2020 HAS BEEN A TIME FOR REFLECTION as we have found ourselves in a reality that no one could have imagined. My thoughts have been with all of California’s brides and grooms as you as alter wedding plans due to COVID-19. These times have made all of us hold our loved ones closer than ever.
For some couples, this uncertainty led them to postpone their wedding; others decided to elope while many opted for an intimate celebration. But no matter the decision, one thing remains constant and true: love. This is what we celebrate in this latest issue of California Wedding Day. A wedding is one of the few times in our life where love becomes tangible. Every decision from the blooms in your bouquet to the guest list is a meaningful one. And now more than ever we all want to share love with our family and friends.
One of the brightest spots this year has been the time I’ve spent looking over all of the real weddings, from the pre-pandemic beauties to the small, romantic ceremonies (page 109). The unwavering commitment from wedding vendors from bridal stores and planners to caterers and venues to find a way to celebrate love is a gift in these uncertain times.
To aid in your planning, we immersed ourselves in the emotional beauty of microweddings and elopements (pages 23 and 50), showcase creative ideas for big day décor (pages 24, 60 and 66), and found romance for our fashion shoot at the beautiful La Lomita Ranch in San Luis Obispo (page 40).
I hope that all of you continue to dream, find inspiration, support each other and embrace hope. And know that we here at California Wedding Da y are with you every step of the way.
Lara Morgenson Burnap lara.burnap@tigeroak.comIN 2020 . This may even become the busiest wedding season ever experienced, with an overflow of celebrations extending well into the future. For a little historical perspective, the flu pandemic of 1918 was followed by the Roaring ’20s, a period of provocative social and political change, a booming economy, an evocative new sense of freedom for women—and glamorous celebrations. With that in mind, now is the time to embrace your personal style and be confident in expressing yourself. We are already seeing this surface; for example, our Runway Report (page 36) features Flowers by Lady Buggs’ creative revisions of the classic bridal bouquet.
The virtual possibilities presented by technology for weddings are only beginning to be realized. Although celebrating in person is more desirable and can never be fully replicated in the virtual world, there is something to be said about how Zoom (and similar virtual-meeting platforms) have allowed us to stay connected. As this virtual technology continues to develop, it may be possible for guests from afar to be present virtually as holograms at one’s wedding. Take a look at Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows in Santa Monica, which created a surreal gift of a holographic first-dance experience that can be shared with distant guests, a thoughtful way to memorialize this special occasion.
California Wedding Day members have also shared with us some incredible adaptations. The most notable is the arrangement of guest seating. Guests are now being seated in their own personal groupings. As guests arrive, they are tested for the coronavirus and then gracefully escorted to their intimate table and personal lounge. At last, an excuse to forgo the tedious hours spent arranging that seating chart!
A new theater-style floor plan is also emerging as an option. Teaming up, The Riviera Country Club, BreLuxe Beauty and Shawna Yamamoto Event Design reimagined the traditional wedding layout by combining the ceremony and reception, and putting the ceremony center stage as a live show. As this incredible styled shoot developed, we decided to transform it into a wedding-day giveaway to one lucky couple. After receiving many submissions, California Wedding Day presented the special day to Kellie and Tyler! We learned that COVID-19 had brought this couple together after a long-distance relationship, and that their first date was at The Riviera Country Club, and, well, we knew it was meant to be. Visit californiaweddingday.com for the full story. And for a sneak peek, check out how Kellie and Tyler exchanged vows surrounded by guests seated at reception tables. Other creative design details included a ceremony aisle that was transformed into the dance floor for the couple’s first dance, and live entertainment performed in a spotlight throughout the reception.
Many blessings and positive experiences have arisen from these challenging times. Certainly, the highlight of the year has been embracing our diversity with even more pride; yet, while recognizing our differences of origin and even our different opinions, we know that none of it truly matters, because love binds us all and will carry us forward. So, here’s to the wedding mania to come, filled with an abundance of love!

“I’ve always admired the bravery it takes to share one of the most private and powerful moments of your life with all your guests,” says Kaci Mallat, wedding planner and owner of XOXO Weddings, who spends every week creating magic-filled weddings for her clients. Thus, when it came time for her to tie the knot, she and her fiancé, Bryan Johnson, shared the same vision: a moment for just the two of them. Kaci and Bryan chose an intimate elopement at Malibu’s Cielo Farms, with its sweeping views of the Santa Monica Mountains. While a light rain fell, their trusted team of vendors created an unforgettable experience. “I still had the dress, the bouquet, the ceremony and a wonderful photographer,” reminisces Kaci. “But we got to do it exactly the way we wanted. And I got to focus all my attention on my now husband.”

Wheat and Honey Events found creative ways to incorporate high school sweethearts Rhyan Cardoso and AJ Lopez’s Hispanic heritage into their wedding day. Picking the perfect venue was key, says Annette Kirkhuff of Wheat and Honey. Hummingbird Nest Ranch—with its Spanish-influenced architecture, towering palms and desert landscape—became the primary source of inspiration. Unique Floral Designs took its cue from Hummingbird’s verdant landscaping to create a richly textured floral design, which featured a lush free-form archway crafted with bursts of hot pink bougainvillea and fuchsia, peach dahlias, champagne roses, bleached ruscus, sea holly, dried palms and ample greenery. Details played a key role in bringing the Spanish theme alive, including individual Spanish tiles that doubled as place cards, handmade Spanish wooden fans and the hashtag #LaVidaLopez. Monogrammed white and gold maracas flanked every place setting, and as the couple entered the reception, the air was alive with the sounds of guests cheering and shaking their maracas. A live Spanish guitar performance provided the music throughout the cocktail hour, and guests danced the night away under a blanket of twinkling lights, maracas in hand. —Taylor

Seizing on her love of all things modern as well as her lifelong affinity for butterflies, bride Leah Hwung drew on her skills as a wedding planner to create a fabulously unique and playful design for her wedding to Justin Lee. Leah’s vision paired the couple’s love for art with their appreciation for the outdoors by bringing modern and abstract elements into a beautiful natural setting. Butterflies became the central theme, drawing on the transformation that butterflies undergo to become beautiful as an allegory for the twists and turns in the couple’s own love story. The bride collaborated with her Two Perfect Events team on a collection of hand-painted and sustainable butterfly art pieces featured throughout the celebration’s setting. These were combined with artful and painterly details, such as a giant yarn installation on the ceremony’s oak tree and sculptural ikebana floral arrangements on the reception tables, to create an elevated and ephemeral party atmosphere. —

Sometimes a wedding can be all fun and games. At Calamigos Ranch in Malibu, Sarah Tuberman and Ben Green transformed their shared love of board games into the theme of their elegant yet playful wedding. Everywhere guests looked, there were tasteful touches that highlighted the couple’s beloved pastime. The chuppah beneath which the ceremony took place teemed with roses in hues that echoed those of Monopoly game cards; look-alike cards served as place cards during the reception.
At the reception, guests could play an oversize game of Jenga in between rounds of cornhole, which had been customized with the couple’s names. A massive Connect Four board, with discs printed with “Sarah & Ben” in a retro font, was positioned on the dance floor. The couple’s cake was a creative masterpiece consisting of four layers, each one representing a different game. Decorating the dining tables were even more whimsical touches. Cootie catchers, which are usually found on elementary school playgrounds, were given a sophisticated revamp, serving as the menu for the evening. Geometric centerpieces with colorful streamers stood tall, featuring the same shades of roses as those in the chuppah and bringing a rainbow of color to the venue.

Mini-weddings make it easy to incorporate unexpected twists and adventurous moments. In lieu of a traditional cocktail hour between their intimate ceremony and dinner-party reception, newlyweds Jessica Martinson and Nick McClain took their closest friends and family out for two hours of sailing with Santa Barbara Sailing Center (@sbsailing). The newlyweds go on sailing excursions whenever they can, and the short guest list became an opportunity to treat their guests to one of their favorite ocean activities. Guests from Nick’s home state of Mississippi got a tour of the Santa Barbara coastline from the sea while sipping drinks and celebrating. —T.E.

“I grew up going whale watching on the Double Dolphin as a kid, and then as adult[s], we learned they do happy-hour cruises. What could be dreamier? We also knew our friends from Mississippi would love to see Santa Barbara at its best: from the water!” — Jessica Martinson, bride
Angelei shoes (@angeleishoesofficial) are made for the bride who wants to brush aside trends and embrace her unique style. “No two pairs are the same, [just as] no two women are the same,” says founder Marcie McGovern. Each pair of Angelei shoes is handmade in Italy and can be customized to the bride’s individual taste, down to the color and crystal arrangements. Plus, brides can stride down the aisle with purpose, knowing each line of shoes is associated with a different children’s charity. Angelei also recently launched its Walk the Walk campaign to open up opportunities for models from all over the world and with a diverse range of backgrounds. The design team dedicates time to researching new techniques and styles to ensure it stays ahead of the curve and provides distinctive flair. Angelei designers were the first to use the laser-cutting method that gives the shoes their idiosyncratic, intricate look. Their designs include sculptural shapes, gorgeous colors and fabrics and handcrafted details.
Best of all, Angelei makes every bride feel like an “it girl” as she walks down the aisle.
As McGovern puts it, “It’s about wearing authenticity, quality and class.” – S.H.

La Lomita Ranch is nestled in the heart of Edna Valley and encircled by the majestic Santa Lucia coastal mountain range. This former Arabian horse ranch turned enchanting hacienda-style bed and breakfast is composed of seven suites and a stand-alone house. In recognition of the region’s history, the property is filled with handcrafted Spanish-style furnishings and colorful Saltillo tiles. This style is carried over to the luxurious event spaces—The Pavilion, The Plaza, Oak Courtyard and The Terrace—where customized gatherings can be held overlooking sweeping vineyard and lake views. The crown jewel of the spaces, the newly built Pavilion offers an effortless indoor-outdoor flow beneath a red tileroofed building reminiscent of a Spanish mission.

At a microwedding, every detail is unique, everyone is a guest of honor, and the focus of the main event is on each other.
BY TAYLOR ELLSWORTHSMALL WEDDINGS ARE HAVING A BIG MOMENT. A customized, unique and experiential wedding has become the goal of many couples, who realize that hosting an intimate gathering means every moment is steeped in meaning, and no detail is spared. Scaling down the guest list gives couples the opportunity to simplify and eliminate stress without sacrificing style or luxury. Couples who opt for a microwedding or an elopement often find that what they sacrifice in party size, they gain in freedom. A short guest list allows more time to perfect every detail, maximize the budget and add more luxurious elements. When the guest list is composed of only your nearest and dearest, all the focus is on the you and your spouse-to-be. Venue options are nearly unlimited when size isn’t a factor, and the bride and groom are able to bond with every guest. Elegant backyard gatherings, high-end restaurant dinner parties, gorgeous coastal destination weddings, intimate garden parties—anything is possible, and when it comes to décor and style, the sky is the limit.
FROM THE MOMENT BRANDON QUIROZ PROPOSED TO KATIE MCKINNON, the Palm Springs couple knew they wanted to get married quickly, with minimum stress and maximum elegance. For Katie, the priority was making sure they didn’t lose focus on what mattered: each other. The couple worked closely with Shauna Timmons of Santa Barbara Elopement, who took the planning off their plate and brought their garden-party dreams to life in just eight weeks. With its abundance of natural flora and fauna, Kestrel Park in Santa Ynez was the ideal venue for their theme: to create an air of timelessness in a setting full of greenery with a bit of whimsy. After the two tied the knot in the venue’s wooded Sycamore Allée, guests enjoyed a cocktail hour in the garden, where they sipped drinks carefully crafted under Brandon’s expert bartender eye. Afterward, the newlyweds and their closest family members shared an intimate alfresco dinner in the courtyard, accompanied by live music.

When you plan a SMALL WEDDING , what’s most IMPORTANT to you comes to the FOREFRONT . Take time to consider what is actually ESSENTIAL to the day. For us, it was finding a good WEDDING PLANNER, which took all the stress and worry out of the day .

LAUREN SWANBERG AND AARON GWIN KNEW THAT A SMALL WEDDING WOULD PRESENT THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO GO BIG ON DETAILS. Putting an emphasis on making the day feel true to their unique styles and personalities, the couple enlisted Michelle Garibay Events to bring their dreams of intimate glamour to life. The sweeping views from the couple’s La Cresta backyard served as a picturesque backdrop to the ceremony and the reception.
Lauren and Aaron exchanged vows at the golden hour, with the Santa Ana Mountains in the background, as a small party of guests watched on from an intimate seating arrangement. To celebrate, the newlyweds and their guests took in the sunset as they ate dinner from their family-style tables, which were nestled beneath a lush canopy installation of tea roses, eucalyptus, other greenery and floating candles. Arrangements of pampas grass and a marquee monogram of the couple’s initials flanked the infinity pool, lending a contemporary touch to the dreamy atmosphere.

MICROWEDDINGS allow couples’ budgets to stretch much further. You can create an AMAZING and curated EXPERIENCE in an INTIMATE SETTING . SMALL EVENTS have reminded me what’s TRULY IMPORTANT: gathering with our CLOSEST FRIENDS and FAMILY, and being able to SLOW DOWN and actually spend TIME AND CELEBRATE with them. LESS STRESS, MORE ENJOYMENT!
“ Sharing a celebratory meal together in a small setting creates a very special experience. At Redbird and Vibiana, we FOCUS on the totality of the EXPERIENCE , so not only will the food be amazing, but the wine, cocktails, service and design will be top-notch as well. FOR SMALL WEDDINGS, we love to add an additional course or MINI CUSTOMIZED bottled cocktails, to HONOR special requests for foodie couples. ”
IT MADE PERFECT SENSE FOR FOODIES AND ADVENTURERS HANH NGUYEN AND KENNY MARTIN TO GET MARRIED AT REDBIRD IN DOWNTOWN LA. The venue’s urban garden ambiance echoed the greenhouse atmosphere at Openaire, the restaurant where the two first met, and Redbird’s renowned worldly cuisine served as a symbol of the merging of the couple’s two cultures. The events staff at Redbird served as the busy couple’s planning team, coordinating the florals, rentals and string quartet, as well as sourcing photographers. When a rare LA rainstorm threatened the alfresco dinner party, the Redbird team quickly relocated the reception and cocktail hour indoors to the East and West rooms, which overlook both the garden and the open kitchen. After an intimate ceremony in the garden under the cover of olive trees, the bride changed into a pink party dress for the celebration and the groom into a casual suit. Between the cocktail hour and dinner, the couple shared a private first dance on the patio as the string quartet played the first song of the evening. The night continued as the two enjoyed a memorable feast with their chosen few while the quartet played on.

IN AN ELEGANT ELOPEMENT CEREMONY, SARAH WILLIAMSON AND OLIVER FRIES SAID “I DO” AS THEY STOOD BAREFOOT ON THE BEACH, with ocean waves lapping on one side and the stately Rosewood Miramar Beach Hotel rising on the other. To prepare for the relaxed wedding day, the bride, the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom sipped champagne while they eased into a full morning of pampering. The moments of mother-daughter connection didn’t end there: The tennis bracelet Sarah wore was her mother’s, a piece given to her by her own mother on her wedding day; Oliver’s mother drew on her wisdom as a yoga teacher to officiate the heart-felt ceremony on that sun-drenched day. The couple tied the knot in front of a unique formation of driftwood and dried delphinium, and surrounded by their closest family members. While they opted not to have the traditional wedding party, Sarah and Oliver made one important exception for Oliver’s niece, who tossed petals onto the sand as the couple’s flower girl while their other niece, a newborn, gazed around, taking it all in at one of her very first family gatherings. After the ceremony, the couple and their families celebrated dinner-party-style at Lucky’s Steakhouse, where lush greenery, tea roses and fresh, peach-colored fruits covered nearly every surface.

FOCUS on your ultimate inner circle. Being surrounded by those lifelong besties will shower you in such sweet memories. Invest in a GREAT PHOTOGRAPHER and VIDEOGRAPHER. This may be a SMALL GATHERING , but it is still going to be a HUGE EXPERIENCE for you and your partner. To have every DETAIL CAPTURED meticulously will be an incredible record for your new chapter in life. ”
“I LOVE going over the top with tablescapes for intimate weddings by MIXING RENTALS with familial china, crystal and serving ware. Creating NEW MEMORIES while surrounded by FAMILY HEIRLOOMS can bring even greater meaning to your BIG DAY.”
KELLY TRUEBLOOD AND DANNY REES PROVED THAT YOU CAN STILL DO SMALL WEDDINGS WITH IMPRESSIVE STYLE when the couple held an elegant ceremony below the stained-glass windows of Kelly’s home church in La Cañada Flintridge, where the bride’s parents once tied the knot. The formal ceremony was full of meaningful details, such as the groom’s cuff links, which matched the bride’s Tiffany necklace. To celebrate, the newlyweds took a classic vintage getaway car to Kelly’s parents’ home, where they swapped their formal attire for garden-party looks. The backyard fete had all the elements of a classic wedding reception—including a master of ceremonies, a DJ, a giant charcuterie board and monogrammed M&Ms—while retaining the intimacy of a backyard affair. The outdoor space was transformed into a Tuscan-inspired tableau in which blue-and-white china plates were paired with the mother of the bride’s own antique serving ware; sunny pops of yellow roses brought warmth to every corner, and string lights twinkled overhead. Guests enjoyed a casual cocktail hour followed by a threecourse dinner, and the couple’s first dance to Frank Sinatra’s “The Way You Look Tonight” kicked off an all-night dance party.

KRIEGER (@kriegerthedj) has been awarded California Wedding Day’s title of Best DJ in LA for three years because he is an expert in bringing events of all sizes to life with music. While many elements of wedding planning become simpler with a shorter guest list, the job of the DJ does not.
HIRE AN EXPERIENCED PRO. “Most people prefer to get lost in the crowd, but at a small wedding, that’s not an option. Your DJ will need to read the room closely, because if five people don’t like a song, that might be half the dance floor.”
COMMUNICATION IS KEY. “The vibe at a microwedding can change quickly, so make sure your DJ understands what’s most important to you, and that you trust them to make decisions in the moment to achieve your vision.”
CONSIDER SAFETY. “Keep in mind that your DJ should take extra steps to protect themselves and guests by bringing things like extra mics to sanitize between toasts.”
“OUR FAMILIES WERE ON THE DANCE FLOOR ALL NIGHT WITH MASKS AND ALL AND EVEN THE KIDS WERE DANCING UP A STORM. KRIEGER WAS WILLING TO STAY LONGER FOR US WHEN IT WAS CLEAR WE DIDN’T WANT THE NIGHT TO END. ” —Melanie Faessler, bride

REFINED BLUES AND ELEGANT BLUSHES CREATE AN ETHEREAL SETTING IN THE SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS.

After two decades of designing enchanted weddings in the South, wedding planner Anita Kanellis of AK Brides has brought her charm and expertise to Los Angeles. Inspired by Southern California’s sparkling sea, Kanellis incorporated the outdoors and ocean hues in this particular design. “My brand is based on light and bright vibes, with pink and gray as the main color inspiration,” explains Kanellis. “In this design, I wanted to bring in another dimension of color and focus on soft blue tones.” The result is a dainty setting that evokes romance with every detail.
The design features whispers of blue and blush to create a bold visage against the natural backdrop. Organic, carefree floral arrangements featuring hydrangea, ranunculus, roses, cosmos and scabiosa add romance. Opposite page: Delicate hand-sketched invitations evoke a romantic tone. Each corresponding detail embraces this subtle sensibility, including beautifully designed dessert cookies, an ethereal ceremony setting and the abundant bouquet of ruffled blooms and delicate textured details.

Sweetwater Cocktails concocted The Peach Blossom, a drink made of gin, lemon juice and peach juice with a touch of honey liqueur; a twist on the old fashioned, using Cointreau and orange blossom honey. 2-4. Executive chef Julio Castorena of Très L.A. Catering created a surf-and-turf-inspired menu featuring a seared sea scallop salad garnished with white and green asparagus, roasted citron confit and a blue spirulina “coral” crouton; smoked salmon with kaffir lime mousse, new-potato rösti and black caviar; Châteaubriand pan-roasted with truffles and accompanied by fennel and lemon pousseline, spicy paprika fondant potatoes finished with a truffle and fig demi-glace.

Lauren Rae Levy and Marcel Vigneron’s dreamy wedding at Hummingbird Nest Ranch was straight out of a storybook. Lauren, a stylist, and Marcel, a renowned chef, wanted their celebration to be close to their home base in Los Angeles yet far enough removed to still feel they were at one with nature. A custom door served as a portal into the couple’s very own fairy tale where guests were greeted by a “unicorn” with golden hooves before the ceremony started. Inspired by fashion week, the ceremony aisle was raised and lined with pampas grass; Lauren walked down her own runway in a strapless Galia Lahav ball gown. Representing eternity, circles were used as a motif throughout the wedding, from the invitations to the ceremony’s round altar. To give the ceremony a personal touch, guests were asked beforehand to provide a word of intention. The individual words they chose were then engraved on circular bracelets and placed at their seats. Given Marcel’s profession, gastronomy took center stage during the reception, with the couple working with Très LA Catering to craft the perfect menu. Later, guests were surprised with the Blast Ice Cream food truck. Toward the end of the night, Lauren, who is also a musician, slipped into a long-sleeved Galia Lahav gown and took to the stage, surprising Marcel with her own rendition of Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best.”

Teresa and John Tran threw the glamorous wedding of their dreams at Vibiana in downtown Los Angeles. The Catholic ceremony took place in front of the former cathedral’s striking white marble altar. Teresa said her vows in a long-sleeved Ines Di Santo gown that featured semitransparent lace through the bodice and sleeves, and an opaque skirt that hugged her figure from the waist down. For his part, John kept his look modern yet classic, wearing a tuxedo that featured white pin dots covering his blue jacket. The black-tie ceremony transitioned into the reception as the lighting shifted from the romantic blush pink to a deep purple that indicated the partying to come. White roses spilled from vases and onto the dining tables, with gold leaves scattered below the buds, complementing the gold dining chairs. John and Teresa made their mark on the dance floor in more ways than one. A monogram designed by the couple was emblazoned on the floor as the two performed their choreographed first dance. Though John is a dentist, sweet treats were abundant throughout. Lemon meringue tarts, chai-tea doughnuts and more were offered, along with the couple’s signature “Penicillin” cocktail, a nod to Teresa’s work as pharmacist. As the evening came to a close, it was clear that their wedding foreshadowed a happy life for Teresa and John.

Susan Keng and Arthur Matiossian took the meaning of Valentine’s Day to heart, committing to love one another forever on the day after the holiday at the Fairmont Miramar. A deep and vibrant palette of rich plum, ruby and violet enhanced the romantic atmosphere. As guests took their seats, they were greeted by a string quartet and invited to indulge in champagne cocktails, to be sipped throughout the ceremony. Towering gold urns bearing dramatic bouquets of deep pink, bright purple and magenta flowers flanked the striking fig tree that served as the backdrop to the couple’s exchange of vows. The bridal party’s bouquets and boutonnieres echoed the other jewel tones. In stunning contrast, Susan carried a crisp white arrangement that paired perfectly with the flora on Arthur’s lapel. Their florist, Eddie Zaratsian, used flower petals in the same hues to carpet the aisle, down which Susan walked in a stunning custom cap-sleeve Lazaro dress. The bridal gown designer, Lazaro Perez, who is also a friend of the bride, helped her get ready, ensuring she looked perfect. After the ceremony, guests sat down to dine on a multicourse meal before heading to the dance floor. Gracing their tables and the rest of the ballroom were sumptuous floral arrangements that matched those from the ceremony. The couple’s cake was a sleek white, four-layer masterpiece with hand-painted red peonies serving as pops of color. Nods to the couple’s heritages could be seen throughout the reception. Armenian and Puerto Rican music paid homage to Arthur’s family, while Susan ended the night wearing a Chinese qipao, which also served as her “something borrowed,” from her sister.

Tying the knot at the Italianate Villa Loriana, Peyton and Brennan brought their Game of Thrones–inspired celebration to life. The dreamy castle perfectly suited the romantic, moody tone they aspired to create. Following an ethereal ceremony, guests made their way to the indoor reception, which featured long farm-style tables adorned with black velvet linens, black geodes serving as table numbers and centerpieces featuring gold compotes filled with deep red flowers. Turmeric yellow and black candles lined the tables to match the gorgeous brass candelabra at the king and queen’s table, where the couple sat. A love letter scroll cascading over the top of the table perfectly embodied the ancient atmosphere. The drama extended to their black cake, which featured gold details and fondant sculpted into flowers. Personal touches were not lost in the medieval wonderland. Peyton and Brennan began their morning by exchanging letters, as well as a journal Peyton began writing for her future husband when she was 16. Having spent part of their relationship far away from one another, Peyton and Brennan framed airline tickets to hark back to their numerous flights. In a nod to the couple’s Texas A&M alma mater, party favors were cookies in the shape of both Texas and California.

Since meeting on a professional hip-hop dance team, Rachel and Jeffrey have danced their way through some epic travel and a long-distance relationship. Jeffrey proposed seven years after they met, on a private terrace in New York City—complete with a striking view of the Empire State Building. The concrete jungle became the theme for their nuptials, with the theater show Sleep No More inspiring their colorful aesthetic. Rachel centered her color scheme on burgundy peonies, with the gorgeous flower featured in her bouquet, the boutonnieres and the reception table centerpieces. The Ebell Long Beach served as the perfect location for their vibrant wedding, with the couple tying the knot underneath an altar covered in lush greenery and sweeping pink fabric. Working with the picturesque décor, the couple made the night as personalized as possible. Rachel hand-painted escort cards, and guests were given glass mugs inscribed with their names. Guests also could sign and send New York postcards in place of a guest book. The reception included watercolor portraits painted on-site, custom-made photo-booth props ranging from the Empire State Building to Backstreet Boys album covers, and made-to-order boba tea and late-night Filipino-inspired snacks of tosilog and sisig burritos. Of course, dancing was the main highlight of the night. Rachel and Jeffrey made a showstopping grand entrance flanked by their dance team. To honor their Filipino heritage, they included a money dance, or sabitan ng pera, with festive money crowns created by Rachel’s mom. Later in the evening, Rachel switched out the traditional father-daughter dance for a cha-cha with her momma. “It was more than just honoring our love and new journey,” says Rachel. “It was a celebration of all the amazing relationships in our lives.”

Married: ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE CATHOLIC CHURCH, WESTLAKE VILLAGE
Celebrated: SHERWOOD COUNTRY CLUB, THOUSAND OAKS Date: JULY 27, 2019
Melissa Levinsohn and Branden Casillas envisioned an ethereal, sophisticated celebration at the Sherwood Country Club. From the moment guests received their invitations, it was clear that the couple’s nuptials were going to be something special: The invitations were sent in cream-colored, upholstered boxes with jeweled gold brooches fastened to the outside. Melissa’s look was just as sumptuous as she made her way down the aisle at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church in a sweeping ball gown with a lace bodice and floor-length veil that draped elegantly behind her. Her bouquet was dichromatic, teeming with white roses and orchids and pops of greenery. Melissa’s parents live in Lake Sherwood, and Branden’s parents also are from the area, so it was the perfect locale for the family-oriented pair. White carpet was installed in the ballroom of the country club to complement the heavenly white and gold atmosphere of the reception. A spectacular flower wall resembling a magnified version of Melissa’s bouquet was positioned behind the sweetheart table. The couple’s cake was adorned with gold pearls as well as the brooch that guests first saw in their invitations. A gold wreath encircling Melissa’s and Branden’s initials was emblazoned on the white dance floor. To pay homage to the couple’s Spanish heritage, the band Rembrandt performed Latino music, and a cigar roller was at the ready on the patio. As guests departed, they were handed miniature pies from Winston Pies in Brentwood.

When it came time for wedding photographer Angelica Valiton to tie the knot with her beloved Richard Zupancic, she already had a step up on the wedding planning, having witnessed her share of weddings. Since the couple had spent the past three years watching beach sunsets, it was only fitting for them to wed at the stunning Bel-Air Bay Club, with the ocean sparkling in the background. Angelica envisioned a romantic garden aesthetic to complement the Bay Club’s newly renovated space. A blend of warm tones and light-colored woods accomplished this vision perfectly. Her lace gown paired beautifully with the pink bridesmaids’ dresses and the peach florals decorating the altar, centerpieces and cake, while palm trees brought the coastal charm. Their wedding date was particularly sentimental as it was the birthday of Angelica’s grandma and the day before the birthday of Kevin’s grandma. Because of those special days, the couple wanted to focus the celebration on their loved ones. Inspired by one of her clients’ weddings, Angelica hung wind chimes at their ceremony to remember those who could not attend. “Every time the wind blew and they chimed… I immediately felt their presence,” says Angelica. Their wedding party included others among their nearest and dearest. Angelica’s brother served as the officiant, and Angelica’s best friend, Jenny Quicksall, pulled double duty as maid of honor and wedding photographer. In a gesture of unity, the couple set up a table dedicated to each family’s wedding photos. “At the end of the day, all we truly cared about was that our loved ones were with us, celebrating our love and our family,” notes Angelica. While the guests prepped for the couple’s grand exit, the bride and groom shared a private last dance to Frank Sinatra’s “The Way You Look Tonight,” allowing the two of them to drink in the last moments of their big day together.

Amanda Murphy and John Hartsock hopped a plane in Pittsburgh and landed in Lake Tahoe to celebrate their marriage with a weekend getaway for friends and family. Amanda and John were fated to end up together. They first crossed paths when they were 5 years old on the first day of kindergarten. Thirteen years later, they crossed paths again during their freshman orientation at the University of Pittsburgh. From there, it became clear they were meant to be together. The two share a love of national parks and have visited 14 to date, with plans to eventually make their way to all of them. Fittingly, the calming presence of nature permeated their wedding, with grounding hues of green scattered throughout the décor. The bridesmaids wore dusty-moss-colored gowns, which complemented the succulents in their bouquets as well as the groomsmen’s ties. And, of course, the surrounding landscape of Lake Tahoe lent itself fully to the charming rustic atmosphere. The couple’s outdoor ceremony took place beneath an arbor so bedecked in flora, it looked like Mother Nature placed it there herself. A string trio performed in person as guests watched Amanda waltz down the aisle in her lacy, sleeveless A-line gown and sparkly Kate Spade Keds. The reception was a forested dreamscape. Twinkling lights and grand floral arrangements hung from the ceiling. Guests dined on s’mores while seated at pinecone-strewn tables that were also decorated with national-park-inspired place cards. The night ended with a bang—quite literally—as dazzling fireworks illuminated the night sky while the newlyweds looked on.

BY SHANNON (weddingsbyshannon.com)Kelsey Laudi and Justin Johnson’s wedding at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club harked back to Palm Springs’ mid-century heyday. Their wish for a laid-back party atmosphere was granted in full by the hotel’s cool and relaxed aesthetic. Kelsey walked down the aisle in a fitted gown with a plunging neck. The lace panels at the base of her skirt fluttered behind her as she carried her bouquet, which teemed with greenery and white anemones. Justin was waiting for her, wearing a bolo tie that injected personality into his otherwise traditional tuxedo. The couple put a unique, modern twist on their altar by using a large diamond-shaped metal frame as the backdrop to their vows. As guests made their way to the reception, they passed a display of photos of loved ones who have passed away, which was accompanied by the message “Wish you were here” engraved on a wooden plaque. The indoors and outdoors were brought together by raising the glass garage-style doors of Ace’s Commune event space, which open to the pool deck framing the circular pool. Guests dined at long tables draped in gray linens and with greenery and candles running down the center. As the sun set, twinkling lights came to life, illuminating the warm night and reflecting off the still surface of the pool as the party came to a close.

A timeless palette of black and white set the stage for the union of Alex Kramer and Derek Boeckelmann at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles. They loved the idea of combining the unique setting of the museum’s Dinosaur Hall with a classic and elegant aesthetic. Every detail was thoughtful, from the contrast of Alex’s white tuxedo jacket against Derek’s black tux to the white flower-embellished chuppah. During the cocktail hour, guests perused the dinosaur and gem exhibits. At the reception, white flowers presented a beautiful contrast against the museum exhibits; and olive branches accented the hydrangea-and-rose centerpieces, were tucked into napkins and adorned the traditional three-tiered white wedding cake. Alex incorporated his love of doughnuts into the celebration with a doughnut tower, and the couple also gave a nod to their pet snake by naming one of their signature drinks “The Howling Ricky.” (Ricky also made an appearance in the photos of the couple getting ready before the ceremony.) Starting the dance party with a traditional hora, the grooms then danced with their mothers for a mother-son dance, switching moms halfway through the song in a moving gesture that symbolized their newly merged families. But one of the night’s biggest highlights was the nontraditional groom bouquet toss, which featured specially created bouquets that the husbands tossed from opposite corners of the dance floor to the waiting singles gathered in the center.

Married and celebrated: FÊTE THE VENUE, COSTA MESA
Date: FEBRUARY 1, 2020
Sana and Shanel Chand put a contemporary spin on their traditional Indian wedding at Fête the Venue in Costa Mesa. The two were college sweethearts, having met when they were students at the University of California–Riverside. Years later, Shanel was on one knee at the incredible Royal Botanic Gardens in Madrid, asking Sana to marry him. She said “yes”—and the rest is history. As with most Indian weddings, the guest list was not small, running to more than 400. Fête the Venue’s spacious reception room allowed for all of the couple’s friends and family to join in the merriment. When the couple first saw their reception space, they were stunned by the plethora of candles and flowers, which suited the cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere perfectly. Wanting to avoid anything too formal or traditional, Sana opted for a sleek, modern look for their nuptials. A hexagon altar, draped with peach and white flowers, stood behind the couple during their ceremony. The bride and groom wore intricately embroidered matching outfits, which were in the same color family as the flowers that were featured throughout the celebration. The elegantly minimalist décor carried through into the reception. The couple’s cake mimicked their altar’s hexagonal shape and was meticulously decorated to resemble marble. Guests enjoyed Time After Time Events’ boba station between their spins on the dance floor, as well as delicious bites from Manohar’s Delhi Palace.

Not even an unexpected move across the pond could stop Natalia Walicki and John Gilkey from throwing the wedding of their dreams at Villa & Vine in Santa Barbara. The bride and groom attended California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo and the University of California–Santa Barbara, respectively, so they knew they wanted to tie the knot somewhere near their alma maters. However, a month after booking their venue, John’s work uprooted the couple and took them to London. Despite being thousands of miles away, they were still able to orchestrate their wedding into a perfect symphony with the help of their planner and florist, Burlap & Bordeaux. The rich Spanish architecture of Villa & Vine provided a stunning backdrop for the affair. The couple wanted their celebration to feel like one large dinner party with their closest friends and family—many of whom they hadn’t seen since their move to the U.K. Long tables were arranged in a square configuration in the courtyard, with arrangements of white roses and greenery resting on top of the tables. Verdant meandering vines grew along the arcade that bordered the courtyard, the deep green providing contrast against the dusty powder blue curtains framing the arches. Natalia and John hit the dance floor for their final spin, dancing to Tony Bennett’s “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” recalling memories of when John proposed to Natalia under the Golden Gate Bridge.

Maggie and Nick Shepard gathered their friends and family for a summer-camp-style wedding on the shore of Silver Lake in the Sierra Nevada. The Kit Carson Lodge served as the perfect property for guests to access canoes, paddleboards and hiking trails, and their assigned cabins added to the atmosphere of a summer camp for grown-ups. Maggie’s lace gown perfectly matched the woodsy setting as she and Nick exchanged vows surrounded by towering trees. After the ceremony, while the guests headed to the reception, Maggie and Nick spent some time alone on the lake before making a grand entrance by canoe. To make that entrance, they had Maggie’s stepfather, brother, best friend and two of Nick’s closest friends push their canoe into the lake. “The metaphor of being launched into the water by these people we had selected was not lost on us,” says Maggie. “It is one of my favorite memories of the wedding.” Their friends and family banded together to make all the finer details shine. To prepare for the falling temperatures at night, Maggie’s aunt scoured thrift shops for flannel shirts, which guests could grab throughout the evening and take home. Maggie’s mom and stepdad, who own a farm in Kansas, packaged jars of honey embellished with the couple’s names and the phrase “Meant to bee,” which were placed at each table setting. No camp festivities would be complete without music. To commemorate Maggie’s background with the Girl Scouts, her family played “A Boy and a Girl in a Little Canoe” at the rehearsal dinner—before they even knew about the couple’s canoe plans. Continuing their tradition of personalizing popular songs at their weddings, Nick’s friends sang a rendition of “The Space Cowboy” by the Steve Miller Band, complete with references to the couple’s kitten and Sacramento home. As they danced the night away in cozy flannels, Maggie and Nick brought summer to a close by celebrating their new beginning.

Married and celebrated: NOBU MALIBU Date: NOVEMBER 11, 2019
Valeria Sokolova and Jon Berkland tied the knot at Nobu Malibu, with the soothing sound of waves and a stunning sunset in the background. As friends and family gathered for the destination wedding, they were greeted by a gentleman in a top hat and a burlesque dancer adorned with pearls and jewels. Valeria looked ethereal in her lace off-the-shoulder Zuhair Murad gown as she and Jon exchanged vows in front of an enchanting flower-draped altar. Blossoms also graced the reception, where a white, pink and green floral wall created the perfect backdrop for photos on the balcony overlooking the sea. Votive lanterns hung with white wisteria and greenery from the ceiling to create a dreamy atmosphere for the celebration. Valeria switched her look for the reception, wearing a showstopping short dress covered in jewels and feathers that swayed in the ocean breeze. Soft pink glassware brought a soft beauty to the tables, where guests enjoyed Nobu’s famed sushi dishes. Charming chopsticks customized with the couple’s names were given to guests as favors. As Valeria and Jon cut their three-tier cake, frosted with pearls and flowers, the ocean breeze wafted romance through this perfect night.
