Dear Readers Welcome to the first issue of 2016 and a Happy New Year to you all. Christmas is now done and dusted for another year and it’s time to get back to normal. I do love it when the Christmas decorations are put up but I think I like it more when they come down. The house always looks so much bigger and like many others I take my down on New Years Day.

The business started off small in a tiny workshop in Northwood but in 2014 Andy had the opportunity to move to bigger premises at Arreton Barns Craft Village. With these bigger premises came a separate workshop and shop and Andy was able to provide a lot more for local woodworkers and turners and is now the main agent on the Island for RecordPower Tools and Equipment and Chestnut finishing products. The new retail shop attached to his workshop meant that Andy was able to increase the range of items available for resale which include unique bowls, platters and hollow forms. He also sells his products through other shops and galleries on the Island and takes commission work when required for those extra special pieces. The larger workshop has enabled Andy to offer beginners and intermediate bowl turning courses on a one-to-one basis. They have proved very popular with locals and visitors alike. If you are looking for a present for the person who has everything, I bet they haven’t yet had the pleasure of attending one of Andy’s courses which are available as either a half or full day. Both courses have received positive comments from students on Andy’s teaching ability and patience. For more details of these courses visit his website at www.mtwoodturnery.com

Town Mayor Report for East Cowes From Margaret Webster (Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor) I attended with Cllr Rann an AAP meeting in County Hall. During the evening we raised several questions affecting East Cowes, which were discussed at the TC planning meeting. Our comments are to be submitted. The TC Christmas Fair proved a success, many people continued to come through the doors up to the closing at 2pm. The stall holder-all charities-have reported that they all had a good day making it profitable for their organisations. The evening Variety Show again was very enjoyable, we do have a great deal of talent in East Cowes. All the artists were “home grown”, all of them giving their time freely for charity including our PCSO and son who were excellent magicians, and our own TC artist and wife. My thanks to Bob for organising this show for us, your help was very much appreciated. Special thanks to Scott Anderson who did a brilliant job of compering the show.
day – getting the Town Hall ready for the two events. I also thank the Amy White Theatre Committee, for their help during the day. In December I attended the Community Carol Service at St James Church. It was pleasing to watch the two primary schools and brownies involved with their choirs singing carols. Thank you both Holy Cross and Queensgate Primary schools, as I have previously said we have a great deal of talent in East Cowes. I have been asked by the Town Council at their monthly meeting to respectfully ask the residents DO NOT feed the seagulls, with bread etc. Unfortunately this is leading to problems on the seafront, leaving debris which in turn can cause accidents. The seagulls get their natural food from the sea. The worry is that one day a seagull may dive at a child who is eating possibly causing lasting injury. This has happened in other Counties. Thank you all for your consideration.
I have already thanked the Councillors who generously gave raffle prizes, thank you all again. Red Funnel were the business that gave two raffle prices, two day return tickets May I take this opportunity of wishing you all A Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year? for a car day return. I have thanked Nick Smith from Red Funnel on our behalf. INFORMATION. CARE IN THE GARDEN
It’s been a long, hard but worthwhile 4 year journey for John Goodenough and Gill Smith who are the driving force of Care in the Garden, a not for profit organisation that is the hub of the community in bringing structure and stability into the lives of those with support needs. They have given way for opportunities to evolve within the organisation to ensure their team of volunteers who come from all different backgrounds, but have one thing in common, can have the opportunity of a full life and to be treated the same as everyone else. In four years Care in the Garden has gone from strength to strength and John and Gill put their everything into this project which they are so passionate about and which they believe in. The didn’t start with grants instead they created a commercially viable business that ploughs all its profits back into the venture and in turn has enabled them to watch it grow and succeed and transform the life of others. They started with 4 trainees and now have 28 and along the way the trainees have learnt new skills, mixed with others and have improved and worked on their social skills and interaction with members of the public and within the team. There are four main sections to the Care in the Garden structure:
Palmer Brook Community Nursery The Garden Shed Team The Veg Shed Mower Men
Palmer Brook Community Nursery - This is where they started with the plant side of the business, selling to the public and wholesale, they produce, grow and sell plants for each season along with bulbs, plugs and seeds. They offer some of the most competitive prices on the Island and nearly all customers return because the price may be low but the quality isn’t. They have plants to suit all budgets including, hangings baskets, filled troughs and a large variety of indoor and outdoor plants. Whatever your plant requirements are then Care in the Garden should be your first port of call.
The Garden Shed Team - have developed a fantastic decorative range of wood products which include bird tables, troughs, picket fences, wheelbarrows and more. They are also working on an exclusive range of Care in the Garden products and the Christmas period has proved how popular their handmade animal planters have been as they literally scurried out the doors.
The Veg Shed - This is the place to get your fresh Veg including Island free range eggs and sacks of potatoes. They source many local products and freshness is guaranteed. The Veg Shed is growing and there will be some positive changes happening to it in 2016.
The Mower Men - mowing their way across the Island. The Mower Men do mowing for nursing homes and some council contracts and the volunteers work with a professional gardener on these contracts. Care in the Garden as a whole is a community asset and they are moving forward with ongoing development and are pleased to be able to have a dementia friendly team that works with individuals and care homes across the Island.
COME AND SEE US IN JANUARY AND HAVE A BROWSE AROUND THE SHOP The shop at Palmer Brook Nursery is filled with wonderful items and in January they are promoting their wildlife section and are particularly looking after our feather friends and have a range of bird boxes, tables and a fantastic range of feeding wreaths which will ensure the birds aren’t neglected this winter. Their shop also contains a great variety of gifts, pots and ornaments and they have a great selection of plants and a monthly offer so please make sure you pop in to see them and help support this wonderful community project. Resolutions!!!! By Debbie Mason I’ve also thought I was very musical and could easily play a musical instrument, I mean how hard could it be… I’ve covered most of the string section and at least half of the percussion and my neighbours have written to me begging me not to start on the brass section. I aimed to be a one man orchestra, playing gigs at Osborne House but even I have Yep its that time when I think I can better myself, change myself and find a happier self had to admit defeat when I couldn’t even within and whilst writing this I know it’s wrong chime the triangle on time. but every year reasoning goes out the window and I become obsessed with the year ahead. All these resolutions cost me plenty of money Every new year is the year I believe that I am and I haven’t stuck to any of them. Maybe I’m weak or maybe deep down I am just happy going to start loving fitness and obviously with the way I am. each year is a different type of fitness which inevitably means that each year I have to Unfortunately even with no resolutions set buy new fitness gear, new fitness shoes, and for 2016 I just know that it will still be an of course the latest fitness machine and not expensive month as I will definitely be at the forgetting the latest bag, sweat band, drink January sales and yes I do need another one container and all other fashionable fitness of those and I know it’s a size too small but at paraphernalia that goes with it. Once truly that price it’s a bargain and if I don’t get it I kitted out in my new gear I find my fitness obsessions is lucky to last longer that the first might regret it for the rest of my life and one thing I know about life is, you should never week of January, in fact the leftover turkey have regrets. lasts longer then my new gym membership. They say that December is an expensive month and this may be true for many but not me. Oh, don’t get me wrong I’m not some sort of money saving guru, in fact I’m just the opposite. January is my downfall month and all because of ‘New Year Resolutions’.
I don’t just stop there, because I also start the diet!!! “This diet is definitely going to Louise Aitken work” is a favourite saying of mine and one Massage Therapist which becomes a mantra and I am so positive at Cowes Chiropractic Clinic that this is the ONE that I envisage a slimmer and healthier me and reckon I will drop the Relax and de-stress and feel the minimum of one dress size by the end of the benefits of a massage first month. As an incentive I think its best to Experienced in dealing with go out and buy these one dress size smaller conditions such as Multiple clothes before I have reached this new weight Sclerosis, Fibromyalgia, as seeing them hanging in the wardrobe will Diabetes & Arthritis and surely be all the encouragement I need…. All of Pregnancy Massage those clothes have never been worn and most Tel: 01983 282810 have been given to charity shops but a few 83 Mill Hill Road, Cowes have been held back to remind me of what I www.coweschiropracticclinic.co.uk could of achieved but I so miserably failed at. 15

The creation of a new Budget for 2016/17 will be the focus within Last month plans for an outdoor gym and County Hall for the next couple of months new multi-use games area (MUGA) on Victoria Recreation Ground were presented and this will mean many extremely difficult and upsetting decisions to make. The issue to the Town Council to gain their support. is that the government has repeatedly cut This is a project that Cllr Julia Baker-Smith revenue funding to the Council whilst also (Whippingham and Osborne ward) and I have been working on for quite some time passing down extra responsibilities and this means that there isn’t enough money to ensure the use of S106 money for play. to fund all local services. We therefore I am particularly excited about the gym equipment which will be for adults and free appreciate the support of Town and Parish to use. I expect that public consultation will Councils in supporting local services which might otherwise be lost. be held in the near future. One of the ways I’m trying to improve the situation is by finding creative ways to invest capital money (from the sale of land to Asda) and turn it into revenue. Capital is money that can only be used to buy one-off physical stuff – e.g. buildings and equipment - This is the form that S106 money usually takes. Revenue is money that can only be used to pay wages and run services. Changing capital to revenue will be a challenge that will help us get best When Adelaide Grove was resurfaced at the value. end of last year residents told me that the double yellow lines had not been repainted My next drop-in session at the SeaBreeze outside the Scout Hut. I thought this was an Café will be Thursday 7th January, 9.15am oversight but when I investigated it turned – 10.15am. out that the lines weren’t ‘legal’ as there Until next month, was no Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to enforce them. Now we shall have to await kind regards, this before the lines can be returned and Luisa unfortunately these things tend to take a LONG time. In the meantime please be very careful when approaching the junction I have been speaking to the government in support of our application for Bathing Water Designation. The survey by local residents showed that on average four people bathed per day and this is considered to be quite low. However, in my opinion, the cold and wet summer was not conducive to swimming and should we have had a hot summer the numbers would have been higher.
