News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love It’s once again been a busy month for me as your East Cowes Ward councillor and there is lots happening for our town with more to come. I have said before that East Cowes is undergoing a transformation and whilst not yet visible, planning and discussions are taking place in the background which will change East Cowes forever. In my view, it is important for the people of both East Cowes and Whippingham to be kept fully informed and to be engaged and active participants in the planning and changes coming to our town. As a community we have all asked questions about the floating bridge, the red funnel development, East Cowes Marina development, Spring Hill and Norris Castle development and the Kingston Link Road. The East Cowes Esplanade and landslip also continue to pose real concerns and issues for the town. I can assure you I have been having meetings at every level in order to influence a positive outcome for our townspeople. I am supported in this by many local residents who are actively engaging in the issues and without the support of our town council, business Association and local activists I would not be properly informed and unable to represent your best interests. There is a great deal going on which I hope you will express your comments and ask questions about. Your local town councillors have been kept extremely busy and I was delighted to see them engaging with the people of our community at the floating bridge town meeting. It is important that the towns voice is 4

heard with all these current developments happening so I encourage you to write your questions and make your opinions known not only to your town council but to the Isle of Wight Council Chief Executive, John Metcalfe. If we are to influence positive change we must be united and make comments known. I will do my best to do this at every media level. The Red funnel enquiry has now taken place and it is expected that the outcome decision of this will be published in September. I’m writing this report prior to the enquiry taking place and so I can’t make many comments. What matters is that this development has positive outcomes for our townspeople and that our town does not become a gigantic car park. The outdoors gym, located at the Pavilion is nearing completion and I hope that you will all enjoy this facility. I am in the process of arranging to meet with Island Roads to have a walk around the town and discuss various issues including traffic calming and Old Road, double yellow lines in Newbarn Road on the bend, double parking of vehicles and pavements in Yarborough Road, Kingston Link Road, the disabled bay outside the co-op in York Avenue, East Cowes Esplanade, the floating bridge traffic scheme which has become a dangerous nightmare for residents and of course the dreaded sandbags return. I would ask for your patience in my response to you in any communications that you make with me at this time. I am now

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love receiving a large number of emails and letters from you which I welcome and will try to respond when time allows. As a general rule I will try to post information both in this publication and on my Facebook site Cllr Karl Love, to try keep people informed. Finally I would like to encourage you all, if you have not done so to step inside our East Cowes town Heritage Centre and explore the rich history of our town. It is truly eye-opening and they would welcome new members to join them and in keeping East Cowes history alive.

Did you know that this magazine, or rather Island Magazines, is also a member of ECBA? We use some of our funds to pay for this space which the committee believe is a great way of supporting a local business as well as sharing news with the wider community. Local Photographers Choosing the front cover each month is made so much easier by having wonderful local photographers who are always happy for me to use their photographs and this month is no exception as I have come across the work of amateur photographer Tara Harvey.

The only problem I had was deciding which of her photos to use as they were all amazing but there was just something about the Friendly Professional Service ‘poppy’ that caught my eye and in an instant I knew this was the one for August. Home Visits Tara was born on the Island but moved to Tel: 01983 533938 London 20 years ago to further her career in the fashion industry. The stress and city 69a High Street Newport life was no match for the laidback Isle of www.pwsolicitor.co.uk Wight and after a few years Tara decided to move back to the Island. So far Tara had not Helping you Achieve shown a real passion for photography and was quite happy to continue taking photos your Aims in Life with her compact camera but that all changed when her friend lent her a DSLR camera and Tara took some photos of the red arrows over the Solent. She was then hooked and went and brought her own camera and so her photography journey began...

Lasting Powers of Attorney

Helping you Achieve your Aims in Life

Tara works full time in Newport and in her spare time she does wedding dress alterations but always ensures she finds time to get out and about to different locations across the Island with her camera. Tara doesn’t have a particular style but does prefer wildlife and landscapes and she also enjoys the editing side which allows her to turn really good images into fantastic photos.

A big thank you to Tara for allowing Island Magazines to use her photo and I am sure we will be featuring more of her work in the future.

Town Mayor Report for East Cowes From Peter Lloyd (Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor)

I am sure that you would like to join with me in sending our deepest sympathy and condolences to Margaret Webster and her family on their sad loss of John who passed away peacefully at the end of June. The Floating Bridge saga continues. The Town Council had its meeting with representatives from Cowes Town Council, ECBA and the public, but with no invited IWC officers present. It also held a public meeting as arranged and again no invited officers tuned up. Instead I read a letter from John Metcalfe, CEO, to the meeting confirming that Cllr. David Stewart; Leader of the Council, Cllr Ian Ward; Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Transport and the relevant officers would attend the next ECTC meeting.

They are working closely with the IWC conservation officer who makes regular visits to the site.

I was impressed with the standard of work which I was informed is being carried out in the main by local firms. The majority of residents that I have spoken to have told me that they are pleased that work is under way and with the look of the building so far. The owner has informed me that he is hoping to hold an open day later in the year when the site will be open to visitors I would like to thank the 150 plus people who and that he would like to erect a plague to attended the public meeting and acted in an commemorate the work done by the Friends orderly manner throughout, also Kirsten for of Frank James in saving the building. giving a most informative presentation. Perfect Homemade Burgers It’s definitely BBQ season and you can’t beat the taste of a homemade burger. This recipe is just 6 ingredients and takes less than 20 minutes to make so you won’t be tied to the kitchen. This recipe is using beef mince but you can easily substitute it for turkey mince for a more leaner option without losing any of the taste. These burgers can be cooked on the BBQ, under the grill, fried or in the oven. Sandwich your burger between a floury bap or a ciabatta roll, top with fresh lettuce, sliced tomatoes, red onion, cheese and a spread of relish. These will be loved by adults and children alike Top tip: The eggs and breadcrumbs aren’t essential but will help bind the ingredients together. Serves 4 Ingredients • 500g good quality mince • Good pinch of oregano • 1tsp salt • Pinch of black pepper • handful of breadcrumbs or 2 slices of bread • 1 egg, lightly beaten Method 1.

Place the ingredients in a large bowl and mix together or whizz all the ingredients in a food processor until the mixture starts holding together.

2.

Shape the burgers into round flat discs with wet hands. To get perfectly round shapes, press the mixture into a metal pastry cutter. Don’t over-handle the burgers

3.

Place the burgers on the barbecue or in a frying pan and cook until they’re done all the way through and there’s no pinkness in the middle. To check this, press down the top of a burger with a fish slice - if there are pink juices oozing out, then cook for a few more minutes.

4

Serve on a lightly toasted ciabatta with salad and toppings and enjoy!!!

The Mobile Vet provides an Islandwide veterinary service in their bespoke mobile vehicles and also have a fully equipped veterinary surgery at the IOW Pet Centre, Watergate Road, Newport. New services on offer include CT scans and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. They are the only vets on the Island to offer these services. Laparoscopic surgery is standard for all human patients as it is significantly less painful. The surgery involves operating through two tiny incisions in the abdomen and utilising cameras & specialised tools through the holes. Patients are up and about much faster than an old fashioned spay. No more head collars and owners do not have to take days off work to look after their pet.
