ED’S note Welcome to Issue 11 of the Soccerzela monthly magazine. The 2020/2021 season is well and truly underway with a number of new teams yet strangely packed with familiar faces. We took a look at all of the squad lists ahead of the close of the transfer window. While South Africa rightfully focuses on justice being served in terms of the killing of former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates superstar Senzo Meyiwa over six years ago, many have forgotten the rich legacy Ndzori left behind. We relived his inspiring journey in football which saw him become the Bafana Bafana number one before tragically being murdered. Themba Zwane was the voted as the 2019/2020 Player of the Season, an accolade which many believe came far too late for the Mamelodi Sundowns superstar, however where does he sit on the list of South African football greats and what does he need to do to reach the top? We also caught up with one of the current kingpins of South African social media Cellular Maake, the son of Kaizer Chiefs super-fan Sadam Maake, regarding his passion for football and plans on the administrative side of the game. Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

To the eye, you wouldn’t necessarily picture a midfield imposer who has dominated the Premier Soccer League when you look at him. Zwane cuts a diminutive figure and lacks the pace and power associated with the modern day athlete. However, what he lacks in physicality is more than compensated for in technical ability. In one word, Themba Zwane is best described as ‘silky’. Football is known as the beautiful game and players like Zwane personify this in its pristine form. His match awareness is second to none and that telepathic reading is supplemented to perfection by his sublime feet. Magical touch after magical touch at Mamelodi Sundowns. It’s almost a crime against football that it has taken ‘Mshishi’ this long to be awarded with the top footballer in the PSL awards.

CHAT CORNER
Zwane has been amongst the top performers in the league for a number of years, but it was actually Clive Barker who spotted his brilliance when he was sent out on loan to Mpumalanga Black Aces from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2013. Barker went as far as saying Mshishi reminded him of the great Doctor Khumalo. Many might have thought Clive Barker was over-exaggerating when he singled out Themba Zwane as the best player the former Bafana Bafana coach had ever worked with. However Mshishi is beginning to peak and not many can argue that he’s right up there among the best. Following on from the belief of Barker, Zwane has tasted his greatest success with former mentor Pitso Mosimane. Mosimane and Zwane have walked a long but trophy-laden journey right to the top of African football together. “I would like to thank coach Pitso for everything he has done for us as a team‚ and we wish him the best for his new challenge‚” Zwane said following his PSL Player of the Season triumph. “And for the coaches we have now‚ obviously we are willing to work hard and try to give them what they want from us as a team - to win and achieve. “He (Pitso) has played a big role in the team - and for the country

- including the players. He would always motivate the guys to work hard. His mental attitude is to always be on your toes and don’t take things for granted – you play one game, forget about it and focus on the next. You keep moving forward. Always improving and never settling for mediocrity. “Coach Pitso was always motivating me and pushing me: Mshishi, you need to create more; Mshishi, you need to score more; Mshishi, you need to make the team play; you need to take care of yourself so you can avoid injuries. I really appreciate working with him.”

Zwane has already won 11 domestic trophies including five League titles while conquering Africa after winning both the Champions League and Super Cup. The next step for him is to firmly place his name amongst the country’s greats and to lead Bafana Bafana to glory; and for this to happen, Clive Barker believes it is of utmost importance that Molefi Ntseki builds his national team around Themba Zwane. “Build the team around Themba Zwane. In different ways, he reminds me a lot of Doctor Khumalo. He is not as good as Doctor but he creates things and scores goals‚ he gets himself in the box where he is very good. I was delighted to watch his career and I think we can build around him,” the former AFCON winning coach said. Zwane himself has acknowledged it’s time to start achieving something with the national team, “Yes, it is true I haven’t enjoyed the same type of success I’ve been enjoying with Sundowns. I want to change that with the national team. I believe it is possible. We reached the quarter-finals in the 2019 Afcon and we have to keep progressing until we reach the pinnacle.” “I also want to win something with my country. If I can do that, I’ll be a very happy man. It’s all about knowing your opponents

very well. We do a lot of research at Sundowns about our opponents. We’ve also got the ability to win games away from home but the national team is progressing as far as I’m concerned. Hopefully we will deliver soon.”

Zwane’s 2019/20 campaign will be widely regarded as the crowning moment of his career after inspiring Mamelodi Sundowns to a domestic treble – the Absa Premiership, Nedbank Cup and Telkom Knockout. The 31-year-old still has at least 3 more years of football left in him should everything go according to plan.
him inspire me. They are team legends and I too, want to be a legendary Sundowns player one day. We’ve been doing well and working with the coaches preparing for the new season. It feels good that we are ready to do battle this season again. I know it won’t be easy but we are going to go out and fight till the end once more.”
“It was a great season, working with these talented guys at the club, as they pushed me to play my best and everyone on the team worked hard. We as a team are in a great environment; we want to push and win trophies – it’s what our club is about. I want to continue to fight for the team. I want to achieve more,” Zwane added regarding his triumph at the PSL awards.
One definite area in which many people fault Themba Zwane in is the finishing department. While he’s beginning to find the back of the net more consistently as he ages, many argue that he’s not ruthless enough in front of goal and the Mamelodi Sundowns attacker admitted that it’s a part of his game where there is a need for improvement.
“Some players, such as Surprise Moriri, have played for the club before me, and players like
“It’s getting there, but I need to improve my finishing and make the right decisions in the final third. Our combination play is becoming better and improving greatly but there is room for improvement with regards to finishing.” In years to come, football fans will celebrate this era as the greatest in Mamelodi Sundowns’ history, not only for the long list of trophies but more importantly for that phenomenal brand of play that set the standards for South African football going forward. Zwane has been at the core of it alongside the likes of Hlompho Kekana and Dennis Onyango. Ù

TIMEOUT WITH
CELLULAR MAAKE BY HAPPY MASANGO
The name Freddie Saddam Maake will go on to be remembered for life after he invented the ‘Vuvuzela’. Maake, a superfan of Kaizer Chiefs is one of the household fan names of South African football and his legacy is slowly being passed on to his son Cellular Maake. Cellular Maake has been taking social media by storm recently. The Soccerzela team caught up with the sport development enthusiast who just graduated from the University of Johannesburg, regarding his journey with Kaizer Chiefs alongside his famous father, his
SOCCERZELA.CO.ZA
classroom ambitions and his future plans. Q: At what age did your passion for football begin at? A: Honestly, the passion for football began when I was very young. Growing up in a family that’s passionate about sport makes one to be passionate as well. But around 2010 that’s when I realised sport lives in me and I’ll also look at making it my career. Q: Tell us about how you began to support Kaizer Chiefs? Was it something you inherited from your father or was it a decision of your own? A: I wouldn’t say I inherited it from my dad. It was easy to
choose Kaizer Chiefs because they were winning trophies and a big team. And, I was told about their rich history which made it easier for me to support them. Q: You recently graduated with a sports management qualification, what are your plans with that? A: Well, one day I hope to be the first African FIFA President. I want to change sport and end corruption. But with my short term goal, I want to engage with sport development in our country and ensure South African sport is at the highest level and that we have more Gold Medals during Olympics as well. We need to take sport very seriously in our

country as we have massive potential. So I’d want to ensure there’s lots of investment coming in to sport. Q: What are some of the fondest/craziest football memories you have from attending games with your dad? A: It was during the 2010 World Cup. Attending the opening match was something I’ll never forget. In fact I’d cherish it for the rest of my life. Meeting different people from different countries gave me an idea that sport is big and can unite people. Q: Kaizer Chiefs have been struggling to win trophies in recent years. What do you think is the problem at Naturena and how can they fix it? A: We all know the biggest problem is the management at Kaizer Chiefs - the decisions they making are killing the club. They actually run a business instead of running a soccer team. Either way, with Gavin Hunt, all I’m hoping for is that he’ll be given freedom to choose his team and introduce the new game style that’s going be entertaining and help us win the trophies. And also play the payers from our development. I just want the team to return back to winning ways Q: After the heartbreaking end to last season and the current transfer ban, what are your expectations for Kaizer Chiefs this season?
SOCCERZELA.CO.ZA
A: I’m also happy that with this FIFA ban, it’ll help us in using our development players and rebuild a project that’s going last longer. I believe many of players at Kaizer Chiefs don’t deserve to play for this club. So it’s better with Gavin
ATTENDING THE OPENING MATCH WAS SOMETHING I’LL NEVER FORGET. IN FACT I’D CHERISH IT FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. Hunt building his own project with youth players that are going to last longer and learn about our history while getting rid of the deadwood. So yes, more youth and building a solid side to compete in the future.
Q: Who is your favourite South African footballer of all time and why? A: It has to be Simphiwe Tshabalala. I’ve always loved him from the day he joined Kaizer Chiefs. I’m lucky enough to have met him in person. He’s a humble guy and always smiling. His football history says a lot about him. He was so dedicated and passionate about playing Kaizer Chiefs throughout his career and that’s why he went on to achieve so much for the club. Q: Who is your favourite international footballer of all time and why? A: It has to be Lionel Messi, unbelievable player. He’s actually an alien that one, the things he does are extraordinary. He’s gifted by God. I’m also pleased I had the opportunity to see him play because our generation will speak a lot about him in future. The records he has broken are going to last for a long time to come. Q: As the famous Cellular, what advice do you have for the South African youth in general? A: To believe in yourself at all times, self confidence is key in making it in life. Always do what you love. Don’t let people’s comments downgrade you. Never judge people, focus in school and always respect elders. Use your talent to make the most out of your life. Ù

SENZO MEYIWA’S
LEGACY BY ZAAHID NANABHAY
It’s been six years since the passing of former Orlando Pirates legend and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa. And while the focus remains on justice, we often forget the legacy ‘Ndzori’ left behind. Senzo Meyiwa was murdered by unknown gunmen in October 2014 whilst visiting his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo in Vosloorus, and after six long years, some progress is being made with regards to solving the case. Police Minister Bheki Cele said the five suspects arrested in connection with the killing of Bafana Bafana Captain Senzo Meyiwa would appear in the Boksburg Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 27 October 2020. Cele and National Police Commissioner Khehla Sithole gave an update on the protracted murder case of the former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain.

NDZORI MADE HIS FIRST BREAKTHROUGH IN 2000 WHEN HE MADE HE MARK AT THE COCA-COLA UNDER U17 PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT AS A 13-YEAR-OLD.
Cele said the five arrests were made on Monday morning in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. “These arrests are a result of a multi-disciplinary integrated approach to this investigation, which is working closely with the director of public prosecutions. The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the prosecution team are confident that we have a watertight case against all five suspects.”

Despite the arrests, the public have once again been left frustrated after the suspects claimed they were being wrongfully arrested. Many believed the spectacle was just another tactic used by law enforcement to ease tensions regarding the lack of justice being served. The five men arrested in connection with Senzo Meyiwa’s murder refused to step inside the dock. They were led into the courtroom but refused to comply, arguing they did not commit the crime and police were using them to protect those actually responsible for killing Meyiwa. One of the suspects claims they were arrested back in August while another told the court they want the media present to capture what he calls the thuggery in this murder case. Accused number four claimed he didn’t see the need for a lawyer because he didn’t kill the former Bafana captain. The suspects have been named as Muzikawukhulelwa S’themba Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Ziphozonke Maphosa, Sifokuhle Nkani Ntuli. It remains to be seen whether justice will actually be served. However, in all of the frustration, we have undoubtedly forgotten the legacy of Senzo Meyiwa. It was in 2012 when Senzo Meyiwa’s patience paid off after wholeheartedly grabbing the number one position at Orlando Pirates following an injury to Josephs. Meyiwa made a total of six appearances for Bafana Bafana in which he kept five clean sheets while conceding just one goal.
