What is an Alzheimer Café? An Alzheimer Café is a meeting place that provides informal education and information about the issues surrounding dementia. Alzheimer Cafés welcome everyone who has an interest in dementia; people with dementia, their families and friends and people in the community, who would like to learn more about dementia. Alzheimer Cafés provide an informal, safe, and sensitive environment for, sharing feelings, giving, and receiving support and guidance, and provides the opportunity to make new friends with people in similar situations. Alzheimer Cafés have a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Each month there is a speaker who presents information on a dementia related subject, sometimes from another service, and welcomes professionals and visitors’ who provide updates and information on their areas of expertise. The Alzheimer Café Team will give you a warm welcome, ‘a listening ear’, provide refreshments and signpost people to other services and agencies, where appropriate, to access information and services. There is no need to book to attend an Alzheimer Café, you are welcome to come along to any of the Cafés across the Island (ACE7 is for people with Young Onset Dementia aged 45-65 years). There is no charge to attend an Alzheimer Café – but we welcome donations in the orange collection boxes. (Booking is only necessary when Covid-19 restrictions apply.) Welcome to the August issue and there is no denying that summer is here! Whilst writing this we are in the middle of an amber weather warning for the extreme high temperatures the island is experiencing... like many others I am finding it quite unbearable, but it could be worse - we could be in a built-up city, hours away from the beach and ocean.

The island's longest established independent family funeral directors are proud to open in East Cowes to serve the local community Professional, personal & caring service

I’ve been seeking shelter and enjoying picnics under the trees in many of the parks we have on the Island. Isn’t it amazing what we have on our doorsteps?

Call Richard or Caroline day or night on 872598 Weaver Brothers Ltd Link Road, East Cowes, IW, PO32 6RN

This month is set to be a great month email: info@weaverbros.co.uk on the Island, as after being absent for a www.weaverbros.co.uk couple of years due to the pandemic we Telephone: (01983) 872598 can finally say that August is once again Carnival time... Our dates for your diary section on pages 12 and 13 is a handy guide to know what’s on and when, ensuring you don’t miss any of the fun or if carnivals just aren’t your thing, you’ll know which areas to avoid and when!!! This month’s issue is once again packed with news, information, local advertising, puzzles and much more. I need to stop looking at this month’s front cover as the temptation to get up and leave the office in search of a 99 with an extra flake is very strong. I have certainly eaten more than my fair share of ice cream during this hot spell, but I believe that by eating them I am supporting local businesses... well that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. Please keep using the services of local advertisers who advertise with us, and I hope you all have a lovely August, and, on that note, I am off to get an ice cream! See you again next month.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love As we move into August, we have seen some incredible heatwave temperatures. Please take care out in the sun and use lots of Sun creams, factor 30 is the recommended minimum along with wearing a hat. We will be lighting the Jubilee Beacon again along the esplanade on Friday 5th August and the Waverley Park have announced they will be putting on some fireworks as they did last year. On the 11th August the Town Council intends to dedicate and open the East Side Curve at 11am and it will be open till 2pm for public perusal. This is the extension of the Town Hall. Please come along to see your new town facility incorporating a library.

of young people. Our island birth rate is currently falling, and this affects many things. The 2021 census reveals an increase of 24.7% in people aged 65 years and over (compared with an increase of 20.1% across younger people in England as a whole), a decrease of 5.3% in people aged 15 to 64 years, and a decrease of 6.3% in children aged under 15 years. This data helps our council plan for the future and for example, the reducing birth rate is already being seen on the island affecting school and preschool places.

At the time of writing this report the Spring Hill Preschool facility in East Cowes, which is a charitable organisation, is facing some difficult choices as its role numbers have reduced significantly. With only 8 In other news on 27th and 28th August our pupils, thus far, signed up for the 22/23 Town Hall will be hosting an Indonesian academic years, its future is in the balance cultural event. News Report from Cllr Karl Love continued housing accommodation on these sites. It is a legal condition which our Islands previous Tory administration agreed and made when purchasing the land. Work must commence to achieve this development in the next 18 months, or the entire project will fail and we will have to return the property to Homes England and receive in payment just £1. Who in their right mind would agree to such a nonsensical agreement, putting our council budgets at future risk? The point is our council has no choice but to build on these two sites. The Norris and Spring Hill development has been delayed for a decision but expected in this year and I have noted that traffic monitoring is currently being conducted at the proposed entrance to the development site along the Esplanade in East Cowes. Planning applications are also under consideration for the building of Important Marine/Ship/Boat service facilities at Kingston Marina on the former gravel extraction area. This would see much needed new facilities helping to employ local people and keep our heritage status for boat and shipbuilding current and sustainable. There is work now progressing on the Saunders Way link road connection. It has been a painstaking effort to get the developers to move forwards and I personally hope we never see them again in East Cowes after them failing to deliver the development highway elements in a timely engaging manner.

Households are being protected individually but our town will be left to food and important businesses will be unprotected. It’s not just about protecting homes. We have some incredibly important business and employment assets to protect in East Cowes. The town’s utility services lie largely underground, and I have questioned this with the Environment Agency. I don’t see how allowing East Cowes to become like little Venice, will help anyone and encourage investment into the East Cowes Waterfront and Venture Quays investment projects. I questioned this from the outset of using temporary flood prevention solutions to protect our town when it was first noted as a solution. What we need is a more permanent longterm solution. We have to face the reality however that with rising global tides we will see these flooding more frequently. I understand the flood barriers stored with island roads are to become part of national flood assets. I asked, will we see the 250k recovered from this failed scheme to be reinvested into East Cowes Flood defences. After all, this funding was designated to protect our town.

I hope that you all enjoy the summer months and have lots of fun exploring our beautiful island. David and I had our first Camping trip on the island exploring new places for us to see and visit and we hope you can experience something different and new this summer. Our town council has worked hard to improve the Esplanade for It’s incredibly disappointing that the flood your enjoyment so please have fun enjoying barriers which were purchased at a cost it. If you use the new picnic tables and have of £250k and demonstrated to the public a BBQ, please may I ask that you don’t at East Cowes Town Hall during the place it on the tables or on the benches as it Environment Agencies consultation are to be can damage them. abandoned leaving our town susceptible to flooding. 7

August Facts and Historial Events On the 6th August 1762, the first-ever sandwich was created. It was named after the Earl of Sandwich when he requested a dish involving meat between two pieces of bread. As the story goes, he requested it as he was in the middle of a gambling game and didn’t want to interrupt it.

different though, as it is a sign of imagination, eternal sleep, and oblivion!

August was a big month for the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. It was on the 28th August 1963, that Martin Luther King Jr gave his famous “I have a dream” speech to 250,000 people on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. Considered to be one of the most iconic speeches in the history of the US, King’s speech called for the end of racial discrimination and for equal rights to all.

There are of course many incredibly famous and important people who have been born in August including Usain Bolt, Madonna, Sean Connery, Barack Obama, Whitney Houston and although not famous, I myself (Debbie).

Unlike most other months, August has just one birthstone – peridot. One of the lesser-known gems, peridots come in shades from grassgreen to a more earthy olive hue. They’re quite a unique gem, and quite rare as they can only be found from two very different sources – they August was once the sixth month of the year. can be formed deep in the earth and expelled In the original ten-month Roman calendar, the to the surface along with lava, and they can be month went by the name of Sextilis, meaning found in meteorites! “the sixth month” in Latin.
