News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Parking School drop off and collection time Parking continues to be an issue. Parking Officers were asked to undertake patrols last term. On most occasions, this would not be necessary if motorists parked sensibly in the first instance. In the meantime, I do ask for drivers to please refrain from blocking driveways and parking on lines. Gurnard Parish Council still require councillors!! If you live locally, and care about how the village evolves in the coming few years, please contact Sue Waters at gurnardparishcouncil@gmail.com. From feedback I receive, I know there is considerable interest when things go wrong. What remains important is for our Parish Councillors to work together to maintain and improve all that is good with village life! Parklands Avenue. Beset with problems since a petition was first submitted in 2007, Parklands Avenue has eventually been reconstructed, and reopened before December. In the conversations that I had with most residents, this came as no surprise. Thank you to every resident for their patience! Planning Applications. Many thanks to residents who approached me regarding the planning application to upgrade the Watersedge CafĂŠ in Gurnard. Planning Officers are currently assessing comments raised. Bonfires and Fireworks. If you plan on having either, please, please, please let your neighbours know. If you must have a bonfire, please check for hedgehogs first! Full Council. At Full Council I supported proposals potentially giving the Isle of Wight
dark sky status. I was also one of only 9 Councillors supporting plans to ensure all IW Councillors are DBS (police) checked. As a corporate parent and as a Councillor regularly coming into contact with vulnerable residents, I considered this an essential tool to ensure residents are able to trust their elected representative. Please let me know your thoughts on this! School Holiday Consultation. The IW Council want to know residents views on school time holidays. Suggestions look at the possibility of reducing the length of the summer holiday, and extending half term holidays in February and October. For details please visit: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ school_holidays. This consultation continues until 12th January. Seafront Railing Repairs. Railings between Cowes and Gurnard seafront are being made safe. Because of the cost and limited funds these repairs are taking place on those sections most needy. Please note, where metalwork has been replaced with rope, this is only as a temporary measure! Dog Poo. Please report incidents to Island Roads by calling 01983 822440 (24-hour helpline) or email info@islandroads.com. If there is a persistent problem please let me know, so that I can and will chase this up with the Samantha the local Environment Officer. Blackberry Lane. I’m advised that the pavements edge WILL be painted, for safety reasons. I have also requested lighting is improved, given the large numbers of pedestrians using this lane.
News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued Trinity Landing. A maintenance agreement is in place with the Royal London Yacht Club to ensure the public landing is kept clean and maintained. In light of this, I’ve requested signage advising the public of the contact point within the RLYC should they wish to use this public landing stage. English Coastal Path Update. I joined ramblers and landowners when attending a drop-in held to discuss proposals for the English Coastal Path. For Gurnard, I have suggested my preference for seeing the path following fewer roads and being closer to the shore. Cowes Central Post Office. I am supporting an application made by Dave Parkman from the new Central Convenience Store in the High Street, to provide a post office counter in his premises. Public Toilets. Repairs have again been necessary following mindless damage to the toilets in Cowes. I’m advised by officers in Newport, discussions continue to resolve
January 27th 2018
drainage and other problems at toilets in Church Litten. In the meantime, facilities are available for children, the elderly and disabled at the library. Mobility Access. A meeting took place between the three local councils, which was followed up by a site meeting in Gurnard to seek opportunities to improve access for the disabled in the village. Options included improving parking, access to Gurnard Green and the gradient of bus stops. Regeneration. I have attended a number of meetings that are focused on regenerating the Island’s economy. One issue that I have added is the desire to treat Cowes alongside East Cowes when considering opportunities. If you are interested in becoming involved in discussions, please let me know! New Bins! are on order for the footway linking Terminus Road with Cross Street in Cowes.
EMBRACE is the story of wife and mother Taryn Brumfitts journey from body loather to body lover as she embarks on an crusade to change the way we think and feel about our bodies. Take a trip down Memory Lane with Age UK Isle of Wight For many of us, the New Year is a time to look back, reflect on the year that has just passed, reminisce on the highs and the lows of the past 12 months, and to look to the future. However, for some, this can present more of a challenge, in particular, those with memory loss or dementia. Dementia is a progressive disorder affecting how the brain works, particularly the ability to remember, think and reason. Symptoms can include • Memory loss • Struggling to follow • ‘Fuzzy’ thoughts conversations • Disorientation • Mood / personality changes Being forgetful doesn’t necessarily point to dementia. As we get older, many of us experience the above symptoms, the causes of which can include stress, thyroid problems or vitamin deficiencies. If problems like these start to affect your daily life, or someone that you care about, make an appointment to discuss them with a GP. Age UK Isle of Wight have been supporting local, older people on the island since 1973; they run weekly Community Memory Groups around the island, with the aim of bringing together and supporting those with memory loss or dementia. Groups run at: • Brading (Wednesdays) • Freshwater (Thursdays)
• Lake (Tuesdays) • Newport (Mondays)
• Cowes (Mondays) • Ryde (Thursdays)
Groups are welcoming and friendly, and offer cognitive stimulation through a range of reminiscence and social activities, discussions and games, and, importantly, they also provide respite for a carer or loved one. What Community Memory Group members say about their groups – “Very stimulating, the groups really make us think” “A nice, friendly group, plus we get tea and biscuits!” “We all get on well and learn new things, the activities really help you try to remember, and some things really do stick” Age UK Isle of Wight’s Community Memory Groups run between 10am- 3pm, with half day options available. Costs are: full day £25.50 / half day £14.00. Lunch can be provided for £5, or members are welcome to take their own packed lunch. To learn more about Age UK Isle of Wight’s Community Memory Groups, contact Age UK Isle of Wight via the following methods: Tel: 01983 525282 | E: activity.groups@ageukiw.org.uk | W: www.ageuk.org.uk/isleofwight

Be Free of Pain and Anxiety
There is nothing worse than suffering from a constant nagging pain. The anxiety and stress associated with constant pain could be making the situation worse. If you are taking pain killers to cope with normal day to day living then it’s time to stop and think about a natural pain relief. Kim Aminu is the owner of Island Pain Relief and specialises in Physiokey and Alpha Stim Therapy. Both of these therapies can play a key part in living your life pain free. They have no side effects and make excellent alternatives to pain medication. They stimulate the body’s own natural pain relieving mechanisms and kick start the body into self-healing. Physiokey can be used to treat many injuries, all body pains, headaches/ migraines, fibromyalgia, arthritis, tennis/ golfers elbow and many more painful conditions. Alpha Stim can also be used for pain but is very effective with anxiety, depression and insomnia. Neither of these treatments are intrusive and could be the turning point in your life to be able to start living pain and anxiety free. Island Pain Relief operates from Cowes Chiropractic Clinic at their new central location of 24 Birmingham Road, Cowes.
