“Paige’s entire attitude around us buying our forever home was completely in line with us getting married. Paige absolutely kept our hopes and dreams very high even when we were worried things weren’t working out as we wanted them to. Paige not only cheered us on through the house buying process, she continuously reaches out & checks in with how we are settling in in our neighborhood & loves to hear any and all wedding plans!”

Making Moves

After you say yes to the dress, let me help you say yes to your new home! I understand life is full of change & I love supporting my clients through it all. If you are looking to buy or sell a home - please reach out.

“We cannot thank Paige enough for helping us stay sane during this process….she was genuinely interested in helping us decide what was best for us, not just trying to gain another client or sell another home. Being able to lean on Paige for home advice during this time was a great outlet to get my mind off those long days/nights of wedding planning.”

IN THE DEEP MIDWINTER

WARM UP THE CHILLIEST WINTER DAY with tones of rich red and vintage burgundy for a touch of mystery and a splash of green for delightful romance, in this event design by Lexie Skoog of ALEXIA Weddings & Events.

1. SIMPLY DECADENT

Talk about scrumptious. These mostly white cakes, lavishly adorned with contrasting florals, come from the artistic mind of Chelsea Dudek of Hey There, Cupcake. Pick a flavor, from peanut butter to apple spice, with fillings from fresh fruit to Snickers—you want it, she can make it.

2. THE BEST OF BLING

Timeless symbols of love, these rings capture the depth of your commitment, with burnished gold and gems glowing with an inner fire. His ring is from Jewelry by Johan, specializing in unique bands that use natural materials such as antler and out-of-thisworld meteorite. Her black diamond ring is from Apple Valley Diamonds, whose wealth of designs and years of experience are always at your service.

3. STEPPING OUT

You can’t go wrong with this essential ankle-strap sandal with chunky wrapped heel. In black, “Yaro” by Sam Edelman is sophistication itself, but it’s also available in a range of colors from pink to silver—and for the wild ones among you, animal print.

4. SETTING PRETTY

The high style of this place setting from Ultimate Events is just right for your ultimate event. Touches of gold, including the sweet floral sprig, raise the glamour quotient, set off by the transparent charger and chic black and white accents. The delicate evergreen bough is a traditional emblem of winter.

5. STATEMENT PIECE

Andrea Mikla Designs took the motto “Go big or go home” to heart, with bold colors and oversized blossoms in her splendid floral creations. This unstructured arrangement of lush blooms, ready-to-burst buds and draping greenery is perfection in a golden bowl.

6. BE OUR GUEST

This lavish stationery suite by Autumn Made Co mirrors the palette throughout the event. Understated floral designs on the envelope liner and the invitation lighten the mood. It’s tucked into a translucent vellum envelope, then wrapped with a black cord with a gold wax seal for a final flourish.

NEW VENUE

Modern Style Meets the Great Outdoors

The Grand View Lodge in Nisswa, a Minnesota mainstay for family vacations, has added a little urban appeal to their offerings with their new boutique hotel, North. The 60-room option is just steps away from the main lodge, so you won’t miss any adventures and activities.

Designed by local architect Nor-Son, North features an interior created by award-winning Looney and Associates and blends contemporary and earthy elements. Its modern boutique vibe creates a tranquil experience for younger and more mature crowds alike.

For your convenience, North offers its own breakfast area, as well as Brew, a bar that serves coffee, beer, wine and small bites.

After a long day, grab a latte, craft beer or rosé and relax by the grand fireplace in the lobby or one of the many cozy seating options throughout the hotel.

Besides the plethora of wedding options already available at the resort, you can now choose from among North’s spacious conference rooms to host your reception, rehearsal dinner, morning-after brunch or whatever celebration fits your style. The knowledgeable and welcoming team is at your service to make your soirée the best one yet.

BEAUTY A SALON ON THE GO

A year of business shutdowns and social isolation has meant more than a few hurdles for the bridal industry to overcome. Susan Chin, owner/operator of The Chandelier Suite luxury salon in Burnsville, took on the challenge and expanded her business to include a custom mobile bridal boutique.

Chin drew up the floorplans and collaborated with Northwind Trailer Group to create her mobile boutique. She travels around Minnesota in a spacious, remodeled ice-fishing house with full insulation, all-terrain tires, restroom, heat, air conditioning and a fireplace. Standard rental includes 60 miles round-trip, with $2.50 per mile after that.

She provides styling in the trailer, with an Italian leather wrapped purple styling chair, marble countertops, crystal door handles, shiplap interior and signature chandeliers, along with DIY makeup bar and a custom 8-foot bench. The boutique also makes an ideal area for pre-ceremony activities and socializing for the bride and her ladies, who can use the wet bar and wine fridge for beverages and snacks, while the dark palette makes a striking contrast to bridal white.

The trailer can comfortably accommodate 8-12 people. During nice weather, Chin likes to put the awning out and set up an outdoor rug with bistro set so the bridal party can make it an indoor-outdoor event.

“I offer it for bridal parties, little princess glam parties, ladies’ nights, proms, homecomings,

birthdays, graduations, get away from the husband nights, The Bachelor finale viewing parties—whatever they may want it for, I’m pretty flexible.”

Her brick-and-mortar store, where she specializes in hair coloring, balayage and chemical treatments, is still open. Chin, who has owned her own business for over four years, has 12 years of experience in hair color.

CATERING

Bringing Campfire Vibes to Your Big Day

North Mallow, founded by former camp counselors Mark and Christine Nelson, has put a festive spin for cold-weather celebrations on their traveling custom s’mores bar and newly introduced mini kits to use as scrumptious wedding favors.

North Mallow, based in Golden Valley, can travel up to two hours for your big day and provides a staffed setup. They provide up to three hours of roasting with three flavors of their homemade marshmallows:

chocolate chip, vanilla bean and caramel swirl, with a variety of chocolate options, including Ghirardelli, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and classic Hershey’s. Plus, they offer both traditional and gluten-free graham crackers. (Mark and Christine’s personal favorite is a combination of the chocolate chip marshmallow, vanilla bean marshmallow, dark chocolate and their gourmet graham crackers.)

A “roast master” is stationed at the dessert table, helping guests choose the best s’more

combinations and can answer any dessert questions that may arise.

North Mallow also offers the perfect takehome goodies for your guests. The Mini S’mores Kit includes vanilla bean marshmallows, North Mallow’s gourmet graham crackers and gourmet chocolate. Wash it down with their divine Mini Hot Cocoa Kit, which includes vanilla bean marshmallows and North Mallow dairy-free hot cocoa mix.

BEAUTY

SAY GOOD-BYE TO WINTER SKIN WOES

Winter in the northern latitudes can be especially hard on the skin, which is the last thing a bride wants to think about before her wedding day. Claire Powell, owner of Bella Virtue Organics in St. Paul, provides a variety of products made from organic, clean ingredients, specially created to help moisturize and soothe very dry skin exposed to harsh, winter conditions.

Rhassoul Clay & Rose Rejuvenating Mask is made with rare rhassoul clay, found only in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, where people have been using it for over 900 years to help purify their skin. It not only removes toxins from the skin for a deep clean, but contains nourishing minerals that help reduce the appearance of lines and pores.

Moisturizing Radiance Facial Serum is massaged into the face before a moisturizer to replenish and deeply moisturize with nourishing safflower oil. Clary sage essential oil helps calm redness and irritation and immortelle oil helps reduce the appearance of fine lines.

Intense Hydrating Cream is a thick, rich moisturizing cream made with shea butter to soften the skin and deeply moisturize, with açai extract for powerful antioxidants; add to that a soothing lavender oil and immortelle for a great night cream so you can wake up with restored and hydrated skin.

BEAUTY A Safe Haven for Your Nails

If living through a pandemic made you more aware of safety, you’re not alone. Put those worries aside at Haven Nail Studio, and just let yourself be pampered.

Natalie Bolden and Kaitlin Casper’s entrepreneurial spirit and an interest in raising the bar in clean beauty led them to leave their corporate jobs to enroll in nail school. They opened Haven Nail Studio in 2019, a soothing sanctuary in the heart of Edina’s France Avenue shopping district.

Haven offers gentle, waterless nail care services, which they prefer for several reasons: longevity of manicure, less bacteria and better for the environment. Bolden and Casper like to say that sustainability and social responsibility is like the cherry on top of their business. Beyond the advantages of going waterless, they also screen their products for harmful ingredients and use hospital-grade sanitation practices for a cleaner and safer experience.

Haven is happy to host bachelorette and bridal parties—they suggest booking a few weeks in advance. Looking for a little something extra for your bridesmaids? Pick up some of their Haven Cuticle Oil as the perfect little gift; it’s a collaboration with Romi Apothecary, a local plant-powered beauty brand, and will leave your friends’ fingers and toes in tip-top shape.

WRITTEN IN THE STARS

If you’re looking for a luxurious addition to your big day, rethink twinkle lights. They complement any color scheme and are an easy way to make your event sparkle. For example, drape them en masse to create a shimmering tent for an indoor under-the-Milky-Way effect, shown here in a wedding by Rachelle Mazumdar of Style-Architects Weddings and Events at Machine Shop.

NEWLYWED GLOW

Another simple, striking use of twinkle lights is this minimalist ceremony installation, in a wedding by Abby Havlicek of Maven Events and Kitty Ciernia of The Neu Neu. You can opt for white light to brighten a whole room, a subtler yellow tone to create a warm, dreamy atmosphere or try another hue for a different mood—the options are endless.

NEON MEMORIES

A bright, funky accent to your wedding, custom LED signs are trending, and a quick Etsy search provides a plethora of options. From family names to phrases like “Better together,” these signs make for memorable photos. This one illuminates a wedding planned by Revel & Flourish. Bonus: These signs can be a sweet little keepsake—maybe the perfect accent piece for your home bar.

MAKE A STATEMENT

Want a little drama? Leave a lasting impression with big, bold marquee letters such as these from Alpha Lit Twin Cities. You have free rein— combine words and phrases to fit your needs, like “Bride to be,” “Mr. & Mrs.,” and the always apt “Love.” Marquee letters can also make a great photo op at engagement shoots, wedding showers and bachelorette parties.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

NO WADAYS , PLANNING A BACHELORETTE PARTY DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN BARHOPPING. From making art to trekking through the great outdoors, there are plenty of unique opportunities for your squad. Read on to learn about a few uncommon options—and if partying is still your forte, we’ve got some suggestions for that, too.

Is art the key to your heart? Then The Traveling Art Pub is the place for you and your crew. This pub has locations in Walker and Brainerd, and can come to you, or you can come to them. A trained instructor will guide you and the gals through the creative process, all while you snack, drink, and chit-chat. The best part is that everyone will go home with an original piece of art that’s a keepsake of an amazing day.

The Fab Tap is a mobile bar that also offers a customizable experience for the girl gang that loves getting crafty. You can sip champagne as you make flower crowns or play yard games, among the many options, and they’ll come to you from Plymouth in an adorable Airstream trailer. Add their Polaroid selfie booth to your package and capture the sweet memories of you and the girls you love.

ROLLING FORKS VINEYARDS

Outdoorsy gals can revel in the natural world on an all-inclusive journey with Adventures In Good Company, which specializes in small-group, women-only outdoor adventures.

Winter enthusiasts can enjoy dog-sledding, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in Tofte, followed by a rejuvenating stay at Bluefin Bay with a hot-tub soak and views of Lake Superior. Managing director Kelly Kimple suggests booking private groups six to eight months in advance to ensure that all details can be accounted for.

Another all-inclusive option is a group trip canoeing, hiking and exploring the Boundary Waters with Wilderness Inquiry, which can accommodate people of all abilities on a trek led by an experienced guide.

For animal lovers, try yoga with llamas at Carlson’s Llovable Llamas in Waconia. This lighthearted class combines stretching and mindfulness as you bond with these friendly, inquisitive creatures. Don’t worry—experienced llama managers ensure a safe and welcoming environment for meeting and interacting with animals.

For the bride who just wants to party, Minnesota has a wide array of watering holes to visit, and safe and stylish transportation options to get you there and back. If you’re lucky enough to have a bridesmaid who’s a great planner, let her take the wheel and book transportation, like Trobec’s Bus

Rental or Voigt’s Bus Service, and then map out a few wineries or breweries.

If you want the full experience, put Carlos Creek Winery in Alexandria on your itinerary. Rent out the brewery loft and kick back to enjoy bottomless mimosas and amazing food. With a winery, pizza kitchen, food truck, music venue and outdoor games all in one place, good times are ready to roll.

Do you prefer a peaceful picnic overlooking a scenic lake? Make Rolling Forks Vineyards in Glenwood your next stop. Whether toasting to your new life with refreshing Ruby Rhubarb wine slushies or snacking on a savory cheese board, your friends will love the alfresco outing. Or book a private wine tasting for your group, where you can relax near one of their cozy fire pits with a glass of Marquette wine in hand.

More interested in trying out some locacl craft brews? Take advantage of Premier Transportation’s customizable brewery tour. You pick out a few microbreweries in the Twin Cities area, and Premier will take you there. *

Pretty In Pink

A cold-weather wedding doesn’t have to be drab. Add personality to the party with a modern mix of vibrant hues and pops of pink.

Rich shades of red and pink make this bouquet by Love MK Florals stand out, especially on a snowy day. Got a groom who likes to show off his sense of style? A suit coat from Xandy’s Bridal in a matching hue completes the theme.

Pink isn’t just for florals: This offbeat arrangement featuring sweet treats by Glam Doll Donuts takes magenta to the max, adding funk and flash to a dessert display.

Make your signage sing. This table card by Epitome Papers shines in rainbow tones that will have your guests smiling even before they take their seats.

A bold botanical centerpiece by Ergo Floral brings romantic flourish to this classic table— silver and gold settings on white china and linens, designed by ALEXIA Weddings and Events.

A pinch of whimsy and a dash of daring colors are the key ingredients in this season’s most adventurous cakes.
A playful installation of ranunculus, roses, olive branches and ferns frolics across the wall behind an array of autumn-inspired cakes at Machine Shop.

This loose, woodsy bouquet by Martha’s Gardens is spirited yet sophisticated, spilling over with a bounty of greenery and lush blooms.

A four-tiered cake by Ink Sweets is a stunner, ablaze in orange. Paper-thin layers of fondant add a hint of texture, as handmade sugar tulips, ranunculus and roses ascend the side. RIGHT

Linens in shades of sage and pumpkin, from Linen Effects, and the cheery menu by Paper Rock Scissor extend the fall theme in this cozy table setting.

Textured brushstrokes in forest and moss greens, all flecked with edible gold, sweep across this work of art by Chowgirls Catering. Rice paper and wafer paper elements top off the masterpiece, complemented by ranunculus and a single, perfect rose. BELOW

Fit for a fairy tale, warm neutrals on eyes and lips accentuate the bride’s natural beauty, while side-swept tresses complete her carefree look; both by WarPaint International Beauty Agency. Dainty pearls add the crowning touch in her headpiece and earrings from BHLDN.

It’s all in the details in this standout of square tiers, with the third tier perched demurely atop a jewel box just waiting to be filled. Keep the day super-unique to who you are as a couple. Incorporate things you love to do, places you’ve been and invest in the parts of the day that mean the most to you. Ultimately, you want the day to feel like you, so don’t settle for anything less!

—Lexie Cummings, Availed Wedding and Event Planning

AFTER COVID FORCED Halli Kubes and Reid Jacobson to scrap their plans for a big-city soirée, they opted for a weekend getaway to one of their favorite places in the world—Lutsen, on Minnesota’s North Shore. With their closest friends and family (all encouraged to bring their dogs), the couple held a romantic woodland ceremony, followed by a laid-back barbecue. Throughout it all, the idyllic views made it an event of a lifetime.

My favorite part of the wedding was knowing everyone had fun and was relaxed...2020 was a hard year as it was, and we wanted to make it the least stressful as possible for everyone.

ANGELLICA HOLT AND NICHOLAS NOVACK’S goal for their wedding was to create a time and place for friends and family to just relax and have fun. They booked the Olive Branch Retreat in Grey Eagle, a converted convent with accommodations for 22 people, which allowed half of the wedding guests to stay and enjoy the entire weekend with them. On their big day, they started with yoga and yard games. They walked down the aisle with their dogs Isabella, Rookie and Indigo as their wedding party, then topped it all off with a bonfire and card games for a perfectly low-key celebration.

MORGAN SMITH AND CHASE LIABOE had big plans for a big wedding. Then along came COVID, and with both working in health care, they were too stressed and busy to plan a big affair. They downsized their plans three times as state regulations shifted; then, with less than a month before their date, regulations tightened even more. Ultimately, the duo decided that getting married safely was what mattered the most, and opted to keep their original date with a courthouse wedding at the Minnesota Judicial Center in St. Paul. Morgan’s aunt, a judge, officiated, and the couple’s parents attended. Morgan and Chase made the day memorable with exceptional attire, and Morgan received a last-minute surprise bouquet from their planner, Laine Palm, and florist, Maven. The two are still planning a big celebration in December 2021 at Aria in Minneapolis, because, as they say, “We still want to party!”

There is something so poignant about choosing love, and choosing to find happiness, joy and peace in a wedding that is nothing like what we originally envisioned or planned for.
—Morgan Smith

Our planning, as it turned out, was inspired by the moment, but also by the relationships of people we’ve come to know during our time here in Minnesota— making it intimate and memorable.

SYDNI COLEMAN AND ZOE ZULAKIS had picked the perfect date: June 26, the anniversary of the Obergefell v. Hodges decision, a ruling that made marriages like theirs legal. But 2020 had other plans, and they decided to wait. After a few months, they were determined to finish off a tough year with some good news, and courtesy of a cancellation, they secured the last opening of the year at The Blaisdell in Minneapolis. With only three weeks to plan, they pulled off a serene New Year’s Eve wedding with a little help from their friends. From their makeup to the bouquets to the cake, friends lovingly crafted many elements, with two of their best friends as the sole guests. Although their celebration wasn’t what they had planned, the couple says it was everything they could have hoped for.

THIS ONE-OF-A-KIND elopement-inspired styled shoot coordinated by Samantha Kleven Photography was born out of Kleven’s passion for travel and adventure. With a fresh dusting of snow, real-life lovebirds Mariah and David display their affection with an out-of-this-world prop—a hybrid helicopter-airplane owned by one of Kleven’s friends. As one of only two of its kind in the United States, the aircraft was draped with lush florals, ready to take this daring duo on a journey of a lifetime.

There is no elopement like another! There are so many ‘Instagram-worthy’ spots to get married, but nothing will ever replace the kind of love each couple has.

Incorporating our cultural backgrounds was a priority and a way to honor those who have passed. Showcasing our indigenous cultures made us feel more connected to our families, the land and to each other. We encourage others to dig deep, talk to your elders about what traditions were in their parents' and grandparents’ weddings. You might be surprised and delighted at what you find out!

AFTER THE PANDEMIC DISRUPTED Anaca

Ramirez and Cody Welch’s plans to wed in September at Aria in Minneapolis, surrounded by guests from around the globe, they got to thinking. Anaca had often marveled at the tipis outside the recently finished Hocokata Ti, the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s cultural center in Shakopee, the community Cody belongs to. It occurred to her it was the ideal location for an intimate wedding with cultural highlights, so their new plan began. She chose a vibrant floral-print dress to honor her Mexican heritage, which also inspired the colorful wildflowers in her bouquet and décor. The day of, Cody’s father did a smudging of sage and sweetgrass to cleanse the tipi, and the duo wore Greek crowns that Cody’s grandparents had worn on their wedding day in 1958. A bald eagle even perched on the tipi for a moment, which the couple considered a blessing from Cody’s aunt, who had recently passed away. *

Somewhere in Time

Minnesota is replete with venues steeped in history. Here are seven with stories to tell.

THE VAN DUSEN MANSION

Dreamed of getting married in a castle? The Van Dusen Mansion at the edge of downtown Minneapolis is pretty close. The 12,000-squarefoot home was built in 1892 by one of Minnesota’s kings of commerce, George Washington Van Dusen, founder of Minnesota’s first (and highly prosperous) grain firm in 1883. Among special features are 10 wood-burning fireplaces and stunning stained glass above the grand staircase. At various times, the mansion has housed the College of Commerce, the College of Medical Technology, the Horst Institute, and the Hamline Law School. Guest capacity is 200; food and beverage services are through Mintahoe Catering. thevandusenmansion.com

MAYOWOOD STONE BARN

Once part of the 3,000 acres of the original Mayowood Farm in Rochester, the Stone Barn was built around 1912 to house ponies and thoroughbred horses. Built of limestone by Dr. Charles (Chuck) Mayo (son of the clinic founder), the material adds special charm. Elsewhere on the property are giant bur oaks, including the 306-year-old “ceremony tree” with a natural arch that makes it a perfect ceremony site. The barn can accommodate 300 guests; in-house catering and beverage services are provided exclusively by Canadian Honker Catering. mayowoodstonebarn.com

PIER B RESORT HOTEL

Shipping played a huge role in Minnesota’s early economy, and the Duluth harbor was at the heart of it all. Construction of Pier B, at the edge of Lake Superior, began in 1890 by Kelley Island Lime and Transport Co. to store limestone shipped by steamer from their mine on Kelley’s Island on Lake Erie. Now imagine exchanging your vows on the harborside deck overlooking the lake, complete with views of that historic harbor, Bayfront Festival Park and the Aerial Lift Bridge, itself a notable part of Up North history. The venue also offers a variety of indoor spaces, complete with more vistas of the harbor and skyline. Guest capacity is 225; catering and beverage service must be arranged through Pier B’s on-site facility pierbresort.com

THE GRANADA THEATER

Starry skies will twinkle above your event, no matter the hour or weather, when you host your event at the Granada Theater in Uptown Minneapolis. Built in 1927, the theater was one of the first in the Twin Cities to show “talkies,” and a dazzler in its day. The Spanish revival theater, renamed the Suburban World Theater in the 1950s, was closed in the early 2000s, but its original name and glamour are back, with painstakingly restored ornate statuary, towering colonnades and a vaulted ceiling painted like a clear night sky. The auditorium has been reconfigured to accommodate dinners for 300, and a full kitchen has menu options suitable for every guest’s tastes granadampls.com

THE WHIM

stylish Moorish Room, which features intricate wall sconces, hand-painted murals and a mosaic tile dance floor, can seat 200 for dinner; its mahogany vintage bar is especially eye-catching. The Ballroom, a larger space with mahogany walls and magnificent chandeliers, has grand windows that reveal ornate architectural details. It can seat 375 for dinner; in-house catering and bar services are available, with options for a custom menu. Desserts and specialty items may be brought in on a case-by-case basis. greysolonballroom.com

THE ST. JAMES HOTEL

Combine the romance of a historic Mississippi River town and a hotel known for nearly 150 years of beauty and hospitality, and you have a fairy tale come true. At Red Wing’s St. James Hotel, five unique wedding venues range from the Victorian dining room, perfect for a cozy microwedding, to the Summit banquet room that boasts river views and seating for 240 guests. A full complement of services is available to cover every detail.

THE GRAIN EXCHANGE

Once echoing with the shouts of buyers and sellers on the trading floor, the Grain Exchange in Minneapolis is now an elegant site for weddings and receptions large and small. Built in 1902, the venue boasts soaring 46-foot ceilings and floorto-ceiling windows filling the space with natural light. With original architecture and artwork, the venue, an important part of Minnesota history, is loaded with character. The space can accommodate up to 400 guests, depending on setup; groups of 50 to 200 are optimal. The staff at the Grain Exchange is happy to suggest vendors that are familiar with the space, or couples can customize catering and beverage services with outside vendors of their choice.

The sophistication of gold with the natural textures of rattan and wicker harmonize in an elegant boho look in Blacksmith Main of the Northern Pacific Center in Brainerd. The head table florals mirror the installation, with complementary hues in the tapers.

Who wouldn’t smile in this dreamy gown? “Lalibela” by Yumi Katsura from Bridal Accents Couture is a study in sweet elegance. Flatware glows beside stoneware and rattan chargers on a frothy ivory tablecloth. The welcome sign signals the joy of the day, framing a dynamic display of grasses and dried palms.

The stationery suite draws inspiration from seasonal colors: a terra cotta-colored invitation, with a rustic belly band and jute cord. The pink reply cards with deep red type hint at the rose-toned florals throughout the venue.

Capturing emotion—the raw, unfiltered moments that define you as a couple and show you as your best self— that’s the goal. In the in-between moments—the ones that happen after a posed smile, when you’re goofing around with your other half, forgetting a picture is being taken. And in capitalizing on natural surroundings, utilizing the bold and industrial and natural to explore the balance between a little bit wild and a little bit tame. Because at the end of the day, it’s about capturing the memories and remembering the details—one picture at a time.

Aneeta & Jonathon

INDIAN WEDDING : August 9, 2020; private home, Oak Grove

CHRISTIAN WEDDING: August 13, 2020; Bavaria Downs, Chanhassen

RECEPTION: Bavaria Downs, HONEYMOON: Bora Bora (planned)

Aneeta Babulal and Jonathon Boor Boor’s wedding was something of an international event. Aneeta, who is of Indian descent and grew up in Guyana, and Jonathon, who is of Persian and American descent and is from Pine City, Minnesota, initially planned their dream wedding for Villa del Balbianello in Italy. Everything was planned and booked. Then COVID struck, and Aneeta’s family, living in Switzerland, told the couple that the Italian border was closing. The couple waited to see how things would pan out, but eventually made a new plan: an Indian

wedding (lasting only two days instead of the traditional three or four), followed by a smaller Christian ceremony at Bavaria Downs. (Aneeta was smitten by the venue. “It wasn’t Italy, but had so many European elements.”) She literally incorporated the flavor of their cultures in the celebrations, asking the caterers to re-create the Jon’s favorite dish, his late grandmother’s Persian orange-peel rice with chicken, for the menu. In another nod to their roots, Aneeta added a magical note to their cake, using a golden “Aladdin’s lamp” as a cake topper.

LOVE’S SWEET SURPRISE

Kayla & Josh

TEXT: Sherri Hildebrandt WEDDING: July 3, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Rolling Ridge Wedding and Event Center, St. Joseph

HONEYMOON: Eureka Springs, Arkansas

PHOTOGRAPHY

Narvold Photography

Kayla Kleinjan and Josh Harcourt’s love story has been full of surprises—among them, a seven-hour first date after meeting on Tinder. Josh’s proposal was also a surprise. One August evening in 2019, Kayla came home to three roses and a note—which was actually the first of several riddles that sent Kayla all over Springfield, Missouri, where the couple lived, ending with Josh in the town square on bended knee. COVID forced the couple to change their plans, venue and wedding date more than once, but the result, Kayla says, was perfect.

The floral details were a highlight, especially her bouquet, a cascade of coral, blush and pink peonies, ranunculus and roses. “There were flowers and greenery everywhere,” Kayla says—even on the llama she arranged as a surprise for Josh. The day after their wedding, the couple got married all over again at a 4th of July party during the Pelican Lake Boat Parade. The whole party organized a “shotgun wedding” entry, complete with the father of the bride driving her to the pontoon on a Jet Ski—and ended up taking first place.

WHEN DREAMS COME TRUE

Nikitta & Cole

TEXT: Sherri Hildebrandt WEDDING: October 2, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Legacy Hill Farm, Welch

HONEYMOON ROAD TRIP: Charleston, SC; Savannah, GA; Asheville, NC

Nikitta Klonne had a crush on Cole Mason from the moment they met—in third grade. And it’s still going strong. A few days after Nikitta’s 26th birthday in 2019, Cole proposed at a cabin getaway while serving breakfast in bed, with the help of their dogs, Louis and Millie (Millie carried the ring.). By the time the date arrived, they knew many family and friends couldn’t attend because of the pandemic, but “we had so much support,” Nikitta says. The couple’s best friend, Calvin, was their officiant; Nikitta’s close friend Kyle was her “best man”; Cole worked with his uncle Tony to design Nikitta’s rings, and Cole’s grandmother,

Bev, gifted Nikitta his late grandfather’s wedding ring to slip on Cole's finger at their ceremony, one of the most meaningful moments of the day. Nikitta describes her vision for the day as “Southwestern boho and vintage French country.” A longtime thrift-store shopper, she used her collection of antique furniture, milk-glass vases and other décor in the design. Fall-inspired hues of champagne gold, rust, cognac, mauve and green, along with a mix of textures—the men in corduroy, tweed and linen, and the women in satin, velvet and tulle—was the finishing touch on the warm and cozy wedding of their dreams.

HONEYMOON: Jackson Hole and Teton National Park, Wyoming

“A wedding is just a day, but a marriage is a lifetime.” That’s one of the themes that guided Sara Bielski and Francis Balogun as they celebrated their wedding. Another concept—“A unity of two families with different cultural backgrounds coming together as one”—was joyfully evident during their special day. The couple, who met through mutual acquaintances, brought friends and family together under blue skies and sunny smiles. “Our wedding day was a mix of American and Nigerian culture with a sprinkle of

sophistication and a whole lot of fun!” Sara says. They found the “wow” factor they wanted at Ashery Lane Farm. The traditional wedding ceremony took place before a circular gold arbor festooned with pampas grass and floral garlands, with bouquets, centerpieces and bridal party clothing in autumn colors such as navy and maroon with blush, gold, and mustard yellow accents. Following the wedding dinner, the couple and their attendants changed into Nigerian attire and danced the night away.

HEAVEN SENT Emily

& Tobin

TEXT: Sherri Hildebrandt WEDDING: September 10, 2020

CEREMONY: Family cabin near Cross Lake RECEPTION: Manhattan Beach Lodge, Cross Lake HONEYMOON: Napa Valley and Pebble Beach, California

Picture it: A warm July evening in 2018. Three young women dining at Smack Shack in Minneapolis, bemoaning the state of dating. “It wasn’t five minutes later that a handsome guy with kind eyes and a quick smile seemed to drop out of Heaven itself and land gracefully next to our table,” recalls Emily Coborn’s cousin Carolyn, one of the three. That guy was Tobin Wright, who recognized Emily from gatherings with mutual friends, visiting from Seattle that evening for work. Sparks flew. After a romantic sunset proposal in the Canary Islands, wedding plans got underway—then changed four times when

the pandemic closed the Canadian border, preventing Tobin’s family and friends from attending. Finally, the couple made the decision to marry at Emily’s family’s cabin, with 40 guests in person and another 150 attending via Zoom. But family was still very much a part of their day: Emily’s cousin performed the ceremony, her brother played the processional, and framed photos of family members who couldn’t attend hung on a tree near the ceremony site. Tobin’s Canadian heritage was also represented, with a late-night poutine snack bar, and even in his boutonniere, which featured a small Canadian maple leaf.

Nadine & Christian

TEXT: Sherri Hildebrandt WEDDING: October 10, 2020

RECEPTION: Fitzgerald Manor, Two Harbors

CEREMONY: Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Two Harbors

HONEYMOON: Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness

Days after Christian Murray proposed to Nadine Thibault on a secluded Northern California beach, the world shut down because of COVID-19. The big traditional wedding Nadine had always thought she’d have turned into an intimate weekend wedding with 16 guests—and “we truly could not be happier with how it all unfolded,” Nadine recounts. Everyone stayed at the Fitzgerald Manor B&B on the North Shore. The long weekend included hiking, campfires, and brilliant autumn colors and a dip in Lake Superior

added to the outdoorsy vibe. The bride’s lush, unstructured bouquet in deep greens and buff continued the rustic look, as did the groom’s pine-green suit. Nadine honored her grandmother, who had passed away four months before the wedding, by using her fine china and crystal—another perk of a small wedding, she says. “Above all, the intimate nature of our wedding allowed Christian and me to really focus on what was important,” Nadine says: “Celebrating our marriage and committing ourselves to each other for life.”

Holly & Brady

TEXT: Audrey Pickering WEDDING: September 11, 2021

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Machine Shop, Minneapolis

HONEYMOON: Ko Samui, Thailand

Despite overlapping two years at the University of WisconsinMadison, having a mutual friend and living a mere block away from each other, Brady Nelson and Holly Holte ended up crossing paths 12 years later on a Bumble date in New York City. They had already decided to get married and chosen a ring, but it was up to Brady to find the right moment on their trip to Paris in 2019. At a café after dinner, he spotted an ideal place in front of a fireplace and, under the guise of a bathroom break, went over and asked the couple there to momentarily vacate so he could propose. After Holly said yes, the

couple bought them their first round of champagne as an engaged pair. The wedding was designed like a relaxed dinner party, with food, music and drinks brought right to the guests. The industrial vibe of Machine Shop was transformed with a floral “fountain” and twinkle lights with pops of lavender, blush and raspberry. The photographer captured the couple’s first—and only—dance in an impromptu moment of light rain, and the festivities ended with everyone sitting on the floor as nieces and nephews threw flower petals in the air like confetti.

FAIRY TALE AT THE FARM

Samantha & Justin

TEXT: Audrey Pickering WEDDING: September 12, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: The Farm at Fairhill, Buffalo

HONEYMOON: Glacier National Park, Montana

After meeting online, Samantha Arnhalt and Justin Mikel solidified their relationship on a Valentine’s Day weekend trip to Duluth in 2020. During a walk in Enger Park, the couple stopped to take in the splendid view of the city and Lake Superior when Justin asked Samantha to marry him—and a hidden photographer captured both the view and their special moment. The couple wanted a bohemian/ Viking vibe for their wedding day, so Samantha set about gathering vintage rugs, velvet couches and rustic wooden tables. Samantha’s father built the wooden ceremony backdrop, and with the help of

her floral-savvy master-gardener mother, they festooned it with wildflowers and grasses. Another rustic addition: Samantha hung an old ladder over the head table and decorated it with dangling Edison bulbs and greenery. The couple incorporated their faith in the ceremony with prayers and a foot-washing ceremony in reference to Jesus washing the feet of his disciples. In a nod to their shared German heritage, they provided a pretzel bar, with homemade pretzels and sauces. The couple soaked in every moment together, and, “at times, it felt as though we were the only ones in the venue,” says Samantha.

Lexi & Brent

TEXT: Audrey Pickering WEDDING: September 20, 2020

Alexandra Robyn Photo + Design

“I may have set you up on a blind date …” Those words ignited the relationship between Lexi Bunger and Joseph “Brent” Sanders. Lexi, a NICU nurse, was introduced to Brent by a former co-worker whose husband worked with Brent. The pair hit it off and survived two years of long-distance dating before they settled in Minnesota. Brent proposed at her parents' house, but wanted to make it a little more unpredictable. Brent, Lexi and her family were playing Yahtzee and enjoying pizza. When it was Lexi’s turn to roll the dice, she discovered

a surprising new token: a sparkling ring. Brent quickly followed up with an emotional proposal that had everyone in tears. The couple had a September wedding glowing with jewel tones that highlighted the autumnal theme beautifully; they chose to have a smaller wedding with 57 guests. A family member officiated, and though the couple had written their vows, Brent ditched his at the last moment and improvised an even more heartfelt speech. The night ended with the big, joyful party Lexi had always dreamed of.

Ashley & Casey

TEXT: Audrey Pickering WEDDING: August 1, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: The Cottage Farmhouse, Glencoe

HONEYMOON: Maui, Hawaii (planned)

PHOTOGRAPHY

Tonya Hjort Photography

Ashley Gilbertson met Casey Nelson through a mutual friend at Mankato State University, and after eight months of friendship they began to date. They frequently got together to play tennis, bringing a new definition to the tennis term “love.” When the couple bought their first house in 2019 on Lake Minnetonka, they invited a small group of friends over for Ashley’s birthday. The group boarded the Al & Alma’s boat cruise for lunch and were opening presents; Casey’s present to Ashley was a card that read “Your present’s on the

dock” with binoculars accompanying it. She turned to look at their dock, and noticed a sign on their house that said, “Will you marry me?” then turned back to find Casey on one knee. With Ashley’s aunt as the officiant, the couple said their vows at a simple celebration. The décor incorporated greenery accented with ivory, blush and gold. The spacious venue provided a firepit and lawn games that matched the couple’s outdoors theme and added the perfect relaxed vibe for partying with friends and family.

WEDDING DAY BLESSING

Kathryn & Stephen

TEXT: Audrey Pickering WEDDING: October 10, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: The Lafayette Club, Minnetonka HONEYMOON: Riviera Maya, Mexico

As in many modern love stories, Kathryn Uhlendorf and Stephen Hahneman found each other through the dating app Bumble. Casual sports chat and meeting up at Cowboy Jack’s at a friend’s birthday led to a proposal a few years later. On the couple’s third anniversary of dating, Kathryn came home to find their apartment covered in rose petals and candles. She was even more surprised when decorations she thought were for their anniversary were instead for Stephen’s proposal. The couple celebrated their marriage on a sunny October day with socially distanced family

and friends. Sadly, Stephen had lost his mother, Kimberly, to breast cancer the year before their wedding; she had often mentioned she’d come back as a cardinal, and seeing a cardinal would mean she was near. Stephen and Kathryn say she manifested more often as an eagle, however, as the couple had many otherworldly encounters with eagles in the months preceding their wedding. No cardinals were spotted during their special day, but at sunset, as the couple walked hand in hand to the lake, an eagle flew over.

“For us, it was Kimberly, giving us her blessing.”

MAKING MUSIC TOGETHER

Katie & Alyssa

TEXT: Molly Thompson WEDDING: October 10, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: The Hutton House, Medicine Lake

HONEYMOON: French Polynesia

It all started when Katie Ward and her sister attended the 2016 Country Jam in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. They crashed at a friend’s house, where Alyssa Jackson and her sister also were staying. Their shared love for country music (and a couple of beers) forged a beginning connection and, after Katie “forgot” her cowboy boots, they saw each other again, sparking a forever connection. Two years later, on a snowy November morning, Alyssa proposed to Katie at the spectacular Banff National Park in Canada. Their wedding was filled with special moments, from putting love letters into a time capsule to photos with their English

bulldogs, Willow and Rosie. Both families played important roles in the wedding day festivities, with sisters as bridesmaids, nephews as “flower boys” and Alyssa’s grandfather officiating, using the same readings from when he married her parents 35 years before. The brides handled many of the details: They designed and printed the invitations, constructed a 6-foot cross for the ceremony site with help from Alyssa’s dad, and, with Katie’s dad and her sister Emileigh, created air plant containers as favors. The most touching moment? Their first dance under the stars, with friends and family all around.

FALL IN LOVE

Reann & Travis

TEXT: Molly Thompson WEDDING: October 3, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: The Skyroom at Red Wing Golf Course

HONEYMOON: To be determined

Reann Phaneuf and Travis Fogelberg met through Tinder, but the encouragement of friends helped them brave their first date fears. The proposal took place in their kitchen, followed by champagne and dinner at the same restaurant as their first date. Wedding festivities took place on a perfect fall weekend, with family and friends helping prepare for and participate in the service. The bride’s uncle officiated, and the bride’s grandmother and groom’s uncle did the readings. The bridesmaids’ dresses and

flowers incorporated autumn tones of green and burnt orange, and a stunning custom arbor spray graced the entry arch. In another installation, greenery climbed along the side of the fireplace, which was the backdrop for the ceremony, and the same installation was then repurposed for the reception. The guests dined on walleye and sirloin, followed by cake pops and cupcakes. “It was a day filled with many laughs, hugs, tears and happiness,” says Reann. “It was the fall wedding of our dreams.”

TEXT: Molly Thompson WEDDING: October 16, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Calhoun Beach Club, Minneapolis

HONEYMOON: Greece (planned)

PHOTOGRAPHY

Amanda Nippoldt Photography

Rachel Nichols and John Callahan share a love of travel, so it was only fitting that the proposal took place in one of the many international destinations they’ve visited. The two, who met at a Halloween party in 2014, were taking a midnight stroll in Amsterdam. John had waited all day for the perfect place to ask Rachel to marry him; the moment came at a quiet canal-side bench beneath twinkling Christmas lights. In an intimate ceremony of family and friends—postponed for months because of the pandemic—the two were married

in the fall. Rose-gold accents, from their wedding rings to the numbers on the reception tables, were a unifying theme. For a personal touch, each table also bore the name of one of the couple’s favorite cities. Burgundy was added to the original blush, mauve and white floral arrangement colors that teamed with the changing leaves outside. From the moment John saw Rachel in her gown to when their eyes met as she walked down the aisle to their song, “’Til Kingdom Come,” it was a mesmerizing day filled with moments to be cherished always.

CROSS-COUNTRY ROMANCE

Samantha & Mick

TEXT: Molly Thompson WEDDING: September 20, 2020

HONEYMOON: To be determined

PHOTOGRAPHY

Trish Allison Photography

Samantha Hart and Mick Hughes had their first date on Cinco de Mayo 2018 in California, got engaged during Fashion Week in New York, where Samantha had been modeling, and had the perfect farm wedding with friends and family from across the country. (“We took every precaution,” Samantha notes.) The couple sought a venue with lots of space and natural light for their formal wedding with a sophisticated, romantic feel. Willow trees and grassy, open spaces graced their outdoor ceremony site, with soft blues, purples and pinks mingling in

the attendants’ attire and floral arrangements. The couple’s dog, Kiera, played ring bearer; at the reception, and guests sipped on drinks named for the couple’s pets. A very special moment came right after the ceremony. “After changing our wedding date two times, we found out we were pregnant. We were so excited,” Samantha says. Since getting together with friends and family was so hard in 2020, they surprised their guests with a gender reveal, announcing via blue smoke and confetti that they would soon welcome a baby boy.

SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY

Allie & Nate

TEXT: Molly Thompson WEDDING: August 27, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Ashery Lane, Mayer HONEYMOON: Jackson Hole, Wyoming

PHOTOGRAPHY

Kate Becker Photography

Allison Olsen and Nathaniel Champion met as colleagues in New York, but it wasn’t until two years later, when they were living California, that Nate proposed, a few days before Christmas 2018. Allie was opening a big, beautifully wrapped gift, but it was the small gift inside that was the real surprise. Before she knew it, Nate was on one knee as she opened the velvet box containing the ring as their dog, Cowboy, looked on. The next day, the two flew to Allie's hometown in Minnesota and shared the joyous news with her family. The wedding was stunning, though it was

reconfigured a few times due to COVID-19. Gorgeous floral details in summery oranges, creamy whites and warm yellows, along with a huge hydrangea wreath behind the head table, played an important role, while blue and green hydrangea centerpieces added to the seasonal vibe. A sweet ceremony followed by heartfelt speeches made the day even more meaningful, especially after being separated from friends and family for so long, it was especially meaningful. And a year after the wedding, the couple will add to the family with a baby girl! *

VICK PHOTOGRAPHY

ANDREW VICK, THE HEAD OF THE TEAM AT VICK PHOTOGRAPHY, knows the importance of a good story, and weddings make for some of the best. “We pride ourselves in being there to capture all of those moments you see, along with the quiet ones that happen just off to the side of the main action,” his website notes. “From a parent wiping a concealed tear to your best friend laughing hysterically at the toasts in the background, we’re there to document it all.” Vick is in love with learning about the world and the people whose marriages he captures for generations to come. He has documented weddings around the world, from quiet corners of the Twin Cities to the emerald hills of Ireland, from the waters (yes, waters!) of Key Largo to the deserts of Arizona. And for every wedding Vick photographs, a portion of the profits goes to aid a community in Guatemala … making a special day even more special.

INSTANT REQUEST DJ

YOUR WEDDING IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DAYS OF YOUR LIFE, so getting the details just right can make the difference between creating happy memories for you and your guests or sending everyone home with a headache. Instant Request knows exactly how to make happy memories even happier. When Shawn Plante started the business in 1980, his goal was to provide lively dance music that would pack the dance floor but also to keep the services classy. And more than 40 years later, that’s still happening. Instant Request’s DJs make it a point to learn about their couples, the music they like, and the vibe they want on their special day. From ceremony to reception, no matter your needs, Instant Request can match music and a DJ to suit your style. The reviews back up the promises: “The best!” “Flawless!” and “Above and beyond” are only a few comments from recently wed couples who happily sing the praises of Instant Request DJ.

SOME OF OUR FAVORITE MOMENTS FROM THE YEAR IN WEDDINGS

BEST INVITATION SUITE AUTUMN MADE CO

BEST FLORAL DESIGN STUDIO C FLORAL

Wearing your florals is a growing trend, and Christi Poppler of Studio C Floral is leading the way with innovative accessories. “The wearables started out as a creative COVID project with my daughter Lily, the photographer, and actually ended up being her senior project,” says Poppler.

“She wanted to showcase some of the many cultures represented at her school.” After consulting with everyone participating in the shoot, they came up with floral pieces that best represented their heritages by using botanicals indigenous to their respective countries and fashioned them in styles like those traditionally worn in their regions. Poppler and her daughter enjoyed the project so much that they have continued creating and photographing other wearables, such as these earrings made of Spider Man Grevillea.

Minimalist invitation suites are a trend that is here to stay, and Autumn Bungum, owner and designer behind Autumn Made Co combined neutral fall colors and earthy textures for this contemporary suite. A mix of handmade paper, card stock and vellum is paired with a thoughtful and unexpected ingredient: pressed dried florals in the envelope liner. A simple, subtle line drawing of a leaf ties it all together with seasonal style. “Of course, it also happens to be my favorite season, so it was a fun project to dream up,” says Bungum.

BEST EVENT DESIGN LAINE PALM DESIGNS

Creative mastermind Laine Palm proves that pops of color can play well with neutrals in this modern, styled shoot at Machine Shop. A chic lounge area welcomes guests to take a break from the dance floor in cool blues and warm rust tones that can work for any season, and a quirky, geometric installation by Girl Friday with whimsical blooms by Apricot Floral adds a playful touch to the affair. “We wanted to create a large installation to show people that an install in Machine Shop doesn’t have to always be on the truss,” says Palm of their innovative use of space.

BEST DRESSED “FLORA” GOWN BY TLT BY TARA LATOUR

Meet “Flora,” a romantic peach, floral brocade gown designed by Minnesota’s own Tara LaTour. A must-have for the nontraditional bride who wants a fun print and a pop of color, this gown features a net inset and sweetheart neckline that can be paired with a removable and customizable off-the-shoulder band to create a strapless, one-shoulder, or off-the-shoulder style.

“Flora” is part of LaTour’s newly revamped signature brand, TLT by Tara LaTour, from the “Painter in the Garden” collection.

Inspired by LaTour’s artist grandmother and the time they spent painting together in her grandparents’ garden, each gown in the collection hints at blooms, brushstrokes and memories shared.

BEST CATERING IDEA NOSH AND GATHER WITH REVEL & FLOURISH

Whether you’re planning an intimate gathering, a backyard bachelorette party, or setting the scene for a proposal, Nosh and Gather’s creative new Noshnics are a feast for both the eyes and the palate. These luxe customized picnic experiences are created by Liza Atkinson, founder of Nosh and Gather, in partnership with the designers at Revel & Flourish. Together, they bring the boho picnic vibe for two to eight people with catered food, including a charcuterie board, fancy cookies, and some seasonal blooms for an added touch of charm.

“They show up like Mary Poppins with rugs and pillows and tableware to make it happen, and two hours later, they come back to whisk it all away,” Atkinson says of her helpers at Revel & Flourish.

PHOTO EMPIRIA STUDIOS

If you’re up for a side of adventure with your wedding photos, then Athena Hays of Empiria Studios is the photographer for you. This newlywed couple portrait atop a cliff overlooking the dramatic shores of Lake Superior shows that Athena will literally go the distance for you. Besides her creativity to come up with the idyllic setting, her technical know-how takes it up a notch. “This image is actually 12 images stitched together to get a shallow depth of field while still having that panoramic, wide perspective,” Athena says.

BEST CAKE HEY THERE, CUPCAKE

This splendid treat by Chelsea Dudek, owner and cake artist of Hey There, Cupcake, is almost too pretty to eat. “I was going for a romantic, fine art feel with lots of detail,” says Dudek of her inspiration. Iced with buttercream, Dudek added texture with handrolled and torn fondant and then hand-painted it in soft, romantic shades of pink. Topping it off are fondant flowers and edible gold paint and luster dust for an added level of elegance.
