Welcome and thank you for picking up a copy of the February issue of Island Magazines. We are slowly working our way into the new year and Spring is finally getting closer. I have already seen a cluster of crocus bulbs pushing through the surface looking for the sun. Let’s hope they don’t have too long to wait. Have you noticed that as soon as the shelves were cleared of Christmas goodies they were soon replaced with Easter Eggs. Is this good or bad? I’m not sure where I stand on this as on the one hand I think everything is getting too commercialised and happening much earlier then is necessary but on the other hand who doesn’t like chocolate and to be honest I am a creme egg lover and I don’t believe they should be just for Easter... they taste so much better in February!!!! This months issue as usual is packed with news and information from local councillors. We have a great selection of advertiser offering a variety of services and don’t forget Shrove Tuesday is on the 13th February and I look forward to joining many others across the Island in perfecting the perfect pancake flip. I hope you have a great month and look forward to catching up with you soon.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love The lives of East Cowes residents are just about to change so we are told by the media but I’m not so sure that all that was promised will materialise. The Red Funnel Development will proceed but we will have to wait to see if Dover Rd will remain or fall! The White Hart pub days are numbered in what is the 25th anniversary year of its current owners and just one year short of its 160th Birthday in 2019. Information changes so very quickly and this is why I use Facebook, to try keep people informed. I said that I would try to be transparent and keep people informed so I hope this goes somewhere towards that. I enjoy communicating online, talking in the streets and listening to people. I have started my monthly surgeries down at Sea Breeze on the first Thursday of every month from 10.30 to 12.30. So please do pop in and have a chat with me. I can’t be everything to everyone but I will try to help and represent your views. This month the Floating Bridge enquiry report was finally published and I have to say it was a disappointment to me and many others. We were promised an all singing and dancing enquiry report but in the end we only have part of the story and we are told to wait, as our County Council pursue legal actions. Meanwhile we are left with a Floating Bridge which does not meet its performance criteria and a town confused by its reliability. We have given it every chance to succeed but I finally conclude that the best option might be to order a new one and send number 6 back or rebuild it. If that course of action is followed we would require a proper replacement launch service and a full timetable. The County Council need to develop a positive plan B approach to 4
reassure local people of its safety and reliability and to support local business investments. We cannot carry on as we are. In other news we have had some extremely high tides this month and thankfully the flood defence pumps in the town worked protecting shops but that still left some homes sadly under water. The Sand bags were hardly used or moved from their position so people either did not realise the risk or this information was not communicated effectively. This is something I think we need to improve in order to help prepare people for these regular town events. We were promised the connections of Kingstone relief road in autumn 2017 and here we are still waiting! Julia Baker-Smith has been on the case and I will ask Island roads for an update. The next meeting of the East Cowes 2019 meeting is taking place at the East Cowes Methodist Church on February 8th at 7.pm. This meeting will update people of progress and we will shall split into groups to drill down and discuss the planning details of the events. I look forward to seeing you there. Again please keep watching out for the details of the planning consultation of Norris Castle. I don’t have any further information on this yet but you might have noticed the new notice boards outside the town hall which local information can be displayed. It’s another way of helping keep people informed. Finally it’s that time of years when County and local councils are look to set their budget precept and council tax. I think it only fair to say last years East Cowes Town precept was
News Report from Cllr Karl Love continued low but I fear this may come under pressure this year. If you’re watching the local press you can see all the hints about cuts to services and increased council tax. We are effectively going to be paying more for less. It’s my determination that our town will move forward positively whatever the pressures and I know that’s the feeling of our own town council and many people living here. 2018/19 will be our towns years whatever and our community is strong and reactive as we have seen in 2017.

Caught on Camera! This month I have been very fortunate to come across the photography work of Darren Harris who has kindly allowed us to use his exquisite kingfisher photo on the front cover. Like many, Darren is a wildlife enthusiast and his passion is birds of prey and kingfishers. After watching kestrels and photographing them on his phone he decided it was time to invest in a suitable camera to enable him to take his photography to the next level. In doing this, Darren has become accustomed to observing and learning the habits of the vast range of wildlife we have on the Island. The front cover picture was taken as Hersey Nature Reserve in Seaview and Darren is a regular visitor at the reserve and can sit for hours and will often see a flash of blue or orange dart by. By hiding, waiting, observing and keeping still for long enough, whilst ensuring his finger was poised on the shutter button paid off and Darren was able to catch the kingfisher in all its glory whilst it took a well earned rest before flying off again. The details of this truly magnificent bird are clearly shown in the picture and I wonder if he knew he was being watched and decided to play along so Darren could get the perfect shot!! Whatever the reason I think everyone will agree that this picture is just perfect and thank Sunday 11th February you to Darren for allowing us to share it.

Town Mayor Report for East Cowes from Peter Lloyd (Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor)
They say that a New Year brings in a new start and that is certainly true when it comes to our town, with the demolition of the Trinity Buildings by Red Funnel, having started at the beginning of January and the work expected to take approximately 10 weeks to complete. Red Funnels target completion date being the 16th March. This is the first phase of Red Funnels redevelopment of their marshalling yard, the main area or second phase being the Dover Road to Columbine building redevelopment, this new marshalling yard would be in operation some when in 2020. It should be noted that there should be no disruption to the Gridiron pontoon launch service as this will operate from 5 - 7am. Work on the demolition site starts at 7.30am – 5.30pm Monday to Friday, normal Floating bridge service from 7am to 10.30pm. As reported last month the Umbrella tree is to be removed and replaced by a weeping birch. I know and understand why some of you are upset at this. It has been part of the East Cowes town centre for over a hundred years and some have family connections with its planting all those years ago. But I must point out that the Town Council have investigated that the tree is deceased and must be removed, using two independent tree surgeons who both have agreed with the Island Roads findings. Floating Bridge: the IWC issued a Floating Bridge review report in January, for presentation to their Scrutiny Committee. I have sent two letters to the chair of Scrutiny, the first being about the lack of communication from the IWC to the Town Council, which they are now addressing. The second letter is my summary of the Floating 8
bridge review. East Cowes fortunately has some very knowledgeable residents who are giving their time freely to compile the appropriate questions, arrange media coverage / interviews. I should point out that we are wanting to keep the bridge and doing what we can to keep it operational, but the IWC still have a need to address certain issues, and at this point in time, we are limited to the type of questions that can be asked as we cannot ask anything that can be related to the design and build of FB6 because of legal reasons. The Town Council have and are now (at the time of writing) considering the towns precept. We do try to keep any rises in the precept to a minimum. But things are sometimes put onto the TC which are out of our control, like national wage increases, or by the IWC, who in the pass have withdrawn funding from the likes of public toilets, grass cutting of both of the recreation grounds. More IWC cuts are on their way as the IWC have to make cuts of ÂŁ7.5m this year and so funding for youth is to be placed onto town and parish precepts. We have youth provisions for one night only at the park side building and I would like for this to continue. Dave Stewart (leader of the IWC) has also stated that the IWC are unlikely to give town and parish councils assets that generate income for the council, this is understandable and in the IW councils interest to do so, but unfortunately it puts a greater burden onto the likes of us. While we are on the subject the IWC has been chosen for a business rate pilot scheme which is to keep 100% of the rate but to give up the equivalent amount in government funding. No better off then.

East Cowes Business Association News by Simon Craddock I love February, the chaos of Christmas has been tidied up and packed away, New Year resolutions have been made, broken and forgotten about, and life just gets on. Spring cleaning usually starts in my house round about now and with my wife on a mission to declutter, the kids and I have to nail down (or hide) our favourite possessions from the charity bags that appeared in January. February is also the month of Shrove Tuesday, which can only mean one thing – PANCAKE RACES! ECBA are delighted that the event is once again being sponsored by Turner Brooks Recruitment and once again, there is a lot of fun (and goodie bags) on offer. Although this event is primarily aimed at kids, I would like to stress that we’re keen on developing some adult races too, so Mums, Dads, Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents don’t just watch, come and take part too! As Shrove Tuesday falls on the 13th February this year, it is smack bang in the middle of the school half term meaning that all children (and adults!) can take part this year. Because we won’t know participation numbers until the races are about to begin, we’re hoping for good weather as well as your support. It is completely free of charge to watch and race, and is organised simply to bring our great community together for a bit of light-hearted fun. The races will start at 2pm in Kings Square (outside Waitrose) with a pre-school race, working up in ages (don’t worry, we class all those old enough to drive a car simply as adults!) The ECBA AGM is set to take place on 20th March and following the interest expressed, we’ve had to opt for a bigger venue. We’re heading back to Taste of India so if you’re a current (or potential) member, we would really like you to join us for a (short!) meeting and a free curry. This is usually a really sociable event and for sole-traders like me,
is a great chance to catch up and chat. We do need to confirm numbers, so please send an email (address below) no later than the 13th March. Our committee is sadly lacking in members too, so if you want to shape your business community, please let us know. We only meet once a month and you don’t get set homework, we just need your ideas, opinions and enthusiasm. Our St George’s celebration is also underway for the 21st April, we’re hoping to bring back the best bits from the last two years, and introduce a few more activities to keep you busy! If you have any ideas or want to get involved, please contact us. With the agreement of the Town Council, we are replacing the town maps, opting for a different design and showing more of the surrounding area too which will hopefully make it easier for visitors to find their way around the town. We hope that these will be updated by the Spring. As a final point, subscriptions are now due. Membership benefits include discounts at Red Funnel, Osborne House, REAL Employment Law, SJC Planning, promotion throughout media outlets (our website, this magazine, Facebook and Twitter) and the knowledge that you are helping your business community, plus loads more! And that’s it, once again I have a run out of room. Have a great month and please remember to use local services, shops and facilities; by spending money in your town, you help your community flourish.
