If you are looking for a ‘handyman’ to help with those pesky jobs around the home and garden, then Simon Harrop is just the man for the job. We caught up with Simon to ask him some questions about his handyman service and to see if he is enjoying Island life. You are new to the Island, how are you finding it? I moved to the Island in March with my wife Ginny, to spend more time sailing our boat. We love living in Cowes and exploring the Island with our two dogs. I retired from my brand consultancy business but I’m not the sort to just put my feet up and tend to the roses! People are so friendly and always seem to have time to stop and chat. Being so busy with handyman work, I’m not doing much sailing after all! Why handyman work? As a property owner myself for many years, I’ve fixed all kinds of maintenance issues such as dripping taps, painting windows, unblocking drains, and clearing gardens. I’m good with my hands and wanted a change from desk work. I love getting out and meeting people. There’s real satisfaction from a job well done.

It’s a big change from consultancy!? I suppose so, but running any business is about being organised, courteous and tidy but mostly about putting customers first. I have always had a service mentality. What’s the hardest part of the job? Juggling diaries and trying to make everyone my priority. Some jobs require good weather, such as painting outside. If it rains the schedule gets messed up. I only started this work recently and already am really busy. I always try to keep people updated when doing a job. The evenings are for catching up with paperwork. For more information and for Simon’s contact details please see his main advert. 2

ith the clocks going back an hour and the night’s drawing in there is no doubt that Autumn is here. For me I try to keep as busy as I would in the Spring and Summer months and if our unpredictable British weather allows, I will continue being outdoors as much as I can, just this time I will be kitted out in a hat, scarf, and gloves. Even a gentle stroll to a local beauty spot with a flask of warming soup (see our recipe on page 14) will do you good. It is important that we look after our mental health as well as our physical health. Around this time of year, I try my hand at a new hobby to keep me busy. The list of crafty and non-crafty hobbies is extensive, and I am hoping to jump on the macrame trend and fill my home with macrame plant hangers. For those of a certain age, you will remember when this was a popular craft first time around and you may even have a plant hanger, wall hanging or even a lampshade from back then!!! Inside this issue you will find news from local councillors, information, editorial, puzzles and adverts from a fantastic range of advertisers offering a variety of services. As always, please use their services and support these local businesses. Our ‘Dates for your Dairy’ section lists a variety of events happening both in your local area and across the island and there should be something for everyone to enjoy. I hope you all have a fantastic November, stay safe and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

Not too many scams to warn you about this month although the scammers won’t have taken time off so please be really vigilant with any unsolicited communications. • We have received a report from a resident who received a call from a funeral plan company offering to carry out her funeral much cheaper than her existing plan. She engaged with them initially but then realised that they might not be genuine and on speaking to a local funeral directors she realised that the offer they were making was unrealistic and it was probably an attempt to get her details – a phishing scam. When checking the number they called from online she realised that there were a lot of negative reports about them so instructed her bank not to allow payments to be taken. • We would like to make you aware of a new service recently launched. The scheme is urging people to “stop, hang up and call 159” to check that calls purporting to be from your bank are for real. The idea is to help those who believe they have been contacted by scammers claiming to be their bank, or by fraudsters who encourage them to transfer money. According to Stop Scams UK, criminal gangs stole over £470 million from individuals and small businesses last year by pretending to be a bank or other service provider, encouraging consumers to falsely make a payment or transfer money. When calling 159, you’ll be taken through an option menu in which each bank that has signed up to the service is read aloud. Customers are then able to use their telephone keypad to be put through to their bank. You’ll then be directed through to your bank’s customer service department. Note that calling the service will cost the same as making a national rate call, which means if you’ve got inclusive minutes it’ll be taken from those. For those who bank with firms not yet involved in the 159 pilot – you should continue to contact your bank by using the number on the back of your debit or credit card. Remember Scam emails can be forwarded to report@ phishing.gov.uk and scam texts to 7726.

News Report from Cllr Paul Fuller - for Cowes West & Gurnard Tel: 01983 289595/07935 090835 - Email: paulfulleriw@gmail.com Planning • Land north of Gurnard Farm, 7 dwellings. This application was refused.
Speedwatch - A very big thank you to the volunteers involved with Speedwatch.
• Cockleton Lane, land south of Old School Meadow. 6 dwellings. Ref: 21/01747/FUL. I undertook a letter drop to 40 dwellings adjacent to this proposal to build six dwellings and create a permissive footpath link to ‘Meadow View’ in Place Road. Following feedback from residents, I have called this application in due to in summary:
So far events have been prioritised in Place Road, St. Mary’s Road and Worsley Road. With regard to the data there is limited evidence to suggest that speeding is an issue in Worsley Road. However, in Place Road there were a number of incidents of speeding traffic. In response, I will be using feedback received to provide evidence for better enforcement and action to reduce traffic speeds.
(i) The size and scale of properties and subsequent loss of privacy/amenity to properties nearby. (ii) Concerns regarding water run-off. (iii) Concerns the proposal is on a green field site outside the settlement boundary and that no special circumstances warrant development at this location. (iv) Concerns regarding coalescence between Gurnard, Cowes and Northwood. (v) Ecological concerns regarding the loss of the hedgerow, with the need for an ecology report. (vi) Road access concerns and concerns over the lack of regular transport/ pedestrian links. (vii) Any lighting and footpath materials required should reflect the rurality of the area and (viii) Concerns over the permanency of any permitted path.
In addition, I am following up the need for the Council to coordinate a small pool of lollipop ladies/ gents to be on standby in the event of sickness/ holiday.
• Place Road: 14 dwellings, Former Poultry Farm, Land adj. 77 Place Road. Ref: 20/02229/OUT. A modified version of last year’s application to build 14 dwellings is currently being consulted upon.
Security Lighting and Garden CCTV - I continue to receive complaints regarding security lighting within gardens. If you have lighting, please can you ensure this is directed away from those living nearby as residents can find equipment invasive. Cowes Medical Centre - The practice is currently contacting patients who are entitled to both Covid and Flu Vaccinations. Drop-ins are by appointment only. Dog Bins - I have received a number of complaints concerning owners disposing of household dog waste in bins. When this happens, particularly with big dogs, bins can over-fill quickly which impacts upon those living nearby and genuine dog walkers who the bins are provided for.

News report from Cllr Paul Fuller continued Local Access Forum • Isle Access provided an update on disabled access to the Islands Rights of Way network. • Because of the wet and warm conditions of this summer overgrown rights of ways are of concern. • Locally action was taken against Escooters. Four people were arrested, and private e-scooters were confiscated. • Access has been restricted to the beach at Thorness. This follows the dumping of fly tipped rubbish. In response the road to the beach has been locked by a barrier, however I am assured access is available to mobility scooters and those accessing the beach by wheelchairs Top Tips from the Footprint Trust to help you keep Warm & Safe this Winter. OFGEN has reported that for 15 million Energy Customers bills will increase from 1st October. Also this month. • Through the Draft Island Planning Strategy, I have now attended most of the 43 Parish Council Meetings/ Library and Community Group Drop-Ins. In this time, we have met over 500 residents who have offered feedback on the latest proposals for what will eventually (Spring 2023?) become the Island’s Planning Bible. Comments and debates have taken place throughout the Island, and I look forward to officers and colleagues evaluating all evidence and views expressed. • I have been approached by a number of residents who have been unable to meet with their Councillor. Since the Jo Cox MP murder, Councillors no longer have to disclose where they live and in some cases contact can be difficult.

November Facts November actually translates into “ninth month” in Latin. It was the ninth month of the year before January and February were added to the Roman Calendar. Despite its change to 11th position, November was never renamed.

The Anglo-Saxons had quite the fitting name for November. It’s usually at this time of the year in the northern hemisphere that cold winds start to chill you to the bone, and as such, they called it “Wind Monath”, or wind month. The November birth flower is the chrysanthemum. One of the world’s most popular cut flowers because of its variety. Available in a huge spectrum of colours these flowers are thought to bring good luck and joy into any home Those born in November can be born under one of two very different star signs. If you’re born before November 23rd then you have the sign of Scorpio. Those born on November 23rd or later have the sign of Sagittarius. Scorpios are said to value trust and honesty above other things, as well as being quite intense yet imaginative people. Those born under the sign of Sagittarius are quite different, being energetic and idealistic, while also generous and open-minded. According to research published in 2008, serial killers are more likely to be born in November than any other month.
Happy Birthday to all those celebrating this month.
