Calling all animal lovers…. Your help is urgently needed.

The Cinnamon Trust is national charity and a much-needed source here on the island. Their objective is to respect and preserve the treasured relationship between owners and their pets. They work in partnership with people over retirements age and those in the latter stages of a terminal illness to offer all kinds of free pet care.

The Cinnamon Trust are looking for volunteers to help island pet owners. They cover the whole island and therefore need volunteers from all areas. They currently have pet owners in Newport and Cowes who are in need of immediate help and support for their beloved dogs who love a good walk.

By volunteering you will be supporting the dogs by providing regular exercise to keep them in tip top condition and you will also be taking away a worry from the owner who will no doubt have enough on their plate already.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, you can download the volunteer registration form from the

Many elderly or ill pet owners worry about their ability to provide appropriate care for their loved pets and rather than them having to rehome what could be their only companion, The Cinnamon Trust with the help of their amazing volunteers can step in and provide the help that is needed, such as walking the dog for a housebound owner, cleaning bird cages and litter trays and even foster pets while owners need hospital or hospice care.

How can we be heading into September already? I honestly do not know where this year has gone! If you are a regular reader of this community publication you may remember that the last few years, the September issue front cover has always been dedicated to anything tractor themed. This is partly because I have always had a love of tractors and secondly September is harvesting season and we are never far from a tractor, ploughed field, farmland or to the frustration of many but to my delight stuck behind one in traffic. I will be showing my age here, but I remember years ago when I was growing up, I looked forward to helping load the bales on to the trailer which in those times were just held on with a bit of rope and then sitting on the top bouncing about as we went along the road. Back then, health and safety wasn’t an issue and at times there could be a few of us on the top of the stack and if any of the bales did fall on the road, then we just stopped and picked them up. In those days everything was just a bit more laid back. There wouldn’t have been moaning, honking of horns or even road rage when this happened, just acceptance that your journey may be delayed by a few minutes. Imagine how this would be greeted on Coppins Bridge now!! In this issue you will find all the regular news reports, puzzles, dates for your diary, features and much more.

For once I am not going to make any comments on the weather... it is what it is, and we just have to take each day as it comes and, on that note, I wish you all a wonderful September and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

What’s happening in our area by ‘Local and Vocal’ Lora Peacey-Wilcox Council for paying for them. A truly superb display this year, and a good red, white and blue theme for the royal year.

PLANTERS ON COWES SIGNS: don’t know about you, but WOWZER what a magnificent display and during a heatwave too. My sincere thanks to whoever plants and maintains them, especially the person watering them…! And to Cowes Town

HOT WEATHER: I do hope you all coped okay? I sat indoors with north facing doors open, all curtains closed with a fan on... and generally on the computer working most days. It sure was pretty unbearable.

PATIENCE: I have been quite surprised at people’s lack of patience and understanding. We know there is a huge shortage of people within ALL sectors, health, business, councils, everywhere, which means the few dedicated staff who are working are under massive pressure. Be kind and understanding please. Meanwhile, please look after your physical, mental and financial health. As always, you are my eagle eyes! Keep me informed of issues: lora08@sky.com Multi award

FUEL INCREASES: I would be interested to know what you have done in preparation. Were you clever and wise and chose set prices? What saving ideas have you undertaken? I’ve only ever done a full load in the washing machine and dishwashers over the years… (I particularly like my smaller dishwasher); keeping the lights off? Unplugging all those items that are just ‘on’? Being mindful of putting the kettle on? Using a flask? We all need to work together for solutions. The Footprint Trust really know their ’stuff’ when it comes to energy; I am sure they will be terribly busy; have you looked at all your other bills for money savings? Shame we couldn’t have stored all the heat of the past few months and used during Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan and Feb eh?

ITS RAINING: Well, it is at the precise time of my writing. Who would have ever thought we’d be wishing for rain? Let’s hope my water butts get a chance to refill after all four being completely drained!

BUDGET: Are you organised, and can you budget your finances? There are many people out there who simply do not know how to do this. They end up in a dreadful mess. Wouldn’t it be good, if some of us that could help out those who do not understand? Not as easy as it sounds… but Citizen’s Advice offers help and support. COWES WEEK: How did you enjoy it or not? What are your thoughts? Do you think its format needs changing? Again, I would be interested in your thoughts. My thanks to those dedicated staff who worked throughout! I thought it seemed quiet….?

Problems with Airbnb properties and noise are a common problem. The best course of action is to write to the landlord explaining your issue with noise and inform them you will contact the environmental health officer if it continues. We all want holiday makers to have a great time whilst here, but it’s not unreasonable to ask them to respect their Ferryneighbours.reliability continues to be an issue and I continue to push Red Funnel and Wightlink to explain their solutions. Also remember discounted travel is available for NHS appointments, this is available by calling them directly ( Red Funnel 02380019192, Wightlink 03339997333)

Hopefully you all had an enjoyable Cowes week, entries were down by almost half, but reports are the sailing was good and those that visited had a good time. I appreciate it can be inconvenient for those living in the middle of it, so thank you for bearing with the festivities.

Another reminder that with the good weather, come more visitors to our lovely town. Which seems to mean more overflowing litter bins. The quickest way to get this actioned is via the Island roads website www.islandroads.com and click on the report it online button. The same goes for any other issues you see around the Residentstown. of Castle Road continue (quite rightly) to highlight the state of the land on Market Hill and the proposed development for the land. The land is still unkempt, and the proposed building might raise a few eyebrows. A complaint about the state of the land has been submitted to the council and they are following up with the landowner.

It is now clear that the (very badly named) energy price cap will increase to over £4000, which is very scary for a lot of people. I have qualified as a citizen’s advice first aider and urge us all to point anyone you know that might need some assistance in their direction. www.citizensadviceiw.org. uk 0800144884. The Footprint Trust offers practical help and action on how to reduce bills now.

What a start to the summer weather wise. It is great for holiday makers and tourist businesses, but good news aside, we all need to be aware of the changes to our climate. Any little changes we can make to reduce our energy usage and CO2 help.

September Facts and Events

September only has one birthstone though, but with a stone like this, who needs another? The stone is the majestically vivid sapphire. With its deep blue tones, this precious stone is said to represent the wisdom of the gods, purity, and trust. Sapphires were once worn to protect the wearer from both poisoning and other evils.

September was originally the seventh month of the ancient Roman calendar, and as such it was named Septem, which translates into “the seventh month”. It wasn’t until 451 BC that the months of January and February were added to the calendar, making September the ninth Septembermonth.heralds the beginning of Autumn in the northern hemisphere, with it officially commencing on the September equinox, which this year will be at 02:03 on Friday 23rd SeptemberSeptember. 1, 1939, was a dark day for the world. It was on this day that Hitler invaded Poland, consequentially beginning World War II.

September 11, 2001, changed the shape of the world forever. It was on this fateful day that the worst terrorist attack on US soil happened when four commercial airliners were hijacked. Two of the planes were flown straight into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre, and another was crashed into the Pentagon. The fourth plane crash-landed into a field in Pennsylvania after the passengers of the flight attempted to regain control of the plane from the terrorists.

September is graced with having two different birth flowers. The two flowers are the vibrant aster and the beautiful yet resilient morning glory. The significance of both flowers is actually very similar, with the aster being said to represent love, while the morning glory represents affection.
