HERE COMES THE SUN
When dreaming up this boldly beautiful shoot, Rebecca Foster of Indigo Event Design leaned into the couple’s rich Indian and Guamanian cultures for design inspiration. Villa Catalana Cellars—with its lush foliage and rustic architecture—created a striking backdrop for a cream-draped tablescape, textured florals and other intricate touches to come to life. Continued on next page.
Photography: Kallie Dawn
Foster chose a sunny color palette of citrus yellow, marigold orange and indigo blue to weave through the décor. With that in mind, Jodi Iverson of Jodi Iverson Florals shaped her free-form arrangements around marigolds, which represent the sun, brightness and positive energy in Indian culture. To further the element of cultural fusion, tiles were used to play a prominent role in the design scheme, from the ceramic tile escort cards and menus to the tile shapes adorning the invitation suite and cake. Incorporating arabesque tiles and shapes gave a nod to India, where they symbolize unity; the chosen ceramics, specifically Chamorro pottery, date back 3,000 years in Guam. Pao Coronel, who identifies as transgender female, donned a chic buttery yellow pantsuit that is feminine in color with a fit that’s masculine enough to make it gender nonconforming. She finished the look with a pair of classic pumps hand-painted by Letters and Dust. While Indian custom usually sees couples in bright colors, Harika Sabbineni wore a modern white dress with a traditional dupatta scarf, gold jewelry and embellishments. —Chelsea Gibson

BRIDE IDEAS
5 TIPS FOR AN IDEAL OUTDOOR WEDDING
Hosting weddings alfresco has become far more common, with pandemic safety concerns taking celebrations outside. While nothing is more romantic than a barefoot beach wedding or a woodland nuptial, the uncontrollable and often unpredictable forces of nature can quickly turn the perfect day to ruin. We’ve compiled the best advice from wedding pros to keep everything under control. — Sara
Hubbard1. NO HAIR OUT OF PLACE The fiercest enemy of perfect hair and makeup is drizzling rain or high humidity. Try getting an updo for the ceremony and then letting your hair fall loose at the reception. After all, the last thing you want to worry about while saying your vows is your carefully coiffed hair blowing wild in the wind. In the same vein, stick to a matte lipstick to avoid the stickiness of gloss. Ask your makeup artist to use a liquid highlighter to best catch the light reflecting off your cheeks.
2. CHECK THE FORECAST. THEN CHECK IT AGAIN Rain may be the first fear that comes to mind when considering how Mother Nature may misbehave, but there are many other ways she can wreak havoc as well. “Creating shade, and having available water or other beverages, ample seating and even a cute token such as paper fans that double as a ceremony program can assist guests struggling in temps above 75 degrees,” says Ashley Lachney of Alston Mayger Events (@alstonmaygerevents). “A luxe touch would be to have catering come around with a chilled towel before dinner service.”
3. HAVE A BACKUP PLAN Connect with the venue coordinator and your wedding planner on alternate ideas in case of unexpected rain, wind, hail, sleet or snow becomes an issue on the big day. “This would be a worst-case scenario,” says Alisha Reicks-Sturgill of The Indigo Bride (@theindigobride). “You need to ensure there is an indoor option or the ability to set up an outdoor tent should mother nature have other ideas.” It is also important to consider a location’s weather patterns while choosing décor for ceremonies and receptions. “For example, the wind tends to pick up on summer afternoons in Central Oregon,” notes Reicks-Sturgill. “So, we do not recommend using top-heavy or tall florals
at an all-outdoor affair.” Reicks-Sturgill also recommends keeping breezy weather in mind when selecting place cards, napkin folds and signage.
4. LET NATURE BE YOUR DECORATOR An outdoor wedding provides the perfect opportunity to save time and energy on décor. As Karalyn Demarest of Oregon Garden Resort (@oregongardenresort) knows, there’s no need to splurge on elaborate floral arrangements when they are already growing out of the ground. “Outdoor weddings can be great! Stress less about the decorations because you can use the natural surroundings of an outdoor venue to set the vibes,” Demarest says.
5. WIDE-OPEN SPACES Keeping your celebration safe means keeping everyone at a distance from one another. Find a location with lots of open space that makes it easy to have your guests maintain socially safe distances. Also, figure out a seating chart ahead of time. Knowing which of your guests live in the same household means you can cluster them together, thereby letting everyone be separate yet together. Communication and organization are key here. Have your calligrapher put together a seating chart and name cards to provide a gentle yet clear reminder that caution is of the utmost importance.

The Perfect Trousseau
Chelsea Janzen has always found high-end luxurious intimates difficult to find outside of Portland. With the goal to bring that kind of luxury to the Willamette Valley, Janzen opened the boutique Trousseau, named after a native grape she discovered on a trip to the Jura region in France. The name is also an homage to the women who traveled the Oregon Trail while carting along their hope chests, or trousseaus.
The historic downtown Dayton boutique is stocked with high-quality lingerie and intimate apparel from independent, female-owned brands. Its offerings run the gamut from everyday basics (such as Tencel fabric panties and bralettes) to specialoccasion sets, as well as nonbinary underwear that suits all bodies. Janzen prides herself on hosting a body-positive space that offers bra fittings and bridal lingerie consultations for individuals and couples. For those searching for something special for their wedding night and honeymoon, Janzen advises a chat with your partner to find out what they prefer: daring and edgy or soft and romantic? “Also consider the times you’ll celebrate during the first few years of marriage,” says Janzen. “You may not be able to wear your wedding dress out on the town, but slipping into your honeymoon lingerie will bring back special memories.” Her vision continues to expand for Trousseau, growing it into a “boutique for the senses,” with an array of robes, loungewear and proprietary all-natural massage oils and soaking salts. Janzen donates a portion of Trousseau’s monthly proceeds to local nonprofits that support women and survivors of domestic violence. ADVENTURES IN WEDDINGS
Sometimes you should go chasing waterfalls. While most brides step into their highest heels to see their soon-to-be husband for the first time on their wedding day, Carina Hahn chose something a bit more comfortable. Carina and her groom, Trey Gunnell, got ready in different rooms of the Columbia River Gorge Airbnb they were staying in. Then, with her faithful Teva sandals secured on her feet, Carina trekked separately from her groom to Latourell Falls for the couple’s first look. Amid the mist, the two enjoyed an intimate moment with the roar of the waterfall as their musical accompaniment while their photographer, Ellie Parker of E. Ann Photography (@eannphotography), captured the memorable moment. Avid hikers and lovers of the outdoors, Carina and Trey spent an hour exploring before heading off to tie the knot at Portland’s Blockhouse, in a celebration inspired by the beauty of Oregon and perfectly planned by Alston Mayger Events (@alstonmaygerevents). — Sara Hubbard

THE GREAT OUTDOORS
THESE 11 STUNNING VENUES SHOWCASE OREGON’S NATURAL BEAUTY
EVEN PRIOR TO LAST YEAR, WE ALL RELISHED THE OUTDOOR TREASURES OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST, particularly those of Oregon. But the pandemic forced us to think further outside the box and to get creative about how and where we enjoy our time—enter patio dining, rain or shine; park meetups with friends; walks with loved ones; and moments of stillness in the backyard. As couples get their wedding plans back on track, they’re looking to the outdoors now more than ever for their celebrations. Luckily for Oregon couples, there are outdoor venues that come in all shapes and sizes—from family farms and expansive decks to whimsical forests and scenic wineries.
North of Portland on Sauvie Island is flower farm turned event space Sweet Delilah Farm (@sweetdelilahfarm). An entirely outdoor venue suited for intimate events, the farm features a covered pergola with rustic tables, an arbor with farm views and a giant firepit for afterparty fun. In true farm-to-table fashion, owner Chelsea Willis offers
full floral design packages for couples, who get to select their blooms in the fields prior to cut and design. Additionally, you can loop the bridal party in with DIY design classes to create their own bouquets using the farm-grown blooms. Owned and operated by all-queer staff, Sweet Delilah Farm is focused on inclusivity for the BIPOC and LGBTQ communities.
Located south of Portland, new venue Ironlight (@ironlightlo) towers above the hustle of downtown Lake Oswego. With an urbanmeets-nature ambiance, Ironlight treats guests to an elevated event experience, allowing for seamless transitions between its indoor and outdoor areas (including two showstopping rooftop terraces with panoramic views of Mount Hood and the Cascades). Ironlight accommodates as many as 250 seated guests, but can also host smaller gatherings within the space.
Perched on Mount Scott in Happy Valley is The Aerie at Eagle Landing (@theaerieatel), a charming French-style stone chateau that’s
surrounded by Eagle Landing Golf Course. The venue features several outdoor spots for weddings, including its newest addition, The Dock, which has waterfront views of The Aerie Clubhouse. Limited to five weddings a year, The Dock delivers an exclusive experience for couples and even includes use of its very own “love boat” (swoon).
Overlooking the historic Columbia River Gorge, Bridal Veil Lakes (bridalveillakes.com) is nestled between old-growth forests and a three-acre lake. The private property is replete with lush greenery, gardens, wildflowers and dramatic views—a captivating canvas to make the day your own. And because the owners allow only one group per day, you can savor it from morning until midnight. Also overlooking the gorge is The Griffin House (@thegriffinhouse), a 120-year-old home and sprawling cliffside property, just five minutes from downtown Hood River. Lovingly renovated throughout the years, The Griffin House offers endless delights and amenities, including accommodations for ten, stone terraces, grassy lawns and an original rock wall lining the bluff’s edge, where you can take in outstanding views.
Nestled in the foothills of Mount Hood at the confluence of Bee and Canyon creeks, Camp Colton (@camp.colton) gives couples unlimited access to natural wilderness complemented by the convenience of refined structures. The property’s 85 acres of enchanting forest are suffused with waterfalls, foot bridges, ponds and meadows—the essential ingredients for making your woodsy wedding dreams come true. Perhaps the coolest part about Camp Colton is its on-site accommodations for as many as 25 people, with additional capacity for 25 people to camp, so the party can go all night long.
Out in wine country, Francis Ford Coppola’s Domaine de Broglie (@domainedebroglie) sits in the Dundee Hills, with sweeping views of the Willamette Valley. Contrasting styles of modern glam and rustic elegance come together to make this spot a memorable backdrop. After the ceremony among vines and oak trees, guests can meander throughout the vineyard sipping estate-grown Pinot Noir before heading to the rustic outdoor fireplace. Also located in the Dundee Hills is Domaine Roy & Fils (@domaineroy), an intimate luxury wine country venue. The estate accommodates as many as 75 guests on its sprawling outdoor patio, which faces breathtaking views of the Willamette Valley and a grove of olive trees transplanted from California. Bring the wine theme full circle and pair your event with limited-production Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs.
On the beloved Oregon Coast in Pacific City, award-winning craft brewery Pelican Brewing Company (@pelicanbrewing) offers a private beachfront
ceremony setting with impressive views of Haystack Rock and Cape Kiwanda. After the ceremony, guests can mingle at cocktail tables on the outdoor patio before moving on to the reception in the oceanfront banquet room. For those coming from out of town, there are several unique lodging options within walking distance.
Head to Central Oregon just outside of Bend to Brasada Ranch (@brasadaranch), where year-round sunshine, Cascade Mountain views and destination “I dos” await. Brasada Ranch offers a diverse assortment of indoor/outdoor venues with a mix of modern, rustic, high-desert flair. For those looking to make a weekend of it, guests can stay at the resort and enjoy activities such as biking, swimming, fishing and horseback riding. Rest assured you’ll be taken care of, as Brasada prides itself on booking one wedding per weekend to give couples the utmost attention and service. Also located in
Central Oregon is House on Metolius (@houseonmetolius), a 200-acre property on the banks of the sparkling Metolius River that’s surrounded by national forest and with views of Mount Jefferson and Three Fingered Jack. The wooded escape has served as a private estate and retreat for more than 100 years and now hosts a limited number of exclusive weddings each year. Its wedding package includes use of its facilities and accommodations, including the Main House (seven bedrooms plus a bridal suite) and six additional cabins.
With its unmatched natural beauty and a variety of spectacular landscapes, usually just steps away, Oregon offers couples endless options for outdoor wedding venues. After all, dancing the night away under the stars is as romantic as it gets.

LOOK WITHIN TO DISCOVER THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR WEDDING DÉCOR
By Lara M. BurnapAn intimate elopement to Oregon’s wilderness offers nature lovers a chance to celebrate two of their great passions: the outdoors and each other. Todd Lake in central Oregon offers a stunning backdrop of the Broken Top volcano and a forested area nestled against the Cascade lake. The Indigo Bride and Rosemary and Pine Photography embraced nature in every aspect of their design: the mountainous location, neutral-hued florals in terra-cotta pots and even the bride’s fog-colored wedding gown. “Our goal was for this morning to feel like a sweep-you-off-your-feet romantic and quiet love story,” says Alisha Reicks-Sturgill of The Indigo Bride. Imagine private, handwritten vows followed by a lakeside picnic and paddling around the lake in a floral-adorned canoe. To complement the beauty of the outdoors, Rosemary and Pine Photography arranged white roses with hints of peach and blush, hydrangeas, baby’s breath and eucalyptus cascading from the aft of the canoe. The bride’s bouquet included the same blossoms, with the addition of dried lunaria (money plant) and white cascading orchids. Says Reicks-Sturgill, “We wanted to inspire couples to imagine natural, cozy elopement vibes among the beauty of Oregon.”

City lovers will find their bliss in this monochromatic wedding design featuring a romantic take on the modern minimalist interior of Easton Broad in downtown Portland. The team, composed of Revel Petals, photographer Casi Yost and The Party Place, created a timeless mood laced with whimsy and European elegance. The venue’s industrial design, with its concrete walls, wood beam ceilings and large windows, provided the perfect foil for creating a dreamy atmosphere. The austere yet ethereal ceremonial scene is set in front of a subtle backdrop of voluminous white fabric; artistic florals line the aisle. Balancing simplicity and luxury, the reception tables are layered with linens, gauze and an abundance of florals in neutral shades—including cream, white and a hint of lavender. Roses, tulips and orchids were mixed with the field-flower textures of scabiosa, Queen Anne’s lace, dried allium and Joe Pye weed to create an organic-meets-classic bridal bouquet, which pairs beautifully with the clean lines of the strapless wedding gown. The sculptural cake is the pièce de résistance, perfectly capturing the team’s vision with modern textures and sophisticated styling.

Plan a fashion-forward wedding while supporting your beliefs. Style, sustainability and supporting a diverse group of women-owned businesses comprise the backbone of this particular design. Inspired by FivePine Lodge’s sprawling pine forest, a design team led by Shantel Dix of ShanTilly Gatherings, together with Novella Theory Floral Co. and Marissa Solini Photography, opted for a modern spin on a rustic wintry wedding. A black and white color palette is boldly enhanced with brilliant emerald and warm brown hues. To support its community and the environment, Novella Theory sourced locally grown blooms and hand-dyed the bouquet’s black ribbon using natural ingredients. Dream Cakes embraced the scene by creating an intricate wilderness design on the single-tiered cake. The groom’s emerald plaid tuxedo whimsically plays off the bride’s sweetheart lace gown, elegantly accented with a cozy wool sweater. “Don’t be afraid to put your love first and create a wedding that reflects your unique relationship,” advises Dix. “Find vendors you love, and we’ll fight for you to have the day of your dreams!”
Creating a design that exemplifies a couple is a sure way to make a wedding as individual as they are, and small, intimate occasions open the door to unique venues. With Judy Schmidt Memorial Skate Park in Silverton as their muse, Wildflower Portland and photographer Brady Bates illustrate how to use this concept to develop a creative celebration. Embracing their youthful spirits, these brides sport a sleek wedding dress and a chic white suit—with both wearing matching black Converse sneakers. Florals arranged in tinted contemporary vessels, together with sleek place settings, bring a polished edge to the skatepark setting, which also gets a makeover with one of its concrete wall embellished in silver orchids, toffee roses, amaranthus, lunaria and summer grasses. Burnt orange accents and muted neutrals bring a warmth and subtle bohemian flair to the minimalist décor. “Why should the fun stop with a cool engagement shoot?” asks Wildflower’s Chas Thompson Thomas. “A couple’s wedding day can be just as personalized, intimate and exciting.”

Stacey Choi of Hedonish Desserts’ geometric masterpiece maintains a touch of softness despite its sharp edges. With an off-center second tier and delicate swirls of blue gray amid the white base, it ties in seamlessly with the rest of the design.

ORANGE IS THE NEW WHITE
ABBEY ROAD FARM PROVIDES THE BACKDROP FOR TWO INTERPRETATIONS OF CITRUS-HUED DESIGN
Text by Sara HubbardA SHOWSTOPPING ORANGE-SHERBET MILLIA LONDON
DRESS served as the launching point for this out-of-the-box design by Amore Coordination. With its use of elegant swaths of gentle orange and pops of bright blues, the team proved that avant-garde and traditional sensibilities don’t have to be mutually exclusive. “How will weddings be celebrated in the years to come?” the team at Amore asked itself. The answer was with luxe florals, eye-catching cuisine and an unexpected color palette—and all on a small scale in a stunning location. Nestled in the heart of Oregon’s wine country, Abbey Road Farm’s bucolic landscape provided a peaceful backdrop to the intimate affair. To tie the design together, the team incorporated shades of orange into the food itself. With its coral watercolor finish, the cake, by Michelle of Tres Belle Desserts, lent a modern touch as well as acted as a visual complement to the rest of the menu, which included smoked salmon on rye and Italian peach cookies. Songbird Floristry created a pillar of greenery that sat behind the king’s table and subtly tied into the overall design vision with grapefruits intermingled throughout the sweet and elegant installment.

FOR A MOD TAKE ON AN ORANGE PALETTE, Cindy of Peachy Keen Coordination kept bright colors and unexpected twists at the fore. “You can skip tradition now more than ever—in fact, people celebrate that!” Cindy says. A dusty orange 1970s Volkswagen van, courtesy of The FotoBus Co., did double duty as both photo booth and ceremony arbor. As the bride and groom enjoyed a mini photoshoot, flowers by Wildflower Portland in hues of orange, rust and white traced their way up the side of the van. Bee’s Custom Cakes created a striking Tiffany blue three-tier masterpiece—which has been sliced in half vertically—with edible flowers of gold, orange and white wallpapering the exposed center. Suspended above the dining table, a colorful floral installation drew the eye upward and out to the rolling hills of Abbey Road Farm. The blush-colored tabletop featured “Saturday market” paper-wrapped bouquets that guests could take home. For a finishing touch, Cindy put together a bohemian twist on a drive-in movie with Moroccan poufs and cozy mismatched blankets scattered on the lawn among low rattan chairs.

CRISTINA & ROBERT
Married and celebrated: LODGE 902, HOOD RIVER Date: JANUARY 7, 2021
Cristina Rodriguez and Robert Shepherd’s intimate microwedding at Lodge 902 was packed full of life, from its bold floral arrangements to the upbeat festivities. With only a month to plan the nuptials, bride Cristina gave her florist and coordinator lots of latitude in working with the rustic ambiance of Lodge 902, resulting in a warm and lively neutral color palette that was accompanied by lush, blooming greenery. To pay tribute to Cristina’s Puerto Rican roots, agave amica was featured in Cristina’s bouquet together with chrysanthemums, hypericum berry, veronica and dried florals. After the ceremony, guests enjoyed a sit-down dinner that was decorated with garlands festooned with eucalyptus and Italian ruscus and adorned with bold rust, peach and cream accents. Elegant gold candlesticks and classic table settings accented the venue’s rustic atmosphere as did the gold lanterns, candles and ample greenery that bedecked Lodge 902’s fireplace mantel. As a token of the evening, guests were given personalized watercolor paintings that featured different floral elements from the wedding. Cristina also shipped Mi Plantita jam from her hometown in San Juan to the guests as an additional treat. The highlight of the memorable night was when Cristina and her bridesmaids began dancing to the Puerto Rican song “La Bomba,” and got every guest onto the dance floor, heightening an already joyful night.

GENELA & MIKE
and celebrated: LEFTBANK ANNEX, PORTLAND
Date: SEPTEMBER 12, 2020
After postponing their wedding from July to September because of the pandemic and changing venues three times in the three days before the wedding due to recent wildfires, Genela and Mike Mondini finally wed in an intimate event. Despite signing contracts with vendors less than 24 hours before the ceremony, the occasion was seamless. Reflecting their easygoing attitude, Genela and Mike’s wedding captured their love for the outdoors and a commitment to riding the wave of life—and whatever obstacles that may bring. In a color palette showcasing Oregon’s natural beauty, mauve, mint, blush and cream colors were highlighted throughout the décor. Positioned around the industrial venue, floral arrangements featured autumnal peony foliage, varieties of mauve garden roses and lush Pacific Northwest greenery. For Mike, a die-hard Chicago Bears fan, the team’s fight song was played to get the reception started. Mike’s signature raccoon hat also made an appearance, an iconic memento of the couple’s adventures. Their custom cake topper honored the third member of the family, their dog, Halas, who made an appearance for the photos and could even be found on Mike’s custom-made socks.
Celebrating into the night, Genela and Mike danced their first dance to “This Is It” by Scotty McCreery, in recognition of their passion for the outdoors and Mike’s proposal on the summit of a 9,000-foot mountain. Despite smoke from nearby wildfires and a tight timeline for planning, no obstacle was too big for Genela and Mike.

JENNIFER & DAVIS
Date: SEPTEMBER 26, 2020
Because of COVID-19 safety concerns, Jennifer Marks and Davis Head pivoted from a modern industrial wedding at Everett West in the Pearl District to a California modern celebration at The Oregon Golf Club, a venue that affords a large outdoor space for guests. Though it wasn’t what they originally envisioned, this shift was a perfect fit for Davis and Jennifer, who are both from Northern California. They combined their love of Pacific neutral shades with a touch of modern that complemented the natural grounds of The Oregon Golf Club. To achieve the modern feel that Davis and Jennifer were imagining, Luxe Productions incorporated a matte black color for the signage and menus. Since their big day was taking place during the COVID-19 pandemic, the couple’s priority was their guests’ safety. A creative way to ensure everyone felt comfortable was to use color-coded wristbands for guests, with colors indicating each guest’s comfort level for social distancing. From the couple’s first dance to “Love Is a Wild Thing” to their last twirl to “Sweet Caroline,” Jennifer and Davis danced their way into the next chapter of their lives.

MARY & TROY
Date: OCTOBER 10, 2020
Mary Hooper and Troy Nolan made their forever commitment in an intimate wedding at The Five Oaks Farm in Saint Paul. Sentiment and family have always taken center stage in the couple’s relationship, with Troy proposing to Mary on Thanksgiving at her parents’ house, and Troy’s three children joyfully welcoming Mary into their lives. Given the craziness of getting married in the midst of COVID-19, Mary and Troy looked to their talented vendors to plan, coordinate and style their modern boho-chic elopement. Pampas grass, orchids, wild grasses and other whimsical florals adorned all aspects of the affair, from Mary’s delicate bouquet to Troy’s boutonniere. Luxe local fabrics incorporated into the couple’s hanging installation added a layer of texture. Keeping with the intimacy of the day, the couple read their vows to each other privately on at the back of the Five Oaks property. In the greenhouse under strings of twinkling white lights, Mary and Troy enjoyed an intimate candlelit dinner crafted by Daniel Green of Little Olli, and featuring local ingredients and wines from Jac and James Wine Co. They finished out the magical day with an elevated glamping experience in a cozy A-frame cabin provided by Bivvi. Mary reminisces, “From the entire day of our wedding, my favorite memory was snuggling up in the A-frame cabin, popping bubbly under a sea of confetti and just hanging with my husband! Perfection.”

NANDITA & RYAN
Married: SMITH ROCK STATE PARK, BEND Celebrated: BRASADA RANCH, BEND Date: SEPTEMBER 3, 2020
With a breathtaking backdrop, Nandita Mani and Ryan Adams’ elopement-style ceremony at Smith Rock State Park paid homage to their mutual love for rock climbing. Originally intending to be married in a large Hindu wedding in May 2020, Nandita and Ryan were able to include their fondness of the outdoors in a way they wouldn’t have been able to do with more than 150 guests. The inspiration for the wedding theme expanded on the dramatic views of the state park with a fusion of high desert colors, such as rust, marigold and yellow, while still keeping the vibrancy of Indian weddings. Marigolds, orange roses and florals matching the orange and yellow palette made appearances throughout the event both in Nandita’s bouquet and in the floral arrangements on the reception table. Aspects of Nandita and Ryan’s Hindu vision also made their way into the design, with elements of a traditional Hindu wedding, such as a flower exchange symbolizing acceptance of one another as life partners, and an adaptation of the seven steps, with one step taken for each vow given. Celebration of Indian culture continued in the menu, which was carefully crafted into a blend of Pacific Northwest and Indian cuisines, such as cupcakes inspired by the classic Indian dessert gulab jamun. Nandita and Ryan’s wedding may have looked very different from what they had originally planned, but their intimate guest count of five gave them a chance to make their special day even more personal and memorable.

Set a wedding budget and decide who will be able to contribute and how much.
Visit, choose and book your ceremony and reception sites.
Pick a photographer/videographer. Have engagement photos taken. Start shopping for your gown.
Start working on your guest list. Arrange for both sets of parents to get together.
9 TO 12 MONTHS BEFORE:
Sign up for any pre-marital counseling or classes.
Announce your engagement in local newspapers, if desired.
Choose your wedding party members. Arrange the first meeting with your minister, priest or rabbi and wedding planner (if using one).
Throw an engagement party.
Gather wedding inspiration. Start a Pinterest board. Search magazines and websites for ideas. Begin adding the names of vendors and their contact information into a master contact list.
6 TO 9 MONTHS BEFORE:
Select a caterer.
Choose a baker, schedule cake tastings. Order your gown and schedule fittings (remember to bring your shoes).
Shop for bridesmaid dresses. Hire a florist.
Book a band/DJ.
Start researching honeymoon spots. Finalize the guest list.
Book a stationer (and calligrapher, if using one). Mail save-the-date cards.
Purchase your shoes, headpiece, jewelry and lingerie for the big day.
Book hair and makeup artists for the big day.
Reserve event necessities. Book portable toilets for outdoor events, extra chairs, linens, lighting and so on. Start making a day-of timeline, determining what should happen when (speeches, first dance, etc).
Book a block of hotel rooms near the reception site for out-of-town guests. Register for gifts at two to three places. Start to keep track of favorite songs.
4 TO 6 MONTHS BEFORE:
Order all wedding stationery (invitations, envelopes, thank-you notes) and work out pricing for programs, menus and place cards, which will be printed closer to the date. Hire wedding-day transportation. Book flights and hotel reservations for your honeymoon.
Arrange the rehearsal dinner. Schedule any beauty treatments (brow-waxing, facials, teeth-whitening) that you’d like to have done before the wedding. Send a guest list to the host of your bridal shower.
Order passport, if necessary. Purchase wedding rings; order engraving. Remind mother and mother-in-law to start shopping for their dresses.
2 TO 4 MONTHS BEFORE:
Order the suits for the groom and groomsmen. Meet with the caterer or facility manager to discuss menus, wine selections, serving style, etc. Choose and order wedding favors and welcome baskets, if desired.
Order the wedding cake. Meet with your officiant to discuss your ceremony; invite loved ones to perform readings, if appropriate.
Choose songs for the ceremony and reception. Buy thank-you gifts for your attendants. Confirm group hotel rates for out-of-town guests.
Book your pre-wedding and wedding-night hotel.
Finalize your honeymoon plans. Send invitations to the calligrapher if you’re using one.
Plan your bachelorette party with your attendants. Send a day-of timeline to your vendors so they’ll have ample time for tweaks and feedback.
Sign up for dance lessons, if desired.
1 TO 2 MONTHS BEFORE:
Mail invitations. Do a hair and makeup run-through (with headpiece).
Meet with the caterer to finalize a menu. Send programs, menus and escort cards to the stationer to be printed (if not using a calligrapher).
Send your wedding announcement to local newspapers, if desired.
Write thank-you notes as you receive gifts. Maintain a list of all presents received and thank-yous written.
2 TO 4 WEEKS BEFORE:
Plot the seating for the reception. Confirm times with all vendors. Have your final dress fitting. Write your rehearsal dinner toast. Compose your vows, if desired. Visit the salon for one last cut and color. Send escort cards and the seating chart to your calligrapher to fill in guests’ names and table numbers.
Enter RSVPs into a guest-list database, and call invitees who haven’t yet responded. Get your marriage license. If you’re changing your name, order several extra copies. If changing your name, make arrangements with Social Security, Department of Motor Vehicles, credit card companies and your bank. Mail the rehearsal dinner invitations, if applicable.
Stock the bar using your final head count as a guide. Send out as many final vendor payments as you can.
Provide addresses for drivers of transport vehicles.
Create a must-take “shot list” and discuss it with your photographer.
1 WEEK BEFORE:
Compile the fees that will be due on the wedding day.
Give the caterer a final head count. Appoint a reliable pal to transport the cake knife, toasting glasses, etc. to and from the reception site.
Get final beauty treatments (facial, waxing, brow-shaping, etc.).
Pack for the honeymoon. Ask someone to bring your luggage to the reception if you’re leaving from there.
Give your honeymoon itinerary to a friend or family member in case of emergency. Pick up your dress or make arrangements for it to be fetched or delivered.
Arrange for the cake to be delivered to the reception venue.
Buy a guest book, if you choose to use one. Delegate small wedding-day tasks: someone to carry your things; someone to bustle your dress; someone to manage the gifts; someone to hand out tips; and so on.
Send a timeline to the bridal party, including every member’s contact information. Break in your shoes.
Assemble and distribute welcome baskets to out-of-town guests, if desired.
Pick up wedding rings, check engravings and sizes.
Remind men to pick up formalwear and shoes, and check them for fit.
If you don’t have a personal attendant, ask a friend to help you get dressed on the big day. Talk to head usher about any special seating arrangements.
Arrange for a light snack for the wedding party to eat while getting ready for the ceremony.
LAST 24 HOURS:
Help decorate the venue, if necessary. Have a manicure, pedicure and any other last-minute pampering treatments.
Distribute thank-you gifts to the wedding party, special attendants and parents.
Organize for a note or gift to be delivered to your fiancé on the wedding day.
Take a relaxing bath, go to bed early and start getting excited. You’re about to get married!
