Welcome to the December and Christmas edition of Island Magazines. Like me you are probably wondering where the year has gone and the mild weather we have been experiencing certainly doesn’t make it feel like Christmas is just around the corner... but believe me it is!! 2017 has been a great year and Island Magazines has gone from strength to strength and this is thanks to our advertisers, readers and contributors who have continued to support our local community publication.

East Cowes Business Association News by Simon Craddock I love December; the dark evenings, sounds, smells and general buzz building up to the excitement of Christmas Day. It has even become tradition that I buy the ingredients for Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve; “But what if there are no spouts?”, “But what if there are no turkeys?” and “Are you mad?!” are all questions I face every year, but as much as I love to sit down with the perfectly presented plate, it isn’t about a single meal, it is about the traditions that my family have passed down and those which we are now making ourselves. It isn’t about who has bought what, it isn’t ruined by lumpy gravy or overcooked sprouts, and it isn’t even about scoffing a whole chocolate orange to myself, guilt free. For many business owners such as myself, Christmas is a good place to take a moment and weigh it all up, and for some, it can be the make or break. It seems for many, especially shop keepers that the biggest threat is online shopping; it can be done at any time, in any weather and there are no queues at the till. The draw backs are that if you miss the postman, you have to hope that it will be left with a neighbour, or drive into Newport which takes more time and costs more than you may have saved (and the chances are you’ll have to queue). For every pound spent in your local business community, regardless of whether a shop, plumber, hairdresser or hotel, that is money that is staying in East Cowes, and that can only be a great thing. As many of you know, Tracy Reardon has been active on the business association (and many other community groups) for many years and just last month, her own business, Flix, turned 30 years old. Like the hairstyles, Tracy and her team have had to keep on track on changes, yet continue to deliver a service that people will like and come back to. On behalf of ECBA, I would like to wish Tracy and team all the best for the future. Other businesses that have formed the backdrop to our town include Housecrafts coming in at 50 years, and of course, Red Funnel who started in 1861 (the same year as HRH Prince Albert died). Kathy’s is not far off the big 4-0 with Valu-4-U standing proud at 21 years. These are major achievements, and have rightly earnt a place in the history of our town, but all of them have had to change and grow with the town and the demands of the customers. ECBA is celebrating Small Business Saturday with yet another FREE draw on Saturday 2nd December. First prize is an Annual English Heritage Membership for two (which includes up to 6 under 18s per adult). This can be used at any of the 400+ sites across the country (including Osborne House, Carisbrooke and Yarmouth Castles and Appuldurcombe House). We 4

also have a brand new building bricks Red Funnel ferry, plus ferry tickets to give away! All you have to do is collect a form from Valu-4-U, Flix or one of the other participating businesses from 9am on Saturday 2nd December and spot the 12 Christmas posters around town. It is completely free to enter and open to all (please note that there is no cash alternative and if an under 18 wins the membership or ferry ticket, the prize will be given to their legal parent / guardian). The draw will take place at 3:30pm that afternoon! On behalf of the ECBA, I would like to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year. Now, where is that chocolate orange? Town Mayor Report for East Cowes From Peter Lloyd
(Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor) Umbrella Tree: Island Roads have reported that our umbrella tree, which I believe was planted in 1914, has a fungal growth on its trunk. The Isle of Wight Council’s tree officer has had a look and confirmed that the tree is dying and that there is no way of saving it. Its life may be prolonged for a short period of time by removing the affected area which would reduce its weight by approx. 30% upwards. Island Roads are responsible for the tree and public safety and are monitoring the situation monthly. At the time of writing no decision has been taken as to whether the tree stays or goes. I have been told that options might include suspending the use of the seating and/or a perimeter fence around the tree. The umbrella tree is a weeping ash and as we are being affected nationally by ash die back fungus I can only assume that it is this that our tree has. We are being offered a replacement tree for that area at Island Roads expense. They are offering a choice of: Weeping Willow- I feel that this is not the right tree for that area - Mulberry Tree - it would drop its fruit on the surrounding area and the seating, or last choice Weeping Birch - my preference of the 3. I would point out that this is just my opinion on the offered trees. Also there is no truth in the East Cowes rumour that Island Roads wish to remove the tree to allow for 3 lanes of traffic in that area. EC Regeneration: Victoria Quay Marina, Cowes Harbour Commissioners have said that phases 2 and 3, a dredged eastern channel and the extension to the Shrape breakwater will not be going ahead this winter as planned. This is due to the funding agreement between CHC the developer of the marina and the HCA having been further delayed. 8
The Amy White Theatre: This years pantomime is Jack and the Beanstalk. All tickets are £6 with under 4’s free. The performance dates are Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th December. For more information see their main advert on page 12. Floating Bridge: IW Cllr. Ian Ward has told Cllr. J. Rann “That work on the Floating Bridge is making good progress, but a definite date for the return to service has not yet been made by the IWC.” The IWC has issued a press release stating that their review findings are not being revealed until January 2018 MUGA: Why is it that after we provide the youth with a new facility, a minority of mindless, selfish individuals set out to cause damage and as much inconvenience to others as they can? Please keep a watch out and report any anti-social / vandalism. I Wish you all A Very Happy Christmas and may 2018 be a perfect year for you all. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those of you that have helped East Cowes in one way or another over the past year, by giving up your time to fight various causes, raising funds for community projects, help to tidy beaches, streets, open areas and the like, the running and management of numerous groups providing a service to others in the town. I am afraid that more and more society as a whole has to rely on voluntary people such as you, Thank you. 2018 will see the Keziah memorial garden installed; we hope the town will have its floating bridge back and the long awaited regeneration of our town will start. We live in hope!

We became CQC Regulated in 2014 and we have a team of 20 local caring professionals who are on hand to assist any way they can. We actively support people and their families who live with dementia and those living with a learning/physical disability. We believe that no one should struggle, feel lonely or isolated as we are just a phone call away.
