• We have received a report from a resident who received a call from a funeral plan company offering to carry out her funeral much cheaper than her existing plan. She engaged with them initially but then realised that they might not be genuine and on speaking to a local funeral directors she realised that the offer they were making was unrealistic and it was probably an attempt to get her details – a phishing scam. When checking the number they called from online she realised that there were a lot of negative reports about them so instructed her bank not to allow payments to be taken. • We would like to make you aware of a new service recently launched. The scheme is urging people to “stop, hang up and call 159” to check that calls purporting to be from your bank are for real. The idea is to help those who believe they have been contacted by scammers claiming to be their bank, or by fraudsters who encourage them to transfer money. According to Stop Scams UK, criminal gangs stole over £470 million from individuals and small businesses last year by pretending to be a bank or other service provider, encouraging consumers to falsely make a payment or transfer money. When calling 159, you’ll be taken through an option menu in which each bank that has signed up to the service is read aloud. Customers are then able to use their telephone keypad to be put through to their bank. You’ll then be directed through to your bank’s customer service department. Note that calling the service will cost the same as making a national rate call, which means if you’ve got inclusive minutes it’ll be taken from those. For those who bank with firms not yet involved in the 159 pilot – you should continue to contact your bank by using the number on the back of your debit or credit card. Remember Scam emails can be forwarded to report@phishing.gov.uk and scam texts to 7726

ith the clocks going back an hour and the night’s drawing in there is no doubt that Autumn is here. For me I try to keep as busy as I would in the Spring and Summer months and if our unpredictable British weather allows, I will continue being outdoors as much as I can, just this time I will be kitted out in a hat, scarf, and gloves. Even a gentle stroll to a local beauty spot with a flask of warming soup (see our recipe on page 12) will do you good. It is important that we look after our mental health as well as our physical health. Around this time of year, I try my hand at a new hobby to keep me busy. The list of crafty and non-crafty hobbies is extensive, and I am hoping to jump on the macrame trend and fill my home with macrame plant hangers. For those of a certain age, you will remember when this was a popular craft first time around and you may even have a plant hanger, wall hanging or even a lampshade from back then!!! Inside this issue you will find news from local councillors, information, editorial, puzzles and adverts from a fantastic range of advertisers offering a variety of services. As always, please use their services and support these local businesses. Our ‘Dates for your Dairy’ section lists a variety of events happening both in your local area and across the island and there should be something for everyone to enjoy. I hope you all have a fantastic November, stay safe and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

News Report from Cllr Joe Robertson - Bembridge joe.robertson@iow.gov.uk
The last month has been dominated by continuing discussion about the draft Island Plan Strategy, flooding and drainage.
The opportunity for submitting responses to the draft Island Plan Strategy closed on 1 October. Over 1,000 submissions were made across the Island, and I expect that a large number of those came from Bembridge residents. Bob Seely MP attended a meeting at the Village Hall the week before the close of submissions. The meeting was attended by five Isle of Wight Councillors (including myself), Parish Councillors, representatives from Build a Better Bembridge Ltd and over 150 residents. I am grateful to the MP for his energy and enthusiasm on the topic of local planning and for making time to visit Bembridge. There were some excellent points raised by residents both generally and specifically relating to the fields adjacent to Mill Road and Steyne Road which are earmarked for inclusion into the settlement boundary and 180 new homes. I would like to thank all those who attended and the Parish Council for hosting. I have raised strong objections to the planned development figures for the Village. Specifically, I have raised the issue of fairness and equity to the Planning Officers. Bembridge has an overall figure of 193 new homes in the draft strategy, Brading and St Helens have none, Seaview and Nettlestone have 17, Wootton has 10 and the whole of Sandown, Lake, Shanklin and Ventnor combined have 253. Any objective analysis should show this is not a reasonable spread of Island allocation. 4
Due to the impact of flooding over the summer and widespread issues of drainage, the Isle of Wight Council as the Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA) is undertaking a formal flood investigation. To assist with gathering evidence as part of the investigation, Island residents affected by the flooding during July and August 2021 are encouraged to fill in the flood investigation form at Flood Risk and Watercourse Consents - Service Details on the Council website: iow.gov.uk. Any relevant supporting evidence (e.g. photographs, records of emergency service attendance, insurance claims) can be sent to flood.evidence@iow.gov.uk. The information supplied will help the Council to understand how the flooding has impacted our local community, and to consider potential options to mitigate the risk of similar flooding in the future. I am encouraging as many residents as possible to complete the form and email evidence to the Council. We need to ensure that Bembridge is uppermost in our minds when it comes to reducing the risk of flooding in the future. I have been aware for some time that there is an increasing tendency for overnight camping on Bembridge point close to the gravel extraction. Some vehicles appear to have become somewhat rooted, and residents are understandably concerned about nuisance and hygiene. I have raised this matter with the Harbour Authority who are already taking action including putting notices on vehicles. continued over the page
News Report from Cllr Joe Robertson In addition to responding to local concerns I continue my work as a member of the Council’s Corporate Scrutiny Committee and Adult Social Care and Public Health Policy and Scrutiny Committee. I would like to acknowledge the Isle of Wight NHS Trust recent CQC report where it was rated as “Good” and has now been taken out of special measures. While the drive for further improvement continues this is a very important achievement and owes much to the hard work of all the staff.

News Report from Jonathan Bacon - IW Councillor for Brading & St Helens. Tel 07973 872150 | Email: jonathan.bacon@iow.gov.uk sthelenscouncillor@gmail.com Cllr Jonathan Bacon Last month I reported on the Alliance Council developing its policies towards our UNESCO Biosphere status and Climate Change as part of the aim to protect and support our precious environment.
As such the Plan is an example of how people can work together to generate a detailed plan of aims and aspirations when they have the unified aim of supporting the interests of the Island, its residents and businesses.
The Climate Change Strategy and support for the Biosphere are two of the key policies in the Council’s newly published Corporate Plan. The Plan was agreed by the Council’s Cabinet on 14th of October, and which will be considered by the Full Council meeting in November.
In all of this the Alliance will adhere to its core values of focussing on our local communities, encouraging working together, being effective and being efficient.
The Plan sets a new direction for the Council, aiming to get away from the process of managing decline by the ongoing process of cuts that seems to have been the approach now for far too long. In addition to the approach to the Biosphere and Climate Change, the plan sets out two other key areas of action reflecting the key issues faced by the Island at the moment, namely the need for mental, physical and economic recovery after the pandemic and the need to deal with the housing crisis we find ourselves and, in particular, the need to secure affordable properties for our residents to rent or purchase to live in. The plan has been created as a result of collaboration and discussion amongst members of the Alliance who have brought together the ideas, suggestions and proposals which were discussed, before and since the elections, with residents who wanted to see something new from the Council they elected in May. 8
However, the aims set out in the Plan mean nothing without action. You can have the best Plan in the world but without taking positive steps to put it into effect it will mean nothing. The Alliance have therefore further pledged to turn the Plan into positive action for our residents and businesses. You can view the Plan on the Isle of Wight Council website. If you want to discuss the Plan with me or discuss any other matters of concern, please contact me using the details above or you can speak to me at one of my regular surgeries, the next few of which take place as follows: Brading Community Centre, 16th November and 14th December, both at 10am St Helens Pavilion 2nd November and 30th November, both at 10am

The recipe below for butternut squash soup also uses coconut milk which adds a mild, creamy flavour and takes it from good to fabulous. November Facts November actually translates into “ninth month” in Latin. It was the ninth month of the year before January and February were added to the Roman Calendar. Despite its change to 11th position, November was never renamed. November begins on the same day of the week as March every year and also February except in leap years. November is the only month used to represent a letter in the phonetic alphabet. November 1st is National Cook for Your Pets Day. (I don’t think I need to add anything more to this) The fifth of November marks the day in 1605, a group of Roman Catholics plotted to blow up Parliament while King James I was inside. Fortunately, the plot was foiled. The Anglo-Saxons had quite the fitting name for November. It’s usually at this time of the year in the northern hemisphere that cold winds start to chill you to the bone, and as such, they called it “Wind Monath”, or wind month. The November birth flower is the chrysanthemum. One of the world’s most popular cut flowers because of its variety. Available in a huge spectrum of colours these flowers are thought to bring good luck and joy into any home Those born in November can be born under one of two very different star signs. If you’re born before November 23rd then you have the sign of Scorpio. Those born on November 23rd or later have the sign of Sagittarius. Scorpios are said to value trust and honesty above other things, as well as being quite intense yet imaginative people. Those born under the sign of Sagittarius are quite different, being energetic and idealistic, while also generous and open-minded. According to research published in 2008, serial killers are more likely to be born in November than any other month. Happy Birthday to all those celebrating this month.
