Paige absolutely kept our hopes and dreams very high even when we were worried things weren’t working out as we wanted them to. HELLO ! For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Sonja Babich, and I am the new owner and CEO of Minnesota Bride. But one other title—and one of my favorites—is being the No. 1 cheerleader for the Minnesota wedding community and for the Minnesota Bride team!
Having been a wedding professional has been an asset for our team and for the direction of our future as a company. As a team, we strive to care about all those little details with publishing leading-edge ideas and trends and sharing those real wedding stories.
We know all the love and details that go into a wedding day, from the first email communication to the final wedding day good-bye hug. All the details matter with each couple, and no wedding day is the exact same. Nothing warms my heart more than seeing wedding dreams become a reality with the help of our talented wedding professionals. The added bonus is that we get to share it with our readers and followers.
This past year made me realize that dreams can come true. You have to set your goals high, say them out loud, put in long days and hours, and follow that gut feeling to reach those dreams. Wedding professionals do that for our engaged couples. They are the visionaries and dreamers, who do the hard work and continue to challenge themselves to be greater, be more leading edge and continue making those wedding dreams a reality for their wedding couples. Nothing brings greater joy to a wedding professional than seeing those wedding day smiles and receiving those giant wedding day hugs, because that tells them that they did it and they did it perfectly, just like the couples always imagined.
Thank you to our readers, followers, Minnesota wedding industry professionals and supporters for loving this wonderful magazine and brand for the past 30 years, and for bringing us along on your wedding planning journey.
Cheers to you all and cheers to the next 30!

A BEAUTIFUL WEDDING and environmental awareness need not be mutually exclusive. Whether you’re committed to sav ing the planet or just hoping to create some awareness through small changes, there are many ways you can make an impact.
1. PERSONALIZED POSIES – Locally sourced flowers from Green Goddess Floral are arranged using a pin frog rather than floral foam (which is increasingly being phased out by florists because it breaks down into microplastics that can be harmful to aquatic life and water supplies). Green Goddess will also work with couples who aren’t looking for large floral displays but prefer to work on an à la carte basis.
2. IN GOOD TASTE – The crudité cup at far left is a vegan delight in a glass, created by Chowgirls Catering. The nondairy dip is made with beet and fava beans, served with fresh veggies including biodiverse carrots, colorful cauliflower, mini cucumbers, green beans, snap peas and garnished with a fresh dill frond and pansies (and yes, they are edible!). At right, try a vegan pasta dish with a house-made “meatball” composed of black beans, sweet potato, red bell pepper and parsnips tossed with basil, mint, lemon pesto and pine nuts.
3. SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL – From Amy’s Cupcake Shoppe comes this piquant vegan and gluten-free beauty. Vegan, of course, means it contains no animal products; animal agriculture accounts for the largest source of methane emissions in the US.
4. DOUBLY ELEGANT – Dramatically different textures make this combo twice as nice. The chic shimmer of the pleated white satin jacket by House of KLynn is the perfect background for a colorful corsage of fresh mixed blossoms and greens by Green Goddess Floral.
5. ALL TIED UP – A big bouquet of mixed florals captures fall colors in an unstructured, casual arrangement. Among the flowers are ranunculus, roses, spirea, tulips and frittalaria. A velvet ribbon wrapped around the stems adds a further touch of romance. Jeni Becht of Green Goddess Floral has a small urban flower farm and also buys locally from Northerly Flora flower farm and Twin Cities Flower Exchange, a flower co-op.
6. HONORING THE EARTH – Keeping sustainability in mind, Eloise and Marvin used recycled paper in muted earth tones for their invitation suite by Champagne Press. On the round insert card they acknowledge “the ancestral and traditional lands of the Dakota people” and also note they “give thanks for the opportunity to be wed on their traditional homeland.” A further pledge: “As stewards of this earth, we will plant trees to give back some of what we take.” The cream-colored blossoms accompanying the stationery are particularly sustainable: They are handmade using sola wood from the tapioca plant.

Looking for a sleek venue with a contemporary vibe and historic past? The Glass House at the edge of downtown Minneapolis might fit the bill. Repurposed from an old window factory, the Glass House was purchased, renovated and moved into the 30,000-square-foot industrial warehouse by Hennepin Made owner Jackson Schwartz, who envisioned a space that would welcome people to gather comfortably for a variety of events.
The pristine, airy space lends itself beautifully to a surfeit of décor. Lists are available with preferred vendors for flowers, catering, décor, photography and planning.
The Glass House has three unique spaces: the Holden Room, the Glenwood Lounge and the Courtyard can cater to almost any occasion.
• The Holden Room, with a capacity for 250 seated or 400 standing for cocktail hour, features custom 8-foot mobile walls, live plants and trees, a large garage door opening up to the courtyard, and handcrafted light fixtures.
• The cozy Glenwood Lounge is perfect for rehearsal dinners (seats 50; cocktail space for 125) and other more intimate gatherings.
• Just outside the Holden Room is the Courtyard, which features a lush grass lawn, landscaping and plants. It can accommodate as many as 350 for a cocktail hour.
A private parking lot has 60 spaces, but more parking is available at the adjacent Minneapolis Farmers Market. One surprising feature of the Glass House is an actual glassblowing studio right behind the main reception space, and a glassblowing experience can be added to any event. Further, all the lighting throughout the space was designed and produced onsite by Hennepin Made. @glasshousemn

A little bit of Paris has come to Minneapolis via Maison Margaux, the newest endeavor by Twin Cities restaurateur David Fhima. The combination restaurant – event center – speakeasy “has been a dream of Chef Fhima’s for a very long time,” says Lori Fhima, David Fhima’s wife and business partner. “The Moulin Rouge/La Belle Epoque theme has been reeling around in each new space we have opened for the past 12 years, and we finally found a pearl (margaux, in French) in the North Loop that was the perfect place to implement the concept.”
That “pearl” is the 140-year-old building that housed the Twin Cities’ last remaining furrier, Ribnick Luxury Outerwear, bought in 1945 by Isaac Ribnick. The business remained until his grandson, Bill, retired in 2021.
“Our ambiance is unique,” Lori Fhima says. “We have various event spaces and can accommodate many styles of soirees, from weddings to rehearsal dinners and birthdays to business meetings. The design and historic nature of the building offer a specific atmosphere of simple elegance.”
Because of the building’s age and historical significance, there were strict guidelines to follow during the extensive renovation. Firm Ground Architecture and Greiner Construction worked closely with David Fhima and the Historic Preservation Commission. Fhima was involved every step of the way, choosing every tile, every wallpaper, and every chair to satisfy his vision.
Maison Margaux has various rooms available with capacity for 40 to 100 people, with the option to buy out the entire restaurant for a larger crowd. Forty-five parking spots are available, and valet service will be on hand.
Because it’s first and foremost a bistro and bar, outside food and vendors are not permitted but a menu offering typical French brasserie fare—with a hint of Mediterranean—seems certain to satisfy almost any palate.
Eager to be an integral addition to the North Loop dining scene, the Fhimas are committed to the community and hope to be staffed largely by BIPOC employees. They also aim for a festive and welcoming atmosphere. “When you come to Maison Margaux,” Lori Fhima says, “it is meant to feel as if you walked into a friend’s dining room, from the ambiance to the dining experience.” @maisonmargeauxmpls
—Sherri HildebrandtFrom the humble beginnings of working as a cake decorator at Target to being featured on the Food Network’s Spring Baking Championship, Jai Xiong can do it all when it comes to pastry. Her baking inspiration has always been her mother, who constantly shared her joy of cooking with others. “It brought me so much joy just watching her creativity shine in the kitchen and the happiness it brings her to share her food with others,” Xiong says.
Xiong has been in the baking industry for nearly a decade, after completing her associate degree at Le Cordon Bleu in baking and pastry. She worked with small businesses and large corporations before she launched her business, Amour Patisserie, in 2021 in St. Paul.
A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity presented itself when she got an email from a Food Network producer about being part of the Spring Baking Championship. After a month of questioning if the timing was right when her business was still so new, she accepted the offer. The show aired on March 6; she said it was “the most mind-challenging yet healing experience” she ever had, and that “none of my past competitions could have ever prepared me for what I walked into at the Spring Baking Championship.”
Amour Patisserie is also known for bento cakes and luxury petit gâteaux desserts, but the real showstoppers are Xiong’s wedding cakes, which definitely live up to her shop’s motto: “Where artistry meets flavor, and every bite is a masterpiece.” @amourpatisseriemn
—Emma EstebGrooming trends are on the rise for men, especially when it comes to their big day, according to some local experts at Martin Patrick 3 in downtown Minneapolis.
The first big trend seen by the shop’s Chavis Vasquez is fragrances. He says fragrance can act as its own “memento box in a bottle” and considers curating a signature fragrance for couples as a powerful way to capture the fleeting moments of the wedding milestones.
Second on the list is skin care. Todd Fliginger of MP3 thinks that all men are—or should be— starting to care more for their skin. According to Fliginger, grooms are using products such as exfoliants, face wash, toner, eye cream, moisturizer and sun block. He notes that some grooms are even deciding to use cosmetics on their wedding day.
Hair is a whole different ballpark, but a big part of men’s grooming trends all the same. Sofi Kushnir from MP3’s in-house barber shop Marty’s says that popular styles include clean fades with length and curl on top. But there’s also an increase of grown-out, shoulder-length hair. @martinpatrick3
—Adriana Dominguez-NelsonImagine a gentle breeze blowing across the calm waters of a Minnesota lake at sunset as native grasses rustle softly nearby. This could be the site of your wedding ceremony at Reeds & Rushes, a new event venue that opened in June, just outside Howard Lake on Mallard Pass Lake.
“The highest priority on our wish list when we started our search was waterfront property,” says Maddie Gruidl, who with her husband, Curtis, developed the idea over the past three years. “Mallard Pass Lake is going to provide a stunning backdrop for all couples and ensure unique photo opportunities throughout the year,” she adds.
Situated on 5½ acres, the lakeside property has plenty of beautiful outdoor settings, as well as a 7,000-squarefoot building. The Great Hall can accommodate 230 for a seated ceremony or reception. The Fireside Hall has room for 70 at a seated service and 230 for cocktail hour. Couples can bring in their caterer of choice; there’s a prep kitchen to meet their needs.
The décor is modern with warm, inviting touches in tones of charcoal and cream with maple cabinetry. “We drew inspiration from Minnesota’s Scandinavian heritage,” Gruidl says.
The location also meets a need for another event venue beyond the Twin Cities. “Being close to the Twin Cities is amazing, but we’re also eager to provide an event venue for the surrounding townships and smaller communities,” Gruidl says.
Yard games and an outdoor fireplace are also available, and inside, there’s the Alder Suite, a lounge with a fullswing golf and sports simulator, a kitchenette and flat-screen TV.
Reeds & Rushes is taking bookings and is offering a special rate for couples who have their wedding with them during their inaugural year (until May 1, 2024).
@randrvenue
—Sherri HildebrandtWith its European aesthetic, Bavaria Downs is one of the Twin Cities’ most popular wedding venues. Now the luxury establishment in the west metro has added a new venue to its grounds: Equestria West.
While maintaining that European air, the new addition has an equestrian twist, and employs organic materials such as copper, leather, stone and wood. Located in Chaska about 25 minutes from the Twin Cities it’s what Kayla Unmacht, a representative of Equestria West, calls “a getaway without going away.”
Equestria West plans to host only one event per day, giving couples the option of two ballrooms and two outdoor ceremony sites. Capacity ranges from 50 to 400, perfect for any size wedding. There are also designated getting-ready rooms for brides and grooms.
But don’t wait to reserve your date. Unmacht says that for a Saturday wedding, 18 months out is best. There are also specific packages designed for couples who have a shorter time frame. @equestria_west *

wedding or event in our event venues?
ALL YOUR LIFE YOU’VE FANTASIZED ABOUT what you’ll wear on your wedding day. Perhaps you imagined s a diaphanous cloud of tulle and silk … or a snappy bespoke tux that hinted at the Roaring ’20s … or an overhaul of Grandma’s charming vintage gown. Now the time has come; you’re engaged! You want that special outfit—but where is it? You’ve looked everywhere, tried on dozens of outfits, but nothing really looks or feels quite right. It isn’t you. Maybe it’s time to consider custom-made attire. Here are some insights from three local professionals who can insure you’ll look your best on your big day.
Joy Teiken was a Peace Corps volunteer, a high school art teacher and, since 2003, a designer and creator of remarkable gowns that range from playful to provocative. “Most of my brides [come to me via] word of mouth and already have a sense of the work I do,” she says. “They enjoy the creative process of seeing fabric draped on their body and watching the dress take shape through the fittings.”
Teiken begins the process by meeting with a bride-to-be, discussing not only how she wants to look, but how she
wants to feel. At a second in-person meeting, Teiken will work through various physical concepts, pinning and draping the fabric.
The custom design process timeline depends on the client and the dress. “I have fabric in my studio but usually I order the fabric once we have an idea of the dress. After the fabric has arrived we do a draping appointment and make a plan for the dress, then schedule fittings.”
The timeline varies for every client and every gown. “I’ve done dresses in a matter of weeks to over a year,” she says. “Ideally, I prefer six months from start to finish.” @joynoelle.atelier
CLOTHIER DANIEL STENSGAARD
Daniel Stensgaard has been in the custom clothing business for more than 30 years, and his bespoke suits, tuxes and accessories are known and admired throughout the Twin Cities.
“We make suits for any and every BODY,” says Alysha Haugen, Daniel’s sales and marketing manager. “We work with men, women, non-binary and more. … The main question we ask clients is, ‘How do you want to look?’ This really helps us determine how we will fit you for a suit and gauge what styles and designs we will show you.”
Good customer service, along with fabulous fabrics, attention to detail and knowing the client are key to Daniel’s success. “We recommend [the client] coming in with an idea or inspiration from photos. However … part of our job is to help turn your ideas into reality,” Haugen says. “First, we listen and learn about a client then about their venue, wedding season, and colors of the wedding party to help determine what will look best on them.”
Daniel’s recommends no less than seven or eight weeks before the wedding to get started, but “the sooner, the better!” Haugen stresses. After a consult, there is an initial fitting then a second meeting to try on the suit. If necessary, a third fitting is scheduled after any further alterations.
For the groom or groomsmen in a rush, Daniel’s has a package “that we can get to the client in 10 days including the alterations. We have a large variety of colors and fabrics to choose from,” Haugen says. @danielscustomclothing
You might have found a wonderful gown, but to make it the perfect gown, it probably needs some adjustments. That’s where Heather Baldridge comes in. Baldridge has been plying her needle skills for more than 35 years and has a wealth of good advice when it comes to alterations.
“It isn’t uncommon to do redesigns on existing wedding dresses,” she says. The usual alterations are in the straps, bodice and hem, and adding a bustle to the train to shorten it for the reception. Some brides want to change the sleeves or neckline, others might ask if the back can be cut down or a train shortened.
A sentimental bride might wonder if Baldridge can alter her mother’s or grandmother’s gown—but that depends. “Some that I have seen are much too fragile for the bride to wear, as over time the fabric has gotten very delicate, too delicate to wear again.” In that case, she offers the alternative of having a bit of lace or fabric from the heirloom gown worked into the contemporary gown, maybe as part of the lining or in a heart shape. She also likes to hide a little “something blue” surprise in every dress she works on.
Baldridge encourages a bride to come to her as soon as she’s ordered her dress—as much as a year out—even though the first alteration appointment may be just three or four months prior to the wedding. At least two fittings will be necessary, and more are not uncommon. Dresses are usually ready to pick up about three weeks before the wedding. And what about nervous weight gains or losses? “I educate my brides on the weight loss, or gain … so they understand what they need to do with whatever style of dress they are wearing. At times, we have last-minute changes but not many, as we talk about the fit and body weight throughout the whole process.”
Working with brides on their gowns puts Baldridge in her happy place. “It is so fun and rewarding for me to see a bride’s dress transform into a dress that fits only her. It makes me so happy when a bride says she loved her dress from the beginning, but now I have made her fall in love with her dress all over again!”

An eclectic palette of striking colors paired with classic black and white sets the tone for the funky dinner-party atmosphere. The menu cards carry through the vibe, with a fun hand-lettered font inviting guests to chow down, while gold-painted shells serve as salt and pepper mini-dishes for a touch of glam. A rich, red wine brings out the delicate flavors of salmon mousse, crispy rice canapé with spicy tuna and wasabi greens, and tinned fish charcuterie with crackers and grilled citrus, with a scallop aquachile with white onion, cucumber, cilantro and kumquat that’s plated to perfection. Pear poached in white wine and vanilla bean makes a sweet ending to the luxurious feast.

Menus with pops of chartreuse and whimsical illustrations and gold-tone/acrylic utensils continue the modern, carefree vibe.

Black candlesticks and bold table numbers on gray stone accent the tablescape.
A single delicate quail egg tops off the place setting alongside a menu of layered papers and twine.
Josie relaxes before her big moment in Tara LaTour’s “Laurel” gown in heavy crêpe with bishop sleeves, lace cuffs and softly draping train for low-key romance.
Hunt Wright Design Co.’s elegant stationery suite extends the natural vibe with textured paper and colors of land and sky.

Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, and it can take a team of dedicated and knowledgeable specialists to pull it off. The dress, the décor, the venue, the countless vendors—there are so many options and only so much time to research and arrange it all. So where do you begin? Well, you can start right here. Brides and grooms of Minnesota have voted for the people, places and businesses that helped make their dreams come true, so you can count on this list to help you get hitched, too.

D’AMICO CATERING
D’Amico doesn’t shy away from creativity, neither in flavor nor in presentation and this display is a work of culinary art. Created as a part of a 13-course meal, this Dashi egg custard with bacon nori bread crumb, hamachi tartare, shiso salad, togarashi and yuzu mist is masterfully plated in a way that not only focuses on ingredients, but also plays with the aesthetic appeal of colors, textures and shapes.

For this celebration, the artistic brilliance behind de Vasco’s Daughters and an extraordinary fusion of unconventional botanical elements by Ginger
Root MPLS transport guests to a dreamy realm where imagination and nature intertwine. LOCATED ON 240 ACRES OF LAND just a short distance from the Twin Cities, Bavaria Downs boasts two stunning venues, namely the Edward Anne Estate and Equestria West, each offering its own unique charm and appeal.
The Edward Anne Estate, originally constructed for the Redmond family, underwent a period of neglect before being transformed into a sought-after wedding venue. Its rich history and elegant architecture make it a favorite among couples looking for a touch of sophistication and grandeur on their special day.
Equestria West, which opened its doors in June of this year, presents a distinct blend of luxury and equestrian-inspired elements. In addition to its visual allure, Equestria West also prioritizes sustainability by utilizing solar power as a renewable energy source, exemplifying its commitment to eco-conscious practices. Despite its proximity to the bustling cities, Bavaria Downs’ serene surroundings and enchanting venues create a tranquil atmosphere, providing couples and their guests with a unique getaway experience. The combination of exceptional staff, breathtaking location, and a touch of magic has earned Bavaria Downs its reputation as a top-tier wedding venue.
@bavariadowns —Adriana Dominguez-Nelson & Megan WhiteJENNA CULLEY, born and raised in Wisconsin, began her career in New York where she learned how to plan, create, execute, and design extravagant events. She returned to the Midwest with an abundance of experience and launched Jenna Culley Events in 2012. The main goal of her company is to relieve the stress of planning a wedding and create a picture-perfect day. Culley’s big-city mentality paired with her Midwestern roots creates the perfect balance for event planning in the Twin Cities area, and her team handles every detail for a smooth process. This past year, Culley also acquired Linen Effects, one of the most well-known and respected event and décor rental companies in the Twin Cities. She has been a longtime client of the company and Don Jensen, the former owner, believed that she could carry on Linen Effect’s legacy as Culley’s focus on design with her planning clients made her a natural fit for the role. @jennaculleyevents

Capturing emotion—the raw, unfiltered moments that define you as a couple and show you as your best self— that’s the goal. In the in-between moments—the ones that happen after a posed smile, when you’re goofing around with your other half, forgetting a picture is being taken. And in capitalizing on natural surroundings, utilizing the bold and industrial and natural to explore the balance between a little bit wild and a little bit tame. Because at the end of the day, it’s about capturing the memories and remembering the details—one picture at a time. typeandtimber.com | Typeandtimber.photo@gmail.com

The whole concept stemmed from Pantone announcing their 2023 color of the year as Viva Magenta. I felt like magenta exuded ‘new playful puppy love’ and would be a perfect shade for couples to incorporate in their wedding palettes.

Honeymoon: ITALY & GREECE
Anna Brunelle and Max Mazumdar’s summer wedding day was steeped in tradition, drawing inspiration from the bride’s Native American culture and the groom’s Indian heritage. The result was a vibrant, contemporary fête that effortlessly fused their respective backgrounds. The Indian rehearsal dinner featured East Indian décor, a henna artist and lavish outfits. The day of their wedding, Style-Architects Weddings & Events (owned by the groom’s mother) delivered a design that perfectly reflected Anna’s cheery, energetic personality and Max’s purposeful and charming nature. The venue, Urban Daisy, was filled with rich florals in hues of pink, orange and yellow with touches of black. Hanging installations of dyed leaves in bright colors seemed to float in the air. Anna and Max said their vows in a circular set-up that included a classic Ojibwe blanket ceremony in which the bride’s and groom’s mothers wrap them in a blanket as a sign of love and support. Anna held an eagle feather in her bouquet, a huge honor in Ojibwe culture that requires a special license from the tribe. The couple also incorporated poems that had been read at their parents’ weddings into their own ceremony. From the first look and humorous yet sentimental ceremony to the late-night pizza rolls and ’90s music, their day was quintessentially Anna and Max.

Surrounded by lush, rolling hills, Bavaria Downs in Chaska was the ideal locale for Kiera Nelson and Neal Pionk’s midsummer soirée. Seeking a cottage-garden feel, bride and groom wanted to bring the space to life with an abundance of fresh flowers, and Sadie’s Floral delivered. The ceremony aisle was embellished with white petals and stunning arrangements of neutral blooms. Kiera held a pageant-style bouquet of orchids, beautifully matching her gown’s floral appliqués. Bowers of greenery and illuminated chandeliers made for an enchanting ambience as Kiera and Neal became husband and wife. Cocktail hour included yard games, hors d’oeuvres for the adults and a balloon artist and custom coloring books for the kids. Loved ones enjoyed visiting with the couple’s dogs in attendanwce, Neko and Surly, featured on the cute cocktail napkins. Michelle Green and Christopher Hightower’s love story stood the test of time — and COVID —while Michelle, a family medicine doctor, spent long days and nights practically living in the El Paso hospital where she was doing her residency. The couple was able to get away to Phoenix for a few days over Christmas 2020, and on Christmas Eve, Christopher’s surprise proposal during an unexpected lakeside stroll brought tears to Michelle’s eyes. Tradition and family were at the forefront of their nuptials at The Hutton House. The couple opted for a rich palette of blue, burgundy and gold. Michelle gave Jamie Spellerberg of Wilderland Floral full rein for the design, yielding luxe blooms in shades of red and white in the bouquets, centerpieces and an impressive floral arch. As Michelle’s family is from Ghana and Nigeria, the couple wanted to include elements of her culture into the wedding. After their traditional American ceremony, bride, groom, their parents and the 26-person wedding party changed into custom-made traditional West African outfits. For a twist on the usual guest book, Michelle and Chris laid out Polaroid cameras for their guests to take a picture of themselves and tape it into the book with a small note. To commemorate the Hightowers’ magical wedding day, guests left with drawings from a sketch artist.

Ceremony & Reception: MACHINE SHOP, MINNEAPOLIS Honeymoon: PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO
The main goal of Kyle Jensen and Josh Plattner’s fall wedding day was to simply have fun and celebrate with friends and family — and that’s exactly what they did. Nestled in Northeast Minneapolis, the Machine Shop’s industrial details, mixed metals and plenty of natural light fit the couple’s taste perfectly, with a plethora of plants and greenery adding the “natural” in their natural-meets-industrial vision. In keeping with their mission of fun, the pair held a preliminary and post-ceremony cocktail hour. “No reason the party should wait until after we’re married!” Kyle says. The ceremony was stunning as installations of Robellini palm, smilax and salal flawlessly framed the couple as they exchanged vows. Equally gorgeous, the reception tables were adorned with candles and foliage that appeared to be growing out of the floor. There was not a dry eye in the crowd during the simultaneously hilarious and touching toasts from Kyle’s and Josh’s brothers. “It felt surreal to see all the important people in our lives coming together in one place at one time, just for us,” Kyle says.

Ceremony: ENGER TOWER, DULUTH
Reception: CLYDE IRONWORKS, DULUTH
Honeymoon: GRENADA
Nicole Nemec and Matthew Becks officially tied the knot at their micro-wedding during the pandemic, but still wanted the boho celebration they had always dreamed of. The two shared a first look at Duluth’s Aerial Lift Bridge, which Michelle counts as one of her favorite moments of the day. She wore the Rue de Seine gown she had fallen in love with at the start of her quest, but traded the traditional veil for a more daring white hat. Not to be outdone, Matt wore an all-black ensemble accented with an eye-catching boutonniere. The ceremony at Enger Tower began with the couple’s children as flower girl and ring-bearers, followed by emotional vows with Matt’s uncle officiating. After a Champagne toast send-off, the party moved on to Clyde Iron Works, transformed with a moody palette of black, burgundy and gold to create a romantic vibe with an eclectic touch. Bountiful florals and pampas grasses in red and neutral hues accented the black linen-topped tables. As a sweet ending to the dreamy day, guests enjoyed cake pops before dancing the night away.

When Hannah Flood and Dave Mylrea started the wedding planning process, the only option for the fun-loving couple was to tie the knot on New Year’s Eve. Choosing a venue was also easy, as the couple had called Northeast Minneapolis home for nearly three years and coincidentally learned The Whim was once home to a family business on Dave’s side. On their wedding day, Hannah wore a ravishing fit-and-flare gown, with bridesmaids in gold gowns of their choice, adhering to the holiday theme. Hannah and Dave each have one remaining grandmother, and it was especially meaningful to have them present, as well as for Dave’s Uncle Russ to officiate. The industrial-chic space was elegantly decorated in a palette of white, green and gold with neutral florals and greenery, while a canopy of string lights and glowing candles created a cozy ambience. “We liked how it was all laid-back but felt special and elevated for the holiday,” Hannah says. After “I do’s” the newlyweds stepped outside by themselves to pop a celebratory bottle of Champagne. When the clock struck midnight, Hannah, Dave and their 250 guests rang in the new year together—a magical moment, Hannah says.

Ceremony & Reception: WOODHAVEN WEDDINGS & EVENTS, CANNON FALLS
Honeymoon: GRAND TETONS AND JACKSON, WYOMING
After a surreal, snowy proposal in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park, Kallan Swenson and Josh Klassen wed back in Minnesota in a modern, colorful ceremony at Woodhaven Weddings & Events. As a cover model for Minnesota Bride and a wedding planner herself, Kallan had her own ideas for the couple’s big day. Bridesmaids wore all-white jumpsuits for a cohesive look to make the bold florals pop. Fresh and flirty was the inspiration behind the bright blooms, featuring hues of scarlet, tangerine and peach with tropical botanicals including protea, anthuriums and orchids. To find their seat at the reception, guests received an envelope with their name, seat assignment and a handwritten letter from the couple inside for a personal touch. In lieu of a traditional guest book, Kallan and Josh had loved ones sign a shot ski painted with the colors of the pair’s respective football teams—Kansas City Chiefs for the groom, Minnesota Vikings for the bride. It’s a wedding memento sure to be present at many future tailgate parties!

Ceremony ST. JUDE OF THE LAKE CATHOLIC CHURCH, MAHTOMEDI
Reception: HUNTINGTON BANK STADIUM, MINNEAPOLIS
Honeymoon: ANTIGUA
Thomas Olson had a crush on Cecilia Garcia since he first laid eyes on her in ninth grade, but it would be years before he worked up the courage to go to the school where she taught kindergarten—the same room where he attended kindergarten—to ask her on a date. In true Minnesota fashion, Ceci and Tommy celebrated their union at Huntington Bank Stadium, a special place for Tommy, a former University of Minnesota Gophers football player. The groom and groomsmen wore maroon suits (U of M colors!) while the bridesmaids wore an array of complementary fall hues. Ceci held a bouquet of dried blooms to match the colors and vibe of the fall theme, while the tables were graced with autumnal arrangements. To honor Ceci’s Mexican heritage, a mariachi band played during cocktail hour while the bridal party took photos around the stadium. “Having our first dance on the 50-yard line while our song was blaring in the stadium and everyone was watching from the stands was our favorite part,” Ceci says. As a perfect ending to their day, everyone gathered at Blarney’s, a popular bar on campus, in wedding attire.

Tiffany Bergum and Levi Jensen took full advantage of Redeemed Farm’s breathtaking scenery for their summer wedding. “The venue alone was the inspiration I had been envisioning,” the bride says. It was the only space the couple toured, but they instantly knew it was the one. Tiffany and Levi opted for a timeless look, with long-stemmed white roses and greenery to complement the natural beauty of the grounds. The first look was a favorite moment, giving the pair a moment of calm before the festivities began. Bridesmaids and groomsmen wore a palette of sophisticated neutral colors, while bride and groom looked sleek in classic wedding attire. After their alfresco ceremony, the newlyweds Facetimed Levi’s grandfather, which added a special warmth to the day. The celebration continued inside, where baby’s breath and candles created a romantic, minimalist mood, while the décor and stationery designed by the bride added a personal touch. Tiffany changed into a chic white jumpsuit with feathered bodice before she hit the dance floor with her new husband.

Willie De-Souza took his proposal to Kristin Brause to great heights. The couple, who met at Minnesota State University–Moorhead, had been dating about 10 years and were visiting their favorite city, San Diego, when Willie surprised her with a hot air balloon ride—something Kristin had long dreamed of. High above the city, with La Jolla and the Pacific Ocean in the distance, Willie proposed while a photographer (who had told Kristin she was taking photos for publicity materials!) snapped pictures. The couple’s two wedding ceremonies were a sublime combination of two cultures. A Ghanaian ceremony was held at the home of Kristin’s parents in Fergus Falls, complete with Willie’s pastor, traditional Ghanaian food made by his family members and traditional Ghanaian clothing. Flags from Norway and Ghana greeted guests at the American ceremony at Bavaria Downs, with a modern, classy vibe. The flower girl and ring bearer wore traditional Ghanaian clothing while the rest of the wedding party wore American wedding attire. The couple incorporated other special touches: minimal greenery and white flowers except for three red roses to honor Willie’s late father. And rather than a traditional wedding cake, they served Norwegian kransekake and mini desserts.

Angela Bianchi-Rossi and Alex Walz’s romance was starting just as the school year at Winona State was ending in 2018, but the couple didn’t let time or distance deter them. They had been together just over three years when Alex dropped to bended knee at the end of the dock at Angela’s family’s cabin on July Fourth weekend. Their wedding day dawned rainy and cold, but just as the ceremony was starting, the sun broke through, warming everyone’s spirits. Family helped make the memories even sweeter: Angela’s godfather was the officiant, her grandfather gave a blessing in Italian at mealtime and Alex’s mother was their wedding planner. A favorite moment for Angela was the ring warming, in which the close friends and family members passed around the couple’s rings, each taking a moment to offer a blessing for the newlyweds. Gusty winds took their toll on the arbor, but that didn’t diminish the breathtaking florals. Later, the arbor was fastened above the dance floor, adding a magical touch, along with hoops of greenery and fabulous floral centerpieces.

Ceremony & Reception: EARL & WILSON EVENT CENTER, ST. PAUL
Honeymoon: PUNTA CANA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
From the moment Jake Watzka heard Madison Schultz laugh in a statistics class at Winona State, he wanted to know more about her. He didn’t get the chance for two years, when she boldly approached him while he was on duty as a bouncer; though he turned down her request to join her later, she persisted via Instagram. “One thing turned into another,” Madison recalls, “and he asked ‘What's your major? ... and your number?’ ” Their wedding day fell three days short of the four-year anniversary of their first date, and despite the weather, “our pictures taken in the rain ended up being some of the most breathtaking,” Madison says. Seeking a warm, cozy atmosphere, the couple found Earl & Wilson Event Center, with its chandeliers and exposed brick, suited them perfectly. Special moments abounded throughout the day. The ceremony was officiated by a dear family friend who had seen Madison’s mom through a 10-year battle with cancer. “Sueann is the person who comes to mind when we think of love lived out loud,” Madison says. To celebrate her mom, Madison arranged a special mother-daughter dance, for all the “sleepless nights [she spent] helping to make my dream wedding become a reality.” *

IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO START PLANNING. FOLLOW THESE STEPS AND YOU’LL BE WELL ON YOUR WAY TO MATRIMONIAL BLISS.
FIRST THINGS FIRST:
Tell friends and family. Set the date.
Choose the type of wedding you want (formal, semi-formal, informal; which season). Set a wedding budget and decide who will be able to contribute and how much. Visit, choose and book your ceremony and reception sites.
Pick a photographer/videographer. Have engagement photos taken. Start shopping for your gown. Start working on your guest list. Arrange for both sets of parents to get together.
9 TO 12 MONTHS BEFORE:
Sign up for any pre-marital counseling or classes.
Announce your engagement in local newspapers, if desired.
Choose your wedding party members. Arrange the first meeting with your minister, priest, rabbi or officiant and wedding planner (if using one).
Throw an engagement party.
Gather wedding inspiration. Start a Pinterest board. Search magazines and websites for ideas. Begin adding the names of vendors and their contact information into a master contact list.
6 TO 9 MONTHS BEFORE: Select a caterer. Choose a baker, schedule cake tastings. Order your gown and schedule fittings (remember to bring your shoes). Shop for bridesmaid dresses. Hire a florist. Book a band/DJ. Start researching honeymoon spots. Finalize the guest list. Book a stationer (and calligrapher, if using one).
Mail save-the-date cards. Purchase your shoes, headpiece, jewelry and lingerie for the big day.
Book hair and makeup artists for the big day. Reserve event necessities. Book portable toilets for outdoor events, extra chairs, linens, lighting and so on.
Start making a day-of timeline, determining what should happen when (speeches, first dance, etc).
Book a block of hotel rooms near the reception site for out-of-town guests. Register for gifts at two to three places. Start to keep track of favorite songs.
4 TO 6 MONTHS BEFORE: Order all wedding stationery (invitations,
envelopes, thank-you notes) and work out pricing for programs, menus and place cards, which will be printed closer to the date.
Hire wedding-day transportation. Book flights and hotel reservations for your honeymoon.
Arrange the rehearsal dinner.
Schedule any beauty treatments (brow-waxing, facials, teeth-whitening) that you’d like to have done before the wedding.
Send a guest list to the host of your bridal shower. Order passport, if necessary.
Purchase wedding rings; order engraving. Remind mother and mother-in-law to start shopping for their dresses.
2 TO 4 MONTHS BEFORE:
Order the suits for the groom and groomsmen. Meet with the caterer or facility manager to discuss menus, wine selections, serving style, etc. Choose and order wedding favors and welcome baskets, if desired.
Order the wedding cake.
Meet with your officiant to discuss your ceremony; invite loved ones to perform readings, if appropriate. Choose songs for the ceremony and reception. Buy thank-you gifts for your attendants.
Confirm group hotel rates for out-of-town guests. Book your pre-wedding and wedding-night hotel. Finalize your honeymoon plans.
Send invitations to the calligrapher if you’re using one. Plan your bachelorette party with your attendants. Send a day-of timeline to your vendors so they’ll have ample time for tweaks and feedback. Sign up for dance lessons, if desired.
1 TO 2 MONTHS BEFORE: Mail invitations. Do a hair and makeup run-through (with headpiece).
Meet with the caterer to finalize a menu. Send programs, menus and escort cards to the stationer to be printed (if not using a calligrapher).
Send your wedding announcement to local newspapers, if desired.
Write thank-you notes as you receive gifts. Maintain a list of all presents received and thank-yous written.
2 TO 4 WEEKS BEFORE:
Plot the seating for the reception. Confirm times with all vendors. Have your final dress fitting.
Write your rehearsal dinner toast.
Compose your vows, if desired. Visit the salon for one last cut and color. Send escort cards and the seating chart to your calligrapher to fill in guests’ names and table numbers.
Enter RSVPs into a guest-list database, and call invitees who haven’t yet responded. Get your marriage license. If you’re changing your name, order several extra copies.
If changing your name, make arrangements with Social Security, Department of Motor Vehicles, credit card companies and your bank. Mail the rehearsal dinner invitations, if applicable. Stock the bar using your final head count as a guide. Send out as many final vendor payments as you can. Provide addresses for drivers of transport vehicles. Create a must-take “shot list” and discuss it with your photographer.
Compile the fees that will be due on the wedding day.
Give the caterer a final head count.
Appoint a reliable pal to transport the cake knife, toasting glasses, etc. to and from the reception site. Get final beauty treatments (facial, waxing, browshaping, etc.).
Pack for the honeymoon. Ask someone to bring your luggage to the reception if you’re leaving from there. Give your honeymoon itinerary to a friend or family member in case of emergency. Pick up your dress or make arrangements for it to be fetched or delivered.
Arrange for the cake to be delivered to the reception venue.
Buy a guest book, if you choose to use one. Delegate small wedding-day tasks: someone to carry your things; someone to bustle your dress; someone to manage the gifts; someone to hand out tips; and so on.
Send a timeline to the bridal party, including every member’s contact information. Break in your shoes.
Assemble and distribute welcome baskets to out-of-town guests, if desired.
Pick up wedding rings, check engravings and sizes. Remind men to pick up formalwear and shoes, and check them for fit.
If you don’t have a personal attendant, ask a friend to help you get dressed on the big day. Talk to head usher about any special seating arrangements.
Arrange for a light snack for the wedding party to eat while getting ready for the ceremony.
Help decorate the venue, if necessary. Have a manicure, pedicure and any other last-minute pampering treatments.
Distribute thank-you gifts to the wedding party, special attendants and parents.
Organize for a note or gift to be delivered to your fiancé on the wedding day.
Take a relaxing bath, go to bed early and start getting excited. You’re about to get married! *
