elcome and can you believe this is the December issue and Christmas is very nearly upon us.

I can feel the excitement in the air in the build up to the big day and our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section is brimming with events happening both locally and across the island. There is a Christmas Fayre or event for everyone, whether you’re a Christmas fanatic or best friends with the Grinch! Although we still have a long road ahead of us regarding Covid, at least we are in a better place than we were this time last year and we can get to spend time with family and friends over the festive period. December is the start of winter and I remember back when we had that week-long heat wave in summer, I was wishing for the colder weather... as they say, be careful what you wish for!! With the weather set to turn cold please remember to check on others, especially if you have elderly neighbours or anyone on their own. Winter is a lonely time for many and just 30 minutes of company can be the difference between a good day and a bad day. On another note... who spotted the typo in last month’s sudoku puzzle? Thanks to Nathan for letting me know and my apologies to everyone for this oversight and I hope it didn’t puzzle you too much. I hope you all have a great December and I wish you A Very Merry Christmas and I look forward to catching up with you again in the New Year.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love I attended this year’s Wishing you a Very Happy Christmas remembrance service at St and New Year. 2022 will be another year James, as I have always done of bumper-to-bumper changes for our since being a boy, who proudly laid a community and town. Please try to shop wreath on behalf of the Boys Bridge in the local where possible as our town shops have 1970’s. The wreath I laid is on behalf of not only suffered from lost business of the you, the people of our town. We will always floating bridge but also from increasing remember them. online retailing competition. We have heard about the 5.8 million Government ‘Levelling-up Budget’ which will bring back to life the Old Barracks and create a new improved public area at Albany Green. It’s still early days in the making and I will try to ensure your comments and ideas are incorporated into the new look Albany Esplanade area. For clarity, this funding is not for the Floating Bridge or our Town Centre, it’s for the specific job of creation and employment stability. There will be improvements to the Columbine Building and a new host for Wight Shipyard who received a magnificent Queen’s Award for industry in November. The Floating Bridge announcement we wait for will finally put it to bed and not before time. There are lots of discussions about a replacement and if this is the case it will take several years to achieve. However, it would be the beginning of the end and new beginnings for our town’s future. Work will also commence in restoring the Historic Barracks and transforming our Esplanade in 2022 and having HM Queen Elizabeth Platinum Jubilee Celebration will bring a splash of colour and new green canopy.

PLANNING APPLICATION –To this end the Norris Castle and Spring Hill Developers have posted comments recently about their intention to submit their planning proposal to develop this National important and recognised listed landscape. We wait to see what the proposals are. Please watch out for more information online. There will be a town meeting organised to inform and discuss this proposal once the planning proposals are presented and issued for public comments. The Isle of Wight Council long awaited road Traffic Regulations Orders (TRO) for East Cowes have been discussed along with other TRO. This has been in the making for almost two years and they will now be implemented. A town consultation took place and the East Cowes Town Council asked for an extension of the consultation period but that was rejected by the Isle of Wight Council Officer. There are Various Streets, 22 in total in East Cowes, order No 1 202. Parking in East Cowes is always going to be difficult because the town was built around its industries and not with traffic and parking in mind. There is no quick fix and I suspect that as we move from fuel to electric or hydrogen, we will see increasing pressure and taxes from the government.

We will see phase 1 of the restoration of the landslip completed for summer 2022. There will of course need to be further restorations Residents from East Cowes have been working hard to collect information and of the esplanade including the community continued over the page areas and Albany Green area.

News Report from Cllr Karl Love continued sampling the water quality along the East Cowes Esplanade, A survey has been conducted about how our community uses the beaches and sea along the Esplanade. A massive thank you goes to Lin Kemp for pulling together an application to DEFRA to obtain Bathing Water Quality Status for our Esplanade in 2022. A huge amount of effort has gone into this work, and we await a response. Thank you to Michael Douse for his efforts in this matter and for organising over many years beach cleans and meetings to address water quality. I will keep you informed of the outcome of the application. There is currently a lot of discussion about Southern Water and pollution. I can say lots of meetings and communications about this are taking place right across the island and in town and parish meetings. We are not alone in our concerns. I have raised concerns about the quality of the work reinstatement undertaken by WightFibre in East Cowes as they for the second time are digging up our highways to redo works that their previous contractors failed to install correctly. How WightFibre can be allowed to continue laying cables when they are on an improvement notice for their poor workmanship and have been on notice for more than a year and still be allowed to keep digging up our roads when their failure rate for reinstatement quality is well over 90% That’s correct, less than 10% of their works are acceptable reinstatements. The previous works in East Cowes failed and were named as second-rate reinstatements resulting in the contractors being replaced but this work today is even worse than the first lot of contractors and they should be held to account for the damage they are causing to our Highways. I have drawn this to the attention of IWC, The Cabinet

Member for Infrastructure and Highways and Island Roads. Let’s just say they did not disagree with me. There are significant workforce issues affecting our Island Adult Social Care (ASC). I recently had an article printed in the local Government Associations journal about the Government’s ‘Build Back Better’ plan for health and social care proposals. However, government funding proposals have not materialised in the way that they were described as resolving our crisis in ASC. The government does not capture the seriousness of our local situation on the Isle of Wight, where a crisis in the critical rented social housing sector is reducing our ability to recruit to all workforce sectors, including ASC. Such is the situation that we are asking our council staff if they can rent out rooms to new recruits as it is very complex for an Island like ours to recruit in the first place. We must have more workforce capacity and we need the funding to do this. Having a career in ASC is rewarding in so many ways and as we move forward. I am very worried about the winter pressures ahead. Please help us by getting your Covid Boosters and Flu jabs. I need to ask you for your support this winter in giving a helping hand and looking out for those in our community who may need just that extra bit of care and friendship. Please spare a little bit of your time to have a chat or a coffee with those who are less able, live alone and just need encouragement. Every little helps and East Cowes is an amazing community. I look forward to the arrival of 2022 with hope for a brighter future and I wanted to thank you all for your support. We have had a tough few years and now we have hope and finally we will see some town improvements Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year.

• To be humiliated in public • For you to be forced to do something you do not agree with • To be told you are ugly or unattractive • To be forced to choose between your friends or partner/wife/husband • To be controlled • To be made to feel guilty for somebody else’s anger. It is their issue and not your fault.

The next ‘Mind the Gap’ course for women will begin on Monday 10th January 2022 and the ‘Mind the Gap’ course for men will begin on Wednesday 12th January 2022. The 50th Anniversary of launching of the Black Arrow R3 carrying the satellite X3 “Prospero” into orbit. The event was held at Sandown Airport on 28th October 2021. It was well supported and enjoyed by all guests. The Wight Aviation Museum is on the lookout for new volunteers for the next season.

From 1955 Saunders Roe leased the site and tested the rockets ‘Black Knight’, ‘Black Arrow’ and the satellite ‘Prospero’ here before they were launched in Australia. Australian launch The first rocket, known as ‘Black Knight’ was tested in April 1957 at the High Down site and after further tests, the rockets were taken to Woomera in Australia for launching. Black Knight was designed to test the effect of re-entry to the earth’s atmosphere on a missile and to develop the design of large liquid fuelled rockets. In all, 22 Black Knight rockets were launched. From the Black Knight, the Black Arrow, which was designed to put a satellite into orbit, was developed from the late 1960s. In 1971 it was launched from Woomera along with the satellite ‘Prospero’ which was tucked into the nose cone. Sadly, within days of the successful launch, the British Government cancelled the space programme and the final Black Arrow rocket built was given to the Science Museum in London. For further tests the rockets were taken to Woomera in Australia for launching. A Few December Facts... December used to be the tenth month of the Roman year, and it gets its name from the word ‘decem’, which means ten. December originally had just 30 days according to the ancient Roman calendar. When the calendar was changed for the Julian calendar, December gained a day, making it the seventh and last month in the year with 31 days. In the northern hemisphere winter begins on either December 1st (if you follow the meteorological seasons), or after the winter solstice on the 20th or 21st of December (if you follow the astronomical seasons). There are fewer daylight hours in December in the northern hemisphere than in any other month. More than 80,000 people a year are rushed to hospital due to festive falls, Christmas crashes and decoration disasters! About 1,000 people a year are hurt by decorations alone, so be careful with the tinsel this year. The tradition of putting tangerines in stockings comes from the 12th-century French nuns who left socks full of fruit, nuts and tangerines at the houses of the poor. December 12th is Poinsettia Day. December’s flower is the narcissus or holly. December’s birthstones are turquoise, lapis lazuli, zircon, topaz (blue), or tanzanite. December 28th is considered by some to be the unluckiest day of the year. An ancient legend states that forest animals can speak in human language on Christmas Eve. However, it is bad luck to test this superstition. In 1647 Oliver Cromwell, English Puritan leader, banned the festivities of Christmas for being seen as immoral on such a holy day. Anyone who was seen celebrating was arrested! The ban was lifted in 1660. Father Christmas is a magical man of mystery, delivering presents to all the children in the world in just a single night! Researchers have found that his super sleigh would need to travel at 650 miles per second, and stop off at 822 homes every second, in order to successfully deliver every single present! No wonder he needs a whole year to recuperate! 14

• There is a marked increase with (further assistance readily available) scams through WhatsApp messaging with scammers cloning numbers and purporting Call 07912 432 835 to be a close family member or sending a message saying this is my new phone number and subsequently asking for money for various emergencies. WhatsApp have joined forces with Citizens Advice and Friends Against Scams to launch Stop Think Call a new campaign to help educate people on how to protect themselves and their WhatsApp account from fraud, for more information go to www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk/stopthinkcall you can also go to the Friends Against Scams website to watch a short video and learn how to protect yourself and those you care about from scams. • Be wary of text messages purporting to be the NHS – the most recent says that you are eligible for your NHS covid pass and failure to apply may result in a fine – it then provides a link to a website. This is not genuine – there is NO fine for not having a Covid pass – DO NOT click on the link • Another warning to be careful if you receive any emails from friends and contacts asking for money. It is highly likely their account has been hacked and the message will be from a scammer – not a friend. If you aren’t sure pick up the phone and call your friend, you will be doing them a favour as they probably wont even know that their account has been compromised. NEVER respond immediately to any request for financial help even if you know the person well – it is likely to be a scammer posing as them.
