Dear Readers Welcome and thank you for picking up a copy of the July issue. June has been a varied month weather wise and the floating bridge or Floaty McFloat Farce as it is now affectionately called is certainly causing problems, many of which are still ongoing - lets hope they get sorted soon!! The IOW Festival has been and gone and the Island is now heading towards carnival season. Many of the towns have their own carnival and you can find a list of them all on page 18. You will also find the ever popular ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 16 and 17. In this issue we have articles from Mr Wally AWOL and Friends and a news update from the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital as well as news reports, business editorials and much more. We have some great advertisers offering many different services, please keep using them and help to support local businesses and please remember to tell them you saw them advertised here. I hope you all have a great July and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - 74 Wyatts Lane, Cowes, PO31 8QA. Telephone: 01983 289595 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com New Surgery! From this month I will be dropping in to the Age Friendly Island coffee mornings at All Saints Church in Gurnard. These events occur from 10:15 on the fourth Thursday of each month. Land Adjacent to Dottens Farm: Planning Application Approved. The Planning Application to build 8 dwellings adjacent to Dottens Farm was approved by the IW Council’s Planning Committee. Myself, Sue Waters (Gurnard Parish Council clerk) and two residents spoke in opposition to the proposal. Material reasons against this application included: Impact upon coalescence between Gurnard and Cowes; Impact on the heritage and environmental setting of Dotten’s Farm; Highway concerns; concerns over proposal being outside the settlement boundary; the lack of mix of housing and affordability. Cash Machines in Cowes. Access to cash in Cowes continues to be a problem for shoppers in town. In recent weeks, regular updates have been circulated to businesses to ensure residents are kept up to date with where money can be accessed. These are also available on my website. In the short term, the ATM at the former NatWest has been relocated, whilst Sainsbury’s have provided a new instore cash machine until the second hole in the wall becomes operational in late July. In the longer term new cash machines 4

are being planned for Lancaster’s Estate Agents, Chiverton’s Newsagents and a new Central Convenience Store. New responsibilities. Last month I was thrilled to bits and feel very honoured to be elected as Mayor of Cowes! Thank you for the support and well-wishes… A very busy year beckons!! At Full Council, I was re-elected to Chair the Isle of Wight Council’s Scrutiny Committee. The purpose of the Scrutiny Committee is to Challenge, Support and act as a Critical Friend to the local authority. It was agreed that the Committee continues to act politically disproportionately. This ensures that opposition members hold the majority of seats allocated, which is considered good practice. Coastal Path. Concerns have been raised to me by landowners regarding cycles and motorbikes using the public footpath between Gurnard and Thorness. Please note on public footpaths cycles and motorbikes are prohibited. In addition, landowners advise that churning up of the footpath can shorten the life of paths which may lead to land stability issues Please note these footpaths remain open with the support of landowners! Parklands Avenue. In my most recent correspondence with Island Roads, I am advised that ‘design and survey’ work is still ongoing and because of this officers are not yet in a position to confirm treatment type for the road. Once this is confirmed, I’m advised that Island Roads will bring their Mobile Visitors Centre

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued to the road, which will allow residents to drop-in and discuss concerns and questions.

Mr Wally AWOL and Friends Mr Wally AWOL and Friends is an Isle of Wight (Cowes based) self funded voluntary organisation which rescues and rehabilitates Wild Birds. It is run by Kay Ounsworth, with help from Donna Henderson, Tracy Lane and Leah Ounsworth. Their aim is to help sick and injured birds back to peak health and get them returned back into the wild once this has been accomplished. They work closely with a fantastic team of veterinary surgeons. If you spot a sick or injured bird, the best course of action is to: 1) Secure the bird in a box with air holes. 2) Give the bird something comfy to nestle on such as tissue, kitchen roll, an old towel or something similar. 3) Place the box with the bird inside in a dark, warm, quiet place while you seek assistance. They welcome calls for advice or to arrange collection. Please call 07765564479 or 01983 247528 or message their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/wallyawol They work almost entirely by bus, so reaching more remote parts of the Island at night time is not always possible. However they are happy to arrange a more convenient meeting place, grab a taxi or advise as necessary. If you would like to help keep Wally AWOL running smoothly, Pets with Hart in Newport (opposite Hurst) happily accept donations for them and they also have an Amazon Wish List: Wally AWOL Wish List Link: www.amazon.co.uk/registry/wishlist/C0X58RG47PSS

What’s happening in our area by ‘local and vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox NEW MAYOR OF COWES: Is Cllr Paul Fuller. Well done Paul, very well deserved. OVER HANGING HEDGES/TREES: This is a particular problem this time of year. If you know you don’t have nesting birds it would be SO MUCH BETTER for our visually impaired residents to keep them in order. COUNCIL VERGES/HEDGES: Are not normally cut until August after all nesting birds have flown... SPEED WATCH PARK RD/Rashleys are: I spent a couple of hours at this busy location with fellow town councillor Paul Taylor. Despite the thundering trucks, buses, and cars, NONE were speeding; However, if I was a betting woman, I would have said they were which once again proves, PERCEPTION differs from REALITY. ARMED FORCES DAY/FLAG RAISING CEREMONIES: It was a great delight to meet up with so many people at these events. My SINCERE thanks to EVERYONE that makes the events go so smoothly. Its almost a year in the planning, so well done the British Legion and the Standard Bearers. ELECTION: Again, I spent over 10 hours at the polling station to keep in touch with my electors. I will action the points that you raised with me! IW FESTIVAL: So many of you appeared to have thoroughly enjoyed the festival. I do hope John Giddings continues to support the event in the future.

14

COMING SOON - TOURIST INFORMATION in a more central part of the town. I will keep you posted. GIFT TO NATURE SHOP: The amazing people who are doing SO MUCH to PROTECT our incredible countryside now have a shop. PLEASE go and see some of the fabulous items they have to buy, from old garden items, beautiful plants, camping/sports equipment to gorgeous cards. On Holyrood St. (Opp Hursts). tel: 641972 Open Tuesday - Saturday 10.00-4.30pm. (donations of the above items also gratefully received!) BINS ON PAVEMENTS: I again would politely request residents to move the bins from the pavements. So many of our elderly residents are struggling with limited eyesight and mums with young children being forced onto the roads. CALL CENTRE FOR COWES: It is hoped that this company is ready to employ up to 600 staff! I understand the IW College is helping with recruitment so please give them a call. I have also requested (albeit a bit early!! for the area to consider new traffic arrangements as I do not believe place road/ three gates could take much more traffic!) SAINSBURYS have requested a 2nd Cash Point. Marks and Spencer are considering a Cash Point, Aldi have a cash point, as does Co-op Mill Hill Rd. The cash point at Natwest is having a new machine installed as I speak, AND I understand that even if the building is sold, a cash point has to remain on that site!

What’s happening in our area by ‘local and vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox DOG POOH: PLEASE pick up after your dog, and PUT THE BAG IN THE BIN! Nothing is worse for our wheelchair and pram users to have this muck everywhere. AND FINALLY... I am proud to have been voted unanimously, as the CHAIRMAN of the Isle of Wight Council. Thanks to fellow Councillors for their endorsement of support. As always, you are my extra eyes and ears. Please keep in touch: lora08@sky.com or text: 07970424214

A lot has been happening at the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital since our last update. We had a record number of applications in 2016 for funds for equipment and resources from various parts of the Hospital We were able to make a large number of grants which will enhance the already excellent care and service we Islanders get from St Mary’s. The items have been ordered and are coming into use daily. Examples of what we were able to provide are monitoring equipment for community midwives, traction splints, transfer hoists for stroke patients, warming equipment for hypothermia cases dealt with by ambulances, dementia friendly crockery, and learning resources for children with special needs. We also looked after our staff with some exercise equipment and refurbishing a rest room. We have taken the opportunity to give a fresh look to our branding and have launched a new website. Check it out at www.fosmiow.co.uk. We are now communicating regularly on Facebook and gradually building up a healthy following there. It is important to let people know what we are doing for the Hospital and how they can help us to do it. Our amazing volunteers are running our friendly cafe and well stocked shop in the Hospital foyer. And we now have an outlet in the Health and Wellbeing Centre in Ryde. With the Laidlaw cafe and the daily ward trolley, that gives us five outlets to look after so if you have some time to spare to volunteer, please do contact us through the website or ring our office on 534405.

At a cost of £3,000, the Friends have provided 20 traction splints for the ambulances, to be used to relieve excruciating pain from certain leg fractures. Paramedic Mike Wigley (pictured) explained that essential pre-hospital treatment for someone suffering a mid-shaft femur fracture is to relieve the pain through a combination of pain relief and splintage.

Although legacies and donations are very important to us, our cafes and shop are our main source of income, and we do see these facilities as being a very important part of our service to the hospital. The coffee and tea is good and reasonably priced and there is a range of sandwiches and snacks. We have “Splintage is particularly important, as joined the Hospital initiative to promote less separating the fracture bone fragments sugary food and drinks and our customers are provides significant pain relief and reassurgetting used to that. Our lovely staff have a ance for the patient,” he said. “If a bone is caring attitude and always reach out to those shattered in half the leg muscles immediately in the cafe who are struggling. This is not pull the bones together, and it really hurts.” always physically, as inevitably we meet many people who have had bad news or who are worried about a loved one. We work closely with the Hospital to make sure that our funds really do make a difference to patients, staff and the Island community and we enjoy great support from the Trust, to help us to help them. So if you can help us in any way, do get in touch via the website or by ringing the number above. We would love to hear from you.
