Welcome to the March issue of Island Magazines. March signifies the start of Spring and lets hope we start seeing some better weather, perhaps even some sunshine! It looks set to be a busy month with plenty happening across the island and you can find details of events listed in the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 16 and 17. On Sunday 11th March is Mothering Sunday and towards the end of the month on the 30th is the start of Easter. Unfortunately we lose an hour of well earned sleep in March as the clocks go forward the last Sunday of the month, this being the 25th but on the other hand we will start to see the lighter evenings which is always something to be cheerful about. Our front cover stars this month are Viola and Venus and you can read about them on page 9. This months issue is packed with local news and information and as usual we have some great advertising from local businesses. Please help them out by using their services and letting them know you saw them advertised here. I hope you all have a great month and I look forward to catching up with you soon.

East Cowes Business Association News by Simon Craddock I know February was a short month, but we’re flying through this year straight into spring, and I cannot wait! Although not wanting to wish my life away, spring not only means warmer weather and lighter evenings, it means being outdoors more. February was another troublesome month; from the floating bridge to the umbrella tree, it seemed that there was a constant battle being fought in the town. There are plenty more to come I am sure, however one of the many things that I really love about East Cowes is that people get involved, get passionate, vocal and angry about potential impacts to their community. The ECBA AGM is set to take place on 20th March and following a complete mix up and much confusion, I can confirm that it will be held at The Lunch Box, starting at 6pm. We do need to confirm numbers, so please send an e mail (address below) no later than the 13th March. Our committee is sadly lacking in members too, so if you want to shape your business community, please let us know. The committee meets once a month to discuss local issues and progress various events; ECBA represents all aspects of the business community, including shops, beauticians, plumbers, electricians, solicitors, town planners, architects and web designers. The reason we exist is to make sure that the views of the business community are heard; in the last 12 months we have met with the Isle of Wight Council, Town Council and Bob Seely MP, to ensure that local businesses are represented. We cannot do this alone, and your help is vital. If you are a local business person, please join, the more members we have, the more benefits we can bring to our town (you can be as active as you want, attending meetings
is certainly not compulsory!) Our St George’s Celebration is on the 21st April and so far we have secured the swingboats, Strong Arm Hammer, the coconut shy, Morris Dancers, RUG Band, Chain Ferry Gang and lots more including an Ice Cream Van, facepainter, balloon modeller and so the list is growing. We really hope that you’ll join us in Kings Square (from 10am until 3pm). The whole event is paid for by your local business community so all activities are free of charge, so please, return the favour and shop locally, use local tradespeople and services. Some of you might already know that Anne Wilson from the Cooperative Funeral Care is retiring in March. On behalf of ECBA, I would like to say a huge thank you to Anne for all of the support and time that has been given over the years, I really hope to see you and Ray around the town (in between your holidays of course!) Lastly, I would like to wish our newest member Chezabelle’s Florist, Ferry Road, a very warm welcome. For those who have managed to stick to diets (I have not) and don’t want chocolate this Easter, Mothering Sunday or simply for the romantics who think ‘just because’, pop in and see what they can offer. And that’s it, once again I have a run out of room. Have a great month and please remember to use local services, shops and facilities; by spending money in your town, you help your community flourish. PLANNING APPLICATION NORRIS CASTLE The above planning application will be ready for consultation
March 2018
Please be aware that part of the planning application is for an access road along our beloved Seafront, taking in part of the Esplanade (where the original shelter was) and continuing up towards the water works to Norris Castle / Springhill. This road will make a major difference to our Seafront Extra vehicular traffic along the Seafront will create serious safety issues to the children accessing the Play Park and Paddling Pool. The elderly taking a stroll, dog walkers, water activities, tennis, ball games and the Tea Hut. The tranquillity and safety of recreational activities in a
CONSERVATION AREA
will most definitely be impeded and encroached upon. The traffic through the town leading to the Seafront will lead to even further congestion, making access to Red Funnel, Floating Bridge, Local Shops, Waitrose and possibly a Marina difficult. It is unnecessary for Norris Castle / Springhill traffic to come this way for access to these estates. Both sites already have an entrance . Our appeal to you is, please, please, please attend as many public meetings as you can regarding this application and make your feelings heard. Write a letter to the Planning Department, and sign the petition at Valu-4-U, this will really help too, saying NO to this access road. PLEASE SUPPORT US in making sure all of your friends, family and colleagues are aware of this planning application.

Town Mayor Report for East Cowes from Peter Lloyd (Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor)
I will start this months report with the theft of a defibrillator from the external wall of the Shore Side café at the Esplanade; the reason that it was placed on the outside was to enable public access to the machine in an emergency. This mindless act could have prevented a lifesaving act from being carried out should someone had the misfortune of having a heart attack. I fail to understand why someone would have wanted to take it as it is only usable on someone who has stopped breathing, as the defibrillator will not operate on a living person. The second act of foolishness was the climbing of the flag pole outside the Town Hall and the removal of the union jack flag. This is not to be recommended for obvious reasons. The possible removal of the umbrella tree was halted when the clerk and I spent a morning sending emails to the IWC’s Head of Place officer, who put a stop to the trees removal. I was then able to send out a press release to inform the public. An English Heritage tree personnel has since inspected the tree and in a written report has said that the tree can be saved. He also said that there was no trace of Honey fungus or die back and the trunks condition is sound, the tree does not appear to be in an immediate danger to the public. The IWC has asked Island Roads to commission a further detailed examination of the tree by an independent specialist, which has found that it has a fungal infection of inonotus hispidus in the trunk around the graft point, so we have two conflicting positions. I am told that no work will take place on the tree until the Isle of Wight Council has made its final decision. (This was the position at the time of writing this report). 14
Floating Bridge: a community group compiled questions which have been approved and added to by a stakeholders group of which I was chair, consisting of 3 members of Cowes TC, 3 from East Cowes TC, members of the public group including engineers. A long list of questions have been sent to the IWC Scrutiny Committee and its members, covering every aspect from design, project management, why is it not meeting its operational requirements and the desired outcomes, to the more technical questions. I would like to thank all those members of the public who have taken an active part in dealing with the Floating Bridge and its many problems. At an invited visit to Norris Castle we were given a presentation by the developers who wish to turn the castle into a 17 – suit 5 star hotel and the existing farm buildings into housing, other housing allowed on the site but must be out of view are woodland lodges, as well as the building of 53 low density housing, equates to 1 per acre, again out of view from the esplanade and Cowes and from the sea, on the Spring Hill site. As the residents of New Barn Road have objected to the developers to any access via New Barn Road the proposed access route is via the Esplanade through to the Spring Hill site. The Town Council are very concerned about this. A public consultation is planned to be held by the developers at the Town Hall on the 1st March. I would like to thank the East Cowes scouts who are helping the Friends of East Cowes to keep Kingston Cemetery tidy and the Scouts also carried out a bird watch study at the end of January. It is nice to see younger people taking an active part in looking after their Town.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love The fight to save our towns Umbrella tree continues. The tree received an independent report basically saying it could be saved and was relatively healthy and only needed minor attention. Conservationist Chris Packham joined the campaign and now Alan Titchmarsh comments on the tree but then more bad news came from our council as Cllr. Ian Ward, who delivered a completely ambiguous response from IWC basically passing the buck rather than stating how the County Council will do all in its power to save the umbrella tree and support our towns people. The “IOW Council has No Objection to removing the umbrella tree”. However our towns people do, and we will fight to save our tree and we are watching over it very carefully.
short and longterm issues in your response. If you want parking Zones in your street I will support you as long as this is what all residents want.
The Red Funnel demolishment of The Trinity Buildings is well under way changing the landscape of our town forever. It’s still unclear what the future will be for residents in Dover Road. I’m informed that works to upgrade the pumping station at the Albany Green will be concluded in early March and I’m pleased that the works have been properly screened from public sight .
You might have also noticed that work has stopped on the New Kingston Marine Park. The intention of IWC is to proceed but cash flow and land transfers appear to be holding this up. The plan for this site depends on private investors and any construction will take months.
