At some stage in our lives someone we know will die. Grief can be overwhelming, and we may be surprised by our reaction to grief. There are no time limits on grief and how we react. If you want to support someone who has been bereaved there are simple things you can do. If you are worried about saying the wrong thing, then say that rather than not saying anything. You can offer to do shopping, take something to eat, suggest taking a gentle walk to get some fresh air or just sit with them. You can also put them in contact with Cruse Bereavement Support. Cruse is here to support anyone, no matter who has died or when they died. On the Island Cruse supports adults, children, and young people. Trained bereavement volunteers work one to one, mainly by phone and video conference. We provide a confidential and non-judgemental service, giving grieving people time to talk to someone outside their circle of family and friends. There are a number of ways you can get support; you can self-refer by calling 01983 523030 (24/7hrs) or by emailing isleofwight@cruse.org.uk in either case you will need to leave your name and telephone number. If you prefer you can complete a referral form online www.cruse.org. uk/get-support/contact-your-local-branch and whichever method you chose a trained bereavement assessor will contact you from a withheld number. If you want to find out more about Cruse Bereavement Support and how you could support the charity, please use the contact details above. This can be by training as a volunteer or helping with our fundraising activities.

pring is almost here, the evenings are getting lighter and the clocks spring forward on the 27th March. There are daffodils and crocuses appearing on hedges and in gardens, showing us that the weather is warming, and good times are just ahead, and the island is waking from its winter snooze. Although I mustn’t forget that we have had snow in March before!!!! It’s now just a waiting game. This month I have gotten together with the Isle of Wight Cats Protection to work on a feature for the Senior Kitizens. They have some real beauties in the centre at the moment, just waiting for their forever homes. They often get overlooked for the kittens and younger cats, but these mature felines have great personalities and many more years of love to give. See our feature on page 14 and let this be the month that you adopt and make a difference to one of these senior kitizens. There is a lot of talk about the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June and on page 10 you will find our handy guide to organising a street party to celebrate this occasion with neighbours, family, and friends. Although it’s not happening until June it’s time to start organising now. We have our regular news reports from Cllr Karl Love and Isle of Wight Society member Michael Paler to keep you informed of news, events, and information in East Cowes, Whippingham and across the Island. If you fancy doing some puzzles go to pages 12 and 13 for this month’s sudoku, wordsearch, anagrams and kriss kross. Hope I haven’t made them too easy this month! I hope you have a great March and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

Let’s march into March with some dates of upcoming events, facts and historical events. Saint David’s Day, or the Feast of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales, falls on March 1st, the date of Saint David’s death in 589 AD Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday falls on March 1st. Shrove Tuesday was the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the Lenten fast.

East Wight Photographic Group A friendly local group meeting twice a month for photographic outings, lunch, presentations, workshops & socialising. This year, Lent officially begins on March 2nd. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and will end on April 14th - three days before Easter Sunday. Mother’s Day, or Mothering Sunday falls on March 27th this year and is a day to honour mothers and other mother figures, such as grandmothers, stepmothers, and mothers-in-law. The “Ides of March” was a day in the Roman calendar equivalent to March 15th. It was considered a deadline for settling debts. It was also the day Julius Caesar was assassinated. If you were born in March, your birth flower is a daffodil! March babies are spoiled with two birthstones: aquamarine, and bloodstone which symbolize courage and there are two zodiac signs in March. Pisces, which is until March 20, and Aries which is from the 21st. Every year, March and June finish on the same day of the week. The name for March comes from Mars, the Roman god of war. It was named as such in both the Julian and Gregorian calendars. This year the Spring Equinox occurs on March 20th. This is when the sun is directly above the equator, making the day and night equal length. The Anglo-Saxons called March “Hlyd monath” meaning “Stormy month” or “Hraed monath” meaning “Rugged month.” The popular social media outlet Twitter was launched on March 21, 2006, with the first tweet going out the same day. It was posted by the founder, Jack Dorsey, which read “just setting up my twttr.” Saint Patrick’s Day occurs every March 17th, celebrated in many countries to commemorate the day Saint Patrick died. The Eiffel Tower was ascended for the first time on March 31st, 1889. Gustave Eiffel, led a group of government officials and members of the press to the top. The elevators were not in operation yet, so the journey was made on foot and took over an hour.

From the beginning there has been a fantastic Community working in many ways from making food deliveries, scrubs, face masks and activity packs for the shielded and lonely in the town. The volunteers from the hub also phoned people and have made many new friends. David and Laura from Coast to Castle Estate Agents and Kevin from Meadow Road Topshop East Cowes delivered shopping to shielded people. Lloyds and Regent chemists provided an excellent service to help delivery by the volunteers of medical items. All the volunteers that have been with the hub since day one have been fantastic to work with, with many moving onto the Riverside Vaccine Centre to help. They also volunteered with the Optio car scheme to get people to their vaccines. We worked closely with East Cowes Medical Centre and thank them for their support. Waitrose and the Co-op also supported the hub.

This year Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. There will be activities throughout the year to celebrate this anniversary with a four-day UK bank holiday from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June. On Sunday 5th June people are encouraged to share friendship, food, and fun with neighbours as part of the Platinum Jubilee Big Lunch celebration. Information on hosting such events can be found online at www. edenprojectcommunities.com/blog/the-bigjubilee-lunch Organising a street party just for residents and neighbours is simple and does not need a licence but think about planning one now. The number one tip for holding a party is to plan early. If you encounter any difficulties speak to your local councillor who will be happy to help. There are myths about running a street party: Myth 1: It’s too difficult You should not need a risk assessment – as long as consideration is given to the safety needs of all those attending, common sense precautions should be enough. Myth 2: You need a licence You do not require a music licence at a street party unless amplified music is one of the main purposes of the event. You may need a Temporary Events Notice if you plan to sell alcohol, but this is not required if participants are going to bring their own. A Temporary Events Notice currently costs £21 and covers up to five hundred people. Myth 3: The law requires complex forms for a road closure and councils need to sign off every detail. For most small parties in quiet streets where you need to close a road, all your council needs to know is where and when. They will need at least 6 weeks’ advance notice as they will need to put in place a temporary traffic regulation order. 10

Challenge jobsworth attitudes. Alternatively, you can keep the road open and organise a gathering on private land, such as a driveway or garden, without any requirement to fill in council forms. Myth 4: The law requires a fee to be charged for a road closure. The law allows councils to charge for the cost of arranging a traffic regulation order although they are not required to do this and are encouraged not to. If your council is making a charge, you have every right to question why. Myth 5: It’s too late to ask for a road closure. Some councils set deadlines to help them manage their work, but there are no deadlines in law, so if they seem unreasonable ask then to be flexible. Myth 6: You need to buy expensive road signs. Island Roads may be able to provide signs, but you can hire them. Myth 7: You need expensive insurance. There is no requirement from central government to have public liability insurance. The Big Lunch website have negotiated special rates for street party insurance starting at just £28. Myth 8: You need a food licence. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has confirmed that you don’t, however you must ensure that any food provided is safe to eat. Myth 9: You need a licence to run a raffle or lottery. You do not have to register a lottery if it is ‘incidental’ to the event, but tickets must be sold at the event. Anyone at the event (including children) can take part in this sort of lottery. No more than £100 can be deducted for expenses and no more than £500 on prizes (excludes donated prizes). (Thank you to Cllr Chris Quirk, Mayor of Shanklin for collating and sharing this information)

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love East Cowes is a very caring community as we have seen this during the pandemic in how people pulled together for the benefit of us all. While the situation is rapidly improving, we need to counter the economic costs and I am very concerned about the rising cost of energy and food prices. With this in mind the East Cowes Town Council have voted not to increase this year’s Town Precepts and we recognise the hardships some will suffer because of the inflationary pressures. It’s really not right in my book that anyone should have to rely on a Foodbank to feed themselves in this day and age. Your town council is one that cares, and I have seen them trying to help people in need. If you’re struggling and need advice or support, please contact me or your local councillor, whichever you feel most comfortable with, and we will try to help. I know what feeling isolated can do to people’s health and wellbeing and we all need to support one another wherever we can. Sometimes just a neighbourly chat can help and other times seeking professional help is needed. We are lucky in East Cowes to have the Community Spirited organisation based at the Pavilion. There are groups and organisations out there who can offer support but most of all just having a conversation with neighbours can make all the difference.

along the South Coast of England. It was a big decision for us at that time in moving to an Island where my friends and college tutor had advised against it, expressing concerns about being accepted, living on an Island with traditional values and outdated attitudes. I remember my college tutor being concerned and even stating he would leave a place open for me to return to college if it didn’t work out, but we have never looked backwards and are proud to call East Cowes home. Becoming a County Councillor has changed the dynamic of David’s and my life here on our Island. We have lots of fun, but we also have experienced some negatives in living a more public life. It is a choice we both chose in trying to serve the people who elected me to represent them. I remember a longstanding councillor’s wife saying to David after I was elected to Isle of Wight Council, in the sports Hall at Medina Leisure Centre, “you do realise you have lost him to the council now” and it’s so true. It has changed our social life resulting in us paying far too little attention to our friends these days as the pressure of holding a Cabinet post is high.

The long-awaited East Cowes Esplanade Community Regeneration Project works, A new book called ‘Out On An Island‘ was to address the first stage of the Landslip, launched at Carisbrooke Castle on the 19th are about to commence. It’s been a huge February. It’s important to me because I undertaking by Sharon Lake to get this far have made a contribution to its writing. It’s and we are all incredibly grateful for her about the Isle of Wight’s Hidden LGBTQ+ efforts especially as Sharon has joined the History: people, places and real-life stories. I East Cowes Town Council and is trying to have been looking forward to seeing the book move home at the same time. In short, the because it contains a section about my work works are due to commence at the beginning life and David and us moving to East Cowes of March and complete by the end April in in 1992 to take up a Youth Work post and readiness for a summer opening. This work then later becoming one of the very first Gay will be focused on the area leading from the and Bisexual Men’s Outreach workers closed gate - to the landslip. Thank you to 16

News Report from Cllr Karl Love continued Sharon and her team of helpers and supporters. I wanted to explain something about empty vacant properties and repossession of them and returning them to use but in simple terms. It is a very complex business repossessing vacant properties of any sort and we do have a dedicated service to do this within IWC. Firstly, a property has to be identified as vacant, we do not always know unless someone informs us. When we learn of vacant properties our teams try to work with the owners to bring them back to use. It can take years because of the complex rules and laws. If this fails, we can take legal steps to repossess a property. If the properties are unsightly and dangerous the council can issue a section s215 notice to them to tidy the land and building. If a property is on the market, up for rent or lease repossession its complicated. I have asked questions previously about the former doctor’s surgery in York Avenue, it’s very disappointing that this building which was left to the people of East Cowes was not returned to the people after it was decommissioned by the NHS. It was sold to a developer who has done nothing to it in all this time. I would want for it to come possibly back into the ownership of the town people but that looks unlikely. I have asked our listed properties officers to look into this matter for me. Recently a property in Adelaide road was repossessed and we hope it will be brought back into family use so there are some successes at repossessing properties. A small team of local volunteers have been working on trying to have our beach registered under a Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), rules to achieve bathing water quality standards. Please can we share this consultation questionnaire on bathing and water quality for our town. We need as many

people as possible to complete the QA. Lin Kemp and a small team including Michael Douse have spent a lot of time and effort on this submission and ECTC are currently paying for water sampling. They need your help in completing this consultation and I ask you to spend a few minutes to complete the form. It’s really important to help protect our environment for future generations and this is a step in the right direction . The East Cowes beach is becoming increasingly used not just as a sail training area but by the Shrape Swimmers and bathers. We want this area to be the very best it can be and by achieving the DEFRA status it is another step forwards for our Island Biosphere status https://consult.defra.gov.uk/water/ consultation-on-designation-of-east-cowesesplanad/ It’s No Smoking Day is the 9th March. Did you know that you’re up to 4 times more likely to quit smoking successfully if you receive expert support? There is a significant link between smoking, deprivation and poverty which undermines our attempts to improve health and well-being. I know how hard it is to quit smoking once you start but there is no doubt that quitting has many benefits not just to your health but to those around you and of course to your financial pocket. The stop smoking service provides a range of options to help you quit including support from an advisor, stop smoking medications, e-cigarettes and a digital offer for those who wish to quit by themselves. If you’re a smoker and want to quit, why not contact our teams at www.healthylifestylesiow.co.uk Telephone: 01983 642369 - 0800 9991396 or email healthylifestyles.isleofwight@nhs.net I’m sorry that I have not been able to report more information here at this time, but it’s been a very testing month for me. 17
