What is an Alzheimer Café? An Alzheimer Café is a meeting place that provides informal education and information about the issues surrounding dementia. Alzheimer Cafés welcome everyone who has an interest in dementia; people with dementia, their families and friends and people in the community, who would like to learn more about dementia. Alzheimer Cafés provide an informal, safe, and sensitive environment for, sharing feelings, giving, and receiving support and guidance, and provides the opportunity to make new friends with people in similar situations. Alzheimer Cafés have a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Each month there is a speaker who presents information on a dementia related subject, sometimes from another service, and welcomes professionals and visitors’ who provide updates and information on their areas of expertise. The Alzheimer Café Team will give you a warm welcome, ‘a listening ear’, provide refreshments and signpost people to other services and agencies, where appropriate, to access information and services. There is no need to book to attend an Alzheimer Café, you are welcome to come along to any of the Cafés across the Island (ACE7 is for people with Young Onset Dementia aged 45-65 years). There is no charge to attend an Alzheimer Café – but we welcome donations in the orange collection boxes. (Booking is only necessary when Covid-19 restrictions apply.) Welcome to the August issue and there is no denying that summer is here! Whilst writing this we are in the middle of an amber weather warning for the extreme high temperatures the island is experiencing... like many others I am finding it quite unbearable, but it could be worse - we could be in a built-up city, hours away from the beach and ocean.

I’ve been seeking shelter and enjoying picnics under the trees in many of the parks we have on the Island. Isn’t it amazing what we have on our doorsteps? This month is set to be a great month on the Island, as after being absent for a couple of years due to the pandemic we can finally say that August is once again Carnival time... Our dates for your diary section on pages 8 and 9 is a handy guide to know what’s on and when, ensuring you don’t miss any of the fun or if carnivals just aren’t your thing, you’ll know which areas to avoid and when!!!

This month’s issue is once again packed with news, information, local advertising, puzzles and much more. I need to stop looking at this month’s front cover as the temptation to get up and leave the office in search of a 99 with an extra flake is very strong. I have certainly eaten more than my fair share of ice cream during this hot spell, but I believe that by eating them I am supporting local businesses... well that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. Please keep using the services of local advertisers who advertise with us, and I hope you all have a lovely August, and, on that note, I am off to get an ice cream! See you again next month.

PILATES IS FOR EVERYONE AND EVERYONE IS WELCOME! By Dawn Middleton St Mary’s Church, Church Rd, Cowes Starting a new activity/joining a new club Mon: 10am & 5.30pm (improvers/intermediate) can be very daunting for a lot of people. One 11am (beginners/improvers) of my clients was telling me the other day Wed: 5.45pm (beginners/improvers) of how anxious she felt about coming to the Fri: 10am (improvers/intermediate) first class and how pleased she is that she 11am (beginners/improvers) took the plunge. I know it can take a lot of Northwood Village Hall, 364 Newport Rd, Cowes courage, but if you fancy trying something Wed: 11am (mixed abilities) new (whether it’s Pilates or another activity) For info and to book call 07539 544865 try pushing any anxiety you may have to the email: dawn.e.middleton@gmail.com side and give it a go. If you find it’s not for dawn.pilates.iow you, you have lost nothing but hopefully will feel stronger for having tried and encouraged to pursue another activity. All my clients are completely different in their ages, shapes, sizes and abilities but the one thing they all share is that they are friendly and welcoming.
Pilates has many health benefits including improved flexibility, muscle strength and tone, posture and spine stabilisation, joint strength and mobility. It strengthens all the major muscle groups in a balanced fashion and focuses on your ‘centre’ breath, hence why it’s great for stress management. I am a Level 3 Mat Pilates instructor and hold certificates in Pilates with Small Equipment, Pilates for Common Orthopaedic Problems and Pre and Post Natal Exercise. I am registered with CIMSPA, fully insured, DBS checked and have completed a Covid Awareness course. My super friendly classes are run in Cowes at St Marys Church and at Northwood Village Hall I also offer private 1:1 or 2:1 tuition in your own home should you feel you aren’t quite ready to join a group yet. So, if you fancy a try, come along and join us, you can call me on 07539 544865 or send me an email for more info/to book and see my main advert for class/contact details.

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - for Cowes West & Gurnard Tel: 01983 289595/07935 090835 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Surgeries - I am working throughout August. Admittedly this means catching up on those few annoying items that have not often concluded to the satisfaction myself and local residents hope for. Limited surgeries continue (see my website for details) and whilst I pick up texts and emails, a response may take longer due to others taking annual leave Planning Decisions. • Sunnycott Caravan Park, Rew Street. (Ref: 22/00726/FUL) Proposals to increase the number of mobile holiday homes at Sunnycott was refused by officers. • The Dottens, Baring Road. (APP/2114/W/21/3277258) The decision to increase dwellings at the Dottens was refused by the Planning Inspectorate. • Six dwellings adjacent to Greenacres, Baring Road. (APP/P2114/ W/21/3278577) The application to refuse in March 2021 has been overturned and approved by the Planning Inspectorate. The Planning Inspector noted because the IW Council ‘cannot demonstrate a 5 year housing supply’, whilst ‘its plan for housing delivery is out of date’ and by the suggestion within 2012’s Island Plan that this site lies ‘immediately adjacent to the settlement boundary’ the proposal was approved. This reflects the urgent need to adopt the Draft Island Planning Strategy giving teeth to the Council to ensure that future plans reflect the right housing in the right place 6
Waste Collections Please ensure your households refuse and recycling is ready to collect by 7am. Bins can be left out from 7pm, the night before. Please note back door (or nominated location) collections are free for residents unable to leave waste/ recycling at the kerbside due to impaired mobility. For other residents, particularly those who are unable to leave out or collect bins owing to work commitments the IW Council offers a similar collection plus service. This costs £60 per year, and is available by calling 01983 823777 or emailing waste.contract@iow.gov. uk. Southern Water Meeting - I attended the recent public meeting hosted by Southern Water. At the meeting it was reported that Southern Water intended to reduce the flow to storm water drains by 80% by 2030, thus reducing outfalls. To do this, Southern Water plans to roll out water butts to households Cowes and Gurnard should be the second area to have this which is timetabled for March 2023. Cold Calling - I’ve again contacted Trading Standards following reps. from Anglian Double Glazing and the Great Ormond Street Hospital cold calling. What Trading Standards advice is key, is to ensure that residents display their No Calling Stickers. If your home is without one, please let me know or pick one up from Cowes Library. This then gives no excuse for salesmen doorstepping! Highway Mirrors - Residents regularly request mirrors to assist visibility when exiting vehicular accesses. To note, these are not
News report from Cllr Paul Fuller the responsibility of Island Roads or the Highway Authority. The reason for this is due to mirrors giving a distorted image of oncoming traffic. Where these do exist they have been placed by private landowners on private land!!
Electric Vehicle Charge Points - With escalating fuel costs I am continuing to work to identify a location for a local charge point for vehicles in and around Gurnard… Please let me know your thoughts!
Thefts and Burglaries - The police ask to avoid opportunistic burglaries that front doors and outbuildings are secured as walk-in burglaries are more common during the summer.
Second Homes - Within my Cabinet Portfolio position, I have been discussing ideas and concerns residents are having with the availability of Affordable Housing and issues regarding new second homes in the Cowes Area.
Hedgerows - Following being cut earlier this year, the Cowes Enterprise College hedge has again been requested to be made safe from low lying brambles, which obstruct Crossfield Avenue in places. The cutting back of hedgerows has also been requested for Place Road, Baring Road, Tuttons Hill, Worsley Road, Woodvale Road and Newport Road. With respect to the planting at Bucklers View, Worsley Road I am seeking a solution to deal with the overgrowth at this spot. Memorial Benches - Complaints have been received concerning the sensitive issue of flowers, keepsakes and other items left on memorial benches. Although benches can be a lovely reminder to those who pass away, please act sensitively when remembering loved ones. ‘Secret’ Beach Works - I was approached by a number of residents concerned over the movement of rocks and shingle at the secret beach between Shore Path and Marsh Road - As a result of being contacted earlier this year permission was granted for minor works on the proviso that rocks could be repositioned (with photographic evidence) to the original location prior to the spring storms. To ensure no damage was done, I’ve requested this is monitored.
Although second homes locally are significantly lower than it is in Seaview, Yarmouth and Bembridge this remains an issue, which may need addressing within updates to local neighbourhood plans. In the meantime, please let me know your thoughts. Also this month • I am still awaiting a response from the Watersedge Café, regarding issues received. • I’ve received a complaint concerning coaches parking over on Cowes Parade. In response, I am advised that coaches are free to settle down (this is necessary for their hydraulic braking systems). However, if coaches wait beyond 30 minutes they are liable for a Penalty Charge Notice. • The IW Council are supporting calls to ensure disposable barbecues are properly used and discarded sensibly. If disposable barbecues can be avoided all together this would be brilliant! If not, once cooled please ensure debris is safely disposed of. This follows incidents where discarded barbecues on beaches have caused burns when trodden on. 7

News Report from Cllr Richard Quigley - Cowes North Email: richard.quigley@iow.gov.uk Summer has begun, it’s been a good start, but evidence is suggesting people are watching the pennies. Fingers crossed the abundance of open shops and general good state of Cowes leads to a good Summer Sub-standard rental properties continue to be an issue. With the support of Cllr Peacey-Wilcox and Cllr Stephens, we have a plan to start the private tenant’s forum. We are also looking at ways of counteracting the negative aspect Airbnb has had on availability and rental prices. However, this requires government action. I have met with Red Funnel again, whilst they are aware of the issues around the planned timetable, they are still being caught out by high levels of staff absence (Covid related) and they are struggling to recruit. I continue to push them to add more crossings. The Island plan, which will set out the framework for development of housing on the Island over the next 15 years. Without an approved plan, the Island is at the mercy of government targets for housing and can’t set their own. It leaves us in the hands of developers. So hopefully it will be approved before too long. And again, I have had too many residents approach me with concerns over “heating or eating”. I have qualified as a citizen’s advice first aider and urge us all to point people in their direction. www. citizensadviceiw.org.uk 08001448848 With the good weather, more visitors come to our lovely town. Which seems to mean
more overflowing litter bins. The quickest way to get this actioned is via the Island roads website www.islandroads.com and click on the report it online button. The same goes for any other issues to see around the town. Residents of Castle road continue (quite rightly) to highlight the state of the land on Market Hill and the proposed development for the land. The land is still unkempt, and the proposed building might raise a few eyebrows.

August Facts and Historial Events On the 6th August 1762, the first-ever sandwich was created. It was named after the Earl of Sandwich when he requested a dish involving meat between two pieces of bread. As the story goes, he requested it as he was in the middle of a gambling game and didn’t want to interrupt it.
different though, as it is a sign of imagination, eternal sleep, and oblivion!
August was a big month for the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. It was on the 28th August 1963, that Martin Luther King Jr gave his famous “I have a dream” speech to 250,000 people on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. Considered to be one of the most iconic speeches in the history of the US, King’s speech called for the end of racial discrimination and for equal rights to all.
