The weather over the last month has been a good mixture of wind and rain. Our lovely Island took a battering from storm Imogen recently but we survived and surprisingly there was very little damage. In this months issue you will find the ‘Dates for your Diary’ on page 5 and we have teamed up with Lost Pets IOW in an attempt to reunite missing pets with their owners and you will find more information on this on page 8. The pets missing are from different areas on the Island so please spread the word to family and friends. We have some great advertisers and please keep using their services and remember to tell them you saw them advertised here. I hope you all have a lovely Easter and remember to eat plenty of chocolate!!!! Until next month...

Movement Growing Against Oil and Gas Extraction on the Island Licenses awarded for oil and gas drilling on the Island In December 2015 a license was awarded to UK Oil and Gas Investments (UKOG) and Solo Oil to explore for oil in a 200 sq km area on the Isle of Wight. This decision came just days after the close of COP21, the historic United Nations Climate Change Conference that resulted in a historic agreement by 195 countries to tackle climate change. To keep to this commitment and safeguard our future we must keep fossil fuels underground, meaning no new oil and gas wells, not here, not anywhere.

significant potential is the M-prospect, an offshore site near Compton Bay. A place dear to the hearts of many islanders, more than 130 people came together on January 31st, 2016 at Hanover Point to demonstrate our opposition to this project and others around the world. The gathering was the lead story that night on BBC South Today! Next public meeting - We are holding a public informational meeting at Yarmouth Community Hall on March 3rd, 7-9pm. I am writing this the day after the ECBA Pancake Race, and have to say despite all of the red tape and hoops that we had to jump through (including writing a risk assessment detailing how we would clean a pancake off the floor!) I have to say how pleased we were that this event was so well supported, not only by our two local schools, Holy Cross and Queensgate, but that so many parents, grandparents and friends took the time to watch and cheer. There are too many people to thank individually, but a big thank you should go to the children who waited patiently for their turn, and those who cheered on their classmates (and teaching staff!) speaking as a parent, I was really proud and can’t wait for next year. Thanks to all of our members, who ultimately made this event possible through paying their membership fees. The result was incredibly close, but Holy Cross won the shield by just two medals! Will they be able to defend the shield next year?

We have a monthly e-newsletter and we encourage our members to let us have any news stories or upcoming promotions so we can advertise it to everyone. We use both Twitter and Facebook to promote local businesses, events and news; our website details, our members and we attend town council meetings every month to represent our business community, as well as working with many other local groups. Parkside Pavillion You may remember the article in the December issue about Community Action Isle of Wight taking over the former Pavilion site at Victoria recreation to turn it into a central community hub and drop-in café. I was very lucky to receive an invite from Jane Goddard to visit the pavilion to see how far they have come in just a couple of months. Upon arrival at what is now known at Parkside Pavilion I remembered what it was like before, albeit the outside is still the same as work has yet to begin on this but I was totally amazed at the transformation that has happened within the four walls. Completely gutted and rebuilt the Parkside Pavilion is now a warm and inviting modern place. With newly plastered and painted walls, all new woodwork, windows and flooring which includes a main hall, side rooms, office, kitchen and toilet facilities. It is classy but comfortable with bright new modern tables and comfortable chairs and the walls are soon to be adorned with artwork from local artists. Community Spirited have already moved in awaiting the official opening sometime in March. The idea of a community café is already in place and this will be open on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday for hot and cold drinks and light snacks such as jacket potatoes, soup, sandwiches and these will all be reasonably priced.

transformed and there are plans for this to be incorporated in events being led by youth organisations. Jane has stressed how important it is for this place to be user led so will therefore need input from users and people in the community as to what you would like and how you would like the facilities to be used to bring the community together. The main room, kitchen and side rooms are also available for hire and will make the ideal place for birthday and celebration parties, business meetings or for local groups. Whether it’s a knit and natter group, low impact exercise class, craft classes or somewhere just to hold a meeting then Jane and the team will be able to assist. There are plans in the pipeline to offer dementia related sessions which will give support to sufferers and their carers. They are also looking for volunteers to help run the café and if you are interested contact Jane on 280621 or 07747046202 for more information. As mentioned before the outside needs some TLC just like the inside has already received and they are putting out a special plea to the community for anyone to contact them if they are able to help in any way at all.

It is so nice to see a building being brought back to life and even more so that it is for the community and will help a variety of people along the way whether you are volunteering a few hours of your time or you become a user and can benefit from The Parkside Pavilion also has a computer room the local project which is being bought to East with computers already installed for users to Cowes by Community Action Isle of Wight in use free of charge. The kitchen has been partnership with Community Spirited. 13

The consultation period for the Red Funnel planning application is now finished and a report will be written for consideration by the Planning Committee in By the time you read this our MP will have the next month or so. I would welcome your voted on the proposed cuts to Council funding thoughts to make sure that I am aware of all and the Isle of Wight Council’s Budget for views, both for and against. 2016/17 will have been set with an expected £17.4 million of savings necessary. Even the Meetings have been had with those proposed 2.99% council tax rise won’t cover businesses in East Cowes who may have the increased expenses in Adult Social Care to vacate their current premises at Trinity with the introduction of the Living Wage – a Wharf/Columbine/Venture Quays to try and new minimum wage of £7.20 per hour. Deep water access is but puts further strain on the council budget. required by some and this has been one of the main objections to the proposed marshalling The Leader of the Council and Andrew Turner yard replacing occupied industrial buildings. MP have been working together to get acceptance that the Island is ‘unique’. The Good news is that I am told that the new current funding formula does not take into Floating Bridge may soon start construction account the fact that we are an Island, or that and from the designs I have seen so far it may we have a high proportion of older people be very modern, with a lot of glass to improve – both things causing costs to be higher than views. News Update from Cllr Julia Baker-Smith of Whippingham and Osborne Ward Email: julia.baker-smith@iow.gov.uk Tel 07960146913 After a long wait it is wonderful to finally see the former Pavilion on Vectis Road spring back into life as the Parkside Pavilion. I’d like to thank everyone at Community Spirited for their hard work and perseverance bringing this project forward. The building has been given a new lease of life thanks to Community Action Isle of Wight and funding from the Isle of Wight Council. I look forward to seeing this facility evolve as community groups come forward to make full use of the building. We really want the Parkside Pavilion to be a community led hub and can’t wait to hear your ideas for how it will be used. Keep an eye on the windows for posters advertising new activities for all ages Work is ongoing on proposals to build a new multi-use games area near the skate park and an outdoor gym. I hope to begin a public consultation in the spring to get your input on the positioning and layout. In February I became the Executive Member for Planning and Housing. Having Chaired the Isle of Wight Council’s Planning Committee for the last 18 months through a period of intensive change for the department this is a natural next step. I’m pleased to be able to influence policy to better help you, particularly with the housing issues that many residents in the Whippingham and Osborne Ward face. I have now set my new Surgery dates for the next few months. If you would like to come and see me for a chat about council services or any other issues you think I may be able to help you with please come and see me at the Parkside Pavilion on Vectis Road from 10am-11.30am on Monday March 14th, April 4th and April 25th. You can give me a call any time on 07960146913 or email Julia.baker-smith@iow. gov.uk 18
