Resolutions…. It’s that time of the year again, when we say goodbye to one year and welcome in another. It’s traditional to make yearly resolutions, which normally get broken before the last of the Turkey is used up and bubble and squeak is on the menu for the fourth day running. We can thank the Babylonians for this tradition as it is believed they were the first to make New Year’s resolutions and the early Christians believed the first day of the new year should be spent reflecting on past mistakes and resolving to improve oneself in the new year. My resolutions are pretty much the same year after year and the reason being is because I break them year after year. They are standard resolutions and include at least four maybe five from the list of top ten resolutions, which are lose weight, eat more healthily, exercise more, be more patient, stick to a budget, stop smoking, save money, get more organised, find a better job and to just be a better person over all. It’s good to know I am not alone in my thinking and planning and failing!!!!! Traditions go back a long way and each country has its different beliefs – take Italy for example… apparently Italians wear red underwear on New Year’s Day to bring good luck all year long. I do hope they wear clothes on top otherwise that will certainly be a sight for sore eyes. Back in ancient times it was believed that noisemaking and fireworks on New Year’s eve were thought to dispel evil spirits and bring 10
good luck for the forthcoming year. I’m not convinced with this but one tradition that really makes my mind boggle is that in some countries it’s good luck to eat foods like black eyed peas, ham and cabbage because it is thought they bring prosperity. If you want to have a Happy New Year, don’t eat lobster or chicken. Lobsters can move backward and chickens can scratch in reverse, so it is thought these foods could bring a reversal of fortune. Just to be safe I think I might just have a sandwich for lunch on New Year’s Day now. If you want a good New Year tip then I suggest you make sure your car is securely locked as statistics from the National Insurance Crime Bureau revealed that more vehicles are stolen on New Year’s Day than any other holiday. Does anybody know why this would be because I certainly can’t understand it? Another tradition in Colombia, Cuba and Puerto Rico is that some families stuff a large doll, which is called Mr. Old Year, with memories from the past year. They also dress him in clothes from the outgoing year. At midnight, he is set ablaze, thus burning away the bad memories. I would imagine this could be quite satisfying and a cleansing routine, to forget the past and move on to a bright future. Now where did I put that doll which I can dress in that ghastly knitted jumper I got for Christmas… Whatever your traditions are I hope you have fun doing them and good luck with your resolutions I hope you at least last until the end of January and I wish you all a Happy and Peaceful New Year.
