Welcome and thank you for picking up a copy of the October issue. Whilst writing this, its a tad blustery outside and I am seeing my hopes of an Indian Summer slipping away. I think I need to accept that the weather is likely to stay more suited to Autumn. I’m certainly not complaining as I think our Island is beautiful whatever the season. On pages 18 and 19 you will find the ‘Dates for your Diary’ and there is still lots happening on the Island and if you have an event taking place in the next couple of months please get in contact so we can share the details. You can read the story behind this months stunning front cover on page 6. I hope you enjoy this issue and please keep using the services of our advertisers as there are some great local businesses out there. I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk Facebook: Cllr Karl Love Well it’s certainly been another busy month and I will try to tell you as much as I can of what I have been doing but due to limited to space I might not fit it all in. Sadly, the vandalism continued at the esplanade. I am working with the Town Council and we are still pursuing and will take actions to safeguard this loved and valued community facility including, taking legal action to protect it. The esplanade green also seems to have become a car park but not for long! Work will shortly start to encase it with additional seating and bollards preventing our green becoming a car park. It will of course be open for parking on special occasions and there is amplified parking down on the Esplanade without parking on the greens.
action is from Red Funnel and hope they will keep us informed.
There is no doubt that East Cowes and Whippingham will play a major part in the regeneration of our Island. I am told that businesses are lining up to buy a piece of our town, and so it is important for us all to participate verbally and engage with any planning applications to ensure that we live in an environment that we want, rather than an environment that somebody else wants for us. Please also make sure our East Cowes voice is heard by completing this online questionnaire about, ‘The Wight We Want’. It’s an important questionnaire because it is likely to be used by our County Council to justify some of their actions in the future. https://iwightinvest.com/the-wight-we-want/
You won’t be surprised to learn about the proposed fixed link feasibility study! I want to stress here that any feasibility study would not be funded by the Isle of Wight Council. This was made perfectly clear at the briefing I attended in September. It was a meeting to inform council members about issues surrounding a fixed link and feasibility study. Presentations were received, both in favour and against a feasibility study taking place. This again is an important debate for Whippingham and East Cowes because it was suggested, that the fixed link connection would emerge at Whippingham! I am happy to receive all of your comments about this issue which is likely to be many years away, if it should ever take place at all.
The Red Funnel planning application was approved but don’t hold your breath for immediate changes to our towns roads and infrastructure! This might take months or years. We now wait to hear what the plan of 4
I met with Bob Seely our MP and raised a number of issues including the Floating Bridge, Kingston Marine Park development and the Housing Development at Crossways. We had a positive meeting and both agreed about the need to control and properly manage housing developments. This was also an item discussed at IWC Scrutiny Regeneration, Planning and Environment Meeting. The point I raised was ‘we need high quality jobs’ not more housing for East Cowes. Yes we will always need good quality and affordable housing but it’s about a proportionate need, listening and responding to local peoples concerns and having the roads and services to cope.
The Floating bridge issues are ongoing and I have been very cross and frustrated with the County Councils actions which were taken without any consultation or discussion with me or any other local County Councillor in this
News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love continued area. The floating bridge was removed from service without any warning or proper consideration of its impacts. I have expressed anger about the replacement launch, it’s costs and the timetable operated. We are of course thankful for the Dave at the Folly Water Bus for stepping in, to bridge the gap. However, a dangerous precedent has been set about both pricing and privatisation. Increased fairs and privatisation should be resisted by our community. Of course by the time you read this we might of moved on in the debate! What is important is that you keep communicating and sending your comments to me and David.Stewart@iow.gov.uk. I will also keep you informed via my Facebook page. In last months edition I reported about my town walk with Island Roads and other managers from Isle of Wight Council. The issues I raised have been placed on the register for discussion and action and so we must wait to see if anything is going to change! I can assure you if it doesn’t, I will continue to pursue these matters. I am meeting with one of our council officers to discuss the important 106 funding. This funding comes from any new development constructed on the Island as part of a settlement for the constructing of local services. I intend to ensure East Cowes gets its fair share of this funding because our town needs improved service development and after all, our locality is making a very big contribution to our Islands redevelopment. One final note! Watch out for this up and coming Local band ‘Avocado Sunrise’ a great young island band to look out with Finn Sandy, from East Cowes playing drums. Our town and Island has such great talent and I wish them well in what I think is a great future.

Hare Today Gone Tomorrow... Except this isn’t the case with Nick Edwards and his hares which he continues to frequently photograph following a distribution survey conducted by the Isle of Wight Natural History and Archaeological Society. Nick took up the challenge of locating a stable colony of hares to study and photograph at dawn and dusk on a friendly farm in Cowes.

East Cowes Business Association News by Simon Craddock What a strange month September was, it seems that it isn’t only the weather that is unsettled! By now you will no doubt have heard that Red Funnel’s first proposal has been given planning permission by the Planning Inspector. This will be another major milestone in the development of East Cowes and I will leave you to decide whether this is good or bad, but either way, it will certainly re-shape the town. As a group representing many different businesses in and around the town (including Red Funnel themselves) we will continue to work together to ensure the most positive outcome for the town. We are concerned about the further threats to the potential loss of employment, but we are also remaining optimistic about the overall benefits. The total removal of the Floating Bridge by the IWC has been yet another hugely frustrating development for the town, it must be remembered that the Floating Bridge was running at a substantial profit prior to this fiasco (nearly a year ago) and whilst we accept that the old bridge needed replacing, we do not accept that this replacement process has been anything other than shambolic. How or why it was felt that the complete removal of service (and the replacement with a partial service) was considered the most appropriate action to take, is a mystery to us, but hopefully by the time you read this, we will have either the floating bridge reinstated or a suitable alternative service in place operating nonstop from morning until evening (at present, the timetable takes so long to figure out when it is or isn’t running, it is easier to drive around, a habit which will be difficult to break). This lack of continuous service combined with the different boats and even fares, causes much confusion, and goes against what the IW Council have previously stated about it being
a vital and sustainable link between East Cowes and Cowes. I am certain that both our mayor and county councillor have covered this, so I am going to save some words (and frustration) and move on… As the evenings draw in, you will no doubt be thinking about turning the heating on (if you have managed so far without it) but when was the last time that you had your boiler checked? Gastek Heating & Plumbing (01983 284245) are based in Clarence Road and can ensure that you’re ready to face the cold this winter, give them a call and say that you read about them here. If you’re lucky enough to have an open fire, or perhaps a stove, it is all the more important to ensure that you have fully functioning smoke alarms (actually, regardless of whether you have a fire or not, just get smoke alarms fitted). Both smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are available from Housecrafts, Clarence Road. We are really pleased to welcome Jeni Law of Island Celebrants to the ECBA (www. islandcelebrants.co.uk) If you are planning a celebration, but want something a little more personal to you or your loved one, have a chat with Jeni and discuss how she can help make your celebration absolutely and perfectly personal. Gutter Clearing
Call 01983 216121 or 07590 277298
As we head into Autumn, the leaves will be falling from the trees and could potentially be falling into, and blocking your gutters which in turn could make your house insurance null and void as most insurers now state that gutter clearing falls under general maintenance and should be looked at regularly. When your guttering is blocked, rain water will over flow and will eventually cause damage to the structural elements of the building, water will erode the building material and can ultimately cause damage to the foundations, drainage system and the paving. Internally, damp will appear and create mold and mildew.

Town Mayor Report for East Cowes From Peter Lloyd
(Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor) Floating Bridge: I know that you are all aware that the IWC have suspended the floating bridge until issues surrounding it have been resolved, which we hope will not take long. However please be aware that the water taxi service filling the timetable gaps whilst the launch service is not in operation cost £1.50 each way where the launch is £1.50 for a return trip. Tickets are not transferrable between the different service providers. Vandalism: The Town has again suffered more damage at the Esplanade where a fire was lit causing damage. The fire service attended and the police notified. Unfortunately, the CCTV camera had been removed a couple of days earlier by Island Roads and relocated elsewhere on the Island. The Town Council employees cleared up removing drug taking related equipment as well as broken glass from the site. On a positive note I would like to thank the Parkside Pavilion Youth Café members, WC, TK and EH for producing anti vandal posters reproduced here, which are at various locations around the town. Red Funnel’s original terminal plan involving the demolition of Dover Road properties has been given the go-ahead by a planning inspector. Red Funnel has also awarded a contract to build a new Red Jet 7 to Wight shipyard, based at the Columbine Building. Keziah Fun Day held at the Victoria Rec. to raise funds towards a memorial garden and play area at Hawthorne Meadows. It was a hot, sunny day and the event was enjoyed by all who attended, with plenty of stalls, side shows and entertainment, including performers from the circus. The event raised over £1,000. It was great to see the town’s residents supporting and enjoying the fun day and I thank Nikki and her team for inviting me and organising a great event. More good news: Island Roads under their community projects team have removed graffiti from the Skate Park and tidied up Cadets Walk community garden and are also going to replace the seat there. Finally the Town Council have received many comments with regard to the wonderful flower displays around the town centre. All of your messages have been passed on to Care in the Garden who provide water and look after them.
This modern 2 bed semi detached property is in the desirable area of Royal Architects, East Cowes. Being just a short walk to East Cowes Esplanade along with the towns array of shops including a Waitrose store and doctors surgery, it is an ideal location. Down stairs you have a good sized kitchen, downstairs w/c and a very good size Lounge/Diner with French doors leading out to the south facing sun trap of a rear garden which is laid to patio and astro turf for easy maintenance. Upstairs you have two double bedrooms and a family bathroom, both bedrooms have built in wardrobes for extra storage.
To view this well presented modern property please call The Wright Estate Agency on 01983 28 10 10.
