As I write this it definitely feels like summer is here. The sun has been out all week and there is talk of a mini heatwave in the next couple of days. I hope by the time you read this the sun is still putting in a daily appearance.

The Telephone: 01983 408716 Mobile: 07816 545283 Email: td.decors@hotmail.co.uk www.tddecors.co.uk festival has been and gone and the island is playing host to many visitors, some popping over for the first time and others are regulars with many of them wishing they could make this their permanent home. I often wonder if by having all this beauty right on our doorstep and under our noses that we don’t appreciate it as much as we should do. What do you think?

I mentioned in last month’s issue that with one thing and another I had not had the chance to get on my bike and enjoy the outdoors, well... that is no longer relevant as I have been all over the island exploring all the nooks and crannies and sampling everything the island has to offer. Being on two wheels is like being set free and yes, it is an electric assist bike, but I still have to pedal on the flat and up hills. It is amazing how many other people you get to chat with that are either cycling, walking or enjoying one of our local tearooms. I’ve also lost count of the times I have cycled past a house and got the familiar aroma of a sausage on a barbeque... why is it that other people’s burnt sausages always smell better than your own? I hope you enjoy this month’s community magazine, there is lots to read about, including our regular news reports, puzzle section, Dates for your Diary, local advertisers and much more including a great piece about Isle of Wight Swifts. I hope you all have a lovely July and I hope we can meet up again next month and please if you have any community news to share, please let me know so I can share with other readers.

‘Walkabout’ with Michael Paler Contact Details:- 07483251960 or email michaelpaler@btinternet.com G’day hope you are all keeping well and enjoyed the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations which were a great success all over the Island, it was good to see everyone out in the good weather. The East Cowes Town Crafters decorated the town in a spectacular display, well done to everyone and the East Cowes fire crew who helped put up the decorations. The jubilee was a once in a lifetime event that will be remembered by everyone. The beacon lighting in East Cowes and Cowes had a great turnout on the first day of the celebrations. The Cowes beacon lighting had people from East Cowes in the Medina Community Choir and Becky Langridge from East Cowes was also taking part. Mike Christie from G4 was performing his Heartbeat of our Nation song and has been asked to compose a song for the Tour of Britain final stage 8 to be held in September on the Isle of Wight. More details next month. Parties in parks and streets and a BBQ at Whippingham Church hall was full of people enjoying the good weather. It was good to see the locals who will be holding their Indonesian Independence Day celebrations to be held on 28th August 2022 at East Cowes Town Hall. Last year’s event was private and when people knew about the event they asked if it could be put on this year for a public day and they said yes and we are looking forward to welcoming them back. I also attended the Business and community leaders, potential investors, education providers, local government and other interested parties for the Solent Summit, an event to mark the launch of the Solent Freeport, on Wednesday 8 June at Horizon Cruise Terminal in Southampton. To learn more about the Freeport’s sites and the opportunities they will drive across innovation and green growth; providing a centre of excellence in green skills and jobs to ensure local communities, and in particular young people, can benefit from opportunities created also on the Island.

‘Walkabout’ with Michael Paler If you are out Freshwater Bay way you may come across Sandra Hinchliffe who is in training to swim the Channel next month with a relay team. She is swimming to raise money for a charity called Swim Tayka that helps children learn to swim and water safety, good luck to you all and stay safe. Take care of yourselves and see you out and about.

Historical Events and Interesting Facts for July As we’re at the beginning of the second half of the year, it’s a great time to start working on any of those new year’s resolutions that you’ve put off attempting for the first half of the year! In early July, a period of time called the “dog days of summer” begins. Historically they were observed within Ancient Roman and Greek astrology and were connected with bad luck, mad dog attacks, unexpected thunderstorms, heat, and drought. They gained their name as “dog days” as they were connected with the star Sirius, which is part of the Canis Major (Greater Dog) star system. Nowadays, “the dog days” refers to when the hottest days of summer begin. It was in July that the rabies vaccine was first successfully given to a patient. The French microbiologist Louis Pasteur administered the vaccine to a nine-year-old called Joseph Meister on July 6, 1885. The child had been bitten by a rabid dog, and Louis Pasteur, unsure whether the vaccine would be successful, decided it was worth testing. Fortunately for the boy, it worked! The Anglo-Saxons had multiple names for the month of July, including Maed-monath and Hey-monath. Respectively, these translated into “the flowering of meadows” and “hay month.” On July 25, 1909, Louis Bleriot became the first man to fly an aircraft from one country to another successfully. He took off from the coast of France and landed across the channel near Dover. July has two birth flowers – the water lily and delphinium also known as the larkspur. The water lily is a symbol of a pure heart, while the larkspur (especially its white form) represents the lightness of the heart. The birthstone of July is the ruby, considered by many to be the king of gems. At one point in time, it was considered to protect warriors on the field of battle if it was embedded in their armour. Nowadays, as a birthstone, it’s said to protect against evil. July was an important time for the space race of the ’60s. The first crewed mission to the moon, the Apollo 11 Mission, launched on July 16, 1969. Four days later, on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong made history by taking the first step on the moon while declaring, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind!”. July 16, 1945, was another big day for the world and a step down a very dark period of history. It was on this day in Alamogordo, New Mexico, that the first atomic bomb was detonated. The bomb was called “Fat Boy,” and its explosion sure was fat – the mushroom cloud was 41,000 feet (12.5 kilometres) high! 8

A few scams to share with you this month from Trading Standards. • The coronavirus scams continue, we are receiving regular reports of texts allegedly from the NHS stating that you’ve been in contact with somebody who has tested positive for covid and you need to do a PCR test. You are told to click on a link to order one – DON’T click on the link this is a SCAM. There are no longer any restrictions or testing in place and certainly no track and trace! • Residents have reported calls from internet providers saying that there is a problem with your broadband and they want to update the software on your router. From joy’s humble crumble kitchen The Big Food Waste - We are ranked 3rd in the world for this after the US and China. Reducing food waste is one of the most important things we all can do to reverse global warming. Perhaps we are unaware of its (peelings) healthy reusable properties - here are some ideas to put them on your plate thereby not only saving money but each one of us playing a small part in restoring our planet’s health. CRUNCHY VEGGIE CRISPS

Spread potato, carrot, parsnip and beetroot peelings on a baking sheet and toss with oil. Bake in the oven at 200°c for 15 minutes until crisp and golden. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with salt and any spices you wish to add.

***************************

CHEESE DIP for Veggie Crisps 75g mayonnaise and 75g yogurt/creme fraiche or sour cream - 50g grated cheese (option to add a little finely chopped onion and/or a grated clove of garlic). Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and season. (add a splash of water to loosen if needed). Or you can use plain mayo, tomato or sweet chilli sauces too dip.

*************************** VEGETABLE SMOOTHIE.

You can easily process leftover washed veggie scraps (those which you can eat raw) into a healthy smoothie. Mix together using a blender adding some water, plus any additional fruits, herbs, spices or a bit of ginger according to taste.

VEGETABLE STOCK POT.

Take piles of washed peels plus any cut offs, chop roughly and place into a pot and cover with water - add a few extra herbs, seasoning and simmer for about 20 minutes - strain and you’re done!

***************************

BROCCOLI STEM SLAW Shred up some peeled broccoli stalks, carrots and onion. Drizzle on your favourite dressing and serve.

***************************

BROCCOLI & CAULI PUREE This tasty dish uses chopped broccoli, cabbage or cauliflower stalks and some leaves. Steam or boil them until soft, then puree and season. The prefect side dish.

TOP TIP Add a handful of lemon peelings to a kettle with limescale - boil and let it stand for a good while. Put orange or lemon peel in a spray bottle with white vinegar. Makes an amazing all purpose cleaner

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love What a fantastic Platinum Jubilee we had in and around our town and the festival weekend has also started well. A massive thank you to everyone involved in the planning, delivering, funding and decorating of our town for Jubilee. It was a true joy to see everyone enjoying the events and the decorations. A lot of effort went into the planning and delivery of these events, and I want to thank East Cowes Town Councillors, The Crafters, Coast to Castle Estate Agents for sorting out the stage and entertainment for the picnic and for singing for us at the lighting of the beacon. Red funnel for their funding contribution, Stage Gear, performers and musicians, litter pickers, council staff, cake makers and those who decorated their homes and dressed up. Our small town celebrated the service given to our people by HM Queen Elizabeth and her devotion and commitment to serve her people. Her Majesty has certainly seen changes in all things during her life and so has our town and Island as it evolves and changes. Thank you to everyone and we look forward to seeing future events occurring in and around our town? There were a huge number of requests for a future festival and events and your town council did feel inspired by your comments and interactions. The East Cowes Esplanade Community Landslip project, led by Sharon Lake, has been a huge success. We didn’t quite get an event together for the opening of it but what a wonderful effort has occurred. We first started trying to take action to address the slip in 2016 and it soon became apparent that the then, and subsequent leadership of Isle of Wight Council had little appetite to take any action, and so a very long process involving your town council, community

action and others began to bring about improvements. We intend that this is only the first part of the regeneration of this area and Councillor Lake has already received requests by local people to sponsor additional gabion baskets and benches for phase two of the project. If you would like to sponsor a Gabion or basket you can email Cllr Sharon Lake at: cllr.s.lake@eastcowestowncouncil. co.uk. The next step will be to conduct the necessary requirements of the feasibility study for the area. This is not a quick fix process, but work will continue. The Waterfront and Venture Quay regeneration continues to make progress. The Columbine Building windows are now being installed as you will have noticed, and this effectively opens up additional space within the building to facilitate both new workspaces for Wight Shipyard and new commercial areas for letting out. It is intended this will bring new jobs and business to East Cowes. UKSA are investing alongside IWC into the refurbishing of the Barracks Building. It will become a new area for training and a hostel for young people as they learn new water craft skills. The Maresfield car park is only a temporary car park and Isle of Wight Council will be charging for its use. The Council has put out calls for expressions of interest in building housing accommodation on that land as is required by the terms and conditions of its purchase for Homes England. Personally, speaking I would prefer to see an extra ‘Care Facility’ which enables better living and support for our community. We are duty bound to build housing in that area. continued over the page

News Report from Cllr Karl Love continued The Food Pantry located at the Pavilion is experiencing a high and growing use. While it is currently an essential service, I find it abhorrent that we should need such facilities to support people in this day and age when we are the world’s 5th richest Nation. Food Banks and Pantries are a necessary evil in my mind, and we should be seeking as a nation to secure a liveable minimum wage and social services which enables people to live and work in their own right without having fear from poverty or seeking support. The sooner we can banish these services from society and provide better paid jobs the better it will be for everyone. I’m not against the best intentions of the food banks and pantries and those who operate them. I am against the causes of poverty, and this is where our government must focus its attention to improve society for us all. Looking forward we are hoping to open the East Side Curve (attached to the Town Hall) in the very near future and with its new community facilities and Library services. It will also have a small meeting room available for hire and coffee making facilities. I will keep you informed of the progress. There is still no news of the Norris Castle application which is still making its way through the process of planning. The town council employed a consultant to advise them given the scale of the application and concluded that there were significant concerns about the application on a number of fronts. Not least the access along the esplanade which is totally unsuitable. The works to be done on the restoration and significant development areas are also questionable in so many different ways. Bob Seely MP states he gives his support to the

concerns of Historic England who are the experts in their field and are less than convinced of the merits of this application. It will cause significant harm to the heritage assets and therefore I will continue to object as do the majority of the people in our town. The Frank James Hospital is in receivership. I Have raised concerns about the Downes House former doctors’ surgery. I did this with council officers and then it was reported in the press. The IWC is considering taking action against the developers as it lies empty and in a deteriorating condition. This area could be used to construct affordable housing for local people. I’m doing everything I can, but it is not an easy road to tread. We are hoping that we might see some fireworks this year for Cowes Week, but it’s not yet been confirmed however a new sponsor has been found for the racing events which I hope will bring a muchneeded distraction for all the current economic concerns. It is the intention of the Town council to create a Community Orchard at the bottom of the Jubilee Recreation ground and work is hoped to commence in Autumn when the trees have a better chance of survival after planting. There is a lot of activity occurring in our town at this time instigated by an energetic town council. Take care all and have a fun summer using all our town’s amenities and parklands. Please slap on that sunscreen and drink lots of water when out enjoying the sun. Thank you to all our voluntary services for commitment and work. 15

Can You Help our Isle of Wight Swifts? by iWatchWildlife Swifts are amazing and beautiful birds. The sound and sight of them racing and screaming over our rooftops is an exhilarating and essential part of summer on the Island. However, Swifts are now on the Red List of species threatened with extinction - they are in serious trouble. Loss of nest sites is by far the major contributor, though falls in the populations of insects Swifts eat may also play a part. Preserving existing nest sites and providing new nest sites is crucial if we are to prevent Swifts becoming extinct in the UK. Thousands of new nest sites are needed each year just to halt the decline and thanks to Hampshire Swifts, we have an opportunity to help the Isle of Wight’s population of breeding swifts. Hampshire Swifts can build new boxes and install them for no more than £40.00 per box. This is a fantastic deal as installation height needs to ideally be a minimum of 5 metres above ground level and is therefore probably best left to the professionals! Earlier this year, the first round of 15 boxes were successfully installed on properties across the Island with the next batch planned at the end of the summer once the birds have left our skies. Swift boxes being installed by Tim and Andy iWatchWildlife are co-ordinating the registration by Claire Hector effort here on the Island, so if you are interested in having a box/es installed on your property then please do get in touch at iwatchwildlife@gmail.com with your name, postal address and contact email preferably. Hampshire Swifts can then check your property online for suitability.

Even better is if you and a group of neighbours can get together and have boxes installed as Swifts are social birds and tend to prefer to nest with others. iWatchWildlife is the Island’s species recording project led by the Isle of Wight Natural History & Archaeological Society. 16
