These are prolific and persistent – do not engage with them and don’t agree to take any insurance. These insurances generally aren’t worth the paper they’re written on and once you have signed up they will keep ringing. These cover items such as white goods, tv’s, Sky and drainage and all operate in the same way. We recently heard of a victim who had over 40 direct debits on his account to these insurances! • We have been contacted by a resident who had a couple of men at his door this week asking to buy his motor home – which they said they believed was for sale. These weren’t islanders and were travelling around in a white pick up. Their approach would be to try to negotiate a silly price or pay a deposit and drive the motor home away and you would never see it or the money again. DO NOT engage with anyone on the doorstep.

Tramp in the Woods Living on an island we are spoiled for choice with local wildlife, and nothing beats the sighting of a red squirrel and it’s thanks to local photographer Tramp Woods that I can have the pleasure of sharing this one on the front cover. Dave Krowson AKA The Tramp (Tramp Woods) moved to the island after a sudden change in his life and after spending many hours sitting in the woods waiting for the opportunity to capture these beauties his friend nicknamed him Tramp in the Woods. The name stuck and has now been adapted into an online trademark through Instagram and Facebook. Tramps favourite subject is the red squirrel and over the past 2 years he has been photographing all species of wildlife and is in the process of finishing his book, ‘Life Thru the Lens’, which will showcase an array of pictures taken by himself and he hopes that the book will be enjoyed by all ages and may encourage others to get involved with our wildlife in whatever form they feel.

News Report from Cllr Joe Robertson - Bembridge joe.robertson@iow.gov.uk
It has been a year since I was elected as Isle of Wight Councillor for Bembridge and during that time planning and flooding have been the most frequently raised issues. Planning issues have generally been divided into three: the application for holiday lodges in woodland along Love Lane and the planning appeal, objections to the planning application for 57 homes on the field between Steyne Road and Hillway Road, and the draft Island Planning Strategy which was consulted on last summer with the second draft still pending. At the time of writing the Planning Inspectorate have given me no indication when they will make a decision for the woodland off Love Lane. In the meantime, there has been lots of activity in the woods including ground clearance, tree works and the erection of unsightly fencing. I have raised the issue with the Council’s tree officer who is monitoring the site.
administration pulled the draft and cancelled the meetings at the last minute. This gives us another opportunity to seek changes to the housing allocation for Bembridge which is still too high and argue why the settlement boundary should not be arbitrarily extended to include the two fields at the Sandown Road end of Steyne Road. I am in further discussions with Cabinet Member for Planning, Cllr Paul Fuller, and he understands that the Council needs to listen more to communities. We are also expecting the Government to make an announcement in relation to planning over the summer. I do not currently know when a new draft IPS will be returned to Cabinet and a Full Council meeting however it seems unlikely it will be before June.
In terms of flooding, I have been shown a draft of the section 19 Flood Report carried out on behalf of the Council. The report recognises the impact of the flood events The application on land between Steyne last summer in Bembridge in particular. Interesting Facts and Historical Events for May The name May is the modern-day English adaption of the Latin word Maius, which has origins going back to the time of the ancient Greeks. They named the month of May (or Maius) after the Greek goddess of growth. May used to have a very different name in Old English. Back then, the month was referred to as the “month of three milkings.” Unsurprisingly, this meant that during this month, you could milk your cows up to three times per day! May was once considered an incredibly ill-omened time to get married. There’s an adage for it actually, which goes: “Marry in May and you’ll rue the day.” It’s not clear where exactly the saying comes from, but there must have been a pretty good reason not to get married in one of the most beautiful months of the year! May isn’t just a bad time to get married, though. There’s one superstition that says that buying a new broom in May is unlucky. Oh, and apparently, you shouldn’t wash any blankets either! May is a pretty good month for US presidents. Every other month of the year, at least one US president has died, but never in May! May is the month that the Eurovision song contest is held every year and has been held every year since 1956 (with the exception of 2020). May is a special time for Star Wars fans worldwide. May the 4th is celebrated as Star Wars day, due to the way the date sounds similar to “May the Force be with you”. The Empire State Building formally opened its doors on May 1, 1931. At the point of its construction, it held the record for being the tallest building in the world. Many other sky-high constructions have since dwarfed it. Back in the day, it wasn’t a good May if you didn’t celebrate it with a maypole. In the UK, they were present since at least 1350 AD. Celebrants would erect a long pole and attach flowers, garlands, and strips of fabric to it, around which certain dances would take place. The birthstone for May is the emerald symbolising fertility and rebirth and May has two birth flowers – the Lily-of-the-Valley and the Hawthorn. The Hawthorn flower is a symbol of hope, while the Lily-of-the-Valley represents the return of happiness and sweetness. May also has two Zodiac signs, Taurus and Gemini. People born under the sign of Taurus are said to be ambitious and smart, yet trustworthy. Those born under the sign of Gemini are said to be passionate, adaptable, and smart. Many famous people were born in May, such as Queen Victoria, and Catherine the Great, Mark Zuckerberg, Karl Marx, Clint Eastwood, Wes Anderson and John F. Kennedy, 8

News Report from Jonathan Bacon - IW Councillor for Brading & St Helens. Tel 07973 872150 | Email: jonathan.bacon@iow.gov.uk sthelenscouncillor@gmail.com Cllr Jonathan Bacon I am sitting down to write this during the Easter weekend. In addition to enjoying the weather it’s also one of those times when you enjoy catching up with some of things that normal hectic working days forbid. For me this will mean a bit of time with my vinyl record collection. As with many others this enjoyed renewed interest during lockdown, and I have been able to fill some of those long standing gaps and enjoy what was always the best way to listen to recorded music afresh. The collection does go off into some odd byways, including a near complete collection of BBC Sound Effects Records. These became of interest due to the cover art and also school memories of using cassette copies of Volume 16 ‘Disasters’ and Volume 21 ‘More Death and Horror’ to interesting effect in school French classes in the late nineteen seventies. However, looking at the discs again I have been struck by how much of our heritage they contain On the Isle of Wight Council, in addition to overseeing the areas of Environment and Waste, my responsibilities also cover Heritage, and this is the area that has been filling much of my time recently. I have been considering how we can best support our heritage generally and do so to the benefit of our tourist industry, but also looking at the importance of recognising how our heritage and culture adds value to our understanding of where we live. As such it is important to recognise the breadth of what ‘Heritage’ can and should mean. So, it is important to keep records and awareness of our past for much wider reasons than just the fact that someone might pay to see them.

In recent weeks this has struck me during two visits to the recently formally opened Aviation Museum at Sandown Airport and the amazing exhibition at Brading Town Hall which shows how life in the Town operated over many hundreds of years. So looking at my old Sound Effects Records, amongst sounds such as ‘Eerie wind, Gunshot and Creaking Door,) I find tracks such as Lancaster Bomber taking Off (Volume 8, side 2), Inter City 125 Train (Volume 25, side 1), Milk Float (Volume 6, side 2), Water Mill (Volume 15, side 1), Talking weighing machine (Volume 18, side 1), Trimphone ringing ((Volume 9. Side 2) and Hand Lawn Mower (Volume 2, side 1)! We need to preserve these sounds and memories just as much as Dinosaur bones or Victorian paintings as they both inform and educate us as well as supporting and enhancing the memories of our lives that are important to our daily wellbeing. This is something I have seen particularly with the power of music when working with Dementia patients and was also illustrated by the valuable support the Aviation Museum gives to veterans. We have so much Heritage and Culture on the Island that the value it can have to us is greater than that in many other places around the Country. I hope that, as part of my work going forward, this value, in the many hues set out above, will be developed and supported more and more over the years. And if anyone has a copy of BBC Sound Effects Volume 14, I would be very interested. It’s the only gap in the collection now!
