THE LOWLANDS WELCOMED the Minnesota wedding community to celebrate the Spring / Summer ’24 issue release. The modern building was complete with a vibrant color palette, architectural details and bright florals, adhering to the bold theme designed and planned by de Vasco’s Daughters Weddings & Event Design.

The space was breathtaking with lush flowers designed and provided by Ergo Floral, contemporary rentals by Haven & Gather and signage by Epitome Papers. Wedding pros sipped Chankaska Creek wine, enjoyed delectable bites from Food Gallery Catering and Crave Catering while being serenaded by the sweet sounds of Yunior Saxo. Paint My Wedding Day offered a fun, interactive activity with guests adding elements to the painting throughout the event. INSPIRATION FOR THE NEARLY WED

Michaelene and Harry tied the knot in an ethereal backyard wedding at their home on Lake Minnetonka. A professional ballerina and former Miss Minnesota, Michaelene’s dream of performing a beautifully choreographed first dance came to light as the couple twirled beneath a sailcloth tent to “Lover” by Taylor Swift. EMERALD CITY

“We were very inspired by texture and warmth,” Emily Chesky of Emily Grace Cakes shares about the inspiration for this shoot that paints a picture of an idyllic indoor event amidst the flurries of February snow. Classic invitations with sophisticated details, including a velvet bow and a golden wax seal, set the stage.

The couple evoked Old Hollywood with the groom electing a tried-andtrue black tuxedo with a pop of greenery on his lapel, and the bride in a breathtaking ballgown complemented by a sweet, low bun and the ideal emerald addition: sparkling nail designs. A floral three-tier ceremony “arch” set against an exposed brick wall married natural with industrial, while a decadent dessert table paired vintage décor with modern, bite-sized treats.

The centerpiece, a two-tiered white Lambeth cake, conjured images of a bygone era with its attention to detail and over-piping and matched the gold votives and candelabra. Contemporary nibbles ranging from cookies to cupcakes to red velvet “shooters” yielded a variety of selections for a range of preferences. A regal velvet cloth in a shimmering deep green artfully tied the tablescape together.

“We wanted to use the dark velvet linens, lights and abundance of candles to achieve an intimate and romantic feel—to make the room feel warm amid the winter atmosphere,” Chesky says. Megan Simpson Teeter

AN ARTFELT WEDDING

Intentional details and one-of-a-kind design elements painted a beautiful wedding day for Yuni Park and Tony Cui. As a landscape designer, bride Yuni knew she wanted to incorporate a unique perspective into their celebration to reflect the couple’s shared interest in art. After attending numerous art fairs and museums, the Weisman Art Museum was their choice as the ideal canvas for the couple’s artful vision, and paid homage to Tony’s undergrad and medical degrees from the University of Minnesota. With help from Dos Goats Plans and Rose Imaginative, their wedding was a true work of art. In lieu of a linear aisle, a long, swirl-patterned aisle with stunning blooms decorated the gallery along with seats at different angles to ensure excellent views. An array of colorful florals, tulle, leaves and grand allium created unexpected textures in the floral arrangements throughout the design. Cocktail hour was another brainchild of Yuni’s design background, with paper lanterns hanging above. “The vertical elements helped create a more enclosed and celebratory atmosphere,” Yuni said. The pair believes that being creative, adaptive and trusting your wedding professionals are key to successful wedding planning. “It was helpful to fully trust the advice of wedding planners and vendors rather than attempting to micromanage,” said the couple. “Vendors are experts in their fields, and open communication about the vision for the wedding helped turn our dream wedding into reality.” — Sydney Stevens

TREASURE TROVE

Amy Stockhaus was craving a creative outlet, so she decided to start Rileyhaus, a visual diary of her own inspiration.

Her passion project transformed into a luxurious yet sustainable jewelry business when her parents moved out of her childhood home, with her mom gifting Stockhaus a plethora of old jewelry in 2022. “Much of it was mismatched, broken, and out of style,” she says. “It became fun to reimagine those pieces. I gave them a new story with a new life and immediately fell in love. When I began exploring design, it felt like a fire was lit within me.”

Rileyhaus’s avant-garde and soulful collections are influenced by authenticity, character, art, the past, exploration and emotion. “My designs embrace historic, artisanal elements while offering a new meaningful story,” Stockhaus said.

Her made-to-order accessories are truly a labor of love. In anticipation of her upcoming collection, “Lume Di Candela,” Stockhaus immersed herself in months of studying the technique of shaping glass through flame and mastered the complex art of flame-blowing to create every glass flower herself. “I really want people to feel special when they wear my work,” she says.

FOREVER LINKED

Nothing says forever quite like a piece of permanent jewelry. Seeking a fun way to connect with their community and create easy and accessible jewelry, best friends Jennie Sutliffe and Rachel Theede established Endless August LLC (@endlessaugustllc) in January of 2023. “We knew there were women out there like us who enjoyed jewelry, but not the clasps that came with them,” Theede said.

The dynamic duo has taken St. Cloud and surrounding areas by storm with their luxe, yet affordable, pieces. Offering rings, bracelets, anklets and necklaces with a variety of chain types and customizable charms, the possibilities for creativity are endless. Get linked with your besties at the bachelorette party or bridal shower, or offer an item as a sweet gift to your bridal party the morning of the celebration. Another option is to feature Endless August at the wedding reception, leaving guests with a wedding favor that will last a lifetime.

“There are so many ways couples can utilize our pieces,” Sutliffe said. “Incorporate colors from your wedding, a themed charm, special meanings or inscribed names.” Permanent jewelry not only serves as a cute accessory but acts as a constant reminder of a core memory, the perfect keepsake for a special moment in time. —Sydney Stevens

STRIKE A POSE

It started when she was looking for a baby photo for her high school yearbook. Now, it’s a growing business for Nadirah Jama, owner of Pose (@pose_mn) photo booth service.

Finding that photo “sparked my interest in capturing moments, particularly those of my siblings, as I realized the significance of preserving memories through photography,” Jama says.

Jama notes that her Twin Cities-based business adds a new element to the usual array of wedding vendors. “Couples who pick me are usually pretty stoked to see someone like me in the mix, especially as a woman of color,” she says. “Being a Muslim, I’ve noticed a lot of Muslim women wanting cultural weddings, but struggling to find vendors who get it. That’s where I come in, ensuring their expectations are met—and blown away.”

Another big reason she’s in the field is to support brides who opt for all-women weddings, she says. “It’s often tough for them to find a female photographer who understands their vision. That’s where my photo booth shines, creating memories these brides truly love.” The best part of working at those weddings, she says, is the gratitude of the brides.

She got her break at an open house for a clinic in Minneapolis. Compliments began flowing in. “I remember one of the guests even telling her daughter to hurry up before we shut down our booth to get her photo taken,” she recalls. “It was the best feeling ever!”

Word spread, and now, she says, “every time someone takes a picture with my photo booth, it’s a hit.” Part of that is because of “an open, fun-loving nature, so making people comfortable comes naturally,” she says. “Sometimes I even step in front of the lens to encourage [camera-shy clients] to join in on the fun.”

Along with props, frames and various filters, Pose offers a glam filter, which Jama says transforms photos into elegant black-and-white images against a sleek white or black backdrop. “It’s a popular choice for guests looking to add a touch of sophistication and glamour to their photos.”

Heading into her second year running Pose, three of her sisters now contribute to the operation, and she’s grateful for their support. “They’re integral to my team, stepping in to assist during events and ensuring everything runs seamlessly, even when I can’t be physically present,” she says. “Their dedication and willingness to learn, whether it’s creating templates or perfectly matching designs to the couple’s vision, have been invaluable.”

While her parents initially had some reservations about her chosen career, “witnessing the growth and potential of my business has led them to support me, which means the world to me,” she says.

Besides recognizing the importance of recording a special moment for couples, families and guests, Jama has an entrepreneur’s heart, a quality she wanted to share. “I started Pose as a way to give my younger sisters a taste of entrepreneurship,” she says.

“I enjoyed seeing their eagerness to learn, and I wanted them to be as hands-on as possible. Moreover, I used Pose as an opportunity to create something meaningful together as a family.” — Sherri Hildebrandt

THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

INCORPORATING CULTURES INTO A BEAUTIFUL CELEBRATION OF LOVE

A love story that began in Omaha resulted in a simple, intimate wedding in Italy—and a second one in St. Paul. Erin Hassanzadeh and Eric Nelson met when Eric was in Omaha for a Berkshire Hathaway conference that Erin, a TV news reporter, was covering. One coffee date led to three years of long-distance dating and many adventures. It culminated when the couple chose to live out their dreams by having the best of both worlds: first, a ceremony at a private villa in Narni, Italy, with their mothers, siblings and a few friends; then a month later, a larger, more traditional ceremony at the historic St. Paul College Club.

The couple’s Italian wedding was minimalist, the palette a dreamy white and cream Italian-chic haze, with floral notes, olive branches and rosemary from the property, as well as hints of blue in the décor the bride brought from home. Flowers were purchased at the local market and a blueberry lemon cake made by the bride’s sister were special touches. “The weeklong stay in Italy with those closest to us was an absolute once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Erin says.

Their wedding in St. Paul was replete with the hues reminiscent of a sunset over the red rocks in Sedona, Arizona, where the couple got engaged. Amid the palette of oranges and pinks was a significant blue addition—Erin’s grandma’s blue VW Super Beetle. With a nod to her Persian heritage, the couple incorporated a sofreh display table at the altar with symbolic displays pertaining to wishes for a beautiful life together during the ceremony, with a handout explaining the various items. Erin enthusiastically urges couples to go for the wedding they want. “It’s beautiful to bring a vision to life,” she says. “It can be simple, it can be rooted in feelings and friends and wanting closeness. Take time and make space in your own wedding planning to live out the dreams in your head.”

While planning the big day, your focus is mainly on event details, guest list and your ensemble. However, for anyone who has decided to change their name post-wedding, the “adventure” continues long after the vendors have been tipped and the relatives have departed. Going into the name change process for the first time, many newlyweds (understandably) have no idea what to expect. Enter Colie Christensen, founder of NewlyNamed, a name change kit service designed to make officiating your new last name a breeze.

It’s important to begin by updating your name with the Social Security Administration (SSA) by filling out Form SS-5, the application for a new social security card (can be done by mail or online). This step is foundational because your name officially and legally changes after it’s updated with the SSA and the IRS, making it possible to change your name everywhere else. However, it’s important to mention that even though your name is changed in the SSA’s system, you’ll still need to update it everywhere else to match.

“Once your name is updated with the SSA, other entities can reference it to confirm your new legal name,” explains Colie. This sets the stage for the next steps in the name change process. After updating your name with the SSA, the following locations typically require attention:

IRS: Changing your name with SSA will update your name with the Internal Revenue Service, however, it’s pertinent to note that you should wait about 10-14 days after you change your name with the SSA to file your tax return!

U.S. PASSPORT: Apply for a new passport with your updated name. This usually requires submitting Form DS-11 along with supporting documents like your marriage certificate and current passport.

DRIVER’S LICENSE: In the state of Minnesota, you’re required to apply for a new driver’s license within 30 days of legally changing your name with the Social Security office. The state DMV recommends that you pre-apply for a driver’s license to reduce the time you spend at the DMV office. Visit dps.mn.gov

VOTER REGISTRATION: Update your registration at mnvotes.sos.mn.gov/voterregistration.

VEHICLE TITLE REGISTRATION: To change your name on your vehicle’s registration in Minnesota, you must do it in person at a DVS Deputy Registrar Office. You’ll need your marriage certificate and your ID to complete the process.. Visit dps.mn.gov to learn more.

PROFESSIONAL LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS: If you hold any professional licenses or certifications, such as a nursing license or teaching certificate, notify the issuing authority of your name change.

PERSONAL ACCOUNTS: Update your name with all personal accounts, including banks, credit unions, credit cards, investment accounts, frequent flyer programs and travel programs like TSA PreCheck and Global Entry.

PRETTY POSIES MEET CLEAN LINES FOR A MODERN TAKE ON A BYGONE ERA

Victorian fashion serves as the muse for this botanical design dreamed up by Jessica St. George of Everworth Photography at The Lowlands in St. Paul. “The luxury dresses from that era had vibrant blues and big flowy skirts,” says St. George. “I wanted the elegance and decadence of the 1880s to be shown in a modern aesthetic.” With this romantic concept under their corset, the team set out to create a design fit for a modern-day Jane Eyre. The florals evoke a verdant Victorian garden with lush arrangements of creamy white punctuated with cerulean blue. Dainty, flower-patterned blue china adds to the effect while geometric shelving is adorned with simple blooms to soften the industrial space. For the ceremony, soft whimsical draping across the ceiling envelopes the scene. The space is transformed into a verdant scape with the addition of abundant garlands tangled among the draping.

“The cake is the showstopper of the room,” says St. George. “The four tiers are wrapped in luxurious iridescent sheets layered on top of each other to emulate the pairing of structure with whimsical.” Delicate flower buds complete the confection.

INSPIRED BY A LOVE OF THE OUTDOORS, A LUXURIOUS FOREST GROWS INDOORS AT THE HUTTON HOUSE

“Our mutual love of adventure and all things outdoors inspired the outdoor elegance that was our wedding,” says Kimberly Clayton about her winter wonderland wedding to Matthew McKay on February 10. The crisp white venue was the ideal backdrop for a rich palette of warm neutral tones and evergreens accented by birch trees and metallics. Textural touches were woven throughout the day, from pinecones in Kimberly’s bouquet and Matthew’s boutonnière to velvet napkins and fur throw pillows.

Instead of a traditional gift for our guests, we planted trees through a Vermont-based nonprofit in each of their names. This gift was detailed on the back of each menu.

Matthew and Kimberly radiated outdoor vibes with their wedding attire. Kim’s Sassi Holford gown featured hand-stitched bows that sparkled like tiny snowflakes when she twirled; Milbern Clothing Co. tailored a green velvet coat with black lapels for Matthew.

The Hutton House in Medicine Lake was transformed into a forest with pine and birch trees, evergreen centerpieces, moss runners and handmade garlands draped across the ceiling. Designer Krista Crawford of de Vasco’s Daughters was the key to making this concept a reality. “Matt and I did have most of our vendors selected and décor envisioned; Krista fine-tuned it,” Kimberly says. “She found ways to maintain both the adventure side and the eloquent love Matt and I have for each other.” With only knowing us for a few months, Krista put together an event that spoke to the heart and soul of us and our guests.”

Much of the décor was a family affair, with birch trees imported from the families’ properties—Matthew’s in northern Minnesota and Kimberly’s in western Wisconsin. The pine trees came from a longtime family friend who owns Krueger Tree Farm. Another close family friend created the evergreen tabletop arrangements.

The couple’s adventures led them to Antarctica, where Matthew proposed on Half Moon Island among waddling chinstrap penguins. “These little feathered friends ended up being the inspiration behind the ice sculpture,” says Kimberly.

While each boat company differs in the number, size and style of vessels they own, many basic services are similar. Most major companies provide a planner to help with set-up and customizing event details, and many provide catering and bar service as part of their packages. Couples can choose the entire slate of activities aboard—ceremony, cocktail party, dinner and dancing—or host just one of the big day’s events. Bands, DJs and décor are the couple’s responsibilities. “We recommend smaller bands due to the space on the boat,” Berger says. “We have the capacity for people to plug their phones into the boat’s system and we also have a set of DJ speakers that they can rent to get a DJ vibe.” Guests are not allowed until boarding time, and most wedding parties will come on about 30 minutes early for a little down-time before their guests arrive, Berger says. She suggests couples book at least six months in advance. And if you’re looking for an officiant, Padelford has one captain who can perform your wedding.

THE WEXFORD AT EMERALD GREENS

Combining countryside beauty with proximity to the Twin Cities, the Wexford at Emerald Greens (@wexfordweddings) is a sparkling new venue near Hastings. Built on not one, but two 18-hole golf courses that transformed Tom Furlong’s family farm, the whole operation is still family-owned and run by his children. The Wexford’s event center features soaring ceilings with wood beam trusses, light-filled, floor-to-ceiling windows and a 20-foot-high door that opens to the wraparound outdoor deck. Inside, the venue can accommodate up to 400 guests, and with 3,000 square feet of outside patio space, guests can cozy up by a fire table and enjoy a cocktail and the sunset. An outdoor ceremony site with a sound system and tiered bench seating features a waterfall. The Wexford has an exclusive list of caterers with a range of options, as well as a full-service bar. Couples can select their own florist, DJs and day-of planners. While there is no on-site lodging, The Wexford has a partnership with Crowne Plaza in Bloomington that provides discounts and shuttle services; plus, the new Confluence hotel is six miles away in Hastings on the Mississippi River. It goes without saying that golf can be part of your agenda, and in any season: Bogey’s Pub, at the turn between the two courses, has eight state-of-the-art golf simulators; two are equipped with a variety of sports, including bowling, bocce, croquet, cornhole, shooting and more.

Take a former office building and transform it into a sophisticated, contemporary event space—that’s what the Hemisphere Restaurants group did with Venue 983 (@venue_983) in Minneapolis. Enter through the art deco-style brass doors to a gracious space that is the perfect blank canvas. The modern Sputnik-style chandeliers contrast against the black, gray and taupe color scheme and complement the bar’s pendant lighting. Venue 983 is a one-stop shop, with its own catering and bar service (outside cake and desserts are allowed). “We have preferred vendors [and] connections, but also offer an on-site event director to assist in the coordination of the event leading up to the day,” says Cara Wallsog, marketing director. With a capacity of 210 seated and 300 standing, Venue 983 also boasts ample, free on-site parking. The Hemisphere Restaurants group’s other properties are The Tavern Grill, Taza and Sphere.

PIKE LAKE GOLF & BEACH CLUB

Venture north of the Twin Cities for the Pike Lake Golf & Beach Club (@pikelakegolfandbeach) in Duluth. The club opened in 2020, the event center in 2022. Featuring a mix of stone, wood, exposed beams and neutral tones, the event center has an industrial-chic vibe that meshes perfectly with the rugged northern Minnesota landscape. Exchange vows in the bright, airy space that can comfortably accommodate 325-360 guests. Or hold your ceremony at one of several outdoor sites, some of which overlook beautiful Pike Lake.

THE HOLLYWOOD

If it’s Hollywood glamour you seek, you’ll find it in … Northeast Minneapolis? Yes! New venue The Hollywood (@hollywood_mpls) is a restored 1935 art deco theater, described at the time as “an incomparable showplace.” Closed in 1987, the building was left to deteriorate until the National Park Service recognized its historical significance and put it on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. Northeast resident and entrepreneur Andrew Volna bought the property and in consultation with New History, a historic preservation and building reuse firm, The Hollywood was reborn. With gleaming terrazzo floors, a bubbling fountain in the lobby, art deco fixtures and ornamentation and a sweeping staircase, The Hollywood embodies star-quality splendor. At 10,000 square feet, it has a capacity of 275 seated and 500 standing. Couples can bring in their own catering team or select from the venue’s partners. Once you step under The Hollywood’s bright lights and see your message on the marquee, you’re sure to sense a bit of stardust in the air.

Leah Backstrom, mastermind behind Ink Sweets, shared a photo of a checkerboard print to Instagram asking if anyone else was motivated by it, this resulted in the formation of an all-star team of wedding professionals. “Every person on this team felt a call to do something non-traditional,” Athena Hays, owner of Empiria Studios, said. The vision was a bold dinner party-inspired design featuring an array of unexpected hues, earthy elements and a vibrant spread of provisions. The event displayed a stunning juxtaposition, combining organic floral arrangements and details with the precise symmetry of the checkered pattern. From the fruit acting as centerpieces and vases for loose flowers to the zesty color palette and artistic mix of prints, this scheme showcased the power of an unconventional wedding design.

The most remarkable thing about this place is the feeling of togetherness that occurs inside and out of these century-old stone walls.

ROMANTIC COLORS , unique blooms and a dreamy tablescape yielded a whimsical design at Mayowood Stone Barn in Rochester. The sprawling property dates to the early 1900s and was influenced by the architectural style of rural European equestrian barns. Today, the grounds stand as a beacon of Rochester’s rich history and a beautiful locale for couples to tie the knot.

Inspired by the color palette of a spring sunset and mixing traditional components with fanciful elements, Cassie West, owner of Cassie West Events, produced an enchanting wedding day concept. “I love when inspiration comes from the smallest of details,” West said. “In this case, a whimsical pair of bridal heels gave me the inspiration to sprinkle romantic butterflies throughout the entire design.” The stationery and escort card display echoed the same playful spirit with purple tones and butterflies galore.

With a mission to use as many local botanicals as possible, Brianna Prudoehl, owner of Fox & Fern Floral, sourced lush flowers and foliage from four farms around Minnesota, resulting in a diverse array of thriving varieties including snow crabapple, tulips, daffodils and roses, among many others. Having produced designs for countless weddings at the venue, Prudoel challenged herself to do something different. “The Stone Barn is an incredible venue that is elegantly natural, and I wanted the floral to move in harmony with the barn,” she said. The ceremony space was enhanced by dramatic draping complemented by branches, creating an organic feel.

Flickering lavender-scented candles cast a mystical glow on the table beneath an enchanting floral chandelier. Purple glassware, gold cutlery and delicate bows adorned each place setting, enhancing the atmosphere. The impressive three-tiered confection decorated with butterflies and subtle blossoms amidst a bountiful cake meadow was the sweetest ending to the awe-inspiring day.

“It was always a dream of mine to create the dance I would perform with my husband on our wedding day, outside, in our beautiful state,” Michaelene Karlen recounts—a fitting sentiment for the professional ballerina, former Miss Minnesota and businesswoman. Her wish came true when she and Harry wed in a lakeside celebration inspired by classical ballet. Michaelene owns an organic skin care company, and the lush floral installations of romantic white blooms and a wealth of greenery reflected her passion for natural botanicals. Upon arrival, guests mingled on the patio, sampled signature cocktails named for the couple’s dogs, Nina and Greta, and enjoyed mezze fare (a nod to Harry’s Greek heritage) before they made their way down the floral pathway to the lakefront wedding arch for the nuptials, officiated by a family friend. Michaelene turned to the pro, her makeup artist from the Miss Minnesota pageant, and opted to do her hair herself. At the reception, guests received a handwritten mini scroll attached to each dinner menu with wildflower wax seals, with hand-scribed table numbers under glass domes, each graced by a bloom. Isabel Bengtson and Matthew Beich brought a spring-like Italian atmosphere to Minnesota for their whimsical wedding day at The Blaisdell. Their love story began at the University of Minnesota where they both studied elementary education, but sparks didn’t fly until they reconnected after graduation in 2018. The pair chose a champagne bar in Uptown for their first date; five years later they served the same champagne on their wedding day. Isabel bought her dream dress, “Tuileries” by Monique Lhuillier, and worked with HoneyHill Weddings to bring the essence of her fanciful floral gown to their fête. To show their mutual love for gardening, Isabel and Matt wanted to include as many varieties of flowers in various designs as possible, and Abloom delivered. Blooms in pastel blues, greens and peaches were on full display to create a lush botanical haven. A string quartet and jazz band added to the magical ambience as guests gathered to celebrate the couple’s “I do’s” at cocktail hour. The reception echoed the same enchanting ethos: tablescapes included blue linens, lit candles and mini cakes adorned with dainty flowers so each table could participate in the cake cutting with the couple. From start to finish, the newlyweds’ romantic, floral-focused soirée was like a dream. “We love our people, and we love each other,” Isabel said. “We were so happy to be able to celebrate our love and future together in an event that was perfectly us.” — Sydney Stevens

After quarantining together during the pandemic, Jordan popped the question under the Hawaiian stars. With a storyline fueled by their shared love for Disney’s storytelling magic, Jordan and Brody dreamed up a wedding that was “a true reflection of our story.” They envisioned a day that celebrated their unique tale while honoring the cherished guests who journeyed to be a part of their happily ever after. Choosing Minneapolis for its scenic vistas and central locale, The Hutton House emerged as the perfect canvas. The design blended Brody’s love for “texture and depth” with Jordan’s preference for minimalist elegance to create a setting that was both “classically inspired and luxurious.” Fashion choices were made with equal thoughtfulness, with nods to their cherished Disney memories. Seven years after their first dinner date, Mac proposed at the same restaurant where they shared that meal. Their September wedding was awash in light blue, white and floral, from the bridesmaids’ gowns to the opulent floral details. The couple wanted the wedding venue to feel like an enchanted garden in full bloom, transporting their guests into a dreamy world where nature and romance were one. “Their hearts are set on creating a space that exudes lightness, softness and pure romance,” said Paloma Rodrigues of Rosetree Weddings & Events. The soft floral arrangements helped achieve this aesthetic as they bloomed in every corner of the venue—even floating in the garden fountain, adding a whimsical touch to the already stunning scene. The newlyweds exited their ceremony under a tunnel formed by the wedding party and their bouquets, serving as a perfect transition into the evening ahead. Meghna Sohoni and Amit Sawhney met on the dating app Coffee Meets Bagel with Amit’s clever conversation starter: “Mittens or gloves?” Once they discovered that they had attended the same college and lived down the street from each other, a first date was quickly arranged. After many a walk around Lake of the Isles and talking into the wee hours, the two became inseparable. When the time came to plan their wedding celebrations, the couple knew honoring their Indian heritage was important—but they also wanted a modern twist. For their sangeet, Meghna and Samit chose outfits from India in a pastel palette, blending traditional embroidery and contemporary stonework. Their sangeet was a colorful affair, with bridesmaids and groomsmen dressed in their favorite hues. Meghna's look was a stunning ombre teal and blue lehenga, which her mother flew to India to pick up and to ensure the color was perfect. For the wedding day, Meghna opted for a fusion look, combining Punjabi and Maharashtrian traditions. Her red lehenga, a nod to Amit's Punjabi heritage, was adorned with intricate gold details and draped like a saree to pay homage to her Maharashtrian roots. The reception saw the couple in new outfits, with Amit in a tuxedo and Meghna in a violet lehenga that showcased exquisite embroidery and beadwork. The traditional elements of the festivities included a baraat (groom’s procession), with Amit entering on horseback. As a personal touch, the couple, who call each other “goose,” had images of a goose hidden throughout their signage, including the bar coasters. Jenna Starbeck and Sam Schumacher’s love story began with a teenage glance during driver’s ed class. “My mom remembers me gushing about a ‘cute boy’ in my class,” Jenna explains. As fate would have it, their paths intertwined once more in college, leading to a lasting love. After years of shared dreams and two dogs later, Sam proposed to Jenna, turning an ordinary day into an unexpected celebration with family and friends. The couple envisioned a floral-imbued wedding day that melded elegance with the couple’s zest for life. This vision extended into their fashion choices, with Jenna selecting a bridal gown with a fairytale skirt and Sam opting for a classic suit with a pop of color in his bright boutonniere. The wedding day unfolded beneath a breathtaking floral installation of vines, blooms and fairy lights. The couple’s dogs, Prince and Pluto, adorned in flower collars, led the procession. Jenna and Sam exchanged vows against the lush backdrop of a natural arch showcasing the bride’s beloved color palette of pink, peach and lavender. Alicia Lerner & Shane Doane tied the knot in style on their fifth anniversary as a couple. “When we realized September 9th fell on a Saturday in 2023 we knew that had to be our wedding date,” says Alicia. The two met through a friend when Alicia organized a group outing on Minneapolis’ party bike tour, Pedal Pub. From there, they just kept on pedaling. True to their fun-loving nature, Alicia and Shane’s big day comprised playful moments as well as personal details. They started off by reading “funny vows” to each other during the first look, which was followed by a beautiful ceremony officiated by the friend who introduced them. The spirited couple played “Rock, Paper, Scissors” at the altar to determine who would say their vows first. And although traditionally done by the groom, the ceremony ended with Alicia acknowledging her Jewish heritage by breaking the glass in a cloth bag, hand-embroidered by Shane’s aunt. The reception design, which the couple imagined as “classy whimsy,” was achieved by incorporating bright florals and colorful balloons balanced with chic black and white touches. At the forefront was the desire to make the day a party, so the first thing the couple did was rent a white bounce house. “This was a HUGE hit with our guests, and people were using it all night!” The celebration was stacked full of nods to Alicia and Shane’s relationship with details ranging from a choreographed first dance and signature cocktails to Minnesota-themed goodie bags and custom Milkjam ice cream. “Our wedding day was extremely unique, true to us, and fun,” said the bride. — Lila Swedzinski

On a crisp late fall Day, Tsion Teshome and Ben Dezell celebrated their love that was a decade in the making in a romantic, minimalist wedding, surrounded by 250 friends, family and their wedding party—which included three adorable flower girls and two ring bearers. Before the ceremony, Tsion and Ben stole a moment for themselves, exchanging private vows during their first look. The ceremony, officiated by a close family friend, was a blend of tradition and personal touches, such as the couple’s mothers lighting a unity candle together. The bride’s bouquet included peonies in full bloom, which 651 Studio had flown in from Chile. After the ceremony, the couple hopped on a golf cart for sunset photos at the picturesque Gopher Hills golf course. The gem-toned reception was a true celebration of their union that incorporated their love for nature, travel and Tsion’s Ethiopian heritage. They brought an outdoor vibe to the setting with greenery-infused décor and emerald-hued florals while their worldwide adventures were showcased in a photo display. To set the jovial atmosphere, Ethiopian jazz played during dinner and the reception also included Ethiopian music and dancing. Her family wore traditional embroidered dresses, which added even more vibrance. Paige Kaping and Johnnie Hicks’ love story began just like a romance novel. She was working at Urban Eatery on the ground floor of the Beach Club on Bde Maka Ska, he lived in the residences above. As a frequent diner, he quickly became smitten by the cute server, and when he asked her out, she didn’t hesitate. It wasn’t long before they knew it was kismet. (Bonus: Johnnie was also smitten by Paige’s two cats, Simon and Spike.) The fun-loving couple wanted a swanky, 1940s New York jazz club vibe, and the Metropolitan Ballroom and Clubroom proved just the right place. Engagement photos of Paige in an olive-sequined gown, sitting on a piano with a glass of champagne in her hand as a tux-clad Johnnie serenaded her gave guests a hint of the formal affair to come. Surrounded by a wealth of candles in crystal containers, an abundance of mixed white florals and striking gold accents against black backdrops, the scene was nothing short of extraordinary. Cocktail hour featured a jazz trio while guests sipped Manhattans and gin gimlets. During dinner, a 10-piece band took the stage and performed well into the night. Spike and Simon appeared as graphics on cocktail napkins and the namesake of two special after-dinner drinks: whiskey sours served with a cinnamon tiger-stripe stencil to represent Simon and espresso martinis with a cocoa bowtie stencil to represent Spike. Aubrey and her wedding party got ready in style with mimosas and matching pajamas—and Cat’s bridesmaids shared a tender moment with the bride when her mother gifted Cat with her late grandmother’s bracelet. Leading into their first look, both Cat and Aubrey spent a heartfelt moment with their fathers. Then, after much anticipation, the couple had their first look. Sharing tears and smiles, Cat and Aubrey let the rest of the world fall away in that moment. Because of the couple’s shared love of the outdoors, they planned to have the ceremony outside—rain or shine. Dark clouds loomed throughout the morning, but the sun peeked out just in time for the ceremony. The ceremony site was a floral wonderland decorated with baby’s breath, peonies and white roses. Wearing an array of light blue and green gowns, the bridal party was a playful complement to the blooms. Sometimes one wedding leads to another. That was the case for Julieanne Ball and Jonathan Johanson, who met at the wedding of her college roommate and his childhood friend, who thought the two could be a good match. They thought right. As wedding plans got underway, the American Swedish Institute provided the ambiance the duo sought. “He’s a farmer and I am a doctor,” Julieanne says, “so an outdoor wedding suited us both.” Celebrating at the ASI was also a nod to their Scandinavian roots and the perfect location for a reception brimming with floral décor. Blooms ruled the day, starting with flower boxes along the aisle and the steps leading to the ceremony site, with vines twining around the pillars. The bridesmaids wore flower-patterned dresses, and garlands of eucalyptus and roses cascaded down the reception tables. “We incorporated the botanical theme with our cake (blackcurrant and elderflower) and cocktails (elderflower spritz),” Julieanne says. Edible flowers topped off the drinks, with more flowers placed around the cake “to make it look like it was growing from a bouquet.” Speeches from both fathers were the highlight of the night, followed by dining and dancing. “As long as there are drinks and music,” Julieanne says, “people will find a way to have fun.” — Sherri Hildebrandt

The bride was stunning in an off-the-shoulder ball gown with a sweetheart neckline, the groom dashing in his deep charcoal suit with a striking cobalt blue tie and pocket square. The groomsmen looked sharp in their matching gray suits and light blue ties, perfectly coordinating with the bridesmaids’ pale blue gowns. The décor was playfully elegant, with a mirror seating chart display featuring custom wax seals in a copper tone, a hue reflected in the geometric vases and lanterns that adorned the aisle and the fireplace altar. A lush floral installation cascaded from the mantel, adding a touch of romance to the ceremony space. During the ceremony, members of the wedding party delivered heartfelt readings, and the couple participated in a unity candle ceremony to symbolize their union. After tying the knot, the space was transformed into a chic reception featuring a mix of long and round tables boasting minimalist touches, including tall, graceful florals and flickering candles. The laughter continued into the evening, with the wedding party’s entrance dances setting the tone. Their shared love for the sci-fi/fantasy world and edgy aesthetics were apparent in every aspect of their intimate fall wedding at The Loft at Studio J. The venue's exposed brick walls perfectly complemented their vision of a sophisticated, yet cozy, affair. Standing before the industrial-chic backdrop they exchanged vows beneath a softly lit chandelier. Bouquets featuring a rich mix of roses, ranunculus and dahlias in moody shades of blush, crimson and burgundy and the ethereal glow of market lights strung throughout the space added a romantic touch. Guests at the reception were seated at long tables featuring floral arrangements cascading down the center. Surrounded by black and burgundy florals, a whimsical ’Til Death neon sign served as both a playful photo op and a symbol of the couple’s commitment to each other; the same motto appeared in elegant black script on their petite heart-shaped wedding cake adorned with intricate white Lambeth-style piping. “So do you like motorcycles?” That was Josh Jensen’s opening line when he met Caitlin Schneider at the Owatonna Steel County Free Fair a few years after they graduated from the same high school. The next big question he asked Caitlin involved a bit more bling. The couple was at Hampton Hills Tree Farm picking out their Christmas tree when he dropped to one knee. The surprises continued: Caitlin came home to a surprise engagement party attended by her closest friends and family. Selecting a venue was easy—years earlier, the couple wound up crashing a wedding at The Grand, an old movie theater in Northfield. “We both love a vintage moment which the Grand embodies—and that is what we wanted our wedding to feel like,” says Caitlin. On the big day, the girls got ready at Caitlin and Josh’s home while the guys prepped at an Airbnb in downtown Northfield. Caitlin specifically went to Ivory Bridal Co. for her astrologically aligned bridal gown, “The Virgo.” On the day of the wedding the thoughtful couple showered each other as well as their friends and family with gifts such as a Scotty Cameron golf putter for the groom and long-desired Gucci loafers for the bride, while their moms scored engraved perfume bottles and the bridesmaids unwrapped pajamas, Ugg slippers and hankies embroidered with “Keep your shit together.” A close friend deejayed the reception and kept the dance floor packed and the bar kept the cocktails flowing with the couple’s favorite drinks: brandy old-fashioneds for Josh and Caitlin’s espresso martini. — Lila Swedzinski

Even though they attended the same high school, they didn‘t cross paths until Madeline was graduating and Aaron returned home from college. A gathering with mutual friends sparked their relationship, and they’ve been together ever since. Choosing Creekside Farm was a natural decision, as the property was close to where the couple grew up and added to the homey feeling they sought. With photographer Tonya Hjort’s help, their first look was an intimate moment where they held hands and savored the moment together. Likewise, during the ceremony the couple chose to keep their vows private by reading them silently. Their floral arrangements featured warm, soft colors and lots of greenery to match the fall ambiance. Soft pink and white roses, along with golden pampas grass, created a bouquet that echoed the season’s muted tones. For the dessert table, reflecting Madeline’s love of sweets, they opted for an array of fun desserts instead of a single choice, all complemented by top-of-the-line coffee from Something Sweet and Willows Coffee, who also integrated their floral theme into the setup. Shop for groom and groomsmen suits. Shop for bridesmaid dresses. Select a caterer.

Choose a baker, schedule cake tastings. Order your gown and schedule fittings (remember to bring your shoes).

Hire a florist.

Book a band/DJ.

Start researching honeymoon spots. Finalize the guest list.

Book a stationer (and calligrapher, if using one).

Mail save-the-date cards.

Purchase your shoes, headpiece, jewelry and lingerie for the big day.

Book hair and makeup artists for the big day.

Reserve event necessities. Book portable toilets for outdoor events, extra chairs, linens, lighting and so on.

Start making a day-of timeline, determining what should happen when (speeches, first dance, etc).

Book a block of hotel rooms near the reception site for out-of-town guests. Register for gifts at two to three places. Start to keep track of favorite songs.

4 TO 6 MONTHS BEFORE:

Order all wedding stationery (invitations, envelopes, thank-you notes) and work out pricing for programs, menus and place cards, which will be printed closer to the date.

Hire wedding-day transportation. Book flights and hotel reservations for your honeymoon.

Arrange the rehearsal dinner.

Schedule any beauty treatments (browwaxing, facials, teeth-whitening) that you’d like to have done before the wedding.

Send a guest list to the host of your bridal shower.

Order passport, if necessary.

Purchase wedding rings; order engraving. Remind mother and mother-in-law to start shopping for their dresses.

2 TO 4 MONTHS BEFORE:

Meet with the caterer or facility manager to discuss menus, wine selections, serving style, etc.

Choose and order wedding favors and welcome baskets, if desired.

Order the wedding cake.

Meet with your officiant to discuss your ceremony; invite loved ones to perform readings, if appropriate.

Choose songs for the ceremony and reception.

Buy thank-you gifts for your attendants. Confirm group hotel rates for out-oftown guests.

Book your pre-wedding and weddingnight hotel.

Finalize your honeymoon plans. Send invitations to the calligrapher if you’re using one.

Plan your bachelorette party with your attendants.

Send a day-of timeline to your vendors so they’ll have ample time for tweaks and feedback.

Sign up for dance lessons, if desired.

1 TO 2 MONTHS BEFORE:

Mail invitations.

Do a hair and makeup run-through (with headpiece).

Meet with the caterer to finalize a menu. Send programs, menus and escort cards to the stationer to be printed (if not using a calligrapher).

Send your wedding announcement to local newspapers, if desired.

Write thank-you notes as you receive gifts.

Maintain a list of all presents received and thank-yous written.

2 TO 4 WEEKS BEFORE:

Plot the seating for the reception. Confirm times with all vendors.

Have your final dress fitting.

Write your rehearsal dinner toast. Compose your vows, if desired.

Visit the salon for one last cut and color.

Send escort cards and the seating chart to your calligrapher to fill in guests’ names and table numbers.

Enter RSVPs into a guest-list database, and call invitees who haven’t yet responded.

Get your marriage license. If you’re changing your name, order several extra copies. If changing your name, make arrangements with Social Security, Department of Motor Vehicles, credit card companies and your bank.

Mail the rehearsal dinner invitations, if applicable. Stock the bar using your final head count as a guide. Send out as many final vendor payments as you can. Provide addresses for drivers of transport vehicles. Create a must-take “shot list” and discuss it with your photographer.

1 WEEK BEFORE:

Compile the fees that will be due on the wedding day.

Give the caterer a final head count.

Appoint a reliable pal to transport the cake knife, toasting glasses, etc. to and from the reception site. Get final beauty treatments (facial, waxing, browshaping, etc.).

Pack for the honeymoon. Ask someone to bring your luggage to the reception if you’re leaving from there.

Give your honeymoon itinerary to a friend or family member in case of emergency. Pick up your dress or make arrangements for it to be fetched or delivered.

Arrange for the cake to be delivered to the reception venue.

Buy a guest book, if you choose to use one.

Delegate small wedding-day tasks: someone to carry your things; someone to bustle your dress; someone to manage the gifts; someone to hand out tips; and so on.

Send a timeline to the bridal party, including every member’s contact information.

Break in your shoes.

Assemble and distribute welcome baskets to out-of-town guests, if desired.

Pick up wedding rings, check engravings and sizes. Remind men to pick up formalwear and shoes, and check them for fit.

If you don’t have a personal attendant, ask a friend to help you get dressed on the big day. Talk to head usher about any special seating arrangements.

Arrange for a light snack for the wedding party to eat while getting ready for the ceremony.

LAST 24 HOURS:

Help decorate the venue, if necessary. Have a manicure, pedicure and any other last-minute pampering treatments.

Distribute thank-you gifts to the wedding party, special attendants and parents.

Organize for a note or gift to be delivered to your fiancé on the wedding day.

Take a relaxing bath, go to bed early and start getting excited. You’re about to get married!
