Keep Dreaming
OVER THE PAST COUPLE MONTHS
I haven't been able to turn off my mind because of so many unknowns for Wisconsin couples and wedding vendors. I have been thinking of different ways to partner with wedding businesses during this time, how to support couples changing their dreams and the new reality of future wedding days. As a publisher, as a past bride, as a previous wedding planner, and also as a partner in the Wisconsin wedding community, my heart goes out to all of you. I try to imagine and understand what is running through the hearts and minds of couples right now, and especially our amazing Wisconsin wedding vendors. I also try to imagine the brides and grooms, and all the challenges and emotions they are facing with rescheduling, postponing, and all the little details to make wedding dreams a reality. Then, as a former wedding planner, I think of all the operations that would need to be accomplished within the venue to make sure the couple's day would be absolutely perfect, but still provide a safe, healthy and happy environment for their wedding guests, the team who is working at the wedding, and again for the couple themselves. Finally, I think as a wedding vendor. These amazing people are the main resource to insure an amazing wedding day no matter if it’s postponed or not. They truly are the magicians who make all these crises disappear and surround you with positive energy for your wedding day. They got this! That’s why you hire them—they will take care of you.

Small Is Beautiful
WHEN THE GLOBAL PANDEMIC FORCED COUPLES TO CHANGE THEIR WEDDING PLANS , it didn’t stop them from getting married. Instead, it made many rethink how they would go about it.
Though some brides (and some of their mothers) have dreamed since they were little girls about a big, beautiful wedding with all the bells and whistles, many couples saw this as the perfect opportunity to cut back, pare down and simplify, to create exactly what they want: an intimate gathering that doesn’t skimp on style but is steeped in meaning.
CHANGES IN ATTITUDES
“I had started to see smaller weddings, or at least interest in them, but COVID-19 definitely has pushed this trend to the forefront,” says Keesha Jones-Sutton, owner of Hello, Divine in Milwaukee. “My couples were having a lot of anxiety about downsizing their weddings to the point of wanting to cancel. I assured them that not only would their wedding be perfect, but it would be much more meaningful because only those closest to you would be in attendance and it would be less stressful not having to worry about so many guests.”
While the big blowout didn’t happen, wedding bells still rang. They kept the wedding, just not the crowd.
“Couples have been planning their big day for a year or more, and they just want to be married,” says Amy Murphy of Relax Event Planning in Madison. “They have been looking forward to this monumental life event for a long time and some have their heart set on that specific date.”
“With social media and the pressures of family,
friends and living up to the hype, couples do feel like they have to go big or go home,” JonesSutton says. “The pandemic gave a lot of couples permission to step back and re-evaluate what was important to them and take back their power to do what would make them happy in the end. My couples all have said they couldn’t have seen their day any other way. It has been much more memorable and meaningful for them.”
A small wedding offers the opportunity to put your own stamp on it and share it with your nearest and dearest.
Unlike a wedding with hundreds of guests, you’ll have time to actually sit down and talk with your friends and family members, as well as give them a chance to get to know each other.
With a small guest list, your options are almost unlimited as far as a venue goes. The site itself can be an expression of you as a couple.
“What I’ve noticed with our clients is that many [couples] have chosen to hold their wedding at either their own home or backyard or at their family’s cabin or lake house, which makes the location more meaningful to them and their families,” says Krista Dentice, owner of Weddings With a Twist in New Berlin.
MAKE IT MEMORABLE
Since your guest list is smaller, you also might splurge on a few special touches. Be aware, though, that a small wedding doesn’t necessarily mean it will be small in expense.
HOW DO YOU DEFINE SMALL?
GRETCHEN CULVER, ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF THE NATIONAL SMALL WEDDING SOCIETY, EXPLAINS THE DIFFERENCES IN WEDDING SIZES:
A mini wedding – also known as a small wedding or intimate wedding – has fewer than 50 guests, but all the traditional elements, just on a smaller scale. The budget, however, might not be mini: The same vendors as those at a larger wedding are required, with cocktails, a meal, desserts and dancing, but with fewer people to serve, presumably in a smaller space.
A micro wedding , or tiny wedding, has 30 or fewer guests. It might last only an hour or two, just long enough for a ceremony, followed by drinks and light snacks or cake, a few photos and possibly video. Culver’s company, Minne Weddings, creates all-inclusive micro-wedding packages that include a venue, a ceremony, cake and champagne, personal flowers and a photographer. (Add-ons are available.) This size is perfect for the couple who doesn’t want to do any planning.
An elopement is when a couple gets married with just an officiant and each other (and required witnesses, depending on locale). There’s nothing traditional about this bare-bones ceremony, but some newlyweds choose to send out “Just eloped” announcements and have a party later on.
A minimony is a new trend popular with couples who just want to marry and get on with their life together. It’s an “enhanced elopement” with 10 to 20 people attending the ceremony with no celebration following, but a big party or reception planned down the road: #marrynowpartylater!
That big wedding you thought you wanted? Maybe not. Instead, make your special day about family, friends and the authentic you.
If good food, good wine and gathering with good friends are important, consider a gourmet meal in a family-style setting. Each place setting can be personalized with a special note or favor for the guest. Consider serving that deliciously decadent cake that’s a work of art in itself. If casual is more your style, end the evening around a fireplace or by a fire pit, making s’mores as a late-night snack or go nostalgic with milk and extra-special cookies.
And planners agree you should not scrimp in certain areas.
“I think number one is food,” says Oscar Sanchez of Milwaukee-based Ambrosia Events. “No matter how small or big your event, the food definitely will be a factor to enjoy the day. I mean, who doesn’t love good food?”
Murphy concurs. “Couples should not skimp on quality food and a well-stocked bar. This is a huge part in making an enjoyable total guest experience.”
You can also go all-out for elements you might otherwise feel were too indulgent, suggests Cheri Davis of Cheri Denise Events in Milwaukee: Opt for fantastic florals, exceptional décor, luxe attire.
PRESERVE THE MOMENTS
No matter the size of your wedding—even if you decide to elope—have a good photographer (and, if possible, a videographer) on hand to capture the moment.
“Don’t skimp on photography,” Murphy says. “These are photos you will look back on for years to come, and memories you will cherish for a lifetime. Find a photographer who reflects your
style and will perfectly capture your happily ever after.”
“The photographer and cinematographer capture your love story and moments that the couples are totally oblivious to,” Davis points out. When the wedding is over, you can relive it all.
VIRTUAL WEDDINGS
Another trend, particularly at the height of the pandemic: a virtual wedding, with the ceremony held online and guests “attending” from the comfort of their homes. Virtual weddings also allow guests to attend who couldn’t make it otherwise because of travel restrictions, health or comfort level, given the status of health precautions.
Sanchez recently worked on a very small ceremony in which the groom’s family couldn’t come from Peru because there were no flights, and the bride’s family was supposed to travel from Russia [but couldn’t], “so both families were watching the ceremony on livestream, and the only ones who were able to attend were eight friends from Milwaukee.”
Make sure the person who’s in charge of Zooming knows what they’re doing. Sanchez suggests having your event planner discuss the logistics with whoever will do the livestreaming. “It’s like planning a live TV show, where all the pieces have to play at the same time.”
Further, says Jones-Sutton, “The key is to practice, make sure you have the right equipment, and record.” Another important factor, she says, is to have a person in charge of Zoom to make sure everyone is muted and unmuted at the right times,
make sure angles are right, and other details that ensure a smooth event. If you don’t have a techsavvy friend, she suggests hiring a professional.
PLANNING MAKES PERFECT
If ever there’s been a time when a planner has been helpful, it’s been during the coronavirus crisis. Some couples rescheduled a spring 2020 wedding for fall 2020, only to find that large gatherings were still not safe. “A planner can assist significantly with last-minute changes, whether that be the date, location, size, or any new COVID restrictions,” Dentice says. “We also have great knowledge of what is going on in the industry, how other couples have handled COVID-related issues, and have many local vendor connections to provide services in a pinch.”
In addition, she adds, a wedding at home or in a backyard requires a lot more work and logistical issues than most couples realize—but a planner does, and can make sure no details are missed.
WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS
Planners have mixed views on future trends. “By 2022, I believe we will see the return of large weddings,” Murphy says. “Couples want to celebrate with all of their family and friends, and this is the one time in their life they have the opportunity to bring everyone together.”
Others believe that even when the coronavirus threat has declined, the pandemic has changed the essential nature of how people will gather in groups. Couples are placing more value on the ceremony itself, their vows, and having friends and family close by to share in the moment, says Davis.
Still others predict a trend of “marry now, party later,” with an elopement or very small ceremony as soon as possible, and a big celebration on the couple’s first or second anniversary.
The trend to having more small weddings is “definitely here to stay,” Jones-Sutton believes.
“I am even looking forward to doing more intimate affairs. I can really hone in on what my couples want and give them a day that is unique and more personal to them.”
Whether you’ve always dreamt of an intimate, personal event or circumstances dictated your small wedding, one thing holds true. “You should be focused on the love of your life and be present in the moment,” Jones-Sutton says. “Focus on the good. Some of the most beautiful moments are created from changed plans or mistakes.” *

Wedding Planning with Intention
text MEGAN WHITEAS SOCIAL JUSTICE PROTESTS SWEPT ACROSS THE GLOBE and prompted new levels of awareness last summer, changes were also happening in the wedding world. Locally and nationally, professionals in the industry are uniting together to empower their fellow business owners who are Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC).
How does that relate to your wedding? Your big day creates memories that last a lifetime—and planning that day can have a lasting impact on
the people who help make your vision a reality. Here are a few simple things you can do to support BIPOC vendors.
The way you plan your wedding can help change the world for the better.PHOTO BY: ROCHE BUFORD PHOTOGRAPHY.
1. CHOOSE YOUR VENDORS WITH INTENTION . You’re already researching businesses, styles and prices, so take a few minutes to research the owners, too, and keep BIPOC-owned businesses in mind. “There are a multitude of amazing and talented BIPOC vendors who are looking for a seat at the table,” says Mikel McGee of 414loral. “These vendors are often the ‘best-kept secret’” and deserve more recognition (and clients). Also keep in mind, however, that you should view diversity as more than a trend du jour: Consider such businesses as you would any vendor, and hire based on merit, expertise in their field and whether their style aligns with yours.
Besides hiring traditional wedding vendors, think outside the box for other wedding needs. Shalisa Smith, makeup artist and owner of Shalisa Elizabeth Artistry, suggests purchasing wedding party gifts from a Black-owned business, for example, or having your rehearsal dinner at a BIPOC-owned venue. “The opportunities to support are endless!” she says.
2. THANK YOUR VENDORS BOTH DURING AND AFTER THE PROCESS . A little bit of kindness can go a long way in supporting all the people who work tirelessly to bring your vision to life. Offer to donate to an organization in their name or give them a gift card to a local business to show how much you appreciate them. Likewise, Smith notes, you can also thank them buying gift cards for their services to give to others.
3. CONTINUE TO SHARE THAT APPRECIATION FOR YOUR WEDDING VENDORS AFTER THE BIG DAY. Write reviews and testimonials about your vendors’ products and services. In a world of smartphones, we often judge by the reviews that are at our fingertips. Taking a few minutes to write about how well your vendors treated you or how beautiful their creations are can help them immensely.
It’s little things like this that can help BIPOCowned businesses expand to a larger client base, says photographer Amanda Evans. “Many times clients in any industry are quick to share a negative experience they may have encountered, but not as likely to share positive experiences. Word of mouth goes a long way in our industry. Tagging artists and vendors on social media, leaving reviews on Facebook and Google, and telling family and friends help our businesses to grow and thrive. I’m very confident that I provide a great service for my clients, but it’s a matter of potential clients knowing that I even exist.”
4. PROMOTE YOUR VENDORS ON SOCIAL MEDIA. Like, comment and share the work that your vendors post on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest. To put your intentions front and center, Smith suggests using a Black-owned business as a backdrop for your engagement or wedding photos and share them on social media. Or find a cool mural created by a BIPOC artist to pose in front of, such as those in Black Cat Alley in Milwaukee, which features an array of muralists.
5. BE OPEN ABOUT YOUR OWN BACKGROUND AND THE POSSIBILITY OF DISCUSSING DIVERSITY WITH OTHERS. Express yourself and share your heritage with your vendors. They can use it as inspiration in planning for your wedding. Embracing your families’ marriage traditions and beliefs can be a powerful starting point for planning your wedding, and it’s empowering for people to see you showcasing your cultural background, especially if they see people like themselves reflected in your celebration.
Planning with a more diverse team of vendors can also present an opportunity for discussions with friends and family. Sometimes these discussions take people out of their comfort zone, but they can
The opportunities to support are endless!AMANDA EVANS PHOTOGRAPHY
also lead to constructive conversations where everyone learns something new or starts to see life from a new angle. Greater awareness and a deeper understanding of people who aren’t “like me” can help normalize the notion of diversity — that we’re all different in our own unique and beautiful ways, yet share as much or more in common with each other.
6. PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS AND INCORPORATE CHARITABLE GIVING INTO YOUR CELEBRATION. Consider forgoing the traditional wedding registry and instead donate to organizations that are working toward more inclusive communities or helping level the playing field for people from marginalized communities. In lieu of registry gifts, ask your guests to donate to an organization in your
honor. Or instead of party favors, leave a little note card at their place setting informing them that you have donated in their honor to your organization of choice. As always when making donations, be sure to vet the organizations beforehand to verify that they are legit. Don’t have time to research them? Here are a few local organizations that were suggested by McGee, Smith and Evans, and are run by BIPOC leaders:
• ACLU of Wisconsin is a state affiliate of the national American Civil Liberties Organization. It is best known for its work in the courts, legislatures and communities to defend the civil rights and liberties of all citizens.
• The DREAMer Next Door is a scholarship program for matriculating Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM)—young people who were brought here as children without documentation—who do not qualify for the federal college financial aid because of their DREAM status.
• The Milwaukee Urban League Young Professionals, an auxiliary arm of the Milwaukee Urban League, offers professional development opportunities through community service and networking.
• Public Allies provides leadership training opportunities with the goal of creating a more equitable society through more diverse leadership. *

A Place for Us
How to choose the venue that’s right for you.
Compiled by SHERRI HILDEBRANDTWHERE YOU CHOOSE TO SAY YOUR VOWS AND CELEBRATE YOUR MARRIAGE says a lot about you as a couple, so picking a venue is a crucial step and should be one of the first decisions you make together. The venue also affects how you’ll implement your décor and design. Depending on the size of your guest list and budget, the choices can be almost endless. Whether it’s a charming garden in bloom to a well-manicured country club lawn, here are a few options to help you decide on your ideal venue. Before getting your heart set on any venue, however, be sure to check for restrictions due to COVID-19.
BARNS
Many couples love a rustic barn setting—you have shelter when you need it, but also allows guests to dance under twinkling lights or a moonlit sky. A barn reception can also serve as a special nod to family history. Such a venue can occasionally present a challenge with catering, restrooms and entertainment, depending on the age and restoration of the barn. And if the barn has neither heat nor air-conditioning, considering seasonal temperatures is a must.
CHECK OUT: The Farm at Dover, Dover | The Bowery, Rubicon | Gatherings on the Ridge, Eastman | The Barn at Trinity Peak, Oconomowoc | Pioneer Creek Farm, Lomira | Enchanted Barn, Hillsdale
GARDENS
A garden’s style can determine your whole day’s vibe, but one thing is assured: Fragrant blooms and a beautiful landscape will add special flair to your day and can transform it into a dreamy affair. Allow the garden setting to speak for itself—with nature as your backdrop, your table arrangements and other décor can be simple and subtle. For this reception venue, be certain to outline a rain plan, just in case the weather is not in your favor on your special day.
CHECK OUT: The Greenhouse at Bittersweet, La Crosse | Green Bay Botanical Garden, Green Bay | Mystical Rose Gardens, Baldwin | Olbrich Botanical Gardens, Madison
BREWERIES, DISTILLERIES, VINEYARDS
We Wisconsinites love our libations, so anyplace that makes these beverages is a natural choice. Guests will love the individuality that comes with an unusual space and have fun trying out the different drinks. Many producers are located in historic buildings with rustic brick, beams and ornate woodwork. Others are in shiny new establishments and add a sleek, modern feel to your event.

EVENT CENTERS
Some event centers provide full-service packages, making the planning process easier and more affordable. Others have a preferred list of wedding vendors, so you can choose within certain parameters. Depending on the space, event centers can be easily transformed into your dream wedding. Generally, the staff is experienced and has worked with local wedding vendors, for better communication all around. One challenge is the possible turnaround time for decorating, especially when another event is scheduled the day or evening before.

HOTELS, LODGES, RESORTS
If you picture a big wedding in a grand ballroom, a hotel could be perfect for you. Hotels can easily accommodate a large group but can usually arrange an appropriate space for a smaller guest list, and the staff knows how to handle a reception of any size. You can usually reserve a block of rooms for your out-of-town guests, for added convenience. One challenge? You might be sharing the venue with another wedding party or a group of conventioneers.

MUSEUMS
A museum is a stunning and sophisticated venue for your reception. Many museums’ event staff members are experienced in executing weddings and can offer great insight for creating your ideal event. Some museums have preferred vendors, however; which may limit your options for catering or décor. The bonus with museums is that you can usually arrange for certain galleries to be open for a limited time during your event, so guests can browse the exhibits during cocktail hour.

PARKS
If a casual setting surrounded by the natural beauty of Wisconsin is your style, consider a public park. These receptions can feel relaxed and intimate, and if you’re planning a simple event for a small group, you may hold the ceremony and reception in just about any public place in the park. For a larger event, or if you require shelter or equipment, check with the park manager. Also scope out the space to make certain there are adequate restroom facilities, resources to meet your electrical needs and places to shelter in case of inclement weather. (During the COVID-19 pandemic, most visitor centers, playgrounds and enclosed shelters are closed.)
CHECK OUT: Wisconsin State Park System
HISTORIC SITES
The charm of a bygone era can set the scene for a lovely wedding that honors tradition and revels in details like high ceilings, stone fireplaces, hardwood floors and intricate carvings. Adding to the joy of the wedding is the adventure of learning something new about Wisconsin’s proud history.
CHECK OUT: The Old Courthouse Museum, West Bend | Rothschild Pavilion, Wausau | Milwaukee Athletic Club, Milwaukee | Historic Pritzlaff Building, Milwaukee | Story Hill Firehouse, Milwaukee | The Treasury, Delavan
HISTORIC HOMES
Just because you didn’t grow up in a stately mansion doesn’t mean you can’t get married in one. A reception in a historic home, many on
the National Register of Historic Places and sometimes open to the public for tours, can satisfy that dream of luxe living. Many historic homes have event planners and can take care of details such as catering, décor, preparation and cleanup for you. Sometimes availability is limited depending on tour schedules, and not all homes can accommodate large groups.
CHECK OUT: Paine Art Center and Gardens, Oshkosh | Villa Filomena, Milwaukee | Fairlawn Mansion, Superior | The Wisconsin Club’s City Club, Milwaukee
PRIVATE HOME OR BACK YARD
A private home can provide a unique space all your own, often filled with special meaning. Preparations and day-of workload may discourage many parents or friends from offering their homes, however, and size restrictions can also come into play. Among other challenges are arranging for adequate kitchen space, restrooms and parking. Inform the neighbors of the special occasion so they can anticipate traffic and possible noise (and not call law enforcement with a complaint).
COUNTRY CLUBS
If you dream of a classic space, a country club could be your best fit. Set on immaculate greens, country clubs offer sophisticated style and brilliant outdoor space, and frequently offer event planning services as well as in-house catering. Your event may not be totally private, however, if club members can access the pool or grounds.

RESTAURANTS
For a small, intimate wedding, a restaurant is an excellent option. With possibilities for a unique menu and cozy ambience, this type of reception venue is relatively stress-free; guests could even order directly from the menu. Prior to booking your event, consult with the restaurant owner or general manager about space limitations and noise level during the time frame you are considering. If noise is a concern, inquire about a separate area or private event room for your reception. Some restaurants will rent the entire space for your event, in which case they’ll close it to the public. Check with your personal favorites to learn about availability!
TENTS
A tented reception is a fantastic option that can comfortably accommodate a large guest list. While providing guests with shade and cover (and sometimes air conditioning or heat), everyone can still enjoy the sunset and dance into the evening under the stars. A tent company will have many options to choose from, including lighting, table and chair rentals. Before finalizing arrangements, get to know your site so you can provide any electrical outlet information to your rental company.

Ask Us Anything
Your wedding worries, solved.
SYDNEY STEVENSQ:This is embarrassing, but I’m terrified of choosing a wedding gown. I don’t have the greatest figure—at least I don’t think I do—so shopping for the perfect dress is daunting. How will I ever find something that I like that I also think l ooks good on me?
A:Whether you’re a size 2 or 22, finding the perfect gown can be stressful. Brides-to-be can find themselves overwhelmed with too many—or too few—options. Stay positive and focus on finding the dress that helps you radiate confidence. “Self-love” might be an overused term, but it’s essential when you’re shopping for your wedding dress.
FIND INSPIRATION
Don’t worry if you’re not sure of the style you want; you’re not alone. Start with a list of everything you think you want in a gown, like lace
details, low back, sweetheart neckline, etc. Look at gowns on Pinterest (or in Wisconsin Bride !) Once you’re ready to step into the shop, bring pictures so your stylist has an idea of what you like and think you want. That said, be open: Just because you don’t like the style in a photo doesn’t mean you won’t like it on yourself. Your stylist can show you things you might not even have thought of, explains Jennifer Kapinus at Vera’s House of Bridals (and granddaughter of Vera herself), and most brides surprise themselves with what they fall in love with.
SCOUTING EXPEDITION
Do a little recon, visiting various stores. Check out websites, social media and reviews to narrow down your list. Look for shops that have a variety of styles and price options, and a staff you like, trust and treat you like the VIP you are. While doing recon, ask about in-store sizing. “It’s not uncommon to find your dream gown without seeing it in exactly your size,” Kapinus says, “but you will still want to be able to try on gowns that fit well.” Discuss in advance the styles you like and make sure they have those in your size. And be aware that bridal gowns differ in sizes from designer to designer and fit differently than everyday clothing. “Try not to fixate on the size of the gown that you are in; a dress fitting well is so much more important than the number on the tag,” Kapinus advises.
BRING ON YOUR BESTIES
When you gather your group for the appointment, keep it light. Choose friends and/or family who make you feel your best—no negative energy allowed—but will also be honest and respect your decisions. And keep it a small, intimate group. You want opinions, but not too many.
PRE-APPOINTMENT
Before you walk through the shop doors, do your hair, makeup and anything else that makes you feel like your best self. Kapinus suggests wearing something you’re comfortable in and bringing undergarments and/or shapewear if you want. “Keep in mind your stylist will be helping you in and out of the gowns, so most brides wear nude underwear and a strapless bra,” she says. Hate strapless bras? No problem. Most bridal gowns have built-in bra cups for extra support.
BRING IT ON
Once at your appointment, remember to keep that positive energy flowing. If a gown doesn’t feel right, don’t get discouraged — there’s always another to try on. And remember, the person you’re marrying already thinks you’re beautiful; what you wear should just help you feel even more so, all the way down the aisle.

Q:We’ve barely gotten engaged, and already people are telling me I have to start sending out announcements! What’s the protocol for announcements and invitations?
A:You want your stationery to be as unique as your relationship, to reflect who you are as a couple, so finding the right designer or graphic artist early is a must. Once you choose your designer, they can advise you on the ins and outs, but here are some general guidelines.
SAVE-THE-DATES
Order 10-12 months before the wedding; send 6-12 months before These will be hanging on your guests’ fridges for a while, so make sure you love them. The cards should include you and your partner’s names, the wedding date or weekend, and a
location. If you have yet to pick a venue, add the city or town. A savethe-date card can also say “formal invitation to follow,” to give guests a heads up. Some couples just go with text and a design, while others use an engagement photo.
Star McMurtry, owner of Taylor Design & Stationery in Franklin, suggests adding an extra two months for sending destination wedding save-the-dates. This gives guests time to clear their calendars and make travel plans. “It also gives them something to look forward to—the wedding invitation!” she notes.
Q:My fiancé and I have been talking about whether I’ll take his last name or keep my own. I’m so conflicted! Could I ask him to take my last name, or is that just not a thing?
ENGAGEMENT PARTY INVITES
Send 4 weeks before the party Engagement parties can be a nice prequel for guests to meet before the big day. Some couples have a get-together right after the proposal, others wait up to three months post-engagement, so work backward to figure out when to finalize your design.
WEDDING INVITATIONS
Finalize design: 5-8 months before; send 2 months before This is the go-to information card for your guests. A traditional invite includes a host line, usually the couple’s parents. Then comes the request line where you ask your guests to attend; next come the couple’s names, followed by the date, time, and ceremony and reception location(s). There are endless wording options; if in doubt, ask your stationer.
McMurtry says for local weddings, couples should be discussing design concepts with their designer and placing orders five to six months before their wedding day. For destination weddings, couples can begin as early as eight months before, no later than six months. Many couples like to match the invitation suite to their wedding palette for
ASK YOUR SPOUSE TO TAKE YOUR LAST NAME
a cohesive look, but Debbie Pape of Paper Envy in Elm Grove says working with your stationer early not only allows you to get exactly what you want but also helps you figure out what other details still need to be discussed and gathered, such as guest accommodations. Make sure you add an RSVP deadline so you can get the final guest count to your venue on time. (It’s also fun to see who is coming so you can play match-maker with your single friends.)
DAY-OF STATIONERY
Finalize design: 2-3 months before Your guests will be eyeing the dayof stationery all day (and night)— place cards, seating charts, signs, menus, program, favors, etc.
Two to three months before the wedding is a great time to sit down with your stationer, since, as Pape notes, other wedding elements come into play. For example, your stationer will need dinner choices for the response card and/or menu, so plan your tasting dates accordingly.
“It’s OK if you don’t have all this information when you first sit down with the stationer,” Pape says. “It’s a process that we work together on, and it’s typically a super-fun experience.”
A:
Taking the last name of your spouse is a tradition you don’t have to follow. In the olden days, it signified that the wife was “transferred” from her family’s property to the husband’s. Today, marriage is about two people who love each other, name change or not, so switch it up if you want. Our wedding professionals offer a few ideas.
IF IT AIN’T BROKE
A lot of brides keep their name because it’s the zero-hassle option—no need to change social media, business cards or legal documents—and it’s certainly not unheard-of these days.
This option offers a shared name as a couple. “You may feel uncomfortable changing your last name, but your partner may feel less attached to theirs,” says Genesis Lopez of Ambrosia Events. “Have a conversation with your partner about their feelings on taking your last name.”
HYPHENATE
Hyphens can work wonders. A small dash between you and your spouse’s last name is the perfect way to recognize both families—even better if the names sound great together. Remember, though, if kids are in your future: Will the name be awkward to pronounce? Will it create challenges if they marry someone with a hyphenated name?
MERGE OR CREATE A NEW ONE
Merging your last names together can be a fun way to make something brand-new for the both
of you. “It’s a great way to represent unity and the start of a new life together,” Lopez says. Or simply invent something new. “Not only are you passing on your new last name,” says Meredith Sipe, CEO and owner of Blue Fancy Events, “but you’re passing on a pretty cool story for your future children and grandchildren.”
KEEP
YOUR NAME PUBLICLY
This is a great option for all you professionals out there. Legally, you take your spouse’s last name, but continue to use your unmarried name in work situations (for example, if you’re a magazine writer).
MAKE YOUR LAST NAME YOUR MIDDLE NAME
If you’re planning on having kids, this is a great way to keep the name in the family. Whatever you decide, do it confidently—there’s no right or wrong answer. *

LOVE AT THE LAKE
Lauren & Tim
TEXT: Sydney Stevens
WEDDING: September 21, 2019
CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Big Foot Country Club, Lake Geneva
HONEYMOON: Postponed due to COVID
PHOTOGRAPHY
Lauren O’Brien was 10 years old when she decided 14-year-old Tim Allen was her “ultimate childhood crush” after they met at family gatherings at Lake Geneva. Ten years later, Tim’s dad learned about the crush and was successful in his mission to set them up. Fast forward four summers, and the two were back at the lake where it all started. Tim told Lauren he couldn't imagine spending the rest of his life without her. After Lauren said “yes!” she was surprised to see her closest family and friends waiting in Abbey Harbor House to celebrate their engagement. On their wedding day, the rain forced the ceremony inside, but the planner and vendors did a seamless job transitioning. Lauren and Tim said “I do” in the ballroom
under a large floral circle filled with greenery and white flowers, a gift from the florist. A neutral palette of white and silver decorated the venue, with light blue in the linens and floral bouquets to adding a pop of color. Guests could sip on some bubbly at the custom-made Champagne wall, which was the talk of the night, or head over to the “You + Me” neon sign above the fireplace for a photo-op. The couple’s favorite part of the night was hearing the speeches about their love story through the eyes of family and friends. But nothing could top the sentimental speech from Lauren’s dad. “He gave his blessing, and you could see how happy he was that Timmy and I would be spending our lives together,” Lauren says.

WEDDING: July 6, 2019
CEREMONY: Church of the Gesu, Milwaukee
RECEPTION: Blue Mound Golf & Country Club, Wauwatosa
HONEYMOON: Hawaii
PHOTOGRAPHY Hart & Fig Photography
Catherine Snow took the phrase “love thy neighbor” seriously when she met her downstairs neighbor Ben Miller their sophomore year at the University of Dayton. Their neighborly friendship turned romantic when Ben asked Catherine to be his date at a family wedding in the summer before their junior year. Eight and a half years later, Ben pulled off the charming proposal Catherine had always dreamed of, when she came home after work to find their dog, Riri, with a ring box hanging from her collar. After his proposal, Ben surprised her again, with close friends waiting to celebrate at a dinner at Pizza Man off Downer, their go-to date spot at the time. The couple’s wedding vision of sexy chic came together perfectly with a black and
white design theme. Catherine carried white peonies with pops of green, tall black centerpieces with ferns adorned some tables, while others had mini bouquets matching the bride’s, with candles for a romantic touch; the cake was kept simple, with a fern design to match the centerpieces. The cigar bar outside served dark liquor and included monogrammed matchbooks, an homage to Catherine’s childhood in Chicago, when she would accompany her dad to cigar shops. “I remember loving those boxes and the smells. It was something I always wanted at our wedding,” she said. As the sun went down on their perfect July day, everyone gathered on the dance floor to celebrate Catherine and Ben’s everlasting love.

WINTER WONDERLAND
Jennifer & Matthew
TEXT: Sydney Stevens
WEDDING: January 4, 2020 CEREMONY: St. Patrick’s, Racine
RECEPTION: The Covenant at Murray Mansion, Racine
HONEYMOON: Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
PHOTOGRAPHY
The Paper Elephant
Jennifer McIlquham’s dog, Helix, knew her “mom” and Matthew Suarez were destined to be together. Jennifer and Matthew were each out walking their dogs when Helix broke free and ran to Matthew’s dog, Reggie. “They started playing, and the rest is history!” Jennifer says. Fast-forward two years at the same park: Matthew got down on one knee to propose. The couple’s January wedding day was warmed by family taking part in their Catholic ceremony. Godparents brought gifts down the aisle and walked in the procession to make the day even more special. Murray Mansion became an elegant winter wonderland, with evergreen trees embellished according to the white, silver and
green palette. Small pine tree centerpieces decorated the guest tables while white houses with lights and garlands adorned the head table. One of the couple’s favorite moments — second only to their first sight of each other in the church — was when the two went up to the balcony during the reception. “We took a minute to ourselves to take everything in from the day and enjoy looking out at everyone who was there to support us and our future,” Jennifer says. Guests received chocolates Jennifer had hand-wrapped and placed in boxes with wooden name tags. The big surprise: The newlyweds held a gender reveal after the ceremony to share the news of their baby-to-be: It’s a girl!

Natalie & Trevor TEXT: Sherri HildebrandtWEDDING: September 14, 2019
CEREMONY & RECEPTION: The Gardens Wedding Center, Allenton
HONEYMOON: Belize
Brianna Lane Photography
When Natalie Kraemer was a junior in high school in 2008, she met a college freshman named Trevor Anderson at a friend’s house. The two dated for a couple years, broke up, but occasionally ran into each other while attending the same college and when they both briefly lived in Atlanta. Cut to 2018: Natalie and Trevor met for dinner in Minneapolis, and the old feelings reignited. Ten years after they first dated, they were married on what Natalie describes as “the best day ever,” in an outdoor ceremony with family and friends from across the country. The day had a relaxed feel: The bride went barefoot and wore flowers in her hair. Her gown was personalized with shoulder straps fashioned from lace from her mother’s wedding dress. Family and friends played a big part in
the ceremony. As she walked down the aisle, Natalie’s sister sang “Beautiful Things” by Gungor; the officiant was a friend of both bride and groom, and the bride’s cousin served as videographer. The couple wanted a reception with a backyard vibe, so with the help of her mother and friends, Natalie used an abundance of flowers from their own yard, along with some purchased blooms to create everything from centerpieces to boutonnieres, and used items from her mother’s rental company to create table décor and displays. Adding to the backyard-party feel were games and good eats, with an ice cream truck serving up dessert. After dinner, the couple managed to slip away for a moment alone to enjoy the sunset and revel in newlywed bliss.

HONEYMOON: Oahu, Hawaii
PHOTOGRAPHY Something Unique Film
Lauren Hill had a “thing” for Miguel Lunar after they met in high school, when she was a freshman and he a sophomore. Their friendship deepened after when Miguel returned from his first deployment in the Middle East in December 2017. The connection was strong, and the two spent most of the next two weeks together. After more than a year of dating, the two headed to Milwaukee from Washington to surprise their families for Easter weekend. But Lauren was in for the real surprise. Miguel had told her his younger sister needed to take photos of them for a school project. Miguel's family went to the Milwaukee Art Museum, one of Lauren’s favorite places, to snap some of the pictures. Miguel was standing behind Lauren, looking out at Lake Michigan
on the Calatrava Bridge, when he popped the question — perfectly, according to Lauren. “He is so sentimental and listens to every little detail that I love about everything, so he most definitely nailed it,” she says. The wedding featured a simple palette of neutrals with natural greens, with an elegant eucalyptus and ranunculus display above the altar. The wedding was truly a family affair: Lauren honored her parents by having them walk her down the aisle; her brother served as the officiant, and they made time to celebrate her mom’s 60th birthday, which fell on the wedding day. Miguel’s dad and stepmom used wood from his grandmother’s yard to make the centerpieces and altar, matching the rustic-chic theme.

Alli Sontag and Nolan Hartwick have Badger football to thank for their serendipitous tailgate meeting. Even though the two moved to Chicago after graduating from UW-Madison, they return every fall to cheer on their alma mater. Three years into dating, the couple was enjoying a picnic by Lake Michigan when Nolan pulled a handmade picture frame out of his backpack and said they needed to make a new memory to put in the frame. He pulled out the ring and popped the question just as the sun was setting over the lake. The couple exchanged “I do’s” looking at Lake Mendota from The Edgewater,
which combined the classic and modern Madison the two fell in love with. Alli and Nolan paid homage to their favorite city by having bag boards, hand-decorated cookies, Ian’s Pizza and, of course, a guest appearance from Bucky Badger. By the end of the night, the photo guest book was filled with Polaroids and notes for the bride and groom for a fun keepsake. But nothing could compare to the feeling the couple had at the ceremony. “It was such an emotional moment seeing each other for the first time as I walked down the aisle to Nolan, and it made the ceremony even more meaningful to both of us,” Alli says.

Claudia Cabrera and Lee Meyer’s romance stood the challenge of time and distance even before their marriage. The two met in Claudia’s native Venezuela in 2014, when Lee was there working with a baseball team. After that day, “we didn’t stop talking,” Claudia says. The conversation continued with Claudia’s move to the U.S. They were in Fresno, California, and about to drive to Lee’s hometown of Pound, Wisconsin, but decided to spend a few days in Carmel. After watching a Packers game, they went for a walk on the beach with their puppy, appropriately named Lambeau, when Lee asked a group of young people to take their photo. In reality, he was confiding that
he was about to propose and asking if they would take a video of the magic moment. The ceremony was equally magical, made even more meaningful for Claudia when the musicians sang a song in Spanish that her late grandma sang to her as girl. A highlight at the reception was entertainment by dueling pianos and other instruments. “It was as special as we dreamt,” Lee says. A “memory table” added a unique touch: a table set with chairs, place cards, linens and centerpieces for the people Lee and Claudia loved who have passed on. “Our cultural backgrounds are so different,” Claudia says, but both families enjoyed the mix and joyously celebrated the new couple.

Angela Wierzbicki and Ryan Capwell created a wedding day that will be remembered as a relaxed, festive gathering of family and friends, full of personal touches. It was even more of a family affair at the reception, when they marked Angie’s grandparents’ 65th wedding anniversary with a special cake, made by her mother. At their outdoor ceremony, the new couple mixed soil from each of their parents’ properties as part of a unity ritual, then planted a tree. The couple, who met while working at a local grocery store, wanted to have a natural theme, so The Greenhouse at Bittersweet Flower Market made the perfect blooming background, as well as providing plants and flowers galore for the venue, including thistles and dahlias in autumn
colors in the arrangements. Personal touches included centerpieces using her grandmother’s antique blue Mason jars filled with fairy lights, while family and friends made many of the signs and other décor. The little ones had their own special table with snacks and treats, plus specially drawn cartoon pictures of the bride and groom to color. Pets weren’t forgotten, either. Signature drinks gave a nod to their pets: the Augie Grog (a rum punch) in honor of their dog, and the Crosby Cooler (a vodka spritzer) for their cat. “The best part of our day is that it felt like no stress and just love and enjoyment from family and friends,” Angie says. “Ryan and I are pretty goofy, so we kept it light and just had fun together.”

WEDDING: November 1, 2019
CEREMONY & RECEPTION: The Lageret, Stoughton
HONEYMOON: Aruba

Oh la la! What could be more romantic than a marriage proposal on a bridge in Paris with the Eiffel Tower in the background? Joey Broms had planned his March 2019 proposal to Lindsay Stephan, right down to reading an original poem, with a secret photographer standing by, ready to capture the proposal for posterity. The couple met in 2016 at an internship at Caterpillar in their hometown of Peoria, Illinois; they grew up only 15 minutes from each other and even had mutual friends, but didn't meet until their internships; Lindsay took the initiative, emailed Joey for a date and their love story began. Friends, family and pets were an important part
of their wedding day. Joey’s best friend from high school officiated, and another friend sang a song he wrote with Joey. Signature drinks were named after their dogs: a Sullivan James (bourbon old-fashioned) and a Heidi Ru (raspberry gin fizz). The couple chose rich, autumnal colors with touches of gold throughout, with vintage accessories picking up gilt tones. “The day went by in the blink of an eye,” Lindsay says, but their “first look” in Viking Park lingers as “…a quiet moment, just the two of us, where we were able to take a deep breath and hold each other as singles one last time.” Another memorable moment: Their sparkler sendoff in a classic 1920s Cadillac.

Sara Kekula and Jake Fleming’s love story was all thanks to a “chance meeting” at an after-work happy hour. But this was no accident: They later learned that a co-worker and mutual friend planned the set-up. After blissfully dating for five months, Jake and his puppy, Prince, moved in with Sara. Two years later, the couple was on a snowy mountain hike during a ski trip in Colorado when Jake proposed. Sara suspected something was up, because he kept toying with his jacket pocket. “Turns out, while hiking in 2½ feet of snow, Jake kept the wedding ring in his zipper pocket—it wasn’t in a box. Thank goodness we didn’t lose that ring in the snow!” she says. The wedding represented the couple perfectly. Guests were greeted by
a “Bubbles & Buds” entrance wall, where guests could select Champagne (Sara’s drink of choice), or Jake’s go-to, Bud Light. Channeling a cozy “up north” vibe, seasonal greenery, pendant lighting and Edison bulbs were blended into the neutral color palette. The exposed brick, walls of windows and warm wood tones added to the charm. Jake’s favorite moment was “standing at the altar and feeling so incredibly happy as I saw Sara walking down the aisle. That’s the moment that I’ll never forget,” he says. The drinks flowed, with three specialty cocktails dedicated to their three beloved dogs. From an area to snap Polaroid pictures to a cigar station on the rooftop, the night was unforgettable — as it should be.

WEDDING: August 24, 2019 CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Bride’s family estate, Williams Bay, Lake Geneva
HONEYMOON: Santorini and Mykonos, Greece
PHOTOGRAPHY
Not many people can say they got married where they spent much of their youth, but that’s just what Caitlin Macy Faber and Joseph Marconi did. “Lake Geneva is our happy place,” Cait says. “It’s where we made all our favorite memories together.” The high school sweethearts walked to school together every day in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and spent time at Lake Geneva each summer with their families. Even four years apart while they attended college—she in Texas, he in Iowa—didn’t divide them. In 2018, with family members peeking from the lake house, Joe took Cait to the lakefront and proposed. Cait wanted the natural beauty of the lake and surrounding greenery to speak for itself at their wedding, so the couple kept the palette fairly neutral, with blues and grays, and emphasized lighting the
large willow trees and surrounding area. Along with touching moments, like when Joey whispered “You look so beautiful” to Cait just before the ceremony started, they created some offbeat memories, too. The entire 20-person bridal party nearly ended up in the lake when they posed for photos on the dock and suddenly heard a huge CRACK! as the dock began to sink. (Luckily, no one fell in.) And Joey, who said all he wanted for the wedding dinner was a Culver’s burger and Portillo’s chocolate cake, got his wish: a Culver’s cheeseburger was served on a silver platter at dinner, and Portillo’s chocolate cake was served to all the guests. Since Cait’s father loves setting off fireworks, they were a must, and the evening ended dramatically as the skies lit up. “He did not disappoint,” says Cait.

During their sophomore year at Hudson High School, Ariez Sime would throw candy at Elise Martin to get her attention when she walked into math class. Their relationship only grew sweeter during summers in high school and college, when they spent time at Ariez’s grandparents’ place on the St. Croix River. That’s where he proposed in 2017, at sunset on a summer night. “We had a short ceremony with some of our favorite Bible verses that reminded us to remain grounded in faith, love one another and see the beauty in the mundane,” Elise says. The peace and intimacy of Birch Hill Barn made their venue choice an easy one, and personal
touches—such as chocolates for their guests from Knoke’s Chocolate in Hudson, the same kind that Ariez would put in Elise’s backpack to surprise her—made the day even more special. Elise credits Studio Fleurette for the boho chic vibe she sought in the décor, using “flowers and more flowers,” glass votives, delicate linens and chandeliers, with greenery, vines and loose flowers strewn across the reception tables. Elise recalls an especially vivid moment just before the ceremony when she had some time alone. “I took a minute to pause and realize how blessed I was,” she says, “and how excited I felt to be marrying my best friend.” *

A hint of mauve in the place settings from Relics Rentals complements the delicate pink pop of the zinnias for a welcoming place to dine with your closest friends. *

FLOATING FLORALS SET THE TONE FOR A DREAMY WEDDING DAY AT THE FARM AT DOVER.

(1) The groom makes a statement in a tan suit paired with a light pink bowtie from Nedrebo’s Formal Wear. The boutonnière by 414loral features bunny tail, snowberry and bleached Israeli ruscus, gathered with a tangerine ribbon for a touch of color.
(2) There’s no love quite like puppy love. Gramps, the star of the show, bears breathtaking botanicals—silver dollar eucalyptus, knifeblade acacia, salmon cremones and quicksand roses—courtesy of his owner, 414loral.
(3) Petite Parisian pastries by Le Macaron adorn the sweets table, accompanied by toffee, quicksand and white majolica spray roses, blush chrysanthemums, dried fan palms, white hydrangeas, vintage carnations, phalaenopsis orchids and blackberry lily seeds from Blooms by Brandi.
(opposite page) Under the suspended bouquet by Evoke Chancy Floral, rose-gold cups accent a dusty mauve tablecloth, harmonizing with the soft hues of the centerpiece of roses, bunny tails, pampas grass, dahlias, scabiosa pods, bleached ruscus and foraged grasses, created by daffodil*parker.
(this page) The groom whispers sweet nothings to his bride, resplendent in the “Phoebe” dress by Kelly Faetanini from White Dress Bridal Boutique; chic meets sexy with a sweetheart neckline and offthe-shoulder straps, accessorized with a headpiece from Jaxie and earrings from Haute Bride. Moody makeup partners with a bouquet bursting with knifeblade acacia, pampas grass, bunny tails, salmon cremones, snowberry, quicksand roses and bleached Israeli ruscus, by 414loral.
(1) Guest will eagerly RSVP when they see these memorable invites. Debbie Pape, owner of Paper Envy, designed this suite featuring earthy elements: floral art and fringed brown ribbon, plus a hint of glam with the gold shimmer lining the envelope.
(2) These one-of-a-kind floral installations by Blooms by Brandi frame the natural altar for an unforgettable place to tie the knot. The florals include an eye-catching array of foraged, fresh and dried botanicals in soft neutral tones and unexpected textures.
(3) A sip of bubbly amid lavish blooms is always a winning combination. This centerpiece by daffodil*parker features spirea, blackberry lily pods, standard roses, spray roses, sedum, rice flower, echinacea pods, fan palms, pampas grass, seasonal hydrangea, foraged grasses and strawflower. *

It’s never too early to start planning. Follow these steps and you’ll be well on your way to matrimonial bliss.
Book hair and makeup artists for the big day. Reserve event necessities. Book portable toilets for outdoor events, extra chairs, linens, lighting and so on.
Start making a day-of timeline, determining what should happen when (speeches, first dance, etc).
Book a block of hotel rooms near the reception site for out-of-town guests. Register for gifts at two to three places. Start to keep track of favorite songs.
4 TO 6 MONTHS BEFORE:
Order all wedding stationery (invitations, envelopes, thank-you notes) and work out pricing for programs, menus and place cards, which will be printed closer to the date. Hire wedding-day transportation. Book flights and hotel reservations for your honeymoon.

Visit the salon for one last cut and color. Send escort cards and the seating chart to your calligrapher to fill in guests’ names and table numbers.
Enter RSVPs into a guest-list database, and call invitees who haven’t yet responded. Get your marriage license. If you’re changing your name, order several extra copies. If changing your name, make arrangements with Social Security, Department of Motor Vehicles, credit card companies and your bank. Mail the rehearsal dinner invitations, if applicable.
Stock the bar using your final head count as a guide. Send out as many final vendor payments as you can.
Provide addresses for drivers of transport vehicles.
Create a must-take “shot list” and discuss it with your photographer.
1 WEEK BEFORE:
Compile the fees that will be due on the wedding day.
Give the caterer a final head count. Appoint a reliable pal to transport the cake knife, toasting glasses, etc. to and from the reception site.
Get final beauty treatments (facial, waxing, brow-shaping, etc.).
Pack for the honeymoon. Ask someone to bring your luggage to the reception if you’re leaving from there.
Give your honeymoon itinerary to a friend or family member in case of emergency. Pick up your dress or make arrangements for it to be fetched or delivered.
Arrange for the cake to be delivered to the reception venue.
Buy a guest book, if you choose to use one. Delegate small wedding-day tasks: someone to carry your things; someone to bustle your dress; someone to manage the gifts; someone to hand out tips; and so on.
Send a timeline to the bridal party, including every member’s contact information. Break in your shoes.
Assemble and distribute welcome baskets to out-of-town guests, if desired. Pick up wedding rings, check engravings and sizes.
Remind men to pick up formalwear and shoes, and check them for fit.
If you don’t have a personal attendant, ask a friend to help you get dressed on the big day. Talk to head usher about any special seating arrangements.
Arrange for a light snack for the wedding party to eat while getting ready for the ceremony.
LAST 24 HOURS:
Help decorate the venue, if necessary. Have a manicure, pedicure and any other last-minute pampering treatments. Distribute thank-you gifts to the wedding party, special attendants and parents. Organize for a note or gift to be delivered to your fiancé on the wedding day.
Take a relaxing bath, go to bed early and start getting excited. You’re about to get married! *
