Town Mayor Report for East Cowes From Peter Lloyd

(Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor) Cecamm: I had the pleasure of attending the official opening by HRH Countess of Wessex. Cecamm standing for the Centre of Excellence for Composites, Advanced Manufacturing and Marine, and administered by the IW College who run a range of courses in partnership with Island firms such as GKN Aerospace, MHI Vestas Ltd and Gurit (UK) Ltd.. It is a purpose built centre teaching practical skill courses for the Marine, Electronic, and Air industries. They also run evening courses, so if you wish to learn welding or engineering then please contact them. I had a very enjoyable afternoon including a tour of the building and met some very interesting people including a person from Formula 1 racing. Isle of Wight Day: the East Cowes celebrations started on the Friday with a picnic held at the Holy Cross School Playing Field. Schools from the local area were represented, (Holy Cross, Queensgate, the Studio school and Priory School). The weather was good to us and following the picnic everyone joined in with the singing of sea shanties. It was great to see the pupils joining in with the singing but also doing the actions that accompanied some of the shanties such as A sailor went to sea, sea, sea, the Pirate song and trying very hard to keep up with the ever increasing speed of the Sailor’s Hornpipe. I really did enjoy myself. The Saturday events took the form of live entertainment taking place in the town centre, including music and songs, satirical poetry, close up magic, a couple of competitions: spot the Isle of Wight in the shop windows and stick the Floating bridge on its chains, (like pinning the tail on the donkey). The face painting and balloon modelling again proved to be very popular. The event was arranged at short notice by the Town Council and the ECBA and I 4

would like to give special thanks to the Town Clerk who arranged the entertainment so well. Isle of Wight Studio School Students Awards: the assistant Principal- IW College, the Deputy Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight and myself presented awards to mark the student’s achievements and celebrate their success in: Attendance, Diversity, Placement, Charity, Community, Performance and outstanding student awards in English, Mathematics and Science. I would like to congratulate all of the students and wish them well. Other news in Brief Red Funnel: have won their appeal to develop their terminal / marshalling area. They are also to refurbish the Red Eagle ferry, in a similar way as to the other two ferries that have already been altered. I have heard that RF is to introduce a freight only service, in addition to the existing passenger ferries. More on this as details emerge. RF are funding the water bus service on a trial basis for the weekend and evening crossings. East Cowes Heritage Centre: are celebrating their 25th anniversary with an exhibition on the history and looking at the changes within the town over the last 25 years at their Clarence Road centre. My congratulations to Angel Radio who have won the Entrepreneur Age Friendly of the Year Award 2017. The Radio station is run entirely by volunteers who have to fund from donations and even from their own pockets the various licences and performing rights fees etc. If you can help in any way please contact Bev on 01983 246810 the station plays music up to the 1960s and is mainly for the more mature lisener.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love to change? Renovations like these encourage passing visitors to stop and walk around our town supporting our local economy. We do have several shops empty in our town but I am aware they are being sought after and hopefully will soon be full again. As we see in the press East Cowes is attracting a great deal of publicity both positive and negative. The Crossways development has not gone away and the Norris Castle Development has risen its head again and in West Cowes, the Medina Yard development also pops up again. We need to be vigilant in our determination to influence positively the developers and to create the kind of town we want to see Work continues on the floating bridge and live in. We cannot simply keep building repairs. There is no intention to bring back more homes without good quality jobs. the old floating bridge and there has been much speculation about this. I still don’t have I am also concerned about the growing any timescales for the bridges reintroduction employment threats to our highly skilled and cutting edge industries. World politics however I have been asked to join the affect East Cowes directly and both our enquiry team whose job requirement is to government and council must act assertively review the entire project. We will discover and voice concerns. We must demand where things have gone wrong. that our government ministers challenge and protects industries on our island. There’s been a great deal to learn about council procedure and the law. I like to see things happen quickly and our town is changing and quickly too. I understand that Red Funnel will soon start to demolish the Trinity Yard buildings ready for commencement of the terminal development. I hope they will provide a timetable of the development construction. Red Funnel now have planning consent and I anticipate they will keep adding new dimensions to their business as they battle to increase their profits for the new owners!

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love continued it can take me a while to get through them all and I very much appreciate hearing your concerns and comments. We can only make a difference by working together and in the coming months there will be some very difficult financial announcements made by IWC, so we are told. The islands ruling administration is continuing with austerity, as driven by central government cuts to our council grants. £7.5 million this year is to be cut and the same again next year! This is just not realistic to do without causing real damage to our population. I’m starting to run constituency surgeries on the First Thursday of every month from 10.30 to 12.30 at the Seabreeze Cafe. Time slots will be limited but it will give you the chance to ask questions of me. I will of courses still be out and about in the town at other times to chat with you. The towns Christmas event organised in partnership with the Town Council and Business Association takes place on December 2nd in the streets and at the Town Hall. Planning is underway for this and lots of people are working hard in the background to make this happen. The theme this year is vintage so if you have any ideas or contributions please let me know and I will pass them on. I wonder if we have any classic or vintage car owners who might be willing bring their cars into the town for the day? Keep an eye out for more information and let me know your thoughts! Finally Please take care with your fireworks in the run up to 5th November and remember not everyone likes them including your pets. Take care, be safe and have fun.

East Cowes Business Association News by Simon Craddock Does the thought of Christmas shopping fill you with cheer or fear? Do you prefer to see what you’re buying, or click and wait for the postman? Christmas can be expensive, and with three young children myself (and several nephews and godchildren, all of varying ages) knowing what to give them as a gift is a real headache. Walking around Newport or Ryde fills me with dread and as I spend the majority of my working life sat in front of a computer, I don’t really relish the thought of spending hours online in the evening either. Luckily for me (and you!) Kathy’s and Valu-4-U, both in lower York Avenue, and Housecrafts on Clarence Road, have a huge range of gifts for just about everyone and to suit most budgets. Kathy’s is an official Emma Ball stockist and has a large choice of products, including a surprisingly large range of jewellery, picture frames and some really quirky novelty items. Carrying lines for both Mums and Dads, sons, daughters and friends, there is bound to be something that is suitable. Valu-4-U is a complete treasure trove, and packed on the shelves is everything from fidget spinners, whoopee cushions, soft toys, colouring books and alien eggs (which for reasons still unknown to me, are always a hit in my house) and with so many other stocking fillers available, I can safely stock up without breaking the bank. Valu-4-U also carries a large range of clothes, including a huge range of ladies ‘one size’ Italian tops, meaning that you don’t have to worry about offending your Mum, Gran or girlfriend, furthermore, there are designs to 12

suit both the young and not so young! Housecrafts offer an alternative to socks for Dads and boyfriends (and who knows, perhaps the present will also serve as a hint to finally get that photo hung, or kitchen repainted!) With a selection of hand tools, paints, packets of seeds and fertilisers, there is no reason to panic buy this year. With loads of reasons to visit the local high street here in East Cowes, there are plenty of excuses not to risk trolley terror or pavement panic in Newport this year. The late Sandy, from Geraldine’s, gave an interview on her retirement stating that “local shops shouldn’t be the last hope, but the first choice” and having seen one of our members recently close due to a lack of trade, the future of your high street lies with you. Without your support and your custom, our high street shops, our local tradesmen and women and local professionals will have no choice but to close down. If you value your shops and businesses, you must make sure that you spend money with them. Finally, just a quick mention before I run out of room, ECBA and the Town Council are working together on bringing a Christmas event this year. As there are already two big events happening in East Cowes on Saturday 2nd December (Osborne House’s Christmas weekend as well as a charity table top sale in the town hall) it makes sense to offer something that complements this. At the moment, the details are still being worked out, but they include a choir, a raffle with a continued over the page

The autumn is an exciting time for us at the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital. This is when we sit down and look at all the applications that come in from the Hospital staff who want to purchase equipment and resources to make patients’ treatment and hospital stays just that bit better. This activity is the core of what the Charity is all about. We are often asked why the NHS cannot provide these things. The answer is that the NHS must statutorily provide a level of resources to meet needs. What we are asked for is equipment that goes that bit further to improve treatment and outcomes. Think of it like buying a car. Four wheels will get you from A to B, but a better model will increase comfort and your travelling experience. We cannot provide everything that is asked for and it is sad to have to refuse funds for some very worthwhile items. But we take great care to discuss all the applications with senior hospital staff and they help us maintain a sensible perspective on what priorities we set for our deliberations. Once our decisions are made, the applicants are informed and the purchase process begins. It can take some time to get everything in and we keep a keen eye on when items are delivered so that we can go and see them in use. Examples of what we will be providing this year are special brightly coloured and safe crockery and cutlery for dementia patients and a sub epidermal moisture scanner which will assist in the reduction of the occurrence of pressure sores.

We also endeavour to provide certain items for staff - for example, last year we provided comfortable furniture for the rest rooms for the pathology lab.

This year we have provided grants to two doctor’s surgeries for equipment that will mean less hospital visits. This is convenient for patients and also relieves some pressure on St Mary’s itself. We allocated approximately £79,000 worth of grants for 2017. All this is possible because of two main things. One is the incredible generosity of Islanders who donate from putting spare coins in boxes right up to remembering us in their will. The other is the fantastic team of over 60 volunteers who run our cafes in the hospital foyer, at the Laidlaw Centre and in Ryde Health and Well Being Clinic. We also have a well stocked shop in the Hospital foyer. You can help us by using these facilities as much as you can. The coffee is great and less than half the price of high street brands. All the profit after running costs goes to the Friends’ Fund so that extra cup of coffee may well help to fund something you or a loved one will feel the benefit of when receiving hospital treatment.
