Dear Readers Welcome and thank you for picking up a copy of the July issue. June has been a varied month weather wise and the floating bridge or Floaty McFloat Farce as it is now affectionately called is certainly causing problems, many of which are still ongoing - lets hope they get sorted soon!! The IOW Festival has been and gone and the Island is now heading towards carnival season. Many of the towns have their own carnival and you can find a list of them all on page 14. You will also find the ever popular ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 12 and 13. In this issue we have articles from Mr Wally AWOL and Friends and a news update from the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital and 1st East Cowes Sea Scout Group need your help with an online vote, as well as news reports, business editorials and much more. We have some great advertisers offering many different services please keep using them and help to support local businesses and please remember to tell them you saw them advertised here. I hope you all have a great July and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

East Cowes Business Association Summer is well and truly here, and as I write this, the sky is blue and my sunglasses are rarely more than a couple of feet away. Sunshine, the smell of cut grass and sun cream, walks on the beach (perhaps even some paddling) and ice creams, no wonder it’s such a great time of the year! I know only too well how difficult it is to balance work with home life as well as trying to ‘do your bit for the community’, whether this is organising a fund raising event, litter pick or even baking a cake for the school’s PTA, there is so much to do and it can seem like an entirely thankless task at times. I sometimes find myself wondering if sleep really is that important and could I get by on coffee alone. But, there is something that you can do for your community which involves little extra effort: simply use the independent local shops and services, whether this is to buy a gift, birthday card, drain cleaner or a crabbing line, you’ll get to support your local business community without actually doing anything that you wouldn’t do anyway. Social media is full of memes (little pictures with various captions) but one I saw yesterday that simply stated ‘Every time you spend money in a local shop, someone somewhere does a little dance’ – something that probably isn’t true of supermarket shareholders.
Over the last couple of weeks, I designed a couple of posters to be displayed within the Red Funnel terminal building, advertising places to eat. It hadn’t struck me until I was collecting the details of the ECBA members that we have a very diverse range of cuisines to choose from; Indian, Italian, Chinese as well as a couple of traditional fish & chip shops and cafes, all supplying take away options. Next time you can’t face cooking, you don’t need to go further that your own town for inspiration.
I don’t feel that I can write an article without mentioning the floating bridge. As you may recall, ECBA protested against the charges from the start and have been very vocal regarding the delays in the delivery of Floating Bridge 6. We are angry that it has been stated that the designers have worked with the ‘residents and business communities of East Cowes’ as this is clearly not the case – none of us can remember being asked a single question! Like so many residents, ECBA are expecting answers from the IW Council regarding the lack of a fit for purpose floating bridge, it seems that a high tide or low tide and even ‘potential high wind’ has the power to suspend the new, multi-million pound vessel. We’ve been pushing for answers from the IW Council and will give whatever support we can The recent cash mob, organised by Julie Jones-Evans, demonstrated that spending just to the Town Council and our local county a few pounds in a local shop can significantly councillors, to get to the bottom of this. boost both the day’s takings as well as the Check out our Facebook page and Twitter morale of the shop-keeper. As part of the Freemasonry’s 300th anniversary celebrations, the Masonic Charitable Foundation is distributing three million pounds to 300 charities across the country, and the 1st East Cowes Sea Scout Group is one of those selected. Each of the nominated charities will receive a grant, but the public vote will determine how much they receive, ranging from £4,000 to £25,000. Those who want to vote should visit the MCF website mcf.org.uk/vote, select the Hampshire & Isle of Wight page and vote for the charity of their choice. The voting period closes on Monday 31 July.
The Masonic Charitable Foundation obtains all of its funding from Freemasons and their families. It is estimated that half of Freemasonry’s total charitable expenditure of over £33m goes to charities that help people in communities across the country. Michael Wilks, Provincial Grand Master from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Freemasons said: “We are proud to be able to support many charities across Hampshire & Isle of Wight, but in this special 300th anniversary year we want to involve the public, as well as local Freemasons, in deciding which of the nominated charities should benefit most. I urge everyone to visit the website and vote.” 5

Mr Wally AWOL and Friends Mr Wally AWOL and Friends is an Isle of Wight (Cowes based) self funded voluntary organisation which rescues and rehabilitates Wild Birds. It is run by Kay Ounsworth, with help from Donna Henderson, Tracy Lane and Leah Ounsworth. Their aim is to help sick and injured birds back to peak health and get them returned back into the wild once this has been accomplished. They work closely with a fantastic team of veterinary surgeons. If you spot a sick or injured bird, the best course of action is to: 1) Secure the bird in a box with air holes. 2) Give the bird something comfy to nestle on such as tissue, kitchen roll, an old towel or something similar. 3) Place the box with the bird inside in a dark, warm, quiet place while you seek assistance. They welcome calls for advice or to arrange collection. Please call 07765564479 or 01983 247528 or message their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/wallyawol They work almost entirely by bus, so reaching more remote parts of the Island at night time is not always possible. However they are happy to arrange a more convenient meeting place, grab a taxi or advise as necessary. If you would like to help keep Wally AWOL running smoothly, Pets with Hart in Newport (opposite Hurst) happily accept donations for them and they also have an Amazon Wish List: Wally AWOL Wish List Link: www.amazon.co.uk/registry/wishlist/ C0X58RG47PSS

Town Mayor Report for East Cowes From Peter Lloyd (Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor)
First let me introduce myself, I am Peter Lloyd and the Town Council have elected me to become your Mayor, doing their bit towards recycling. Cllr. Jane Rann is the new Deputy Mayor. I would like to welcome back some of the councillors who like myself were re-elected, also welcome 2 new members to the Town Council, Bob Packham and Julia Baker-Smith and Simon Walker who has returned after a 4 year absence, contact details for all Town Councillors can be found on the council notice board at the Town Hall.
pedestrian waiting area at the East Cowes side: health and safety issues as well as having to pay ÂŁ1.50 return fare. In response to these concerns and the operational problems there have been public demonstrations held and the Town Council on your behalf has written to SLEP (the funders) also the IWC and its officers asking for them to account for their actions and failings, with this letter I have attached a Public Question document as presented to the Town Council.
The last couple of years have been difficult for the TC with various problems arising, not least a replacement Town Clerk was needed. Margaret Webster had a difficult time as Mayor overseeing the problems and I would like to thank her for her time and efforts in rising to the past challenges.
The leader of the IWC Cllr. David Stewart and the Cabinet member for transport Cllr. Ian Ward and IWC officers would like to attend a joint meeting with representatives of East and West Cowes town councils in the next couple of weeks. I requested that some public and business representation should also to be present at the meeting and I will keep you updated of the outcome in my next report.
The White Elephant of the year award must go to the Floating Bridge, which has been a great disappointment to us all. Delay followed by delay and then when it finally came into operation it ran for a day. It was taken out of service, some remedial works and extra training carried out so that we can enjoy a long trouble free service, back in service, service suspended again. It run aground, could this be due to the new bridge being longer, wider and heavier therefore catching the tidal drag more? Tighter chains maybe? But this would mean less depth of water over the chains meaning boats would be unable to navigate past the bridge. The Floating bridge is a vital link between the two towns and the list of failings is becoming longer. The effect on the local economy: the
The TC has received a message from a member of the public about damage to play equipment at one of our play areas. Someone had tried to remove a part of the equipment and also attempted to light a fire inside it, their actions cause slight injury to a child, please can I urge you all to keep an eye out and report any vandalism in the town to the Town Council and or the Police using their 101 number, thank you. The Town now has two new defibrillators now up and running and both are accessible by the public at any time. One is located at the front of the Town Hall and the other at Shoreside Cafe on the Esplanade.

A lot has been happening at the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital since our last update. We had a record number of applications in 2016 for funds for equipment and resources from various parts of the Hospital We were able to make a large number of grants which will enhance the already excellent care and service we Islanders get from St Mary’s. The items have been ordered and are coming into use daily. Examples of what we were able to provide are monitoring equipment for community midwives, traction splints, transfer hoists for stroke patients, warming equipment for hypothermia cases dealt with by ambulances, dementia friendly crockery, and learning resources for children with special needs. We also looked after our staff with some exercise equipment and refurbishing a rest room. We have taken the opportunity to give a fresh look to our branding and have launched a new website. Check it out at www.fosmiow.co.uk. We are now communicating regularly on Facebook and gradually building up a healthy following there. It is important to let people know what we are doing for the Hospital and how they can help us to do it. Our amazing volunteers are running our friendly cafe and well stocked shop in the Hospital foyer. And we now have an outlet in the Health and Wellbeing Centre in Ryde. With the Laidlaw cafe and the daily ward trolley, that gives us five outlets to look after so if you have some time to spare to volunteer, please do contact us through the website or ring our office on 534405.
At a cost of £3,000, the Friends have provided 20 traction splints for the ambulances, to be used to relieve excruciating pain from certain leg fractures. Paramedic Mike Wigley (pictured) explained that essential pre-hospital treatment for someone suffering a mid-shaft femur fracture is to relieve the pain through a combination of pain relief and splintage.
Although legacies and donations are very important to us, our cafes and shop are our main source of income, and we do see these facilities as being a very important part of our service to the hospital. The coffee and tea is good and reasonably priced and there is a range of sandwiches and snacks. We have “Splintage is particularly important, as joined the Hospital initiative to promote less separating the fracture bone fragments sugary food and drinks and our customers are provides significant pain relief and reassurgetting used to that. Our lovely staff have a ance for the patient,” he said. “If a bone is caring attitude and always reach out to those shattered in half the leg muscles immediately in the cafe who are struggling. This is not pull the bones together, and it really hurts.” always physically, as inevitably we meet many people who have had bad news or who are worried about a loved one. We work closely with the Hospital to make sure that our funds really do make a difference to patients, staff and the Island community and we enjoy great support from the Trust, to help us to help them. So if you can help us in any way, do get in touch via the website or by ringing the number above. We would love to hear from you.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love It’s certainly been a busy month working to support the people of East Cowes. I hope those of you who attended the Festival had fun.
positive changes not only to the bridge and it’s structural issues, but to seek to remove the unfair foot passenger stealth tax charges.
I have met with Red Funnel directors to establish a working relationship and we discussed how we might spruce up the area controlled by them and their plans for the future. The Red Funnel planning enquiry starts on 18th July here on the Island. Keep an eye open for more information in the press.
There is no doubt in my mind, it’s not only affecting business trade but preventing the free movement of local people on both sides of the river. I for instance, no longer cross the river to wander and browse in Cowes. The £1.50 it costs me and others, can be better spent. I shall keep pressing for solutions to the many issues caused by the Floating Bridge.
The East Cowes Business Association, Town Council, local activists and towns people have all been working together to address and protest about the many concerns and issues raised by the implementation of the new floating bridge. The point of this is to bring about the necessary changes to improve and make safer this essential service. There has been a total lack of proper and meaningful consultation and much of the bridges design layout has been imposed upon us. Our towns people have joined together in one voice to ensure we are heard loud and clear at county hall. We want to know why it has all gone so wrong when there was clear evidence presented by towns people and warnings given back in 2014. It’s turned into a fiasco and a catalogue of errors which I have directly raised with the new ruling conservative group, Cllr David Stuart and Ian Ward. I have also met with Kevin Burton of Island Roads to discuss the road safety scheme. What matters now is that we continue to work as a community to influence and make 16
I was invited to attend the scrutiny meeting on the 13th June and it has emerged that the Floating bridge will be suspended for a couple of hours every day during low tide and this will definitely continue for the remainder of June. You can get more information at the IW Council website. The ticket travel charge for both vehicles and foot passengers is also suspended until the 2nd July. A full enquiry will take place. In other news the Albany pumping station repairs are only a temporary fix to the breakdown of the pumps. New pumps are on order and it’s looking like the temporary fix is here for most of the summer? I have been in contact with Southern Water and the Cowes Harbour Commission. Again I have raised concerns about sewerage being discharged into the sea creating a stench and health risk. I have reported this to the Health Commission and ask you to keep reporting it to The Environment agency and the Public Health.
News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love I’m pleased to say that the suns out and everyone is enjoying the East Cowes Esplanade where some additional enhancements are about to be implemented by your town council. There will be “No Parking” on the Esplanade field once the new seating and bollards have been placed on the green. It’s a green not a car park and that’s the way we would like to keep it. A big Thank you to our town councils efforts in this matter. We are all still on the case about the landslip too and while it looks cleaner there is still much yet to be done. I have raised this matter with Island Roads and the new cabinet officer Ian Ward. Please also help support your local town businesses especially those small shops, many of which, have struggled as a result of the closure of the floating bridge. We need to keep our High Street alive so if you can spend just a few pounds in some of our High Street shops, that will be very much appreciated to help keep them going. Don’t forget we now have defibrillators located at the town hall and at the Shoreside Cafe. They are for use on people who you might think are having a cardiac arrest. Our town Clerk has been instrumental in leasing and implementing this essential service. Very well done to Amanda our Town Clerk. As you can see work has started on the outdoor gym near the Pavilion. This is due to the hard work of your town council and we look forward to it opening later this year.

East Cowes Commemorative Tapestry 2019 In 2019, it will be the 200th Anniversary of Queen Victoria’s & Prince Albert’s birthdays. It may be a good time to be part of a larger project to record this event and immortalise other wonderful achievements of which this town can be very proud. I envisage that this could be through a collective community effort, regardless of age, gender and ability.

I was involved, in the late 80’s, in the making of the Nursling & Rownhams Village contribution to the Test Valley Tapestry. In the first instance, I would like to be contacted by anyone who is vaguely interested in brainstorming ideas of what may be included in this work. It could be that you may be interested in the social, industrial and/or the innovative history within the last 200 years and beyond. It could be that the schools within East Cowes would like to be involved. I know one village in the Test Valley where every pupil put in a couple of stitches into their contribution. We will need: • artists / designers to develop the coloured visual images for tracing onto canvasses. • some crafts / needlewomen / men who can develop the individual canvasses and show others how to do the future stitches. • willing pairs of hands to do a little or a lot, whatever suits them best. It may appeal to, already formed groups such as WI, Church Groups, PTA’s, Toddler Groups etc to work together whilst being mindful of the eventual outcome. Let’s do something positive and memorable together for East Cowes. Please contact me, Lin Kemp by email: linkemp51@hotmail.com or ring 01983 717758.
