Dear Readers Welcome to the May issue of Island Magazines. Whilst writing this the sun is shining and the days are starting to warm up. The Island has sprung back into life and the tourists are on their way and seasonal businesses are now open. There are plenty of places to visit and things to do across the Island whether it’s a beach picnic, a country walk or visiting one of the many towns to mooch around and see some of the unique local shops. On pages 6 & 7 you will find ‘Dates for your Diary’ which includes details of events happening throughout May. This month’s issue is packed full of news and information and it’s also an ideal way to find local services offered by local businesses. Please take the opportunity to support them and let them know you saw them advertised here. We have been working with the IOW Cats Protection and some of their mature residents and you can find more information about this on page 13. I hope you all have a great May and enjoy the Bank Holidays. Until next month....

Gardening and Websites It might be an odd combination but a mix of a desk job and outdoors work is just what the doctor ordered for Isle of Wight website developer Tim Leal. Having developed websites now for over ten years, a back problem meant a trip to the doctor and a more active lifestyle was prescribed and an interest in gardening turned into a healthy side-line. If you need a new website or want to refresh your current website, then tldesignworks (see main advert) can deliver something modern and fresh. Website hosting and site backup are all part of the service. From online brochures to e-commerce, contact Tim to find out more. Tim is responsible for several popular Isle of Wight websites including www.isleofwight.pub and www.welcometotheisland.co.uk as well as popular Isle of Wight musicians Lucid at www.lucidband.co.uk. A major project for 2017 is online invoicing services. Tim developed Bright Invoicing to cater for the self-employed or sole trader who doesn’t want to tackle many of the complicated accounting or book-keeping alternatives. It’s currently free to use and ideal for those who want to keep track of income and expenses. See more at www.brightinvoicing.com If you need your lawn mowing or hedge trimming Tim is happy to do that too! With his own tools, Tim can leap in his car and covers most of East Wight. So contact him today and get your garden weeded and lawn looking tip top for the summer…!

I hope last months recipe was a success for you and this time the Four Seasons Cookery Academy is treating us to a sweet treat (just in case you didn’t have enough chocolate over Easter). This recipe is for a Jaffa Cake and it sounds delicious. There are a couple of top tips at the bottom of the recipe to reduce calories and sugar intake which in turn means you can always have that extra slice without feeling guilty.

Jaffa Cake© 2 Eggs (medium) 3 oz (75g) Castor Sugar 3 oz (75g) Self-Raising Flour Orange Curd or Orange Marmalade Milk Chocolate (approx half a bar of 46%) Dark Chocolate (approx quarter bar min 70%)

www.cookeryacademy.co.uk

Heat Oven to 220°C (Gas mark 7) and line a Swiss Roll tin with baking parchment. Break eggs into a bowl and whisk lightly. Add the sugar and whisk well until the mixture is thick, creamy and almost white in colour. Lightly fold in the flour. Place into the prepared tin and bake for approximately 8 minutes. Be careful not to over bake. Top with Orange Curd or Marmalade (depending on taste) Place the Chocolate in a microwave-proof bowl and melt carefully – 10 seconds at a time. Drizzle it over the cake and cut into squares when cool. This is a fatless cake which is good – do try to use a decent flour to get a good result with this. The flavour of this cake is absolutely delicious – and not bad for us, either which is a bonus. Don’t put too much Claireabellas Marmalade/Curd on and reduce calories Home Bargains and sugar by drizzling the Chocolate, you Find us on will still get the same chocolate ‘hit’ but with far fewer calories/fat. Why spend more on your home... Gorgeous home and lifestyle products, great gadgets, gifts, clothes & kitchenware. This month’s front cover was taken by Amanda Ellis who has captured the amazing blossom on her plum tree growing in her garden.

Amanda moved to the Island over 25 years ago from London and immediately fell in love with Island life. Amanda suffers from a heart problem which has affected her health but her love of photography has kept her spirits up and when she is having a good day she travels around the Island by bus taking photos and on the other days she is happy to sit and enjoy her garden taking photos of the ever changing plants and trees and the visiting wildlife.

Adoption time Yes kittens are extremely cute and playful but then again so are these beautiful mature cats who desperately want to adopt some humans so they can have forever homes. They are saddened that they have been overlooked for the newer, younger models but these cats still know how to have a fun time and are well behaved and toilet trained... what more could you possibly want!!! They have so much to offer and still have lots of life in them and plenty of love to give that special person or family. Don’t delay, adopt today. Island Magazines are pleased to introduce these adorable adult cats who want to be given a chance. There are more on the website at www.isleofwight.cats.org.uk or pop in and meet them in person at 122, Marlborough Road, Ryde, PO33 1AW. They are open 11am - 4pm daily but closed on Tuesdays. This little poser is Mittens and she is 3 years old. She doesn’t want to share with other cats or dogs or young children as she wants to be the centre of attention. She is black and white and is always happy to let you play with her.

This handsome chappie is Thomas and he is simply adorable and these photos do not do him justice. He is happy to live with dogs, cats and children and has a lovely laid back attitude to life.

This white and tortoiseshell pussy is Twizzy. In real life she isn’t as stern as her photo portrays her. She doesn’t want to live with other cats and her mind isn’t made up yet as to whether or not she likes dogs. Ideally she would be suited to an older family. She is happy and loving and desperately wants her forever home.

My lords, ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce you to Princess... This beautiful tabby is 9 years old but certainly isn’t over the hill just yet. Princess wants her owners all to herself and isn’t happy to share with children, cats or dogs and would ideally be more suited to a more mature person/family.

This is Misty who is grey and white and is 15 years old. Don’t be put off by her age as she is a beautiful and friendly cat and still likes to go outdoors. She doesn’t want to live with other cats or dogs and would suit a more mature family.

Whisper is tortoiseshell and white. She is ever so pretty and has a lovely personality. She is looking for some mature humans to offer her a loving home, but she doesn’t want to live with other cats or dogs as she wants you all to herself. 13

Town Mayor Report for East Cowes From Margaret Webster

(Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor)

As I write the Town Councils report for the May issue, I realise how quickly we have reached the fifth month of the year. This month has been busy for the Town Council as we have had to tie up loose ends and endeavour to complete projects that we have been working on during this Council. As you will all be aware by now the IOW Council and Town Council elections take place in May when we will have a new Town Council with some new faces I am sure, and hopefully not too many more financial responsibilities passed down to Town and parish Councils. At the March Town council meeting the Environment Officer reported that she is continuing to target owners of dogs who do not take home or remove their dogs mess. This is an offence and there is legislation in place to fine these residents. It causes stress to residents and gives the wrong impression of our town, especially as the majority have great pride in living here. Dog signs are continuing to be put around the Town displaying the consequences for dog fouling. It is stressed that anyone can report it to Island roads if they witness it happening. Island Roads will take action!! The Muga on Victoria Recreation Ground has now received its planning permission, and it should be installed in time for the School Summer Holidays. The Town Council are pleased to have been able to support this project, it has been a long time happening but it will be in place soon. We thank both Lee Matthews and Paul Sands for their hard work in accessing the funding and progressing this project to completion. We as a council are still pursuing a bus service needed to cover the outer perimeters of 16

East Cowes, but are still awaiting a reply from Richard Tyldsley, General Manager of Southern Vectis. We will continue to pursue until we receive an acceptable answer. Floating Bridge ticketing system has still not been confirmed, and as yet we still have not heard any solutions that they promised to arrange for East Cowes residents to purchase and assist with the registering of the cards that allow one way journeys. We wait in anticipation. East Cowes Town Council were successful in the application for two Defibrillators and training kits - we are now awaiting delivery and then training will take place. The date for Red Funnels appeal has now been announced for July but as yet we are not sure where, possibly County Hall. I have agreed to attend on behalf of Town Council and I believe Glen Hepburn (our planning expert will also attend with me). Lastly please pick up a programme around the Town, and do support the various activities during the 75th Blyskawica Celebrations, activities on Kings Square, exhibitions in East Cowes Town Hall and a dance in the Town Hall. More activities in West Cowes. ALL TAKING PLACE DURING FROM 5TH MAY -8TH MAY. The next Town Council meeting will be on the Thursday 18th May 2017 at the Town Hall at 6.30pm. East Cowes Town Council Meetings will now be starting at 6.30pm on the 3rd Thursday of the month. Planning Meeting will be arranged as required.
