HAJJ MESSAGE Dear respected Brothers and Sisters, My sincere greetings to Muslims during this month of Dhul Hijjah. Hajj is a unique and spiritual gathering of Muslims from around the world. It is an invitation from Your Lord to visit His house and have an opportunity to be granted forgiveness in the most blessed of places. No other assembly compares to this monumental occasion which will see millions of people, men and women, from different ages, cultural backgrounds, and

nationalities altogether in a breathtaking distinctive sight. Undoubtedly Hajj is a beautiful journey but this journey is also a struggle in many ways. It requires ones to implement lessons in physical sacrifice, patience, and most importantly, complete submission to the One Above. Prior to undertaking any journey one needs to make preparations to make the most of the experience and to equip oneself with the best strategies to deal with any challenges that may arise. Â In the spirit of the Hajj season, Islam Channel will have a number of Hajj programmes that have been carefully selected with our viewers in mind. Our team has worked tirelessly to bring you a variety of uplifting, heart rendering and educational programmes. Of course our unique and much loved daily live coverage of Hajj from Makkah and Medina will be at the heart of our programming.

Hajj will signify the end of one year and the start of another year. Islam Channel will be starting the new Islamic year with a renewed commitment to provide our viewers with meaningful discourse concerning all aspects of Islam and a true quality media alternative. My prayers are with those that are undertaking this spiritual journey of a lifetime. May Allah make it easy for you and accept your Hajj. For those of us who are not performing Hajj, there are still abundant ways to make the most of this blessed time and inshallah we will have the opportunity in the coming years. Praise be to Allah, we thank Him, seek His Help and His forgiveness. Ameen.

A JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME

Hajj is one of the 5 pillars of Islam which every Muslim male and female must undertake, provided they are physically able and can afford it.

6

The word Hajj in Arabic means destination or purpose. It is one of the most important, and for many, the most life-changing journey that they undertake, the concluding destination being the House of Allah. The pilgrimage takes place from the 8th to 12th day of Dhul Hijjah. Hajj consists of several acts of worship to Allah which will be explored in this article. This year will see over 2 million pilgrims from over 180 nationalities arriving in Saudi Arabia. Prior to entering the sacred city of Makkah pilgrims put on the Ihram and make their intention. This is the first pillar of Hajj. The literal meaning of Ihram is to make haraam (forbidden) signifying the sacredness and respect of Hajj and the House of Allah. Visually and psychologically it creates a huge impact seeing Muslims of all different ages and backgrounds standing together in white, equal and united for the same purpose heading towards one destination. The Hajj starts with pilgrims performing Tawaf which consists of circumbulating around the Kabah seven times counter-clockwise. This should be performed in one go. Each Tawaf

is completed when you return back to the Black Stone and perform the Istilam, which is the touching or pointing to the Stone. At the end of performing Tawaf, a pilgrim prays two rak’ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim (the standing place of Ibrahim). During the period of Hajj when the Haram is packed, it is permissible to pray these two ra’kahs in any place of the Haram. After Tawaf, the pilgrims perform sa`ee (meaning to strive), which consists of running or walking seven times between the mountains Safa and Marwah as was carried out by Hajrah the wife of Ibrahim (alayhis salam) whilst searching for water for her son Ismael. The pilgrims then make their way to Arafat standing together near the Mount of Mercy asking Allah for His forgiveness and making dua. This is also the place that the Last Sermon of our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (sallahu alayhi wa salam) took place. Muslims in other parts of the world fast on this day thus joining them in spirit. The Prophet Muhammad (sallahu alayhi wa salam) said: “Fasting the day of `Arafah expiates the sins of two years: the past one and the coming

one. And fasting the day of Ashura expiates the sins of the past year.” [Muslim] The pilgrimage ends with Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice). Many pilgrims sacrifice either a goat or sheet as a symbolic act of Ibrahim’s willingness to part with his son for the sake of Allah. And what is the end reward for those that have gone through this beautiful journey? Well, that can be seen from this hadith:

“Alternate between Hajj and ‘Umrah (regularly), for these two remove poverty and sins just as the blacksmith’s bellows removes all impurities from metals like iron, gold and silver. The reward for Hajj Mabrur is nothing short of Paradise.” (Nasa’i and Tirmidhi) May Allah bless your Hajj and accept all your good deeds. May He make your journey easy for you and allow you to come back safely. Ameen

FAREWELL SERMON On the 9th of Dhul al Hijah the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings be upon him) from Mount Arafat spoke some of the most important words in what came to be known as his Farwell Sermon. Here are some of the messages conveyed to us: 10

Rights of women “Treat the women kindly, since they are your helpers and not in a position to manage their affairs themselves. Fear Allah concerning women, for verily you have taken them on the security of Allah and have made their persons lawful unto you by words of Allah.”

Equality “Oh People! Allah says, Oh people We created you from one male and one female and made you into tribes and nations, so as to be known to one another. Verily in the sight of Allah, the most honoured amongst you is the one who is most God-fearing. There is no superiority for an Arab over a non-Arab and for a non-Arab over an Arab, nor for the white over the black nor for the black over the white except in God-consciousness.”

Social Justice “Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your lord, and that he will indeed reckon your deeds.”

Brotherhood “Oh People! Every Muslim is the brother of every other Muslim, and all the Muslims form one brotherhood. And your slaves; see that you feed them with such food as you eat yourselves, and clothe them with the clothes that you yourselves wear.”

This amazing sight at Hajj and brotherhood that exists has been described eloquently by Al-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X) in a letter: “Never have I witnessed such sincere hospitality and overwhelming spirit of true brotherhood as is practiced by people of all colors and races here in this ancient Holy Land, the home of Abraham, Muhammad and all the other Prophets of the Holy Scriptures. For the past week, I have been utterly speechless and spellbound by the graciousness I see displayed all around me by people of all colors. …There were tens of thousands of pilgrims, from all over the world. They were of all colors, from blue-eyed blondes to black-skinned Africans. But we were all participating in the same ritual, displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood”

“Labbaik! Allahumma Labbaik! Labbaika Laa shareeka Lak, Inna lHamda wan na’imata lakaa wal mulk, laa shareeka lak” “Here I am at Thy service, here I am, Oh’ Lord, here I am to declare that there is no partner with Thee. All praise and blessings belong to Thee and all sovereignty is Thine. I am here at Thy service, and Thou hast no partner, Oh’ Allah.”

H HEALT TY E & SAF NG DURI Planning on going to Hajj in the future? HAJJ

Here are some tips to help you prepare:

Hajj is a physically and emotionally challenging experience. Health and safety is vital for every pilgrim. In order to prepare for Hajj it is important that a pilgrim is physically and mentally fit for the journey and takes safety precautions to successfully complete the trip. 12

• Make sure you take vaccinations against meningitis. There are millions of pilgrims from all around the world and the risk of illness and disease exposure is high. The government of Saudi Arabia does provide free medical health service to pilgrims. • Pilgrims will be performing the same rituals during the same time, thus to avoid accidents be patient, walk calmly and don’t push. You will be doing a lot of waiting. This is from the moment you arrive at the airport, to going in and out the Haram to queues in places like the rest rooms. • Saudi officials have warned pilgrims to keep valuables safe as pick pockets are a key problem. Keep belongings and relevant documents with you at all times. • Travel with a reputable ATOL registered tour operator. Get recommendations from others. This can really make a big difference to your experience. • Ensure you have products such as Vaseline, sunscreen, insect repellent, foot cream and paracetomol. All these items are available in Makkah but with the sheer amount of people it will be more time efficient to have bought them ahead of time. • Protect yourself from the sun. Keep a hat and a pair of sunglasses with and wear lightweight cotton clothing (when not in Ihram). Apply sunscreen on a regular basis. Drink lots of water and juice to keep your hydrated. • Buy a prepaid SIM card. This can cost as little as £5 but will allow you to contact those in your group in case you get lost. Ensure your phone is unlocked phone and you have the correct adapters.

The Global Peace & Unity Festival has had the auspicious privilege of hosting and exhibiting the Kaa’ba Kiswa for the past four events mash’Allah. This has been extremely popular and warmly received by the thousands of attendees at the festival. The GPU has also

hosted the Imams of Masjid Al Haram & Masjid un Nabi. These grand gestures have become an important element of the GPU. Given its credible reputation and extensive reach The GPU is the ideal host for the Kaa’ba Kiswa and Islamic Exhibition

• The Kiswah is embroidered in gold thread with the Shahadah and various verses from the Quran. • It is over 45 feet wide and nearly 130 in length. • It costs approximately £9,000,000 to make. Since 1927 it has been made in a factory located in Makkah. • At the end of Hajj, each year on 9th Dhul Hijjah the new Kaa’ba Kiswah is placed over the Kaa’ba whilst all the pilgrims are at Mount Arafat. • The old Kaa’ba Kiswah cloth is cut into small pieces and distributed.

N QUR’AITH & HADTES QUO UT ABO J HAJ Surah Baqarah

And when We made the House a pilgrimage for men and a (place of) security, and: Appoint for yourselves a place of prayer on the standingplace of Ibrahim. And We enjoined Ibrahim and Ismail saying: Purify My House for those who visit (it) and those who abide (in it) for devotion and those who bow down (and) those who prostrate themselves.

“There is no day on which Allah frees more slaves from the Fire than the Day of ‘Arafat.” (Muslim) Surah Al Maeda

Allah has made the Kabah, the Sacred House, a source of security and Hajj and Umrah (pilgrimage) for mankind, and also the Sacred Month and the animals of offerings and the garlanded (people or animals, etc. marked with the garlands on their necks made from the outer part of the stem of the Makkah trees for their security), that you may know that Allah has knowledge of all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, and that Allah is the All-Knower of each and everything.

(3:97)

Surah Al Imran

“Hajj to the House is a duty owed to Allah by all mankind – those who can find a way to do it. But if anyone rejects, Allah is Rich beyond need of any being.”

(3:97)

Abu Hurayra said that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was asked, “What action is the best?” He replied, “Belief in Allah and His Messenger.” He was asked, “Then what?” and replied, “Jihad in the way of Allah.” He was asked, “And then what?” He replied, “An accepted hajj.” (Bukhari)

(2:125)

Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “From one ‘umra to the next is expiation for everything in between them and there is no reward for an accepted hajj other than the Garden.” (Bukhari)

Muslim Charity This Eid Al-Adha: Fulfil a Religious Obligation & Gain Rewards Muslim Charity’s Qurbani 2012 programme envisions to instil hope and happiness to our needy brothers and sisters around the world.Fresh and readily available meat and food packages are a luxury for many people around the world, with this in mind our Qurbani campaign works in two folds: firstly to provide essential food packages and Qurbani meat to the most impoverished families and vulnerable communities and secondly to raise awareness of the plight of the needy across the world. In 2011 over 310,000 people benefited through Muslim Charity’s global Qurbaniprogramme. This year entrust your Qurbani/Udhiyya with Muslim Charity and aid the needy people of Asia, Africa& Middle East. Muslim Charity will perform a sacrifice in your name or on behalf of another, and you can be assured it will be Shariah compliant with our local offices and partners who carefully identify communities to ensure your help reaches those in most need.

Islamic Relief Last year with your love and support, over 3.2 million people from 27 different countries received fresh and quality Qurbani meat from Islamic Relief. We make sure the most impoverished people receive the best Qurbani we can provide them. We select only the healthiest animals, ensuring high quality meat for those whose diets lack so much. As well as delivering in towns and cities, we also provide Qurbani in remote, rural areas that some charities find hard to reach, where communities hardly ever receive support. It may cost us a little more, but we hope you’ll agree that it’s the poorest people who need our help most. We try to help the most vulnerable people first – women, children, the elderly, and refugees of war and disaster are always our priority.
