NEW BEGINNINGS

2020 HAS BEEN A TIME FOR REFLECTION AS WE HAVE FOUND OURSELVES EXPERIENCING A REALITY THAT NO ONE COULD HAVE IMAGINED . My thoughts have been with all of Oregon’s brides and grooms as they as alter wedding plans not only due to COVID-19, but also because of the devastating wildfires this fall. These times have made all of us hold our loved ones closer than ever.

For some couples, this uncertainty led them to postpone their wedding; others decided to elope, while many opted for an intimate celebration. But no matter what a couple’s decision may be, one thing remains constant and true: love. This is what we celebrate in this latest issue of Oregon Bride. A wedding is one of the few times in our lives when love becomes tangible. Every decision, from the blooms in your bouquet to the guest list, is a meaningful one. And now more than ever, we all want to share our love with family and friends.

One of the brightest spots this year has been the time I’ve spent looking over all of the real weddings, from the pre-pandemic beauties to the small, romantic ceremonies that took place in the summer (page 60). The unwavering commitment of wedding vendors—from bridal stores and wedding planners to caterers and venues—to find a way to celebrate love is a gift in these uncertain times. To aid in your planning, we have immersed ourselves in the emotional and intimate beauty of microweddings and elopements (page 44), showcased creative ideas for the big day’s décor (page 38 and 15), and found romance on a windswept beach (page 32). Most importantly, we’ve listened to the voices within our wedding community to learn and understand how we can be part of supporting the Black Lives Matter movement (page 28).

I hope that all of you continue to dream, find inspiration, support each other and embrace hope. And know that we at Oregon Bride are with you every step of the way. I hope this issue brings you the love you seek.

LEAVING LAS VEGAS

The 1960s architecture of Palm Springs and the high-wattage signage of Las Vegas served as inspiration for this whimsical design by Alston Mayger Events. With its black-and-white-tiled floor and streaming natural light, Tendue, located in the Ford Building in downtown Portland, presents the perfect setting for a décor filled with yellow, rust orange, blush and classic blue, punctuated with bold geometric details and an abundance of gold. The ’60s aesthetic shines through in a three-paneled metal cathedral screen bedecked in a diagonal sweep of color-blocked florals, as well as in the vibrant vintage-style invitations, which feature four-pointed stars and mod palm trees. To bring some true romance into the picture, real-life couple Phuong and Brian Stanyer, who eloped nine years ago, stepped in as models. “Easily my favorite moment of this shoot was when Brian first saw Phuong in her dress,” says Ashley Lachney, owner of Alston Mayger Events. “It was a big reveal and so special, because they’d never had that moment before.” –

INVITATIONS Art that Invites

Finding creative ways to make the big day feel unique has never been a bigger priority for engaged couples. With this in mind, artist Elizabeth Bonne founded Ruby Charles Designs (rubycharles.com) to create made-to-order invitation suites, each one a unique work of art. Focusing on custom designs allows Ruby Charles to capture each couple’s personality and provide guests with a tangible keepsake when they receive their invitations in the mail. Bonne offers a wide range of options to ensure that every suite feels tailor-made, such as one-of-akind maps and custom wax seals. Watercolor designs are her specialty, and maps filled with details of the big day and landmarks that are close to the couple’s hearts are fan favorites. Couples who opt for either of these elements receive a special surprise on their wedding day: the original, full-size version of their work of art, which Bonne presents to the new bride and groom as a frame-worthy keepsake.

FLORAL DESIGN LOVE LANGUAGE

Blomstra Floral Co. (@blomstrafloriography) owner and designer Morgan Jackson is no stranger to storytelling. As an avid reader, Jackson has always been drawn to literary symbolism, so when she learned about floriography—the language of flowers—after graduating from Portland’s Floral Design Institute, she dove in headfirst. Jackson now applies her in-depth knowledge to offer couples an approach that she calls “floral storytelling” to create designs that are deeply imbued with personal meaning.

Floriography has been practiced across cultures for centuries, and in the Victorian era, lovers often relied on the language of flowers to communicate the sentiments they couldn’t express with words. Some elements of this tradition remain popular in modern culture, such as red roses, which represent true love. However, like any language, floriography is nuanced, and when florals are combined, meanings shift and change, which is where Jackson’s expertise comes in. To become fluent in floriography, Jackson studied global mythology and Victorian literature, and still scours the internet for ancient or obscure tomes of folklore.

This wealth of research, combined with interviews with couples, inform which blooms tell each bride and groom’s particular love story. To commemorate the big day, couples receive a “translation” document detailing their flowers’ meanings. Says Jackson, “The most important thing about floriography is that it’s flexible. Very few flowers have one single meaning, which allows us to incorporate couples’ tastes and tell a unique story when we create their designs.” Jackson chooses every flower with intention to satisfy her customers, who range from literary brides and grooms, nature lovers and die-hard romantics to couples who simply want something truly unique on their wedding day.

WEDDING PLANNING with Intention

THE WAY YOU PLAN YOUR WEDDING CAN HELP CHANGE THE WORLD FOR THE BETTER.

AS CIVIL RIGHTS PROTESTS SWEPT ACROSS THE GLOBE LAST SUMMER, CHANGES WERE HAPPENING WITHIN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY. Locally and nationally, wedding vendors and publications came together to uplift and empower fellow business owners who are Black, Indigenous or people of color (BIPOC).

How does that relate to your wedding? Planning your big day, in itself, will create memories for a lifetime, and while it might not be obvious, that planning can have a lasting impact on the people who help make your wedding vision a reality. Here are seven simple steps you can take during your wedding planning process that can make a significant difference in furthering economic equity for BIPOC vendors.

1. CHOOSE YOUR VENDORS WITH INTENTION. You’re already researching businesses, styles and prices, so take a few minutes to research the owners, too. Hire BIPOC-owned businesses when possible, but don’t forget that these businesses should align with your style and not just your ideals. As Chris Mai of Goodco Studios points out, “We want engaged couples to hire vendors because they’ve connected with their work—not [simply] hiring BIPOC because of a moral obligation. This is why equal representation throughout the industry is so important from the top. Showcasing how beautifully diverse our community is will empower couples and vendors everywhere. “

Christina Wachspress of Novella Theory Floral Co. says that she and her husband, Akili, entered

the wedding industry because of their experience in planning their own wedding six years ago. She explains, “We wanted to change that process for other couples who felt they didn’t fit into the typical engaged-couple box. We didn’t see our style or personality and certainly not our appearance as a couple represented in the wedding blogs, publications or portfolios of vendors we interacted with.”

Nowadays, a quick Google search can provide a few lists and directories of BIPOC-owned wedding vendors and restaurants. One such list, Vendors of Color, created by Jaime Ta of Jaime Ta Creative and Marcela Pulido of Marcela Pulido Photography, highlights BIPOC vendors in the Pacific Northwest region. Backed by experience and a wealth of knowledge, this duo is eager to

further the diversification of the wedding industry. As Ta states, “Wherever you are at, it is always a good time to continue or start doing the work of being inclusive.” She adds, “Supporting vendors by hiring us for their wedding or event speaks volumes, because money helps pay our bills, helps level some of the economic disadvantages that BIPOC folks continue and will continue to face.”

2. BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH YOUR VENDORS. Relationships are the foundation of every community; they uplift and open doors. You’re going to send your planner countless emails during the planning process, so while it may feel like a business relationship at fi rst, thinking of that vendor as a friend could turn that correspondence into a lasting camaraderie. Rachel Larsen of Everglow Handmade says that she has received inquiries from brides looking to build relationships that last beyond the wedding date. “It is refreshing, and I am so encouraged by these brides!” says Larsen.

3. THANK YOUR VENDORS BOTH DURING AND AFTER THE PROCESS. A little bit of kindness can go a long way in supporting the hard workers who bring your visions to life. Chas Thompson Thomas of Wildflower Portland recalls a couple who off ered to donate to an organization in her name or to give her a gift card to a local business to show how much they appreciated her, which, as Thomas says, “was incredibly thoughtful and just rad!”

4. CONTINUE TO SHARE THAT APPRECIATION FOR YOUR WEDDING VENDORS AFTER THE BIG DAY. Write reviews and testimonials about your vendors’ services and products. In a world of smartphones, we often judge by the reviews that are right at our fi ngertips. Taking a few minutes to write about how well your vendors treated you or how beautiful their creations are can help them immensely. And good old-fashioned word-of-mouth referrals help both the vendors and your engaged friends seeking advice. It’s little things like this that can help BIPOC-owned businesses bloom.

5. PROMOTE YOUR VENDORS ON SOCIAL MEDIA. “Like,” comment and share the work that your vendors post on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest. A simple click is a great way to help them receive more views, although Ta reminds us to ask ourselves if we’re also doing this work outside of social media.

6. HAVE ENGAGING CONVERSATIONS ABOUT DIVERSITY. Ta suggests that progress also can be made by having discussions about racial justice, diversity and inclusion with wedding vendors. Express yourself and share your diverse heritage with your vendors. They can use it as inspiration in planning for your wedding.

Embracing your own unique marriage traditions and cultural beliefs can be a powerful starting point for planning your wedding, and showing off your background can empower others to feel confident about their own.

Planning also presents an opportunity for these discussions with your friends and family. Officiant Jimmie, a Black officiant based in Portland, says that some people have chosen not to hire him out

7. PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS AND INCORPORATE CHARITABLE GIVING INTO YOUR CELEBRATION. Consider forgoing the traditional wedding registry and instead donate to organizations that are working toward a more inclusive community or helping lift up marginalized communities. In lieu of registry gifts, request that your guests donate to an organization in your honor. Or, instead of giving favors to your guests, leave a little note card at their place setting informing them that you have donated in their honor to your organization of choice. As always when making donations, be sure to vet the organizations beforehand to verify that they are legit. Don’t have time to research them? Here are a few local organizations that were suggested by Ta and are run by BIPOC leaders:

Equitable Giving Circle aims to empower the BIPOC communities of Portland through small donations, event fundraising, volunteering and community building in an effort to advance economic equity. Its community involvement ranges from supplying those in need with community supported agriculture boxes to offering training and education in diversity, equity and inclusion.

Feed the Mass is a nonprofit cooking education organization that offers affordable cooking classes to the community. Its goal is to empower community members by giving them access to knowledge about healthy eating and cooking, as well as providing meals to those in need during difficult times.

Vendors of Color was started by Ta and Pulido to help promote diversity in the wedding planning industry. This free directory listing of Pacific Northwest BIPOC vendors helps couples find vendors of color and hire them for their weddings.

THE ART ROMANCE

The rich history of art sets the tone for a modern design at Kimpton RiverPlace Hotel in Portland.

The invitation suite includes envelopes hand-addressed in gold calligraphy, detail cards printed with white ink and a custom watercolor design on the invitations. Cups of hot cider are adorned with cinnamon sticks and star anise flowers.

“Dutch paintings, nautical elements and exotic spices, our love story is one that is both of a bygone era, yet perfect for a modern bride,” says Marisa Kozak Ringe of Revel Petals. The delicate design is a subtle ode to the Dutch masters with a color scheme based on Johannes Vermeer’s iconic painting “Girl with a Pearl Earring.” Textures such as those of the rabbitbrush among the florals, the rippled three-tiered cake and stylish leather chairs, add extravagance to classic details.

The bouquet features a mix of roses, clematis, acacia, rattlesnake ginger and rabbitbrush.

Opposite Page: Amber and slate hues take center stage in the ceremony design, which is fashioned from a foam-free mix of dried and fresh flowers.

Nautical touches and spices have been woven into the décor, among them glass fishing floats and flower arrangements accented with arching sprays of ginger.

The hanging installation above the tabletop incorporates dried golden ferns, sage and rattlesnake ginger, creating a fusion of alpine, desert and tropical origins that harks back to 17th-century Dutch maritime trade.

A pearl engagement ring is the perfect homage to Vermeer’s painting. Vows are artfully displayed as messages in a bottle; An homage to the sea, Dream Cakes added a subtle wave to the sophisticated three-tiered white cake adorned with flowers.

At a microwedding, every detail is unique, everyone is a guest of honor, and the focus of the main event is on each other.

Sara Pardave and Daniel Singleton, who live in Greensboro, NC, were seeking a wedding day that felt like their own private adventure. The couple found all of their vendors on Instagram and then took a flight to Portland, sight unseen, to tie the knot in the mist below Latourell Falls. The result? An intimate day of celebration and wonder that felt like it was taken from the page of a fairy tale.

SMALL WEDDINGS ARE HAVING A BIG MOMENT. When the pandemic hit, couples were forced to change their wedding plans. Yet many saw it as an opportunity to simplify, realizing that what they really wanted was an intimate gathering that didn’t skimp on style and was steeped in meaning. Couples who opt for a mini-wedding, a microwedding or an elopement often find that what they sacrifice in party size, they gain in freedom. Scaling down the guest list allows more time to perfect every detail, maximize the budget and add more elements of luxury. Venue options are nearly unlimited when the guest list is small, enabling the bride and groom to bond with every guest. Of course, a certain amount of organizing will be required, so hiring a professional is a good idea. And no matter how small the wedding—even if you decide to elope—have a photographer on hand to capture the moment. This is part of your story as a couple, and you’ll want it documented for the generations to come.

KRISTEN SWAN AND CHARLES OLSON HELD OUT AS LONG AS POSSIBLE IN STICKING WITH THEIR PLANNED 180-PERSON BLOWOUT BASH. When they chose to switch to a small wedding in order to maintain their original date, Swan found that she was able to let go and enjoy the process, with the pressure of hosting a large affair eased. The couple said “I do” among a small party of close family members. Guests ate Italian charcuterie and sipped specialty cocktails on a family friend’s Lake Oswego easement. Scaling down did bring a bonus: The floral design budget went much further, enveloping the entire party in elegant white florals and lush greenery as they wined and dined late into the night.

PORTLANDERS ANNIE KILBURG AND TED SMITH ALWAYS DREAMED OF TYING THE KNOT IN EASTERN OREGON, where they were both raised, to honor their family heritage. When their venue closed its doors to parties of more than 25 people just three weeks before the big day, the couple had to think fast. They chose to hold a small ceremony with a trimmed-down guest list at their original venue— Cottonwood Canyon State Park—and moved their reception to the Smith family’s working ranch and farm in Condon. Those three weeks of preparation were truly a community effort. The family banded together to paint, clean, mow and tidy until the area was reception-ready. The newlyweds celebrated on a quirky dance floor loaned to them by the local square dance group in the bride’s hometown, surrounded by locally inspired wildflowers. The party, which was inspired by a “hoolie” the couple once attended at Lake Chelan, was an unforgettable homage to both families and the places they call home.

ORIGINALLY PLANNED TO ELOPE TO ICELAND, but when stay-at-home orders thwarted their plans, creating an intimate celebration with their closest friends became a meaningful process. Mia wore her grandmother’s wedding ring and got on FaceTime with her best friend, who lives in Hawaii, while getting ready. Each of the couple’s four carefully chosen guests were given a picnic basket, which included a disposable camera, that the guests used to capture the picnic reception. Surrounded by a visual feast of blooming roses in North Portland’s Peninsula Park Rose Garden, the couple was captured by every guest’s unique perspective.

Not even a pandemic could stop Anupriya Singh and Sachin Dhar from tying the knot. After a two-year engagement, the couple wasn’t interested in waiting any longer to make their love official, and so they became husband and wife in a cozy backyard wedding. The couple pared down their original plan for a 225-person wedding to create a safe environment for their celebration during the time of COVID-19. The bride and groom glowed in matching gold embroidery, custom-made for them in India. A tent of sheer pink fabric bordered by garlands of blue hydrangea, peach-colored roses and greenery served as the setting for the Hindu ceremony and seamlessly tied the space into the intimate backyard setting. The smaller scale allowed for the couple to hone in on the details of their day. Hand-calligraphed coasters with guests’ names acted as place cards, and the couple took the time to make silverware holders in the weeks leading up to the celebration. Anupriya’s father even surprised the guests and the couple with homemade chocolate-covered strawberries. Once seated at the flower-and-candle-strewn table, guests dined on samosas, curries and more from Swagat Indian Cuisine. During the reception meal, Sachin kept his hand on Anupriya’s arm as they both smiled, listening to family and friends give speeches of hope and love. Though COVID-19 has caused so many people to feel isolated, Anupriya and Sachin took the opportunity to foster togetherness.

Margot Feves and Adrian Pearmine imagined their wedding as a moment to bring their families together with a big, fun party filled with personal details. At the Redd in Portland, the couple incorporated the venue’s green stamping machine and industrial aesthetic into their décor, which had a color scheme of deep greens, burgundy and blush. Fittingly, the green machine, swooping vines and emerald linens tied into Margot’s love of houseplants. The chuppah, the traditional Jewish wedding canopy, was reimagined as a gold box adorned with amaranthus, leafy green vines, berries and fresh blooms. Amaranthus also appeared in Margot’s bold bouquet and the centerpieces that decorated the reception tables, all created by Blum Design in Flowers. The Portland food scene found its way into each phase of the evening, starting with a large charcuterie board that was offered after the couple exchanged rings and broke the glass. At the dinner reception, delicious bites were everywhere: Antipasto skewers were offered at the photo booth; a chef demonstrated cooking skills in the Redd’s open kitchen; and guests enjoyed three different food stations, which offered wings, sliders from Lardo, and Portland restaurant Grassa’s Caesar salad and meatballs. Adults could partake in a whiskey collection curated by the groom, with the liquor poured over “M&A” ice cubes, while the kids were entertained by Pop-A-Shot and Skee-Ball. Margot and Adrian kicked off the dance party with the traditional hora dance and lifting of chairs, followed by live music by The Rowe Brothers, with tunes ranging from bands such as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to Temple of the Dog. After dancing the night away, guests raised sparklers as the couple exited the reception and entered the next chapter of their life together.

Kelley McGill and David Martinez’s wedding at Coopers Hall was one for the books. The couple sang their way into each other’s hearts when they first met at a karaoke bar and they have been in harmony ever since. Their stunning Portland wedding began with a traditional ceremony at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, after which the festivities migrated to Coopers Hall, a taproom turned event space. The venue resembled an urban garden, with the flora aglow from a smattering of twinkling lights. Kelley began the night wearing a simple A-line gown with a plunging neckline. Later in the evening, she switched things up and shimmied on the dance floor in an intricately beaded silver column gown. Song and dance dominated the celebration. The couple’s solo stint out on the floor recalled their first meeting as they danced to Akon and Eminem’s “Smack That.” Kelley had been singing the song the night they first saw each other. Family and friends illuminated the scene with their phone lights as they laughed at the couple’s choreography, which took cues from the song’s lyrics. Guests dined on quail, s’mores and more to refuel in between their time on the dance floor. At the end of the night, Kelley tossed a short white cape over her shoulders as the couple bid farewell and guests ushered them out under a shower of sparklers.

With clear skies and Mount Hood in the background, Haley Graham and Sam Karpeles succeeded in making their wedding feel like a classic summer picnic, just as they had planned. A rustic wooden arch adorned with red, yellow and white blooms brought simple yet stylish embellishments to the ceremony space at The Inn at Avonlea. Haley walked down an aisle strewn with red and white flower petals, and the property’s lush tree line served as a subtly stunning backdrop for their vows. Haley’s lace dress perfectly matched the venue’s rustic charm. As guests moved to the barn for the reception, long tables with greenery and candlelight greeted them, creating an ideal setting for good conversation to accompany a family-style meal. A photo booth featuring masks and a geometric background invited guests to step away from the lively dance party momentarily for some posed antics. With family, friends and string lights forming a line on each side of them, Haley and Sam departed the celebration, ending the night at the height of newlywed happiness.

Twelve years after meeting at a football game as teenagers, Maddie Boyce and Austin Steffen celebrated that anniversary by exchanging vows at The Barn PNW. The high school sweethearts grew up transitioning from MySpace to text messages, growing as friends and partners throughout their education. Surrounded by family and friends, the couple tied the knot in a moving ceremony. Maddie walked down a petal-strewn aisle wearing an embellished gown from Anna’s Bridal. For the big day, Austin donned a deep green suit accented with gold necklaces. A rectangular trellis enhanced with a leafy garland bearing red and yellow blooms wreathed the adoring couple as they exchanged their vows. Following a ride on a classic red trolley to the reception site, guests shared their good wishes for the couple on a globe turned guest book. The night ended with a sweet treat, a black layered cake with stunning gold accents, and a s’mores bar with flavors ranging from pumpkin pie to bourbon salted caramel. Because they had first met under the bright lights of a football field, it was only fitting for Maddie and Austin to dance into the next stage of their relationship underneath strings of lights illuminating the night.

East Coast chic met a simple farm aesthetic as Mandie Fishback and Natalya Kossenko tied the knot at Langdon Farms. Mandie’s sleek white suit paired beautifully with Natalya’s lace A-line dress. As she said her vows in front of a simple sign featuring a verse from the Song of Solomon, lush greenery and orange flowers, Natalya was in her element surrounded by fall colors. Centerpieces featured white pumpkins, emerald greenery and soft candlelight, and guests could take photos against a colorful wooden backdrop reading “The Fishbacks.” The autumnal décor also held hints of Mandie’s heritage. Both the bouquets and boutonnieres featured stalks of wheat as a nod to Mandie’s father’s farming background, and those stalks could also be found in vintage glass bottles throughout the reception space. Mandie’s pocket square was made from a piece of her mother’s wedding dress, and Natalya wore her grandmother’s earrings. Natalya’s Russian heritage also featured prominently, with her godparents initiating the tradition of breaking bread with the couple, and her father giving a vodka toast—complete with chilled vodka shots for the guests. Dancing to Pink’s “Raise Your Glass,” family and friends did just that, raising their glasses to celebrate Mandie and Natalya’s new marriage.

Terry Tran and Adam Weiner created their own traditions during their classically elegant wedding at the Sentinel hotel. From their first meeting at a karaoke bar to Adam’s surprise proposal in a helicopter hovering over Santa Cruz, it was clear that the couple was never destined to follow a conventional path. Throughout their ceremony, they focused on their love for friends and family: The wedding party featured Terry’s brother as the man of honor, and Adam’s brother and sister served as best man and “groomsmaid;” plus, one of their closest friends officiated the ceremony, during which they read their personal vows. For Terry, there’s nothing quite like fall in Portland, so autumnal shades dominated the celebration. Instead of taking the expected route with golds and oranges, she opted for a romantic twist, choosing mauve, rose and navy as the anchoring hues. The women in the bridal party wore dresses of varying shades of pink and purple, which seamlessly tied into bouquets of the same palette, provided by Sea of Roses. Throughout the night, Terry and Adam also drew inspiration from their travels to Europe. The grand architecture of the Sentinel and their first dance to “La Vie en Rose” were just two sweet touches that evoked their time spent globe-trotting together. Later in the evening, the festivities were all about fun. Terry switched out of her lacy, strapless Martina Liana gown and into an above-the-knee metallic Mac Duggal number that revealed her sparkly Jimmy Choo heels, which caught the light as she danced with friends and family to the Blue Wave Band’s joyous jazz music.

Fall in Oregon typically is a harbinger of chilly weather, but Katie Schumacher and David Drochner’s celebration at Brasada Ranch was enough to warm up even the coolest of days. The day was full of all the excitement, joy and vivacity that the couple embodies. Before the ceremony, Katie slipped into her Made with Love Unique Bridal dress, a fitted nude gown with an intricate white lace overlay. The couple’s love for craft beer was on full display throughout the festivities, starting even before the ceremony when every member of the bridal party “shotgunned” a can of brew before heading down aisle. The couple exchanged vows under a modern geometric altar adorned with a cluster of flowers that matched Katie’s bouquet. Even their dog, Kevin, was featured in the ceremony, walking down the aisle in a cozy cable-knit sweater. When the two were first dating, David was in the Peace Corps in Peru and Katie had just moved to Oregon— essentially rendering each of them on their own. As they danced their first dance to Old Dominion’s “One Man Band,” the two realized they would never have to be alone again. A fire roared in the fireplace, keeping guests warm during the reception as they danced and enjoyed Brasada Ranch’s assortment of Worthy Brewing offerings. Rack of lamb and halibut were served for dinner, followed by the couple cutting their pumpkin and caramel cake.

It’s never too early to start planning. Follow these steps for matrimonial bliss.

FIRST THINGS FIRST:

Tell friends and family.

Set the date.

Choose the type of wedding you want (formal, semi-formal, informal; which season).

Set a wedding budget and decide who will be able to contribute and how much.

Visit, choose and book your ceremony and reception sites.

Pick a photographer/videographer. Have engagement photos taken. Start shopping for your gown.

Start working on your guest list. Arrange for both sets of parents to get together.

TO 12

MONTHS BEFORE:

Sign up for any pre-marital counseling or classes.

Announce your engagement in local newspapers, if desired.

Choose your wedding party members. Arrange the first meeting with your minister, priest or rabbi and wedding planner (if using one).

Throw an engagement party.

Gather wedding inspiration. Start a Pinterest board. Search magazines and websites for ideas. Begin adding the names of vendors and their contact information into a master contact list.

6 TO 9 MONTHS BEFORE:

Select a caterer.

Choose a baker, schedule cake tastings. Order your gown and schedule fittings (remember to bring your shoes).

Shop for bridesmaid dresses. Hire a florist.

Book a band/DJ.

Start researching honeymoon spots. Finalize the guest list.

Book a stationer (and calligrapher, if using one). Mail save-the-date cards.

Purchase your shoes, headpiece, jewelry and lingerie for the big day.

Book hair and makeup artists for the big day.

Reserve event necessities. Book portable toilets for outdoor events, extra chairs, linens, lighting and so on. Start making a day-of timeline, determining what should happen when (speeches, first dance, etc.).

Book a block of hotel rooms near the reception site for out-of-town guests. Register for gifts at two to three places. Start to keep track of favorite songs.

4 TO 6 MONTHS BEFORE:

Order all wedding stationery (invitations, envelopes, thank-you notes) and work out pricing for programs, menus and place cards, which will be printed closer to the date. Hire wedding-day transportation. Book flights and hotel reservations for your honeymoon.

Arrange the rehearsal dinner. Schedule any beauty treatments (brow-waxing, facials, teeth-whitening) that you’d like to have done before the wedding. Send a guest list to the host of your bridal shower.

Order passport, if necessary. Purchase wedding rings; order engraving. Remind mother and mother-in-law to start shopping for their dresses.

2 TO 4 MONTHS BEFORE:

Order the suits for the groom and groomsmen. Meet with the caterer or facility manager to discuss menus, wine selections, serving style, etc. Choose and order wedding favors and welcome baskets, if desired.

Order the wedding cake. Meet with your officiant to discuss your ceremony; invite loved ones to perform readings, if appropriate.

Choose songs for the ceremony and reception. Buy thank-you gifts for your attendants. Confirm group hotel rates for out-of-town guests.

Book your pre-wedding and wedding-night hotel.

Finalize your honeymoon plans. Send invitations to the calligrapher if you’re using one.

Plan your bachelorette party with your attendants.

Send a day-of timeline to your vendors so they’ll have ample time for tweaks and feedback.

Sign up for dance lessons, if desired.

1 TO 2 MONTHS BEFORE:

Mail invitations. Do a hair and makeup run-through (with headpiece).

Meet with the caterer to finalize a menu. Send programs, menus and escort cards to the stationer to be printed (if not using a calligrapher).

Send your wedding announcement to local newspapers, if desired.

Write thank-you notes as you receive gifts. Maintain a list of all presents received and thank-yous written.

2 TO 4 WEEKS BEFORE:

Plot the seating for the reception. Confirm times with all vendors. Have your final dress fitting. Write your rehearsal dinner toast. Compose your vows, if desired. Visit the salon for one last cut and color. Send escort cards and the seating chart to your calligrapher to fill in guests’ names and table numbers.

Enter RSVPs into a guest-list database, and call invitees who haven’t yet responded. Get your marriage license. If you’re changing your name, order several extra copies. If changing your name, make arrangements with Social Security, Department of Motor Vehicles, credit card companies and your bank. Mail the rehearsal dinner invitations, if applicable.

Stock the bar using your final head count as a guide. Send out as many final vendor payments as you can.

Provide addresses for drivers of transport vehicles.

Create a must-take “shot list” and discuss it with your photographer.

1 WEEK BEFORE:

Compile the fees that will be due on the wedding day.

Give the caterer a final head count.

Appoint a reliable pal to transport the cake knife, toasting glasses, etc. to and from the reception site.

Get final beauty treatments (facial, waxing, brow-shaping, etc.).

Pack for the honeymoon. Ask someone to bring your luggage to the reception if you’re leaving from there.

Give your honeymoon itinerary to a friend or family member in case of emergency. Pick up your dress or make arrangements for it to be fetched or delivered.

Arrange for the cake to be delivered to the reception venue.

Buy a guest book, if you choose to use one. Delegate small wedding-day tasks: someone to carry your things; someone to bustle your dress; someone to manage the gifts; someone to hand out tips; and so on.

Send a timeline to the bridal party, including every member’s contact information. Break in your shoes.

Assemble and distribute welcome baskets to out-of-town guests, if desired. Pick up wedding rings, check engravings and sizes.

Remind men to pick up formalwear and shoes, and check them for fit.

If you don’t have a personal attendant, ask a friend to help you get dressed on the big day. Talk to head usher about any special seating arrangements.

Arrange for a light snack for the wedding party to eat while getting ready for the ceremony.

LAST 24 HOURS:

Help decorate the venue, if necessary. Have a manicure, pedicure and any other last-minute pampering treatments.

Distribute thank-you gifts to the wedding party, special attendants and parents.

Organize for a note or gift to be delivered to your fiancé on the wedding day.

Take a relaxing bath, go to bed early and start getting excited. You’re about to get married!

The details of Karlie and Jonathan’s autumnal brunch wedding included homages to J.R.R. Tolkien, one of the couple’s favorite authors.
