ABUSE Doesn’t Always Leave Bruises and Broken Bones: The Inner Damage Can Be Much Worse ABUSE can be psychological, controlling, sexual, physical, emotional, digital or financial. ABUSE is control, blatant disrespect and hurtful words. ABUSE can come from any type of relationship - siblings, parents, children, friends, work colleagues, work management. Break the Cycle CIC was founded by Maggie Currie in 2016 and her ‘Mind the Gap’ courses have been written specifically to help people who have or are suffering abuse in any form. Maggie has experience of working with people from all walks of life and the results from her courses have been truly remarkable.

ALL ‘MIND THE GAP’ COURSES ARE FREE. The 12-week courses are for men and women, and they will teach you how to rebuild your confidence and move forward positively in your life, on your terms. The sessions help build support networks, learn new skills and increase self-belief.

It is NOT okay • To be humiliated in public • For you to be forced to do something you do not agree with • To be told you are ugly or unattractive • To be forced to choose between your friends or partner/wife/husband • To be controlled • To be made to feel guilty for somebody else’s anger. It is their issue and not your fault.

The next ‘Mind the Gap’ course for women will begin on Monday 10th January 2022 and the ‘Mind the Gap’ course for men will begin on Wednesday 12th January 2022. Both courses are being held at the Newport Methodist Church, Quay Street, Newport from 10am – 12pm To book your place on this course please email hello@breakthecycle.org.uk

elcome and can you believe this is the December issue and Christmas is very nearly upon us.

I can feel the excitement in the air in the build up to the big day and our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section is brimming with events happening both locally and across the island. There is a Christmas Fayre or event for everyone, whether you’re a Christmas fanatic or best friends with the Grinch! Although we still have a long road ahead of us regarding Covid, at least we are in a better place than we were this time last year and we can get to spend time with family and friends over the festive period. December is the start of winter and I remember back when we had that week-long heat wave in summer, I was wishing for the colder weather... as they say, be careful what you wish for!! With the weather set to turn cold please remember to check on others, especially if you have elderly neighbours or anyone on their own. Winter is a lonely time for many and just 30 minutes of company can be the difference between a good day and a bad day. On another note... who spotted the typo in last month’s sudoku puzzle? Thanks to Nathan for letting me know and my apologies to everyone for this oversight and I hope it didn’t puzzle you too much. Traditional Painter & Decorator

SIMON MAC

I hope you all have a great December and I wish you A Very Merry Christmas and I look “a professional, reliable & high quality tradesman” forward to catching up with you again in the Specialist in painting/staining kitchen doors, New Year.

News Report from Cllr Richard Quigley - Cowes North Email: richard.quigley@iow.gov.uk As this is my first entry for Island Magazines, behaviour to the Police, so I’d like to thank all of you that turned out to that it is recorded and dealt with. The council have agreed to increase vote back in May. Change can happen. patrols to the reservoir and get it cleaned up. It is a privilege to represent Cowes North, Housing - The Island was recently identified but despite the Town having nearly all its shops full and a busy summer season, we still as the worst county in the country for share many of the problems of other Island availability of housing (rented and to buy). The problems are many and have communities. caused huge amounts of stress for families that can’t find suitable and affordable Parking - I have been contacted by several residents regarding the problems around on accommodation. My priority is to work with the administration to find short-term road parking and permits. I have received and long-term solutions to the issue. Rents some very good ideas for solutions, which have been passed onto the council for review. need to be based on average incomes and not average prices as we lag behind the rest Cllr Jordan is due to set up a parking task of the country on income, but not on rental group to look at the issue across the Island. prices. We also need to build truly affordable (there are 4500 council car parking spaces housing, for rent and purchase. This should across the Island, which doesn’t sound include “Council built and owned homes”. enough). There isn’t going to be a quick fix, but it is E Scooters - Cllr Fuller has been the recipient my priority to get a solution underway. of the updates regarding the trial of Beryl Community wealth building - I am leading scooters, many concerns have been around underage users and two on a scooter. Both of a project on Community Wealth Building, employed by councils across the country those activities are illegal, in fact underage users fall into the category of “taking without to great effect (especially Preston Council). The simple explanation is spending more of users consent”. I look forward to further the Island Council‘s money on the Island, findings from Cllr Fuller. so that it isn’t “extracted” by organisations not based here. In brief, it means more Road signage in Cowes High St - I’m sure, secure and better paid jobs as the Council in a parallel universe, there is a clear code and other similar institutions won’t relocate of sensible road signage. The issue with to elsewhere in the country and part of the times vehicles are allowed to travel through purchasing rules mean organisations pay at the High Street (that includes bikes) has least the “real living wage” as opposed to the been raised with Island roads, as have the minimum wage. This won’t be a quick fix as dismount signs and the confusing signage opposite M&S. I might be wrong, but I think we have years of “old fashioned” methods and procedures to undo, but we will do it. this could take some time to rectify. Please feel free to contact me on the email Moorgreen Road reservoir - Reports of antisocial behaviour and litter have been reported above or stop me in town as I can be found walking my dogs most days. to the council. News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - for Cowes West & Gurnard Tel: 01983 289595/07935 090835 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Toilets - I continue to receive feedback from Southern Water who request that residents please not dispose of fats, wet wipes, rags, sanitary equipment, etc. in toilets. According to Southern Water, Gurnard is one of the worst areas in the region for this, and although repairs have taken place over recent months the issue with blockages continues. Please note the depositing of ‘non-toilet’ items not only applies to residential toilets, but also to outside drains and gullies where some residents have been spotted disposing of paint, fats and household waste. Planning Applications • The Dottens. This application has been refused. • Cockleton Lane (Ref: 21/01747/ FUL). Proposed 6 dwellings. This application has been called into the Planning Committee for consideration, should officers be mindful of approving this application. • Place Road: 14 dwellings, Former Poultry Farm, Land adj. 77 Place Road. Ref: 20/02229/OUT. I have raised concerns over proposals for the former Poultry Farm in Place Road where I’ve expressed concerns over the lack of affordable homes and coalescence. • 5G Transmitter, Baring Road. I have relayed residents concerns with this application. 6

The Jordan Grille, Shore Road The ongoing saga to contend with the removal of the grille continued to cause an issue for me. Following the support of the EA the Isle of Wight Council removed the grille before winter storms set in. Immunisations - Last month these were proving difficult as demand overwhelmed supply for Flu Jabs. For details of pharmacies visit: www.iow.nhs.uk/contactus/useful-numbers-and-addresses/isle-ofwight-pharmacies.htm Details regarding covid boosters can be found at: www.nhs.uk/covid-booster Drones - I continue to receive calls concerning use of drones, please note the following rules apply to their use: • Your drone must weigh under 20kg • You can’t fly above 400 feet in altitude or 500 metres from you horizontally • Ensure your drone is always in sight • Always keep away from aircraft, helicopters, airports and airfields • Use your common sense and fly your aircraft safely • Any drone weighing more than 250 grams must be registered with the CAA and the drone pilot must complete an online safety test, obtaining a Flyer ID and an Operator ID that should be attached to the Drone. • You must not fly within 50 metres of people, vehicles, buildings or vessels • Your drone must not be flown within 150 metres of a congested area or any large group of people such as a concert

News report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued or sporting event as you may be prosecuted • If you intend to record in an area where people are, you must inform them before you start, as you will need to respect privacy, or risk being prosecuted • If you intend to use the drone for commercial purposes you must have permission from the CAA and comply with additional laws governing their use. To get guidance on operating permissions for drones see the CAA’s website for the latest information and regulations regarding drone use. Crossfield Estate - I continue to receive feedback concerning boundary hedges being punched through to increase access to roads on the Crossfield Estate. In King James Close (where access have been created to both Westwood Close and Winston Close), I have requested these gaps are blocked as when the roads were created it was made clear that no right of way was wanted or required. A Few December Facts... December used to be the tenth month of the Roman year, and it gets its name from the word ‘decem’, which means ten. December originally had just 30 days according to the ancient Roman calendar. When the calendar was changed for the Julian calendar, December gained a day, making it the seventh and last month in the year with 31 days. In the northern hemisphere winter begins on either December 1st (if you follow the meteorological seasons), or after the winter solstice on the 20th or 21st of December (if you follow the astronomical seasons). There are fewer daylight hours in December in the northern hemisphere than in any other month. More than 80,000 people a year are rushed to hospital due to festive falls, Christmas crashes and decoration disasters! About 1,000 people a year are hurt by decorations alone, so be careful with the tinsel this year. The tradition of putting tangerines in stockings comes from the 12th-century French nuns who left socks full of fruit, nuts and tangerines at the houses of the poor. December 12th is Poinsettia Day. December’s flower is the narcissus or holly. December’s birthstones are turquoise, lapis lazuli, zircon, topaz (blue), or tanzanite. December 28th is considered by some to be the unluckiest day of the year. An ancient legend states that forest animals can speak in human language on Christmas Eve. However, it is bad luck to test this superstition. In 1647 Oliver Cromwell, English Puritan leader, banned the festivities of Christmas for being seen as immoral on such a holy day. Anyone who was seen celebrating was arrested! The ban was lifted in 1660. Father Christmas is a magical man of mystery, delivering presents to all the children in the world in just a single night! Researchers have found that his super sleigh would need to travel at 650 miles per second, and stop off at 822 homes every second, in order to successfully deliver every single present! No wonder he needs a whole year to recuperate! 8

What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox REMEMBRANCE PARADES: What an honour to attend a number of events this year. The Carisbrooke Castle Field of Remembrance, such a beautiful setting, calm and quite poignant. Lovely to see so many schools coming along too. The Medina Marching Bands Festival of Remembrance in aid of the British Legion on Friday 12th. WOW. What a superb event. Incredible, diverse music, the bagpipes were amazing, the singer, the band, just first class. The Minster service on Sunday was extremely moving - to see so many of us Islanders coming together after so long…many there who were mourning the family and friends we have lost not just during war time, but during this pandemic. My heart was with each and every one of you. It also brought home how much I care for you all and the responsibility of my job.

HIGHWAY/ROAD ISSUES: On the same issue, I know many of you have frustrations over areas regarding our roads. Currently due to some severe illnesses the highways department are really limited. Please bear with us, while we try and do all we can.

DEBT/FUEL COSTS: As we know, all costs are rising. PLEASE do not bury your head. PLEASE reach out to our amazing team at Citizens Advice on the Island. They can help you so much! Call: 0800 144 8848 or 01983 823898 or online: www.islehelp.me or www.citizensadviceiw.org.uk

GRANT APPLICATIONS: I often get sent details of grants available to groups and organisations. Please let me know if you would like me to forward them onto your group.

ABANDONED CARS: Over the years I have been contacted by many of you over this issue. I always try to chase on your behalf - we eventually have them removed. We have little, and in some cases no parking on our streets. To have these vehicles just causes animosity in the areas. Please be mindful and do all you can to think of others. 12

TOLERANCE: I find most people to be good, kind, patient, tolerant. The pandemic has made people think and act differently now. Many more people are choosing to have a different work life balance; meaning businesses are really struggling and I mean, REALLY struggling to keep up. Please try to bear this in mind with daily frustrations. Everyone has a ‘real life’ behind the job they do too…!!

UNWANTED GIFTS: Don’t throw them away! A large number of charities would be pleased to receive them. Watch this space for further details. CHRISTMAS AND FOOD WASTE: Watching David Attenborough, the other day he said, “we need to produce affordable food without expanding the use of land and forests any further. This is very possible. The BIGGEST Problem is WASTE. 40% of food that is currently produced is thrown away. 40%!!! Not in my house. Whatever
