CELESTIAL CHIC

When concepting this dreamy shoot near Mount Rainier, Cassie Hanson of DAE Planner Design Co. knew she didn’t want it to be a typical boho scene so she coined the theme “free spirit.” The result was a symphony of soft, warm tones, celestial accents and romantic florals at a cozy A-frame cabin along the Cowlitz River. When selecting the color scheme, the team wanted to steer clear of classic winter hues. Instead, the designers opted for delicate tones, “almost as an ode to spring being right around the corner,” while ensuring the palette still harmonized with the rustic Pacific Northwest venue. Starting with the free-form ceremony installation, Jordan Moll Events incorporated a mix of dried and fresh elements for a breathtaking floral design. The combination was repeated in the intimate, airy tablescape, which included abundant baby’s breath, candles, dainty paper goods and immaculately curated place settings. The real-life couple’s fashion played into the theme beautifully—the bride’s dress, “Nala” by Chosen from Idina Bride, exudes a starry sensibility. The celestial gown reminded Hanson of one of her favorite lines from Romeo and Juliet, which East Avenue Press turned into a vellum paper element in the invitation suite. — Chelsea Gibson

NAIL YOUR STYLE

When it comes to wedding-day nails, brides typically opt for French manicures or polishes in hues of soft pinks and white. That tradition took a decidedly bold turn when Amy Elizabeth Gordon of AE Events & Design was planning a mid-century modern style photo shoot, and the shoot’s model mentioned she just had her nails done. When the model sent a photo of her almond nails in varying shades of green, Gordon decided to embrace the bold design and make a statement. The flirty nails bring an element of fun to the bride’s style, embodying her personality and introducing a bold and bright edge to a classic bridal look. Gordon hopes that showcasing this departure from neutral nail color inspires brides and grooms to reflect their true personalities and bring their own unique styles to their wedding-day looks. —Chelsea Gibson

GROVE OF LOVE

Marigold Design House brought the outdoors inside to the Sanctuary at Lotte Hotel Seattle with its elegant design of dramatically decorated trees. For the wedding ceremony, the embellished trees framed the floral-swathed altar to create an ethereal atmosphere. Roses were tied to the branches of the trees using dainty ribbons, and long strands of crystal beads cast shimmering light. At the reception, smaller trees rose from the center of the tables, with roses tucked around the base and hanging from ribbons, and beautiful sprays of baby’s breath were woven among the tree’s green leaves. A VEIL FOR 15 DAYS

A new era of wedding shopping is here. While tuxedo and dress rentals have been on the scene for some time, Nova by Enaura is taking the budgetfriendly, sustainable option a step further and off ering veils for rent. Over the years, Enaura Bridal founder Sohil Mistry noticed that customers wanted accessories such as veils and belts, but they were reluctant to invest in pieces that would likely not be worn again.

From classic fi ngertip veils to elegant cathedral-length showstoppers, Nova by Enaura off ers more than 10 hand-beaded veils for rent and home trial. The retailer also launched an at-home shopping experience for wedding dresses (for purchase, not rent) that uses an intuitive body measurement technique and also provides options for brides-to-be to try on at home with their friends and families. Saying yes to the dress and renting a veil from your living room? Talk about a win-win! Chelsea Gibson

THREE REAL WEDDINGS BRING REFINEMENT TO RUSTIC SETTINGS DESIGN TRENDS

JT + CLAIRE

The Farmhouse on Green Bluff in Colbert presented a picturesque setting for this indooroutdoor autumn wedding. With its 28-foot vaulted ceilings and sleek black accents, the simple white barn was stunning. Rustic elements were woven throughout the event, and included The Brewski Wagon, a restored horse trailer turned mobile bar; live-edge ceremony benches; farmhouse tables; woodfired pizzas; and sweeping views of Mount Spokane. The couple’s guest book was truly unusual: a vintage phone on which guests could leave voice messages for the bride and groom to cherish for years to come.

PAIGE + CODY

Embodying the term “family affair,” this gorgeous country wedding took place at the bride’s family farm in Enumclaw. The ceremony layout sprawled over an expansive field that features a stunning view of Mount Rainier. Guests were greeted with miniature Moscow mules in copper mugs, and then strolled inside the hay barn for the reception. The modern-boho aesthetic came to life through a combination of round and long rectangular tables topped with natural florals, golden knotted napkins and romantic candlelight.

BRANCHING OUT

A DESIGN BASED AROUND A SINGLE FLORAL ELEMENT MAKES A STRONG STATEMENT AT THE SEATTLE ASIAN ART MUSEUM

Design and Florals: Elsa Walker of Juliet and Lou Photography: Jenn Tai & Co

Text: Lara M. Burnap

Inspired by the picturesque setting of the Seattle Asian Art Museum on Capitol Hill, Elsa Walker of Juliet and Lou created a design based solely on spirea, a flowering plant native to Japan and East Asia. The museum, a historic art deco landmark, is surrounded by nearly 50 acres of park meadows and gardens, with stunning skyline views of the city. The building’s bold sandstone entrance provides the perfect backdrop for showcasing spirea’s delicate branches, verdant with white blooms. In this design, the plant is the star of the bouquet, centerpieces and ground arrangements, and also adorns the cake. Spirea also features heavily in the stunning ceremony arch, with a subtle use of boxwood to bring depth to the greenery.

While DREAMING up our wedding DESIGN , I was immediately DRAWN to the building’s vast entry and the sandstone facade. The COLOR is incredible. I wanted to CREATE a design that both complemented this setting and color and could stand on its OWN .

Classic wedding attire with modern touches accents the décor. The bride’s silk gown features an asymmetrical bodice with one off-the-shoulder sleeve. Velvet shoes add flair to the groom’s black tux.

Using PRIMARILY one ingredient is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and have started dabbling with over the past few SEASONS . As displayed in NATURE’S garden, FLOWERS can beautifully grow alongside each other or STAND ALONE with just as strong of an IMPACT .

FILM OR DIGITAL? SEATTLE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS WEIGH IN

Mary Pastuh / Film

There are many important decisions to be made for your wedding day, but one of the most everlasting will be how your photos are taken. Film photography is making a comeback as many couples are being drawn to its grain and character. But how does it compare to now standard digital photos? And which approach would be best for your budget, style and priorities? We talked to some of Seattle’s best film and digital photographers to get the lowdown on the benefits and drawbacks of each style.

Using film requires photographers to be more intentional with their shots, says photographer Jenn Tai, because it isn’t feasible to take thousands upon thousands of shots, from which photographers then have to winnow the best. “The advantage for the client is [that] a photographer who’s trained in shooting film is going to be very thoughtful about framing and exposure, rather than ‘spraying and praying,’” she says. Sarah Anne of Sarah Anne Photography concurs, saying, “Film’s beauty is that it forces you as an artist to slow down, take your time and ensure you got the shot without actually knowing you got the shot.”

fall/winter 2022 seattlebridemag.com | 43
FILM: SLOW AND STEADY Sarah Anne Photography / Digital

DIGITAL: CAPTURING SPONTANEITY

With digital, photographers have virtually no limit to how many photos they can snap, making it possible to catch spur-of-the-moment action shots that would be more difficult to capture on film. “Weddings are highly timesensitive since there’s so much going on, so efficiency is the main priority. In this context, digital wins every time. Likewise, digital performs better in darker environments, such as receptions,” says Loren Callahan of Alante Photography. “Digital has fail-safes built in, such

as the latest technology in auto-focus, that make my work more consistent and allow me to react to sudden events as they happen (laughter, toasts, tears, hugs, etc.),” adds Sarah Anne.

FILM: NOSTALGIA HAS A PRICE TAG

Film photography, being an analog process, requires many more steps than digital does to achieve that textured, archival look. Unfortunately, this means incurring a few more costs than you would with digital. “The drawback is there is an extra cost to film (for developing, scanning, etc.) that clients will have to cover,” says Tai. Adds Sarah Anne, “There is lots of math and money involved with offering film as a wedding photographer. The cost of film, processing, shipping and scanning is significant. Typically, anywhere from $600 to $900 or more in hard costs alone. Not to mention, trusting your labs to not damage your film, process it correctly and, of course, trusting the mail system to get your film rolls there safely.”

DIGITAL: FAUX FILM

With modern editing software, many photographers are skilled enough to merge the benefits of film and digital by manipulating digital photos to give them that film look. “I’ve shot both film and digital in my career. A few years ago, you would be able to tell the difference between film and digital (it’s a gearrelated reason) if you’re into photography, but these days, one can’t really tell, if one is good at approximating film style using digital,” says Tai. Adds Callahan, “More advanced tech, especially medium-format digital photography, gives me the best of both worlds—I can create the look of film and satisfy those clients who want that look and feel.”

FILM: TIMELESS CHARM

At the end of the day, the appeal of film is in all its quirks, which can make it less appealing than digital on a practical level. Says Sarah Anne, “The beauty of film is in the grain and the gorgeous soft focus of certain film lenses.

There is nothing like the magic of watching your images appear on the roll of film or in the dark room while you print. Most film photographers will have their film negatives scanned for digital processing so they can match their digital files, leaving much of that magic in the past.”

“In the end, it’s a ‘nostalgic’ decision, and those who love film photography will ultimately choose it for that reason and be willing to pay the extra cost,” says Tai.

DIGITAL: FOOLPROOF

“For myself, I continue to use film photography as a personal means to grow and nurture the artist within me. Film photography has too many variables for me to trust it as a wedding photographer when a wedding day already has enough variables as it is. To be a great wedding photographer, your gear must be an extension of yourself. Using your camera must be so intuitive that you can operate with your hands on autopilot while your mind and eyes are constantly moving, thinking, calculating and watching,” says Sarah Anne.

RUI & LARRY

Married and celebrated: CEDAR SPRINGS, PORT ORCHARD

Date: AUGUST 28, 2021

Rui Fan and Larry Liang incorporated a plethora of unique and fun elements into their wedding to make for an unforgettable day. The wedding theme played off the concept of the circle, which in the Chinese tradition symbolizes unity and harmony. Floral designer and wedding planner Frigga Events wove circles throughout the wedding décor. Circles were featured in the showstopping ceremonial arch, which featured three hanging hoops brimming with florals. In another unique touch, more than 16 floral centerpiece vases were handcrafted using bamboo strips shaped into hoops. A chic color palette of yellow, green, blue and pastel pink stood out against the serene backdrop. Guests were greeted by huge balloons, which created a lively, playful ambiance. Activities like a “street fair” with games brought out the kid in all of Rui and Larry’s guests, giving them a chance to cut loose and have fun. In a sweet touch, Sugarfina candy boxes adorned the reception tables, giving guests a delicious treat to take home. But perhaps the most adorable element of the day was the couple’s dog, Array, proudly decked out in her own wedding dress.

JESS & CORI

Married and celebrated: THE MV SKANSONIA

Date: JULY 25, 2021

After taking a first look at Gas Works Park, where Jess Latousek had proposed to Cori Calico, the two strolled arm in arm to wed on the MV Skansonia, a vintage ferryboat moored on Lake Union. Jess and Cori’s Pacific Northwest nautical theme tied into their shared love of boating and being on the water. Each of them was able to carry out their dream of a bridal grand entrance, with Cori at the beginning of the processional and Jess at the end. They exchanged vows on the bow of the boat in front of their family and friends, surrounded by white florals and with the bridal party looking on in tones of blush and navy. Local seafood consisting of crab cakes and salmon added to the charm of the Northwest coast. A white nautical cake was cut open to reveal rainbow layers as a symbol of pride for their love.

AIMEE & CHASE

Married and celebrated: COZY RIVER CABIN AT MOUNT RAINIER

Date: SEPTEMBER 12, 2021

For Amie Hazama and Chase Kania’s long-awaited wedding, the couple chose an intimate wedding surrounded by family. Amie and Chase chose to take their first look from the Naches Loop Trail in Mount Rainier National Park, which overlooks several mountain lakes. Afterward, they returned to the picturesque A-frame cabin and changed into kimonos, to honor Amie’s Japanese heritage. They worked with Kimono Art Seattle when choosing and styling this look as it was an important part of the celebration for Amie. The couple then tied the knot in front of the Cowlitz River, with Chase’s brother serving as the officiant as they read vows from their journals. After the ceremony, the couple signed their marriage license with Japanese origami pens that Amie’s mother had made herself. For their romantic reception, Chase and Amie, along with their guests, danced the night away under string lights to live acoustic music. They ended the evening with Amie’s brother-in-law, a French chef, whipping up a feast of lobster salad and steak—a perfect finale to a romantic day.

KATIE & BRANDON

Married and celebrated: THE WOODMARK HOTEL & STILL SPA, KIRKLAND

Date: AUGUST 1, 2021

A year after their originally planned wedding date, Katie McCue and Brandon Miller said “I do” at The Woodmark Hotel & Still Spa. The classic white wedding, which was accented with notes of navy, was given a few personalized twists to make it unique to the couple. Set along the shores of Lake Washington, the celebration kicked off with Katie walking down the aisle in a boatneck illusion-bodice gown. The bride carried a timeless bouquet of white blooms—featuring anemones, white roses and baby’s breath—as a string quartet performed. An outdoor cocktail reception followed the ceremony, and guests were invited to take private boat tours or watch as Paige Lindsey of Paige Lindsey Designs painted a picture of the floral ceremony arch. Navy cocktail napkins were emblazoned with fun facts about the couple, noting that the newlyweds had met in theology class when Katie called out Brandon for being on his phone; and that August 1 is not only their wedding day but the day they moved into their first home together. Under a billowing tent, guests were seated at tables adorned with marble place cards, wooden table numbers, elegant white floral arrangements and place settings adorned with navy napkins to tie it all together. As the night came to an end, Katie and Brandon called upon guests to take to the dance floor and come together for s’mores around the fire.

EVELYN & KIRILL

Married and celebrated: PRIVATE TREE FARM, SNOHOMISH

Date: AUGUST 7, 2021

The tree farm on which Evelyn Gillie grew up holds a special place in her heart. As a child, she would spend time there with her three sisters and help her family with the farm. The barn eventually became the place where her then boyfriend and now husband, Kirill Kalinichev, proposed. So it seemed right to keep the special energy of the farm alive and transform it into a woodland dreamscape for the couple’s wedding. Trees were the theme of the day, with arboreal elements winding their way throughout the design. Delicate potted sapling trees that featured labels directing guests to their tables could be taken home by those friends and family to start their own tiny tree farms. Oak and Fig Floral crafted showstopping centerpieces for the dessert table and head table, creating the impression that roots were growing up directly from the pieces and unfurling overhead into a verdant canopy. Herban Feast provided a mouthwatering menu that highlighted all that the Pacific Northwest has to offer, followed by a sweet culinary finale, courtesy of Snohomish Pie Company. Although they now reside in San Francisco, Evelyn and Kirill are on the hunt for their own perfect Snohomish spot to create new memories, close to the special place where they said “I do.”

ANGELA & COLETON

Married and celebrated: TIN ROOF BARN, WHITE SALMON

Date: AUGUST 20, 2021

Angela Houser and Coleton Foruria’s nuptials took full advantage of the rustic ambiance and stunning surroundings at Tin Roof Barn. Nestled in the Columbia River Gorge and enveloped by peaceful pastures and expansive apple orchards, the venue made for “a perfect setting for a perfect day,” according to bride Angela. A unique touch was the use of hops in the décor, which was in recognition of Angela’s parents, hop farmers who have grown hops in the Yakima Valley for more than 40 years. Her parents’ farm, C&C Hop Farms, is a fourth-generation hop farm dating back to the 1900s, so it was important to Angela to honor this piece of her family’s history. To do so, hops were included in the flower arrangements, centerpieces, boutonnières, and the bar and ceremony décor. For their color palette, Angela and Coleton chose hues of green and mauve. Floral design by Trellis Flowers worked from this color palette, arranging mauve, pink and red blooms mixed with the beautiful hops. Favors for guests included adorable on-theme beer cozies inscribed with the wedding date. Airy lights and extravagant chandeliers set a simple yet refined backdrop for the reception, where guests danced the night away in celebration of the newlyweds.

ARIE & TAYLOR

Married and celebrated: ROCHE HARBOR RESORT, SAN JUAN ISLANDS

Date: MAY 10, 2019

Arie Boyd and Taylor Bateman met in an unusual way: at a crosswalk, while Taylor was driving with friends and Arie was walking with friends. She gave the men a fake name, but her friends convinced her to take Taylor and his friends up on their restaurant invitation, and the rest is history. The couple’s wedding celebration, infused with modern sophistication, was a DIY affair involving the whole family. Arie’s father crafted a ceremonial arbor using bamboo and greenery from his yard as well as succulents and peach roses to tie into the wedding’s florals. Her dad and the rest of her family also made bamboo circles that hung from above at the reception and created a doughnut wall. Her mom purchased succulents from Amazon to incorporate into the décor, affixing some of them herself to a naked cake; she also ordered the eucalyptus table décor. Arie made all the wedding signs herself, which included a welcome sign, seating chart, gift table and table names. Each table was named after an island in the San Juans, as the wedding took place at the Roche Harbor Resort on San Juan Island.

ERIN & PETER

Married and celebrated: THE ADMIRAL’S HOUSE, SEATTLE

Date: OCTOBER 16, 2021

Wedding bells were originally planned to ring for Erin Haefs and Peter Rifel in Maui, but while on a summer road trip, the two decided there was no point in waiting any longer. The two fell in love in the Emerald City, so having a Seattle-based celebration was not only more convenient, but also more authentic to their story. Erin and Peter stayed at Thompson Seattle during their wedding weekend and had their first look on the hotel’s roof. Wearing a Madison James off-the-shoulder sheath gown featuring a champagne-hued underlay and lace appliqués, Erin was the picture of classic elegance—as was Peter in a classic black tuxedo. The fall wedding naturally called for an autumnal theme, and included an apple-pie shot escort wall, rose quartz velvet linens, and an ombre floral arch in shades of bronze, dusty rose, chocolate and burgundy. Music is important to Erin and Peter, and Brooklyn Duo—a Washington-based cello-piano duo known for its classical covers of pop songs—met the couple’s every expectation. There was also no shortage of gastronomical treats for guests to enjoy. Happy hour featured smoked salmon and honeydew canapés, bite-size grilled cheese and tomato bisque shooters, which guests noshed on while taking in the views of Mount Rainier. Dinner was a family-style Italian affair with spaghetti and meatballs, chicken Parmesan, and roasted garlic and mascarpone mashed potatoes. A night of dancing under the full moon was capped off with the bride’s and groom’s favorite desserts: individually plated crème brûlée and molten chocolate cake.
