In this months issue you will also find a recipe on page 8 which has been tried and tested by myself and these biscuits were a big hit. They are very easy to make and can be enjoyed with a nice cup of tea whilst doing the puzzles on page 10. Whilst writing this the sun is shining, I’m not sure how long for though but lets hope its here to stay so we can start enjoying our beautiful Island and some of the great walks and outdoor activities it has to offer.

East Cowes Business Association The long awaited arch is finally up and is already proving quite a talking point, with a definite divide whether it is liked or loathed! It has been made using old chains from the chain ferry and the intention is to link the ‘old’ part of the town with the new, encouraging people from Waitrose over to the many smaller shops in York Avenue that are largely hidden. For the record, it was paid for with Section 106 money which was dedicated for the public realm (effectively, it was paid for by housing developers, not council tax). The money couldn’t have been used to pay for police, doctors, teachers or nurses, another hospital or a new school. If you have an idea of improving your community, pop along to the next town council meeting and let our town council know.

Homemade Ginger Biscuits I came across this recipe recently on social media. It was shared by a friend of a friend of a friend!!!! I do love a ginger biscuit and normally settle for a shop brought packet as I have never tried making them before. These are very easy to make and taste lovely the only problem with them is I have made them three times now and each time they have come out differently. The first batch had a nice sharp crispness to them with a beautiful snap that even Mary Berry would be proud of. The second batch were softer and more like a cookie but just as nice and the third batch was really gooey and chewy and I felt like it gave my mouth a good workout which again is no bad thing. I hope you enjoy making them and let me know how yours turn out as it will be interesting to see… Ingredients 113g soft brown/golden sugar 100g butter or margarine 2 tablespoons of golden syrup 2 teaspoons of ground ginger (I used about 3 as I do like a ginger taste) 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda 227g self raising flour Heat oven to 190°C. In a saucepan gently stir and warm the butter, syrup and sugar until butter is melted and well mixed. Remove from the heat. Sieve together flour, bicarb and ginger and stir into the melted butter, syrup and sugar mix. Form into a soft dough. Place small balls (about 1 teaspoon of mix) onto a greased baking tray. About 12 per tray and flatten slightly. They flatten and spread during baking. Bake for 15 minutes or until the colour is right for ginger biscuits and the top looks slightly rough. Remove from oven and cool slightly in the tray then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Town Mayor Report for East Cowes From Margaret Webster (Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor) Another month has passed by, we have seen The issue of street cleaning the start of spring with itslonger evenings especially around the cut and sunshine. between York Avenue and Well Road where there has been an excess of cigarette butts This last month has seen some changes in left on the pavement will eventually be dealt the Town, sadly we have lost one business with by The Environment Officer but this area here in the town but I am reliably informed should be cleaned daily by Island Roads. that it will be replaced shortly with another business. We welcome them and wish them The environment officer will be commencing success. working in East Cowes several hours per week By the time you read the May edition of this magazine you will no doubt have seen the new feature here in Well Road, the chain Arch. Once the town Council accept the paperwork it will become the East Cowes Town Council property of which they will take responsibility of it. Insurance for the Arch is already in place. The Town Clerk has been advised that it was thought that a sum of money possibly ÂŁ3000 has been put aside for its maintenance for the Town Council- this is still to be confirmed. The floral displays for flower pots at the bases of the Arch we understand are to be provide by Osborne House and obviously maintained by them as well. Various concerns were raised by councillors at the last Town Councilmeeting regard to OLD ROAD and the safety of the school children and parents Holy Cross children when walking to school. It was resolved that the Town Clerk would request that this road is assessed as a priority to secure capital funding to carry out the most urgent highways improvements before the road is resurfaced as scheduled for 2016/17. The Town council fully support the need for a safe route to school along Old Road. 12

very shortly and will be helping to keep our Town bothpresentable and welcoming.

The detail and arrangements for the New Muga and Play area at Victoria Grove Recreation Ground will be discussed shortly in readiness of an agreement with The Town Council and Isle of Wight Council as to responsibility of the area soon. It would be nice to have it all in place for the summer school holidays. Parkside Pavillion in Vectis Road has already opened its doors to a youth club, many other activities are planned for all ages, we wish the project and its staff a great success. The Toilets on the East Cowes Esplanade are being re decorated at the moment, and replacements are being made to some equipment. Therefore the entire Esplanade area is made available for the Councils consideration. Town Council have declined to sign any revised leases/licences relating to the Toilets on the Esplanade for the time being until they have been given full and complete details of the proposed transfer of all discretionary services.

Town Mayor Report for East Cowes From Margaret Webster The Town Council are looking to work with the two Primary Schools in East Cowes to put together something memorable for the children in recognition and celebration of our Queens 90th Birthday. By now you will all be aware that the Red Funnel ‘Regeneration’ application was declined at the April Planning meeting in County Hall. There are varying opinions on this issue. The Town Council decided several months ago to employ a professional Consultant to advise and represent us at the Planning meeting. Mr Glen Hepburn came to several meetings at the Town hall including public meetings. He listened to us all, taking on board several comments and suggestions. He knows the area well as he has worked for the County Council previously. He wrote several letters to the Planning Officer of the application putting forward the Town Councils points of view. East Cowes Town Council did not object to this application in principle but there were a number of elements that East Cowes Town Council members wish to be discussed and then decided on - ten points in all. It was explained by Mr Hepburn that this was the last chance that we could get it right for East Cowes and elements needed to be understood. We now wait and see what is to happen next. A case of watch this space, I suspect!

On May 1st 2016 at 2pm on Cowes Bandstand, Cowes Parade, there will a Commemoration of the defence of COWES/ EAST COWES in May 1942 by the Cowes built Polish destroyer –ORP BLYSKAWICA and the loss of her sister ship ORP GROM in the Narvick campaign.
