Firstly, I must apologise to everyone who does the puzzles. Unfortunately we had a gremlin in our system last month and there were three All day Breakfast - Steakfast - Jacket Pots words missing from the wordsearch. We did Sandwiches - Burgers & family favourites not realise this had happened until they had drinks & mouthwatering desserts been delivered. I hope it didn’t cause you too much confusion and be rest assured we have 72 High Street, Cowes www.eegons.co.uk triple checked this months... Weather wise November hasn’t been that good. It’s been very wet and the temperature is starting to drop. All I seem to keep hearing is that we are going to be getting the worse winter in years, with months of snow and arctic temperatures. Personally I don’t think it will get that bad, although I am hopeful for a bit of snow but not on Christmas day as this will stop people getting to their families at this special time of the year. There is plenty happening across the Island in December and you will find details of these events on the ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 14 and 15. You will also find the regular news reports from our Councillors who do a fantastic job of keeping us up to date each month. Finally I would like to wish every person that reads this, all advertisers and contributors a very Merry Christmas and I look forward to catching up with you all in 2016. Best wishes Debbie

Sharing the News by Jane Goddard of Community Spirited With all the negative press that the care sector has been through lately it is so lovely to be able to share, GOOD, positive news from a business dedicated to East Cowes and Cowes and surrounding areas. Every day we make a difference to our clients by going the extra mile for them. We love what we do and we have staff and clients who have been with us from the very beginning. Its been an amazing year and Community Spirited were CQC inspected on the 8th September 2015 and the report has been published. So much hard work and dedication by the whole team has paid off. Our clients, their families and our staff gave fabulous feedback to the inspector and this is reflected in our report which shows us as good in all areas with an overall summary of GOOD. You can view the full report by going to the main CQC website. In addition to the above we are really pleased that a 2 year long dream has finally come true. Community Spirited is creating a community hub at the former Pavilion site on Victoria Recreation Ground, East Cowes. We want the community to come together to help in any way they can, from as little as donating a tin of beans so we can offer families who are struggling a basic meal once in a while. We are also building up a volunteer base where we will need people to work in the café preparing and serving food, making tea, fund raisers and people to clean and generally look out for one another. We are going to put on activities as well as running the café. We want to engage with young people and help them by delivering mock interviews and general guidance on what we, as a business, like to see from people. We welcome volunteers from 16 years upwards; this will be valuable work experience to put on their CV for those who are looking for employment. All DBS checks will be made through Community Action who is based at the Riverside Centre in Newport.
Community Spirited Giving the warmth and care of a family, with the trust and support of a friend... We live and work here in East Cowes. We offer a range of care services to support people in their own homes. We are CQC registered and can provide all aspects of personal care, from 1 hour visits to a sit in service, sleep ins, wakeful nights and live in care. We offer a comprehensive home help and support service including our handyman service for small to medium jobs and we also provide 1 to 1 activity sessions to people who are living with dementia, at home and in care homes.

News Report from Independent Isle of Wight Cllr Paul Fuller - 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Island Roads Ward Walk - Last month I undertook a ward walk with Richard the District Steward and Principle Officers from Island Roads and the IW Council. Streets visited, and outcomes were as follows: • Baring Road, Highway safety issues. Revised consideration of a parking order and options. • Parklands Avenue, Resurfacing. I have fingers crossed this could be reprioritised following survey. • Ward Avenue. Resurfacing. Following being resurfaced in 2014, this continues to be monitored. • Mornington Road. This ‘protruding’ junction was investigated. Options are under consideration. • Shore Road, Resurfacing. This has been given very high priority, following survey. Following this, I hope to reconvene a follow up to investigate the wellbeing of the Church Road pot hole, ponding beside the Worsley Road post box and issues concerning pinch point bollards in Baring Road. Cowes Post Office - This is due to be reopened on Tuesday 1st December at Cowes Yacht Haven. Access will be from Town Quay, where the Post Office will be located opposite Cowes Harbour Commission. Many thanks to Cllr Mark McNeill for his perseverance, M&S for their patience and those involved in relocating this facility. Beach Huts - At Ryde, Councillors and Beach Hut owners are suggesting altering the colour for Beach Huts. In Gurnard, I’ve not received similar requests from Beach Hut owners, however, I am interested to know owners and resident’s views.
extend their lease with the IW Council. For the club this became important, following an opportunity to create revenue from the installation of Solar Panels on the Club’s roof. Following success, now all is required is the sunshine! Dottens Farm Update - Planning Officers are considering feedback on the planning application for land adjacent to Dottens Farm, Woodvale Road, Gurnard. Because this land is owned by a County Councillor, this will be determined by Planning Committee in 2016. As always, I will ensure residents are kept updated. Gurnard Marsh - Work is due to commence on the repair/ restoration of sea defences on the seaward side of Marsh Road. At a site meeting I attended with the Council’s Coastal Protection Engineer, consent has been sought to raise the seawall, reducing flood risk to properties and businesses in the area. It is anticipated work can begin before Christmas. Area Action Plans: Public Consultation The IW Council are currently consulting on its Area Action Plans, which offers an opportunity to provide feedback on proposals within the Island’s key regeneration areas of the Medina Valley, Ryde and the Bay. These proposals can be found at: www.iwight.com/aap , at receptions of the Seaclose offices and County Hall, and at libraries within the action plan areas. The consultation continues until Monday 21st December. Garden Bonfires - Bonfires continue to cause distress to residents in Gurnard, and those living in the Baring Road ‘bowl’ where the smoke lingers. Please follow the Bonfire code by:
Isle of Wight Community Club - I’ve been supporting the Community Club to renew and • Only burning dry material
News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued • Avoid burning household rubbish, rubber tyres or items containing plastic, foam or paint. • Avoid lighting fires on damp, still days. • Ensure neighbours washing, open windows and roads are kept clear of smoke. • Avoiding burning when pollution levels are high or very high. • Keeping bonfires away from fences, trees, hedgerows and buildings. • Never use oil, petrol or methylated spirits to light a fire. • Never leave a fire unattended, or leave it to smoulder

NORTHWOOD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS By Chris Riddet VILLAGE IMPROVEMENTS - The bench on the Venner play park, which had been donated many years ago by Roger Mazillius, was in need of urgent repair. Cllr Pullen advised he had made inquiries and to remove it would cost £30, or £150 to effect it’s repair. The IW Council had subsequently suggested that they were looking into the matter and if viable would undertake the repairs, or if not, take it away. They promised to keep the clerk informed.
JOINT MEETING ISLAND ROADS - A copy of the notes of the joint meeting held last month had been circulated prior to the meeting. A series of questions had been raised by councillors and sent in advance to Island Roads. Some of them were answered at the meeting and the remainder would be responded to by email. The main criticism made at the meeting was the perceived lack of communication from Island Roads. Richard Baker, the District Steward for the Cowes wider area received praise for his assistance with local problems. Fracking Five blocks of the Isle of Wight could soon be awarded licences for exploration and development of oil and gas extraction by conventional or unconventional methods such as fracking. Hydraulic fracturing or ‘fracking’ is a controversial technology used for extracting oil or gas resources which are otherwise trapped in shale rocks and similar deposits.
Only a proportion of the fracking fluid returns to the surface as ‘flowback’, typically 20-40%. No one can be really sure where the other 6080% ends up. The fluid that does return to the surface contains varying quantities of radioactive materials carried from deep underground.

Head Teacher Mrs Silliito said: “Customers at Sainsbury’s Newport & West Cowes have been really supportive this year and it’s great to be a top collecting organisation. The scheme has helped us teach the benefits of a healthier more active lifestyle to hundreds of children over the last few years and we’re really looking forward to getting to use the new equipment as part of our PE curriculum and competitive sport programme”. Over 43,000 schools, clubs and groups are signed up to benefit from Sainsbury’s Active Kids. This year alone, the scheme has delivered over £11 million worth of equipment and experiences to schools, clubs and organisations.

Isle of Wight Night Shelter Being homeless and having nowhere to go must be one of the hardest challenges to face and many people believe that there isn’t really a problem on the Island and granted its not as bad as some of the big towns on the Mainland but the Isle of Wight does have a small group of 100 – 150 homeless. The advantage to this number is between us all we should be able to help these people, because they are people just like us. They range from 18 years old through to 74 years and with winter fast approaching the worst time for being homeless is drawing closer. There is a Homeless Shelter on the Island at Downside School, Pan Estate, Newport. This shelter is open from the 1st December until the 31st March and is open from 7pm until 8am, 7 days a week. Anyone arriving at the shelter will be given a hot meal, shower, bed for the night and washing facilities for their clothes and some clean ones if needed and they will also be given breakfast. Last year they had over 65 people coming through their doors from all different walks of life. We can all help and do our bit, whether its donating warm jumpers, jeans, warm coats, clothes, toiletries, and new underwear and 20
socks which can be handed to people using the shelter. Or perhaps you are able to volunteer one night a week and even stay over as more volunteers are desperately needed, especially men. Donations can be dropped off at Downside Community Centre, Pan Estate, Newport between 8am and 4pm Monday to Friday. The shelter is run by Andy and Ruth Davis and a team of volunteers on behalf of the Isle of Wight Council and has been open for 4 years but unfortunately this is the last year it will be operating as the Council have plans to turn it back into a school. This is devastating news for the team and also for the homeless people and Andy and Ruth are looking to the future and want to be able to buy their own building to be able to fully support this project. Obviously as you can imagine money is a major issue so if anybody would like to give a money donation to help move this project forward, it will be greatly received as they would like to plan to be open all year round and not just the winter. If you can help in any way at all then please either drop off donations or you can contact Andy on 07811 003361 or email him on andy@iwnightshelter.org
