environmental practices, this sprawling
102-acre property offers guests more than 75 acres of the natural Southern California landscape to explore. Naturalist-led trail walks, as well as activities such as seaside yoga and painting, give guests an opportunity to learn about local flora and fauna. The hotel itself is well equipped for any weekend getaway, with four pools, a spa and salon, a nine-hole golf course, eight dining options, enticing courtyards, outdoor fireplaces and telescopes, bars, a fitness studio and a well-curated boutique. With accommodations that include stylish casitas and villas, guest rooms and suites, you can choose to embrace the lively ambiance of the resort or opt for more privacy.
TERRANEA RESORT
BEND, OREGON
Unfolding across 3,300 forested acres, just moments from Bend, Oregon, Sunriver Resort (@sunriverresort) is the Pacific Northwest’s treasured location for honeymooners seeking post-wedding bliss. An all-season wilderness retreat (with 300 days of sunshine each year), Sunriver Resort is a place of storied traditions, drawing couples in to experience the holy trinity of relaxation, rejuvenation and adventure.
Cozy rooms offer all the comforts of home with a dash of opulence. Sage Springs Club & Spa provides access to fitness classes, massage therapy, facials and more, while the indoor-outdoor pool invites you to unwind with a private cabana and a libation poolside.
Adventurous couples can enjoy rafting, horseback riding, snowshoeing and golf at four award-winning golf courses, all on the sprawling property; skiing and snowboarding are just a short drive away at Mount Bachelor. Sunriver Resort is committed to sustainability, the preservation of nature and an independent, local mindset—and it’s dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry friend along!
COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE, WASHINGTON
Nestled in the picturesque Columbia River Gorge in Washington lies a hidden gem waiting to be explored. Skamania Lodge (@skamanialodge), which opened its doors in 1993, represents the quintessential honeymoon experience, offering newlyweds an escape from the city to a breathtaking landscape, where they can create memorable moments together to treasure forever. During daylight hours, couples can lean on nature to help recharge and reconnect, whether through an active outdoor excursion—hiking, windsurfing, kiteboarding, golf—instructor-led yoga, meditation, forest bathing, or with a glass of wine and a good book. After a day of adventuring, couples can enjoy a relaxing massage at the Waterleaf Spa before indulging in a gourmet, locally sourced meal at the Cascade Dining Room or River Rock Lounge.
SEDONA, ARIZONA
The canyon is calling—and Enchantment Resort (@enchantment_resort) in Sedona, Arizona, is ready to welcome you to honeymoon bliss. Surrounded by acres of pristine wilderness in the heart of Boynton Canyon, Enchantment offers couples an unmatched opportunity to connect to nature. According to the resort, “Whether you prefer to relax poolside, explore the hiking and biking trails, nurture your creative side with an art experience or spend time on our tennis and pickleball courts, adventure surrounds you.”
Enchantment has just launched its “Many Moons” package, which is designed to encourage a deeper connection to those we love—perfect for newly married couples. It includes daily breakfast, credit for the Spa Suites at Boynton Canyon and a private excursion (hiking the Red Rocks, hiking under the stars or mountain biking are among the plentiful options). For the ultimate honeymoon indulgence, couples can book a pool suite, complete with a private plunge pool or spa pool with stunning views.
SEABROOK, WASHINGTON
Winter, spring, summer or fall, the idyllic town of Seabrook, located on the Washington coast, delivers romance and nature in a small-town setting. A Pacific Northwest rendition of Gilmore Girls ’ Stars Hollow or the renowned Seaside, Florida, Seabrook was founded by Casey Roloff, who developed the town with a focus on new urban design and an intention to create connectivity and community.
The town offers an escape to tranquility and neverending views of the Pacific Ocean from its perch
atop a bluff. Rent one of the many cozy cottages, which are beautifully appointed and feel like you’ve moved into a home away from home. Plus, all the homes feature porches for watching the sunset and the neighbors pass by. Best of all, the community is quite walkable, whether out to dinner, the spa, shopping or, of course, the main attraction, the beach. Summer brings town events such as wine tastings, a concert series, Founders Day and more. And yes, weddings are also a dream come true at The Belfry at Seabrook (@belfryatseabrook), a beautiful blank slate awaiting your personal touch.
STRIKE IT RICH
IN 1871, TWO ATTORNEYS found themselves in what is now known as the city of Orange. Wanting to create a prosperous—indeed rich—farming community, they deemed the city “Richland.” However, it turned out that a similarly named city already existed near Sacramento, so the two founders decided on Orange, a name that stuck and inspired the planting of the citrus groves that are now a signature of the region.
Opening this fall, The Richland hotel pays homage to its home city’s roots by taking the original name of the town. Yet it’s also looking to the future, set to be a go-to destination for Southern California nearly weds.
Part of the 24 Carrots Collective of venues and situated in the heart of Orange Plaza on Maple Avenue, the boutique hotel and
event space features two early-20th-century buildings: the main home, which is now the hotel; and a chapel, which has been converted into an events space. The original owners of the 1905 home hosted one of the first weddings on the property in 1914, for their niece, Hattie Estelle. It was a simple ceremony but one steeped in love—and one that, according to an article in The Orange Post, included “no unseemly demonstrations.” Now, the hotel invites couples to tie the knot in its 200-person Estelle Ballroom, named in honor of the first bride to say “I do” on the premises.
Extensive renovations of the original buildings began in 2021 with the goal of restoring the early-20th-century structures to their former glory. The house features a two-story, modified classic box floor plan, with a multi-hip and gable
roof—which means it’s cozy with an understated elegance. Over the years, the original charm of the building was obscured by a storefront that was added in the 1960s. The architects of the hotel worked carefully to remove the addition and restore the original facade, ultimately discovering a stunning bay window that overlooks the welcoming front porch. Exterior stucco and wood siding were removed to reveal original wood shingles and lap siding, and original wood flooring in the main house has been refinished.
The hoteliers describe The Richland as a place to “stay and gather.” It is at once a homey place to recharge as well as a watering hole for socializing, inviting guests to come together and celebrate special moments in an unusual and delightful atmosphere.
READY FOR TAKE-OFF
At the Commemorative Air Force hangars in Camarillo, brides and grooms can tie the knot under the sun and among vintage planes to make for an unforgettable day. An entirely volunteer-run museum/facility dedicated to preserving the memory of those who fought in World War II, the hangar is filled with restored planes from that war. In this setting, a wedding in a CAF hangar is nothing short of cinematic, so it’s no wonder the property has been used in countless films and TV shows, including The Bachelorette, MasterChef and too many designer advertisements to name. The vintage airplanes can also be brought out during events to introduce a unique visual element. Ceremonies can take place out on the tarmac or inside the hangar, with the option to have the doors open to reveal unobstructed views of the Spanish Hills in the distance or closed to create a modern industrial look.
With the capacity to accommodate as many as 1,000 guests and complimentary parking provided, the venue is well-equipped to make planning seamless for wedded couples to-be. The CAF hangars are also centrally located just about equidistant from Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, making it ideally situated for couples with loved ones scattered throughout Southern California.
What’s more, all of the planes kept at the hangar are in flying condition, so couples not only can say “I do” on the runway, but also find themselves airborne in a oncein-a-lifetime joyride to commemorate their special day.

Thus, the oceanside property, with its decidedly Hamptons flair, provided the perfect backdrop for hair and makeup experts Love Laura Rocha, KG Beauty and NV Glam Studio to work their magic to create four favorite bridal styles: glam, retro, sun-kissed and elegant.

THREE DESIGNS SHOWCASE HOW DAINTY FLORALS CAN HAVE A DRAMATIC EFFECT ON YOUR DESIGN SCHEME
Photography by BYC Photography
Design by Leta Verbena Floral Design
Text by Chelsea Gibson
Oversize bouquets and extravagant arrangements have reigned in the wedding world for years. While grandiose floral installations have their place in wedding design, a daintier style can be equally stunning while also being budget friendly. And don’t think that choosing a more understated approach has to sacrifice style or luxury. Using a range of items, from mixed containers to luxury blooms, Leta Verbena Floral Design created three stunning designs based on the principle that less can be more and just as beautiful. “All of these setups are easier on the wallets,” says Leta Verbena owner Emma Lee Seitz, “and celebrate a wide variety of color palettes and styles for a spring wedding.”
This bold ceremony and tablescape features Pink Floyd roses and white phalaenopsis orchids, demonstrating dramatic luxury done on a minimal scale. The vivid tones of reds and pinks pack a punch, so you don’t need as many stems to make a statement. Garden roses and orchids (phalaenopsis, cymbidium and dendrobium are featured here), along with dinner plate dahlias, anthurium and ranunculus, all bring major heft, volume and drama. Towering bud vases on the tables also allow the flowers to take center stage without being intrusive.
“This entire setup was inspired by Australian designers, and we’ll be seeing setups like this for the next few years.”
— Emma Seitz of Leta Verbena
“Greenery being the focus of the florals goes well beyond the traditional notions of eucalyptus and the dark emerald ruscus you see in grocery store bouquets.”
— Emma Seitz of Leta Verbena
Going beyond traditional greenery on the table, this design presents a “living garden” on a base of deer moss. A mix of delicate springtime blooms, including sweet pea, nigella, garden roses, reflexed tulips, Icelandic poppies and tree peonies, is nestled in the earthy foundation to bring a sense of the natural world directly to the dinner table. For the ceremony installation—inspired by the idea of a beloved ceremony tree being brought indoors—Seitz wanted to highlight how much color you can introduce with foliage. The stems of ninebark, willow and cotinus plants pulled in shades of burgundy and black, and pinks and reds were represented by ti leaves.
“Blended with traditional emerald (huckleberry and salal) and delicate baby’s breath, this tree is perfect for a secluded corner or an intimate ceremony that brings the dark and moody side of greenery to life,” notes Seitz.
Sometimes it’s not about the blooms, but what holds the blooms. Bowing to the on-trend blue-and-white wedding color palette, this design features mismatched vases in a Delft blue print with citrus-hued florals to make the blue pattern pop. The monochromatic floral design is a mix of low-profile arrangements of garden spray roses, tulips, ranunculus, Icelandic poppies and orange cosmos—all nice options for a spring soiree. “This cluster would also be great for a welcome table, the start of an aisle or any corner that needs some cheering up,” says Seitz.

ONE VINE DAY
ROMANCE MINGLES WITH RANCH LUXURY AT Q VINEYARD AT HUMMINGBIRD NEST RANCH
This invitation suite by Queen Bee Design Studio sets the palette of the wedding to come with beautiful color blocks of soft greens and blush, with a touch of golden ochre. A combination of hand-painted and printed florals introduce texture, as the cotton-pressed paper instills elegance into the suite. To complement the color scheme, the groom sports a singular dark olive-green suit by Friar Tux.
With its rolling hills and bountiful grapevines, Q Vineyard, Hummingbird Nest’s new venue, presents a picturesque setting for the ceremony. Jamison Events created a romantic niche for the couple’s exchange of vows by draping elegant swaths of fabric over a rectangular frame, and accenting it with roses, tulips and verdant foliage.
A custom-made arch frames the reception table, creating a luxurious look for the reception. The flowers, amber cut-glass goblets and velvet napkins bring in warm golden shades, while the layered place settings heighten the textural elements on the tabletop. The name card by Queen Bee mirrors the invitation suite with its hand-painted florals.
The bubbly cart does double duty displaying escort cards tucked onto the Champagne glasses. The striking cocktail menu is a design standout.
“We wanted to feature the beauty of this new space at Hummingbird with a pop of color; a mustard tone was the ultimate inspiration. And the backdrop of the rolling hills at Q Vineyard was the perfect setting ”
Fairy lights and drop lighting over the bar create a beautiful backdrop to the dance floor inside the barn at Q Vineyard.

AVERY & SHANE
Married and celebrated: AVALON HOTEL PALM SPRINGS
Date: JANUARY 22, 2022
It was a honey-sweet celebration for Avery Ashurst and Shane Robinson at the Avalon Hotel Palm Springs. With a classically minimalist design, planner Michelle Garibay drew inspiration from bride Avery’s family beekeeping business to create a bohemian atmosphere with a golden-hour color palette featuring pops of black. Avery dazzled in a sweetheart-neckline gown with detached puff sleeves and a stunning lace train that flowed behind her. A crystal head piece brought a touch of sparkle to the look that was echoed in her jeweled heels. Shane kept it classic with a black, three-piece suit and bowtie accented with a white pocket square and boutonniere in a neutral shade. The florals featured romantic roses in honey tones combined with dried palms and pampas grass, creating a balanced variety of textures. The ceremony took place beneath a white pagoda-style tent trimmed in black. In lieu of traditional place cards, guests selected from a wall of miniature jars of honey, each labeled with a name and table designation. The sit-down dinner exuded warmth, with the tablescapes featuring wooden chargers, linen napkins, muted pink florals and a smattering of tapered candles. Hexagonal signage represented the honeycombs of Avery’s family’s beekeeping heritage, which can be traced back more than a century. As the night came to an end, the newlyweds cut into their three-tiered, rose-hued cake with a textured finish. Its rosy richness tied in beautifully with the warm and inviting atmosphere.

ANGELINE & HAMED
Married and celebrated: LOS VERDES GOLF COURSE, RANCHO PALOS VERDES
Date: JUNE 18, 2022
College sweethearts Angeline Bernabe and Hamed Hokamzadeh brought the world of Bridgerton—the bride’s favorite TV show—to life with their modern, Regency-inspired wedding. Guests were welcomed with the regal sounds of a string quartet playing the couple’s favorite songs as they made their way to the 10th tee, which was decorated with a floral gate, a grand Sofreh Aghd and a floral arch. Each seat held a Lady Whistledown-inspired program and a wooden fan from the Philippines embossed with the couple’s hashtag in honor of Angeline’s Filipino heritage. Their multicultural ceremony was a nod to their heritage. They began with a condensed Catholic ceremony, officiated by Father Brian Delvaux of the Good Shepherd Church before exchanging their own vows. To honor the bride’s background, their sponsors draped a veil and cord over the couple and lit a unity candle to signify their union. A nod to the groom’s Iranian heritage, the couple took part in an Aghd tradition where the officiant, Ali Ghadaksaz, led a sugar and honey ceremony. Moving into cocktail hour, the quartet continued to play as guests enjoyed Bridgerton-themed libations on the terrace amid beautiful sunset views. During the reception, the bride and groom surprised their parents with their first dance to “How Deep Is Your Love” by the Bee Gees. Neither the bride nor the groom’s parents had a wedding of their own, so everyone ensured this was an unforgettable experience.

ALEXANDRIA & BRENT
Married and celebrated: HUDSON LOFT, CULVER CITY
Date: MAY 14, 2022
Alexandria Turner and Brent Butler have known each other since they were 13 years old. They grew up in the same neighborhood and were best friends by the end of high school, but it wasn’t until their junior year of college that they started dating. A few years later, the best friends became husband and wife, tying the knot in stylish fashion at Hudson Loft in Culver City. While searching for the right look for their wedding, Alexandria and Brent found a way to fuse their two different styles. Alexandria is drawn to pops of color and drama, while Brent prefers muted shades and minimalism. So, what did this fusion look like? A chic and streamlined design accented by muted oranges and green. Though their aesthetic preferences may differ, Alexandria and Brent agreed wholeheartedly on one thing: to work with as many Black and female wedding vendors as possible. The couple took care to pay attention to the details, which highlighted the importance of their family and friends as well as their readiness to party. Chairs for the ceremony were arranged in a circular fashion to create a sense of togetherness, and lottery tickets were placed at every dining seat in envelopes reading “For richer or for poorer (hopefully richer).” They also provided foosball, air hockey and a 360-degree photo booth during cocktail hour. Alexandria’s and Brent’s sartorial prowess shone as they stood in front of their loved ones. Brent wore an asymmetrical sage green, mandarin-collared sports coat with khaki pants that included a matching sage green stripe down the side of each leg; Alexandria was the picture of grace in a V-neck sleeveless gown with a low scoop back. To close the ceremony, the couple jumped the broom and made their way to the reception, where they had their first dance to “Superpower” by Beyoncé and Frank Ocean. As everyone enjoyed the party, guests took a moment to leave voice messages on a red telephone, which had been set up in lieu of a guest book. Now, Alexandria and Brent can always remember their wedding by listening to the recorded voices of their friends and family.

JONIKA & HANS
Married and celebrated: VALENTINE, DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES
Date: JULY 23, 2022
Jonika Kelso took a unique approach to designing her and Hans VanBrill’s wedding. Instead of picking one style to be carried throughout the celebration, she looked at each component of their big day individually, curating distinctive atmospheres for every moment. “Italian Summer” was the theme for the bridesmaids’ looks, while the tablescapes were defined by a sense of minimalism. Yet despite this seeming disparity, there was a definite sense of cohesion throughout the whole affair. Jonika has a penchant for all things vintage, which was evident during the event. Jonika’s brother, who officiated the ceremony, wore an antique coral brooch set with matching earrings. The bride herself wore a collection of her mother’s handkerchiefs, which served as both her something borrowed and something blue. Jonika and Hans’ love for Hawaii also was on show throughout. Valentine, in downtown Los Angeles, is known for its vintage tropical look, seamlessly tying together the couple’s aesthetics. It was very important to the couple that their menu was exciting and fresh for their guests, including both the physical menu, which was designed by Jonika’s friend Kara, as well as the food itself. A raw bar at cocktail hour invited guests to indulge in the island vibe, while dinner was a family-style feast that included sweet corn pasta, braised short ribs and other delectables. Jonika says, “I have never been privy to wedding trends myself, but I wanted to do what felt fun and right for us as a couple.”

MARISSA & SCOTT
Married and celebrated: BELLA COLLINA SAN CLEMENTE
Date: OCTOBER 16, 2021
A traditional wedding wasn’t the plan for Marissa George and Scott Kressin, but rather, an unconventional, unforgettable party with family and friends. And that’s just what they pulled off, starting with Marissa’s walk down the aisle to a Justin Bieber song to remember the first concert they attended together. The modern wedding fête was filled with bohemian-chic details, such as dried florals and an autumnal color palette of burgundy, forest green and burnt orange, which was accented with earthy touches, like woven details at place settings. Velvet linens added an element of luxury, while nature-inspired books about birds, bees and florals were scattered throughout the tablescape to create an elevated garden party vibe. And Marissa and Scott’s beloved pups were in attendance in the form of custom neon signs shaped in their likenesses, which hung behind the oversize bar. The alfresco reception featured cool details like leather tassel escort cards and a dessert display of macarons and cookies—some of which were adorned with images of the dogs. Marissa advises, “Know what you want your wedding day to be like and stick to that plan!”

GRACE & ANTHONY
Married and celebrated: VIBIANA AND THE GARDEN AT REDBIRD, LOS ANGELES
Date: NOVEMBER 27, 2021
Grace Fraser and Anthony Etchegoyen love a lot of things in life. Foremost among those are their friends and family, food and each other—all of which were reflected at their intimate wedding at Vibiana and The Garden at Redbird in downtown Los Angeles. The couple met at a party when they were both freshmen in college, and they felt an instant connection. For the next four years, they would pass their time at the beach and began to build their life together. More than a decade after that fateful party, Grace and Anthony prepared to tie the knot. Choosing where to say “I do” was easy. After all, Grace’s father and stepmom, chef Neal Fraser and Amy Knoll Fraser, own and operate Vibiana and Redbird. Very important to Grace and Anthony is their love for dining out and delicious meals, so naturally, the focal point of their wedding was food. Grace’s Aunt Tiffany, who also got married at Vibiana, officiated the ceremony, taking care to include personal details when she spoke of the couple. Cocktail hour featured the couple’s favorite magician, Hannibal, and their favorite pizza in LA from Zach Pollack, chef-owner of the restaurants Alimento and Cosa Buona. The reception featured a four-course, family-style dinner crafted by Grace’s father, Chef Neal Fraser. After dinner, the party continued upstairs in the West Room, where guests danced and hammed it up in the photo booth. Later, Grace’s father and stepmother surprised the couple with late-night bites cooked up by their friends Arjun and Nakul Mahendro, owners and chefs at Badmaash. The couple became so swept up in the festivities that they forgot their first dance, which Grace said was ultimately a blessing, considering they hadn’t practiced enough anyway. But that’s not to say they didn’t take to the floor later to dance the night away among their friends and family. “We wanted our wedding to be a celebration of our love, a feast of all our favorite foods and dancing until we couldn’t dance anymore,” said Grace. “When we woke up the next day, we both said we wished we could do it all over again.”

ANNIE & GAVIN
Married and celebrated: ELLA’S VINEYARD, CRESTON
Date: MAY 28, 2022
“Our paths have probably crossed a million times,” says bride Annie Pankowski of her now husband, Gavin Nieto. “But of all places, our paths crossed in a gym in Southern California.” The Orange County natives share a love of many things, but the dominant common thread through their lives is hockey. Unknowingly, the two both grew up going to Anaheim Ducks games with their families—sitting just half a section and one row apart. And when the time came for Gavin to get down on one knee, there was no place more appropriate to do so than at the University of Wisconsin hockey rink, with an intimate cadre of friends and family bearing witness. The couple’s wedding at the charmingly pastoral Ella’s Vineyard in Creston paid homage to their shared past while evoking a sense of warmth and family. “We knew that creating a fun, easily approachable event was a must!” says planner Nena Johansen of Vino Fiore Events. “We wanted to take their bright, sunny personalities and relay that into their fun design.” Muted, warm tones took center stage with mustard, blush, dusty mauve, creams and toffee hues making appearances in the organic, free-flowing design. Annie made her way down the aisle in a sleekly feminine V-neck gown to meet Gavin at the altar. Officiating the ceremony was the couple’s friend Chris, making for a full-circle moment, as he was the one who introduced Annie and Gavin to one another. The reception was filled with love and joy, perfectly reflecting the couple being celebrated. Acknowledging the invisible string that has bound the newlyweds together, Annie and Gavin had ice cream sandwiches from Negranti Creamery served to guests—the same exact sandwiches they both ate between the second and third periods of hockey games as children.

LINDSEY & CHASE
Married and celebrated: 1880 UNION HOTEL, LOS ALAMOS
Date: OCTOBER 16, 2021
Lindsey Konig and Chase Redfield met like many of their millennial cohorts do: online. This Bumble success story budded as the couple bonded over their upbringings, shared friends, the outdoors, and a taste for travel and adventure, which culminated in their beautiful wedding at 1880 Union Hotel in Los Alamos. Chase was a history major in college, so he picked the historic venue for its personality and flair. Lindsey had once worked for a Newport Beach landscape design firm. While there, she had developed an affinity for handmade and organic pottery, which she infused into her wedding day; most of the large terra-cotta urns used in the décor were imported Egyptian pottery. A monochromatic vibe was given off by various subtle tones of champagne and creamy white. This palette permeated every detail of the polished yet boho-inspired wedding—from the bridesmaids’ fashion to the dried and bleached floral elements. Guests particularly loved the unusual escort wall, which featured escort cards tied to a small bud vase filled with bleached florals. Another highlight of the day was the sultry saxophone player, who rocked the house and delivered an epic performance for this music-loving couple.

LEXIE & SAMMY
Married and celebrated: SILVERADO RESORT AND SPA
Date: AUGUST 27, 2022
Lexie Sokolow and Sammy Sarshar put friends and family first for their fun-filled celebration in Napa Valley. The bucolic Silverado Resort and Spa served as the perfect setting for the couple’s opulent yet cozy nuptials, which embodied the luxurious yet homey atmosphere unique to California’s wine country. Lexie wore an on-trend corseted gown by Netta BenShabu, with cobalt Manolo Blahnik kitten heels serving as her “something blue.” A pearl veil created an understated shimmer as she made her way down the aisle to Sammy, who had opted for a classic tuxedo. The two exchanged vows beneath a taupe pergola, which was bedecked in florals in shades of orange and powder pinks. Guests came from near and far to celebrate, and there was no shortage of dancing and merriment during the reception. The festivities kicked off with a synchronized dance with the couple and their parents, before guests quickly refueled with the first course of dinner. However, there wasn’t time for entrées to be served before everyone was back on their feet for the hora. To end the night, Lexie and Sammy switched into their glad rags to head to a jubilant after-party in the Silverado mansion, celebrating into the small hours of the morning.

ILANA & YOSEF
Married and celebrated: FOUR SEASONS HOTEL LOS ANGELES AT BEVERLY HILLS
Date: JUNE 20, 2022
Ilana Stoll and Yossi Manela began their big day by sharing an exciting first look in the garden of The Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills. The courtyard was a vision for the elegant ceremony, with an entry gate inviting guests to their seats, a tapestry of florals and two swans by the pond. Guests began their evening noshing appetizers while enjoying acts of prestidigitation by a magician from The Magic Castle and music by a quartet. Then, Ilana and Yossi wed under a traditional chuppah wedding canopy. At the reception, lush with pink roses, the Four Seasons catered a kosher meal, and a second group of about 120 guests arrived at about 8 p.m. Guests enjoyed crudites in shot glasses, a fish taco station, a meat-carving station, gourmet sausage and hot dogs, fries in cones and an endless dessert station. As a surprise, comedian Elon Gold was brought out to end the evening with laughter.

ANYSSA & MIKE
Married and celebrated: QUAIL RANCH, SIMI VALLEY
Date: JULY 23, 2022
Anyssa Clark and Mike Eden met on a blind date. In the parking lot of a local coffee shop, Anyssa watched as Mike got out of his car and, once he fully emerged, she couldn’t help but exclaim, “Whoa, you’re tall!”—and the rest is history. Quail Ranch met all the criteria for their wedding venue, with its beautifully landscaped front yard, picturesque ceremony space and incredibly hospitable staff. Anyssa originally adhered to the standard schedule for procuring her wedding dress. A year out, she was all set with what she thought was the perfect ensemble for her big day. However, a mere few months before the couple’s wedding date, Instagram scrolling got the better of her. She found her new perfect dress and couldn’t get it out of her mind. As fate would have it, that dress became available to ship from Australia—and in her size. But in another twist, her bridal salon had her try on a slightly different version of the dress, and Anyssa found herself welling up. “It was more perfect than anything I had ever seen, and I knew it was my dress, despite not being the one I had originally come to see,” says the bride. “And it had pockets!” The new dress was rush ordered and arrived from Down Under with a few weeks to spare, allowing Anyssa to be in her truly perfect gown when she and Mike exchanged “I dos” among friends and family in a sunlight-drenched celebration. A simple palette of delicate pinks and whites, accented with wood tones, let the natural beauty of the venue shine through and set the scene for the couple’s love-filled afternoon.

IAN & KENNY
Married and celebrated: THE EBELL OF LOS ANGELES
Date: APRIL 2, 2022
Ian Day and Kenny Oshita, now the Day-Oshitas, envisioned their nuptials as traditional with an infusion of their personalities. They began dating just after they met in 2014, during their first week of law school, and moved in together in 2015. Their ceremony was truly a family affair, officiated by Ian’s aunt, one of the first people he came out to in college and whom he described as a “bright light in their lives.” In addition, both sets of their parents and the wedding party, made up of their closest friends, also took part in the ceremony. It was followed by a cocktail hour in the courtyard of the historic Ebell of Los Angeles. Ian and Kenny’s primary source of inspiration came from the romance and grandeur of the venue, with shades of green as their color palette. Florals were flowing and elegant, in shades of blush and champagne, and accented with greenery. These arrangements complemented the historic architecture and the wedding’s Japanese elements, which drew upon Kenny’s heritage. Kenny’s mom made the wedding favors, origami kusudama flowers, by hand. She also folded origami wisteria for the welcome sign, which matched the paper wisteria in the dining room as well as the figures on the guests’ name cards indicating their chosen menu item—cranes for chicken, samurai hats for beef and flowers for vegetarian. Back in law school, Kenny had doodled a drawing of the couple that Ian loved, and it inspired the wedding logo that was used on their favors and as a projection on the courtyard wall during the reception.

JACKIE & RAY
Married and celebrated: HOTEL CASA DEL MAR, SANTA MONICA
Date: APRIL 9, 2022
Jackie Chu and Ray Wu wed in a classically glamorous, dreamy celebration at Hotel Casa del Mar. The day provided a fun environment to enjoy the company of friends and family as well as to dance the night away. Jackie and Ray met through Ray’s former roommate in 2013. They connected over fitness: Ray had a health fitness startup, and Jackie made YouTube videos about health and fitness. The festivities kicked off with a first look between the couple, when Ray said, “No one can love me better than she does.” Guests were all smiles during the ceremony, officiated by Ray’s brother Tim. The ceremony space was draped in lush, cascading flowers, and included a grand statement chandelier by planner Dee Lee Designs. The décor reflected the wedding’s colors of white, ivory, blush and gold. Ray wore Nike sneakers instead of dress shoes, while Jackie evoked pure glamour in Valentino heels and jewelry from Van Cleef & Arpels and Roberto Coin.

LUPE & RAFEAL
Married and celebrated: THE FILLMORE ON CENTRAL
Date: MARCH 26, 2022
Lupe Martinez and Rafael Gonzalez’s relationship followed an unusual path: Rafael drove Lupe home once in high school, but they didn’t see each other again until a family gathering 14 years later. They went to church on their first date, which was followed by a romantic gondola ride with flowers and wine. When it came time to wed, it was love at first sight when they toured The Fillmore on Central. They created a romantic and abundantly floral wedding that honored their Latino heritage. Lupe walked down the aisle to “Helium” by Sia, performed on harp and cello by Strange Interlude. With the couple’s three daughters standing beside them and their dogs serving as ring bearers, the ceremony was extra special for them. Their abuelitas (grandmothers) placed a lasso made of hydrangeas over them. Usually, the tradition is carried out by a married couple, but these two women have played significant roles in Lupe’s and Rafael’s lives. The major theme of the wedding was flowers—not surprising since Lupe grows flowers—and most of the florals were planted and harvested specifically for the wedding. This included roses, snapdragons, hanging amaranthus and ranunculus. With their Latino backgrounds, the couple wanted music to be an important part of the night. The couple made a memorable entrance to the reception, arriving to the beat of a banda, and the guests subsequently danced the night away. So much fun was had that even a couple of tables and flower arrangements were knocked over during the garter toss, a moment to remember from a perfect day.

XOCHITL & GREGORY
Married and celebrated: THE CLIFFS HOTEL AND SPA
Date: JULY 9, 2022
Xochitl Acevedo and Greg Nabers married in 2022 with their blended family of three children by their sides. They had been planning their wedding since 2018, but had to deal with a number of postponements because of COVID-19. The couple lives in Florida but opted to wed in California, where they met. Xochitl and Greg’s wedding ceremony featured a custom arch covered in flowers and greenery, which acted as a backdrop as they exchanged vows. A beautiful part of the day was the “sand ceremony,” in which the couple and their three kids each poured a different color of sand into the same container as a symbol of their family union. The event’s décor evoked a beachy, coastal bohemian atmosphere with earthy, natural tones and textures. The succulents that were ever present in the Fresno landscape where Xochitl grew up were incorporated into the florals, along with floribunda and tea roses, air plants and preserved eucalyptus. Dining that evening involved a customized menu with three entrées, each one representing a state meaningful to the couple: California, with Santa Maria–style tri-tip; Florida, with smoked snapper and fried plantains; and Louisiana (where the couple moved shortly after they met), with grilled andouille sausage. They also had a kids’ corner, with free babysitting set up by the reception hall that included movies, crafts, and a buffet with pizza and chicken fingers. For Xochitl and Greg, the best part of their day was saying their vows with the California coastline in the background and later taking pictures of a glorious sunset.
