Welcome to the June issue which marks the beginning of Summer. There is no better place to spend sunny days and long evenings than on our island with so much to see and surrounded by beautiful beaches and countryside.

This issue also marks that we are halfway through the year already. How is your year going so far? Did you set yourself plans at the beginning of the year and have they happened or are they on the back burner? One of my plans this year was to spend more time outdoors, having great adventures on my bike, exploring the island on two wheels, and enjoying regular stops at local cafes and tearooms... sadly due to one thing and another this hasn’t happened so far, but I am not giving up and I hope to have those two wheels in motion very soon.

Probably the biggest news for June is the adrian.kensit@btinternet.com Platinum Jubilee - it seems that communities across the island are coming together and have been planning all types of events, from picnics in the park, to crafts and markets, live music, and much more. If you are holding a street party, I hope you have a great day and feel free to send me any pictures of your event. This month’s issue is packed as normal, with news, advertisers, puzzles, and features. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and look forward to catching up with you again next month, until then have a fabulous June.

From joy’s humble
crumble kitchen
In this issue we continue to look and find ways of helping each other along the difficult path that today’s living brings to so many of us. This month is about feeding the family for under £3 and these recipes will hopefully become a firm favourite. Next month we will be looking at ways to reduce food waste by making your vegetables go further, with suggestions for making edible use of peelings and skins.
TOP TIP Use the kettle to boil water quickly and transfer to pan on hob for boiling vegetables and pasta.
TOP TIP
Get rid of ants with cucumber peel – place strips of peel along their entry point – they don’t like it – not toxic, not expensive.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love There is a great deal of news to cram into this month’s edition and I apologise if I miss any of it. HM Queen Elizabeth Jubilee has arrived, and the town council and our crafters have been working incredibly hard to create a colourful wonderful event for everyone to participate and enjoy. We are truly thankful for all their efforts in creating decorations for our town. It’s been an exciting start to summer and how lucky we are to have had such a sunny weekend for the commemoration and remembrance of our townspeople who suffered the horrid loss of life on the 4th & 5th May 1942. The friends of the Blyskawica went the extra mile this year creating many town events alongside that of Cowes to commemorate and remember those who lost their lives or were injured. There were many highlights from the weekend including the wonderful colourful Dancing by the Polish community and children. The Exhibition in the Town Hall was the result of many months of preparation and planning by the Heritage Centre along with the town Blitz walk. The Planning application for Kingstone Marine for a large marine workshop development is still undetermined at this time but I am in favour of its construction which again brings important jobs. The development proposal is on the old East Cowes Gravel extraction yard at Kingstone marine and inside the footprint of the marina yard. The Floating Bridge is back and crawling its way across the river at this time. You may have noticed the new cycle lane with removable posts. These posts provide space for events as there seems to be lots of events occurring these days which bring much needed tourism to our island and aid our 6
recovery. Mediation continues between Isle of Wight Council and the insurance companies of the parties involved with the Floating Bridges construction and designers. As I have stated before there is no quick fix, but we are moving in the right direction. Work continues to smarten up the esplanade albeit a little slow. A great deal of town funding has been spent, out of sight, on the restoration of the paddling pool to ensure its continuation long into the future. Much of the pipe works have been replaced and the pumping equipment too. On the surface nothing has changed but its Victorian workings have now all been replaced. The esplanade Car Park has been resurfaced creating new accessibility parking spaces, a motor bike park area and generally making a better appearance. The parking remains free of charge. The town councillors are united in representing your views resisting the intentions of the Norris Castle Developers to create access from our esplanade. Access is only one concern of local people within the planning application. I support the points made by Historic England and many other notable qualified comments within the online planning portal. This application is simply not appropriate or fitting for an area with three grade one listed assets and eight grade two listings. Town councillors have visited the site and made a contribution to the consultations. I will not be silent in this matter and in representing the views of those who elected me. In my view the castle can host a small environment friendly bespoke hotel complex using all its assets sympathetically. However, this current proposal simply is overbearing and seeks to build virtually
News Report from Cllr Karl Love continued in every corner of the estate. It is not as described by this developer, the only way forward. We now wait to see the outcome of the planning application. I wanted to assure residents that our council has listened to your views and taken qualified planning advice from a reputable planning consultant. A great deal of regeneration activity is occurring in our town at this time including the Barracks which we visited a few weeks ago to discuss plans for its future. The Boat Museum is also expanding and has exciting plans for the future. We all hold our breath again for the impacts of the summer traffic on our town. With this in mind the council has agreed to implement its own carbon monoxide monitoring initiative so we have a town baseline, against which we can monitor and collect evidence to help improve air quality and thus help protect our local residents. I continue to object to Red Funnels use of the side exit in Castle street which is dangerous. Whilst the slipway has a gate on it in Dover Road it is still open for use, but I do advise caution as it is in a fully flowing river location and directly in the pathway of the Ferry. It is dangerous for those who are inexperienced in watercraft skills but does provide deep water access. The gate is not locked. Some sections of York Avenue have been resurfaced and I did ask Island Roads about the resurfacing of the esplanade. It is not in this year’s programme of work, but I will press for it to be in the next. The results of the residents’ parking scheme proposals, for some of our town streets, are not yet available at the time of printing this report. If sufficient residents request a parking scheme it is possible to consider
a survey which residents can vote on and determine. One can request a consideration by contacting the council’s parking manager at County Hall by email or in writing. The new community hub being built alongside the Town Hall is to be named the East-Side Curve and will be opened later this year. The first of 5 Community Pantry’s has been opened in East Cowes at the Pavilion Centre by Community Spirited. It is a wonderful concept, but I do have concerns about what lies behind it, Poverty. The Pantry is a good response and helpful, but I am distressed by the causes of Poverty and the need for such initiatives today. Finally, I wanted to thank all the volunteers who have worked incredibly hard to help gather and donate items to the Ukraine appeal. I assure you that they are all being put to good use in Moldova and reaching the people of Ukraine as I saw during my recent visit. Thank you to MAD-Aid for providing the infrastructure and using its networks and contacts to ship our island aid. I have seen the most fantastic international work which they do in Moldova and the respect given to MAD-Aid by the Moldovan and Ukraine Government. They are a nation living in fear of what might become of them in this conflict, but their generosity and kindness is plain to see in how they, with limited recourse, are helping the people of Moldova. Riscani and another small town Mihaileni have expressed a desire to twin without community. I will explore this when time allows with you and others. I wish you all a very Happy Jubilee weekend and look forward to seeing you in the town.

Interesting Facts and Historical Events for June June is a time when summer is really starting to get into full swing! Every day lasts just that little bit longer. There are multiple theories as to what the month of June was named after. One theory is that it was named after the Roman goddess of marriage, Juno. Another theory is that its name originates from the Latin word iuniores, which translates into “younger ones”. Yet another possibility is that the month was named after Lucius Junius Brutus, the founder of the Roman Republic. June was called ‘sera’ monath by the Anglo-Saxons, which translated into “dry month”. June used to be the fourth month in the year. Before Julius Caesar came to power, the calendar year only had 10 months. In 46 BC he created the Julian calendar by adding two more months to the year, which made June the sixth month. No other month in the year begins on the same day of the week as June. June has both the longest and the shortest day of the year ( June 21st), and depends on whether you live in the Northern or Southern hemisphere. Television licences were issued in Britain for the first time on 1 June 1946; they cost £2 If you were born on or before June 20th, then you’re a Gemini. Geminis are said to be passionate, adaptable, and smart. If you’re born on or after the 21st of June, though, then you have the Cancer star sign. Those born under this sign are said to be loyal friends with great emotional depth. June was apparently not very popular with William Shakespeare, as it was only referenced in two of his famous plays – Cleopatra, and Henry IV. The birth flowers of June are the honeysuckle and the rose. Both of these flowers are symbols of all things relating to love, desire, generosity, and affection. If you’re a big fan of tennis Wimbledon begins on June 27th. June has three birthstones – alexandrite, moonstone, and pearl. Alexandrite is said to represent longevity and health. Moonstones are said to bring good luck and are associated with love and passion. Finally, pearls, the main birthstones of June represent purity and faith. June 3rd, 1937, The Duke of Windsor married Wallis Warfield Simpson in Monts, France. As King Edward VIII, he had abdicated the British Throne in December of 1936 amid tremendous controversy to marry Wallis Simpson, an American who had been divorced. Following the wedding, the couple lived in France and had minimal contact with the British Royal family. The Duke died in Paris on May 28th 1972 and was buried near Windsor Castle. 8

‘Walkabout’ with Michael Paler Contact Details:- 07483251960 or email michaelpaler@btinternet.com G’Day what a great couple of weeks with the 80th Anniversary of the Defence of Cowes and East Cowes by the Polish Navy destroyer ORP Błyskawica on 4/5th May 1942. ‘Cowes Blitz’ was a great success and The Friends of ORP Blyskawica and the East Cowes Heritage Centre with the support of Red Funnel. Ken Wheeler had produced a film of memoirs of people that lived in East Cowes. The ORP Wodnik Polish Navy training ship came over for the celebrations. The captain and crew attended many functions that took place. The Granddaughter and Great Grandson also attended from Australia for their first trip to this side of the world. The Polish Ambassador also opened the Polish Consulate in Cowes, he was here for the 80th Anniversary Commemoration of the Defence of Cowes. I was pleased to see people from all parts of the Island and mainland with stories of relations who had links to ships and crews who wished to return. Everyone left with happy memories especially after the 1940 Dance at the East Cowes Town Hall.
‘Walkabout’ with Michael Paler After a full week of events, I was Invited to The Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace which was a nice surprise even though it rained all day. East Cowes held its first market in the town hall which was a good start with more to come in the future. Riverfest returned to Newport Harbour for the first time since the pandemic with large crowds on a good day in the sunshine. There was a May Fair at St Mildred’s Church Hall, Whippingham with many stalls and a dog show which is always a crowd pleaser. Jane at Community Spirited opened the Food Pantry at Vectis Road with many people signing up for membership. So that was all last month now for Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. There will be many events all over the Island. East Cowes and Cowes will start off on the 2nd of June with Beacon Lighting ceremonies with the Culver Down being the first to start the national lighting event there will be BBC live coverage all over the Country and Commonwealth. East Cowes will be holding events over the 4 days which can be found within this publication, on the Council website or posters. Cowes will have the Beacon lighting on the Parade Bandstand from 7pm. Look forward to seeing you all out and about and enjoy the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. 13
