Your Local Community Magazine
Dear Readers Welcome to the February issue. Island Magazines is your local community magazine and each issue is packed with news, information, features, dates for your diary, puzzles and much more. It is also an ideal way to find local services offered by local businesses. From dentists, chiropractors, health & fitness, property maintenance, warehouse discount stores, life coaching, through to electricians and solicitors - this little magazine has them all. Valentine’s Day is on the 14th February. It’s a time to be romantic and show your loved one just how much they mean to you. Even if you are single you don’t need to miss out, instead treat yourself to something special. Later in the month on Tuesday 28th February it’s pancake day and who doesn’t like a nice stack of pancakes on a cold, wintry day. I know I certainly do!!! If you have any news or events you want to share then please get in contact with me and I will do my best to help. I hope you enjoy this issue and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

News Report from Independent Isle of Wight Cllr Paul Fuller - 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com The Range - Work stalled at the new Range store, due to outstanding Planning Enforcement matters concerning a bund to the west of the site. These matters have now been resolved. Winter Gritting - Gritting routes for Cowes West & Gurnard are: Place Road, Tuttons Hill, Worsley Road, Shore Road, Woodvale Road, Baring Road, Ward Avenue, Park Road & Crossfield Avenue. If these roads are missed in freezing conditions, please let me know. For details visit: www.islandroads.com/27winter-service-.html Scam Calls - A resident contacted me regarding a call received, advising them that their Credit Card has been compromised. Should any person call you concerning this, repayment of tax broken computer, say nothing. If something sounds too good to be true, then that is probably because it is!
Cowes Bank Closures - I am still awaiting a response from both the HSBC and Lloyds concerning the imminent closure of the two last banks in Cowes. On this matter, with representatives from Cowes, Gurnard and Northwood local councils, we met with the Member of Parliament who has been supportive. Following the meeting, I am investigating opportunities for combining post office and banking facilities. I consider that there must be opportunities given Cowes’ size and need for such a facility to serve our town’s 15,000 residents, its businesses and visitors. Traffic Obstructions - I received a complaint concerning Church Road, Gurnard being completely obstructed due an abundance of vehicles attending events on Christmas Eve. Please note if there are no double yellow lines and your vehicle obstructs traffic movements vehicles can still be ticketed!
Details of scams can be found at: www.iwight. Isle of Wight Council Budget - The IW Council com/azservices/documents/2562-Scamsneeds to find £7.5m worth of savings and June-14.pdf this month, Councillors will make some very Gurnard Neighbourhood Plan Consultation - difficult decisions on where these can be found, or opportunities where the Council This important consultation for the future can work more efficiently. Proposed savings of Gurnard is due to take place until 27th (and alternatives) will be available for the Full February. For further details, please visit: Council meeting to be held on 22nd February. www.iwight.com/consultations. In the meantime, if you have queries, questions or suggestions, please let me know! Anti-Social litter - Fly tipping, Overflowing litter bins and dog bins has been reported and action taken during a busy December. If you see dog mess which requires clearance or enforcement, please let me know. Island Roads can also be contacted on 01983 822440 (24 hrs) and often (from experience) areas can be cleansed within hours of being reported. 4
Cowes Floating Bridge - The new Floating Bridge is due to come into service at the end of March. In the meantime, like many other residents, I continue to keep my fingers crossed that emergency utility works are kept to a minimum on the main CowesNewport road. Updates can be found on www. iwfloatingbridge.co.uk
News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller Rew Street - I’m in dialogue with Island Roads concerning the non-reinstatement of road markings following Rew Street being resurfaced last year. I’ve been advised that ‘industry standards’ does not require markings are reinstated, however I am challenging this given the record of historic traffic incidents which have occurred. Churchill Road - I am supporting residents who have been approached by a developer in this road on the Crossfield Estate. Blocked Drains - Sewage leaks occurred in Shore Road over the Christmas Holidays, following blockages occurring. Following Southern Water being asked to intervene, I was told that this was as a consequence of residents not disposing of oil properly... Coring of Highways - Surveying ‘soon to be resurfaced’ roads has taken place. Residents from Pine Tree have asked me to follow up whether works were imminent… Unfortunately, I’m told deterioration does not warrant commencement before October 2018. Because of this I will continue to ask that this road is monitored.
In my new role, I will take over the position as the IW Councillor to oversee Public Protection. This includes Trading Standards, Environmental Health, Bereavement Services, Food Safety, Emergency Planning, Licensing, Fire and Public Safety and liaison with the Emergency Services

If you’ve never given blood before you’ll probably wonder what the Blood Donation Sessions are and what happens there. They can take place at regular intervals at your local community centre, church, or sports club. Giving blood saves lives. The blood you give is a lifeline in an emergency and for people who need long-term treatments. Many people would not be alive today if donors had not generously given their blood. We need over 6,000 blood donations every day to treat patients in need across England. Which is why there’s always a need for people to give blood. Each year we need approximately 200,000 new donors, as some donors can no longer give blood. Most people between the ages of 17-65 are able to give blood. Around half our current donors are over 45. That’s why we need more young people (over the age of 17) to start giving blood, so we can make sure we have enough blood in the future. You can book an appointment to attend or register to be a donor online at www.blood. co.uk or by calling their Helpline on 0300 123 23 23. 14

Och Aye The Moo I hope you like this month’s front cover photo of the Highland cows which was taken by David Trevan. Highland cattle with their long horns and their flowing coats, which gives them protection during cold winters, were originally from the Highlands and West Isles of Scotland and are now a welcome sight across the Island. David Trevan is a very keen amateur photographer who lives on the Undercliff and comes across these beautiful animals on his regular walks around St Lawrence. David has a passion for natural history and particularly wild flowers and before he retired he was a lecturer in Horticulture and Countryside Management at the IOW College and trained at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew with Alan Titchmarsh.
He is a keen member of the IOW Natural History and Archaeological Society and puts many of his wildlife pictures online, in particular iSpot, an Open University website and iRecord, a website that enables people to record their natural history finds. A big thank you to David for allowing Island Magazines to share his photo which I am sure you will agree is stunning and has captured the beauty of these beasts. I hope we will be able to showcase more of David’s work in the future.
